Annis may have been a sister of Joseph (4) born ±1616, Matthew born ±1620, and Samuel, but a little younger than Benjamin Bosworth born ±1615, all had to do with Dover. Matthew named a daughter Isabel. Samuel was an early friend and (church?)
brother of Capt. Benjamin Bosworth, from the region of Dedham, whence Francis Austin came to Hampton. The relations of these men to each other, to the Austins of Charlestown and to Annis (Austin) Littlefield, have not been examined.

General Notes: Husband - George Crisp
From 'The Doane Family' by Alfred A. Doane, 1902: 'George Crisp was a resident of Eastham, that part called Pochey, now East Orleans, and was a constable there in 1650; a grand juror in 1672 and 1678. ... His will, dated 8 June 1682, names wife Hepzibah executrix, and directs that 'my Brother Israel Cole, and my friend and neighbor Goodman Daniell Done, be healpful to my wife as overseers'.' From 'Library of Cape Cod' #32 (FHL 1004003): 'George Crisp was in Eastham in 1650, acting in the capacity of a constable, but the precise year of his settlement is not known. Though a townsman, he was not of the class called Town-purchasers, and had no legal right to the common land. What his vocation was is now unknown. His townsmen, who had the disposal of the common land, were very liberal in their allowance to him. He was, it is supposed, a resident in that part of Eastham called by the Indians 'Poche', and now denominated East Orleans. In 1658, in that vicinity, near his house, he had a swamp and upland allowed him, near John Young's. Under date of 27 Apr 1659, he was allowed 17 acres of land near William Twinning, Jr.'s, in Poche, and also three acres of meadow on the south side of Boat Meadow, or as the Indians called it, Onoscotist. He was the fortunate possessor of a horse, and he is set down as having one as early as 30 May 1660. In 1662, he appears to have brought upon himself some trouble, by receiving for sale liquor illegally, which he claimed was received without knowledge of doing an unlawful act. He was favorably considered by the court. The report of some little disorder at his house in consequence of the sale, was investigated. Mr. Crisp was a grand juror in 1672 and 1678. He was twice married. His first wife, Mary, by whom he had no children, died 20 Feb 1676. ... He attempted to adopt a son of Richard Berry of Yarmouth in 1660, a lad some six years of age called Samuel. He became 'stubborn and rebelioous and went away against' Mr. Crisp's protest 'before his lawful time.' In consequence Mr. Crisp ordered the executor to pay him the small sum of 'twelve pence and no more'. ... The name of Crisp is extinct in Eastham, also in Barnstable County.'
Research Notes: Husband - George Crisp
!Initial source: A family group sheet in the FGRA collection of the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, submitted by Grace H. R. Johnson, 1216 Buchon St., San Luis Obispo, Calif. Her source: NEHGR V. 6 pg 44. This sheet had his birth 'abt 1647, of Eastham, Barnstable, Mass.', no parents, death 28 Jul 1682, no place, and had his marriage to Hepzibah Cole. Mrs. Dorothy D. Hall, former family genealogist (now deceased), found death of his first wife Mary, no children born to them, record of his second marriage and of his death in Vital Rec of Eastham, Barnstable, Mass, 'Mayflower Desc.' V. 3 pg 180. She found his christening in the parish register of St. Peter's, Sandwich, Kent, England, and carried the line back three more generations. She submitted these and had LDS proxy temple ordinances done for them. LDS proxy temple ordinances for George were on the FGRA sheet and are in the 1997 IGI from temple records. However, an earlier proxy baptism was found there, also from a temple record.
Research Notes: Wife - Mary
!See notes of husband. Her death is in Vital Records of Eastham. No other records concerning her have been found. Her LDS proxy temple ordinance dates were sent in to the Ancestral File May 1994 but sealing to husband not sent. LDS proxy temple ordinances are in the 1997 IGI from temple records.

General Notes: Husband - John Scriven
The birth of John Scriven is recorded on page 51 of Part 1 of the
Parish Register for Wem, Shropshire County, England [op. cit]. The original entry reads : "1623, Oct. 27. John, s. of Thomas [Skeinen?], sawyer bap." The question about Thomas' last name is answered on page xvi. of Part 2 (one of the pages where corrections are noted), where it is stated: "Page 51, Line 18. For 'Skeinen,' read 'Skriven.'"
In that Wem Register, the mothers' names are not listed, so we are not given the name of John's mother. However, we feel certain that it was Margaret Corbett.
Now, among the important but unanswered questions about John are these: As the eldest son of Thomas and Margaret, wasn't John the rightful heir to the Lordship of Frodesley? But, he didn't follow his father in that position. His younger brother Richard did. Why was that so, and was that the reason for John's departure for the New World?
It is very likely that John left England for the New World BEFORE the knighting (on 29 September 1642) and subsequent death (on 21 January 1643/44) of his father. At the time he was knighted and given command of a troop of soldiers (knowing that he would soon be involved in combat) Thomas may have decided to prepare a will. With his eldest son, John, gone from the scene, that left Richard as the logical heir.
Why would John have had a sword in his possession [see the account of the inventory of his property taken at his death]? It's understandable that an average citizen would have a musket [as John had], but A SWORD!
We find a very convincing answer to that in THE FAMILY OF CORBET, ITS LIFE AND TIMES, written by Mrs. Augusta E. Corbett (Volume 1 appeared in 1917; Volume 2 in 1920). Many thanks to Jean C. Noble of The Corbett Study Group for this information. On page 308 of that book, there is reference to the will of Sir Vincent Corbet (Margaret's father) in which he states, "My Daughter Scryven 40s, to make her a ring ... Thomas Scryven my loveinge Sonne-in-Lawe, my Scemyter with a gilt hilt." Sir Vincent died on 18 February 1622, just a few months before John was born. It's interesting that Sir Vincent's two eldest sons were still living but he gave his sword (scimitar) to his son-in-law! Thomas could have given that very-special sword to John after the death of Thomas' eldest son and John's older brother, Thomas, on 16 March 1632/33.
And, of course, the central question of all: Was the John Scriven, born in Wem in October 1623 to Thomas and Margaret, the founder of our Scribner family in America? We believe that he was, although, we admit, it is impossible to provide absolute and conclusive proof of this claim.
EARLY SCRIVEN FAMILY PEDIGREES
The Shropshire Records and Research Centre in Shrewsbury (an agency of the Shropshire County Council) has in its possession two Scriven Family Pedigrees that appear to have been compiled several years after the Visitation of Shropshire in 1623. One (numbered SRR 6001/2791, paginated 591-601) is a part of the Genealogical Collection of George Morris. The other (numbered SRR 6001/4079, paginated 1546-1551), is a part of the Genealogical Collection of Joseph Morris. Neither document is dated, nor are the names of the compilers in evidence.
Document 6001/2791 appears to be the earlier of the two, since the latest-dated entry is that of the birth of one Joseph Hughes in 1785 (only the year is recorded). The other document (6001/4079) appears to have been compiled in the mid-19th Century. The latest-dated entry is that of the death of one Edward Perry of Shrewsbury, 25 January 1852.
Both of these documents expand upon the information given in THE VISITATION OF 1623, albeit in somewhat different ways. The earlier document (6001/2791) basically appears to be a continuation of the 1623 information, adding dates not reported in THE VISTATION, as well as names and dates of descendants of persons listed in the Visitation.
In that document, as well as in the other, a considerable amount of space is given to the addition of information about Mary, daughter of Edward and Anna Agnes (Boterell) Scriven (according to this document, but, in the other, as well as in THE VISITATION OF 1623, she is said to be the daughter of Thomas and Margaret [Corbett] Scriven). Mary married Rev. Reese (or, Rhese) Hughes, Rector of Wem. They had three children. According to 6001/2791, they were Rev. Thomas Hughes, Rev. John Hughes, and Reese Hughes. According to 6001/4079, they were Rev. Thomas Hughes, Scriven Hughes, and Reese Hughes. There are other differences, as well.
Also, the later document (6001/4079) gives us some further information which differs dramatically from that in the 1623 Visitation and the other document. Among those differences are the following:
1. In this later Pedigree, the earliest Scriven on record is not DAVID but WALTER. The document states that "Walter le Scriven" ("on the Roll of Burgesses of Shrewsbury in 1318") married Joyce Cadogan.
2. A son not named in the Visitation, Reginald (son of Walter) "was in 1344 presented to the Rector of Shineton co. Salop by Hugh de Shineton, the Patron thereof."
3. A daughter of Robert and Alice (Corbet) Scriven, JANA (b. abt. 1465), the wife of Roger Poyner of Beslow, is instead named KATHERINE.
4. Of somewhat greater interest to us is a notation directly under the name of Thomas Scriven (Sir Thomas, 1584-1644). That notation reads "son and heir 1623," but no name is recorded. It is our opinion that, if the notation were merely referring to Thomas as being the son and heir of his father, Edward, it would not have included the 1623 date, since the other places where the phrase "son and heir" [or, "daughter and heir"] appear do not include the person's date of birth. Also, Thomas was born in 1584, and he did not accede to the Lordship of Frodesley until the year of his father's death, 1631. Therefore, it is our opinion that this notation is referring to John Scriven, the eldest son of Thomas Scriven, born in Wem on 27 October 1623.
Also as a part of Document 6001/2791(pages 591-595) is a narrative relating some legal proceedings involving members of the Scriven family of Shropshire County. The narrative begins by saying "This family derived its name from the original profession of its progenitor, that of a scrivener or writer, to which was generally added the practice of finding safe persons or places with whom or on which to invest money."
It continues: "The earliest person of the name that I have met with is Reginald Scryveyn who in 45 E 3, Nov. 25, 1371, appears as Bailiff of Shrewsbury in conjunction with Richard Bruton" (a Record of a Land Transfer follows). This is followed by several descriptions of other transactions involving Reginald.
It is interesting to note how the dates of these transactions are shown, as certain days of the week following particular religious observances. One example of this follows:
"Peter de Upton of Salop bound to Reginald d Scriveyn of Salop, L4.0 Sund. after f. of Transl. of S Thomas the martyr, 17 R 2." (This transaction occurred on the Sunday following the Feast marking the Translation of Thomas the Martyr, in the 17th year of the reign of King Richard II). 13 July 1393 is shown in a marginal note.
The narrative includes an (almost unreadable) copy of a document written by one of the Scriven family members. It seems to deal with a grant of land in Condover for a Scriven burial place.
Then, there are drawings of various family crests, "Arms carved in oak in Mr. Scryven's house at Frodesley, now destroyed. A copy of them is in Lord Litford's (?) copy of the Visitation of 1584." The narrative concludes with the record of a land transfer in 1433/34 involving John Scriven and his wife, "Mariona" (Marion Salter).
Photocopies of these two sets of documents were acquired from the Shropshire Records and Research Centre by, and are now in the possession of, Laura Cooper Fenimore.
JOHN SCRIVEN'S EARLY LIFE -- A TIME OF TURMOIL
John Scriven came into this world at a time when his homeland--England--was undergoing enormous social and political upheaval.
To begin with, that small group of religious Separatists (better known as Pilgrims) left England for the New World and had, in 1620, landed at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts Colony. Many more English families would soon follow, taking from England many of its citizens and future leaders.
At the same time, England was about to endure its first-ever Civil War, a war that would change the way of life in England forever, and affect the Scriven family in a very personal way.
James I, King of England at the time of John's birth, died in March 1625. James' last years as ruler had been marked by continual dissension, and quarreling over many issues with the elected Parliament. Also, England was on the brink of war with Spain, and the kingdom's finances were shattered. It was hoped that the new king, James' son, Charles I (who was 25 when he became king), would ease the tensions and turn England toward better and brighter days. But, it was not to be.
Within two years of his ascending to the throne, Charles was on very bad terms with Parliament (continually quarreling over the questions of who held the authority to raise taxes and muster armies, etc.), the kingdom was in serious financial trouble, and England was at war with both Spain and France! Charles dissolved one Parliament after another (1625, 1627, 1628, 1629) and ruled on his own authority.
The making of peace with France in 1629, and with Spain in 1630, provided but a brief respite from armed conflict. In 1641, quarrels with Scotland and uprisings in Ireland led England to again prepare for military action. Leaders of the so-called Long Parliament (assembled in 1640) said that troops could only be raised under officers approved by Parliament. King Charles vehemently disagreed, and set about to raise his own army. As sides began to form in this dispute, the king was generally supported by the nobility, the landed gentry (such as the Scrivens of Frodesley and the newly-knighted Thomas Scriven, who was given the rank of colonel), and the Catholics. The Parliament was supported by merchants, the middle classes and the lower order of the great towns. Thus, the struggle for power began, pitting the Parliament and their army against the king and his army, in a Civil War that would last until 26 April 1646, when the defeated Charles left England and was imprisoned in Scotland. However, it wasn't long before Charles returned to England, where he was essentially under house arrest. He escaped to the Isle of Wight. Then, a much shorter Civil War was waged throughout 1648. After that, the English leaders and their armies came to the conclusion that permanent peace would be impossible as long as Charles was alive. On 30 January 1649 Charles I, King of England, was executed.
It was at about this time that John Scriven--The Immigrant--came to the Colonies. He was among those early settlers who traveled from England to New Hampshire, not necessarily to escape England but to be a part of England's "colonization project." For many of the first colonists, England provided for their passage, and granted them land in the New World (of course, on the condition that they would remain loyal to the English authorities). We don't know exactly when, or on which ship, he made that historic journey across the Atlantic Ocean. Existing records list hundreds of persons who, for one reason or another, left England for the Colonies. However, there are other hundreds [John among them] who made that trip but for whom no record of passage exists. Wurt's MAGNA CHARTA, 7 [op.cit.] indicates that John traveled "from Kent, England, to Hampton, Massachusetts, 1652 (page 2072). It's also possible that he came by way of Barbados. Several persons did, for the reason suggested by the following quote:
"In those days emigrants to New England and Virginia from England had to take an oath of allegiance and [religious] conformity, before they were allowed to leave. In going to Barbadoes or Bermuda, these oaths were not required, consequently many emigrants shipped to Bermuda and Barbadoes and from there came to Virginia and New England" (Frederick Sylvester Stevens [comp.], GENEALOGY OF THE STEVENS FAMILY FROM 1635 TO 1891 [Bridgeport, CT: J.H. Coggswell, Printer, 1891], 7)
John was accepted as an inhabitant of Dover on 5 April 1662 (Alonzo Hall Quint [contrib.], "Extracts From Dover Town Records," NEHGR, 4 [Boston: Samuel G. Drake, Publishers, 1850], 249). He settled in an area just to the northeast of Dover Town known as "Cocheco," where he had a small farm of 20 acres, "said land being at Cochecha near the east side of the plantation of Richard Otis" (from the deed to John's land, when it was sold by his son, John, to Peter Coffin of Dover in 1685, see PROVINCE DEEDS 20:334). It was in September of 1662 that he paid his first taxes (John Scales, COLONIAL ERA HISTORY OF DOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE [1923. Reprint. Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 1977], 242). According to the Inventory of his possessions, listed following his death, John owned a hay barn with 20 acres of land, a few animals (2 oxen, 4 cows, 1 calf, 3 sheep, 1 lamb, 1 mare, a yearling colt and 6 hogs), farm implements and household goods (Inventory of John Scriven's Property, dated 8 October 1675). Of much interest is the fact that there is also listed 1 musket and sword, most likely, the sword referred to above as having been given to his father by Sir Vincent Corbet.
With regard to Mary Scriven, it had been commonly believed that she was a daughter of Edward Hilton of Dover. However, that assumption has been shown to be incorrect. Edward Hilton had two daughters, neither of whom was named Mary. One of the daughters, Susannah, married Christopher Palmer. The other daughter, Sobriety, married Henry Moulton (Noyes, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE [op. cit.], 332). One historian, Rev. J. Woodbury Scribner, states that "The Widow Mary lived on for 25 years after the death of her husband" (Sinnett, HISTORY OF THE SCRIBNER FAMILIES [op. cit.], 18). Wurt's MAGNA CHARTA, 7 [op. cit.] indicates that Mary died in 1695 (page 2072).
One of their sons, Edward, was impressed into the English Navy in 1679 (Noyes, 615). No further information about Edward is known.
General Notes: Child - John Scribner Sr.
John and his siblings grew up during the time of one of the most costly struggles the early Colonies ever faced, King Philip's War (1675-1676). Native American Indian tribes had formed a confederation under the leadership of King Philip (also known as Pometacon), chief of the Wapanoags. During this war, one-half of the towns in New England were attacked, and 12 of those towns were completely destroyed. The Colonists banded together and organized a common army (the very earliest predecessor of the U.S. Army) to defend against the Indian attacks. In that force were 527 men from Massachusetts, 315 from Connecticut, and 158 from Plymouth Colony. One of every 16 men was killed, making this the most costly war, percentage-wise, ever fought on American soil.
John Scribner was a blacksmith. He and his family moved from Dover to Exeter in the early months of 1698, after selling the Dover holdings inherited from his father.
Information about the Scribners who lived in Exeter is sketchy and incomplete, owing to the fact that the Exeter Town Hall burned in 1870, destroying most of the Vital Records of the town. What few records remain are bound in a single volume, which is kept at the Exeter Town Office.
In 1698 John received 60 acres of land from the Town of Exeter. Also that year of 1698, he united with the newly-formed Congregational Church at Exeter. He is listed among those who, according to Hampton Church Records, on 11 September 1698, were dismissed from that church "in order to their being incorporated into a church state, in Exeter." Another record lists John as an original member of the Exeter Church. According to that record, Exeter's newly-called Pastor, Rev. John Clark, was to be ordained 21 September 1698. "On the Sunday preceding the ordination a confession of faith and covenant, which had been previously agreed upon, were signed by the following named persons, who were the first members of the first church in Exeter, the organization of which has ever since been maintained" (MEN AND THINGS OF EXETER, SKETCHES FROM THE HISTORY OF AN OLD NEW HAMPSHIRE TOWN [Exeter: The News-Letter Press, 1871], 57).
In 1709, John purchased land in Exeter from the estate of John Glidden, and land in Kingston from William Long. In 1723, he and seven others (including his son, John, Jr.) purchased land in Exeter from Clement Moody, Jr., which land the seven buyers divided between themselves in 1725 (SCRIBNER NOTES [op. cit.], 5). Then, in 1725, he received another 50 acres of land from the Town (Bell, HISTORY OF EXETER [op. cit.], 141-143). At the same time (12 April 1725), his sons John, Jr., Joseph, Edward and Samuel received grants of land from the Town. As a result of these land purchases, John owned about 200 acres in Kingston, and another large holding of land (which, in his will, he called "My Swamp or Meadow Ground Laying upon the South Side of Exeter River").
We learn the names of John and Elizabeth's children (at least, those who were living on 2 March 1735/36) from John's will. In the will he speaks of sons John, Edward, Samuel and Joseph (whom he named as Executor, leading us to suspect that Joseph was the oldest), and daughters Elizabeth Moody, Mary Gadon [Gordon], Abigail Young, Susanna Mudget and Sarah Moody.
John and his son John Jr. are mentioned as part-purchasers of King's Falls Saw Mill in Exeter on 7 August 1723, along with Nathaniel Glidden, Henry Wadleigh, Daniel Ladd and others (N. H. Provincial Deeds, 14:179, quoted by G. W. Chamberlain in his book, THE DESCENDANTS OF CHARLES GLIDDEN OF PORTSMOUTH AND EXETER, NEW HAMPSHIRE [op. cit.], 77).
Of much interest is the fact that John and his siblings chose to change their name from Scriven to Scribner. While we have no recorded explanation of this name-change, we might advance some possible reasons, as follows:
One possibility is that, by continuing to be known as Scrivens, they would forever be linked to the legacy of the disgraced King Charles I, to whom their grandfather, Thomas, had given his loyalty and for whom he had given his life. Add to this the hatred they must have felt toward King Charles' son, Charles II, who was ruler of England when their brother, Edward, was taken from them and impressed into the English Navy, never to be heard from again.
Another possibility is that they did not want to be mistaken for the family of the Rev. William Scriven (1629-1713). Rev. Scriven (of no relation to John, that we know about) was a well-known Baptist minister in New England, especially Boston and Kittery, Maine. The prominent (indeed, state-sponsored) form of religion was Congregationalism, of which John and family were adherents. Therefore, Rev. Scriven and his followers left New England and moved to South Carolina, where they exercised an incredible formative influence upon Southern Baptists (Noyes, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE [op.cit.], 615).
Yet another possibility is that they strongly felt the need to establish a new identity in this new land of Colonial America.
General Notes: Child - Elizabeth Scribner
It appears likely that Elizabeth died prior to 3 December 1724, which is when Samuel prepared his will. There is no mention of Elizabeth in it.
A question exists as to whether Samuel re-married following the death of Elizabeth. Even the chronicler of the Eastman Family, Guy S. Rix of Concord, New Hampshire, states (in his HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE EASTMAN FAMILY IN AMERICA [Concord: The author, 1901],13) that Samuel's second marriage, on 17 September 1719, was to Sarah Fifield, who died in Kingston, NH, 3 August 1726. However, there are compelling reasons as to the inaccuracy of that assumption. First, Rix is confusing Shuah Fifield (the woman in question) with her mother, Sarah. Second, Samuel was born in 1657. Shuah Fifield was born in Kingston on 13 March 1702/03, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Sherburne) Fifield (Kingston Town Records, quoted by Kathleen Hosier in KINGSTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE, EARLY FAMILIES, PATRIOTS & SOLDIERS [op. cit.], 65). That makes Samuel 46 years older than Shuah. Third, Kingston Town Records record the marriage on 17 September 1719 of Shuah Fifield (who died 3 August 1726) and Samuel's son, Samuel Eastman, Jr. This is corroborated by David W. Hoyt in THE OLD FAMILIES OF SALISBURY AND AMESBURY, MASSACHUSETTS,1[op. cit.], 146. A fourth reason would be that, in his will, Samuel makes no mention of Shuah.
General Notes: Child - Thomas B. Scribner
Thomas was a land owner, churchman and civil official who was highly regarded in each town where they lived. They were among the first settlers of Kingston. Following Thomas' death, Hannah married Charles Hunt of Kingston in 1729 (Noyes, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE [op. cit.], 363).

General Notes: Husband - George Hall
George Hall and his wife Mary were the ancestors of the Halls of Taunto n. They emigrated, supposedly, from Devonshire County, England, in 1636-3 7. George Hall is recorded as a proprietor of land in Duxbury, Massachuset ts in, 1637, about the date of his settlement in "Cohannet,"--Taunto n. He was one of the forty-six original proprietors of the first territori al "purchase" of the Indian Sachem Massasoit, including a tract of eight m iles (an oblong, square, which in 1883 consisted of the territories of Tau nton, Berkley, Raynham, extending to Mansfield).
George had a twelve acre share, in connection with Richard Williams, Jo hn and Walter Dean and others, who had similar shares, spanning the Taunt on River, on the banks of which they erected their first dwellings. The ir homesteads were on Dean Street. George was one of the founders of the t own of Taunton in 1639, was admitted as a freeman in 1643, was enroll ed to bear arms that year, was town constable in 1645, was a member of t he board of the supervising council in 1657, and was chairman of the boa rd of selectmen from 1666 to 1669, the time of his death.
He was one of the founders of the Pilgrim Congregational Church and Socie ty of Taunton and contributed liberally to its support. He was also o ne of the stock proprietors of the first iron "bloomery" which was establi shed by the Leonards and other citizens of Taunton; he was its first cle rk in 1656 and was succeeded after his death by his son John. The "bloomer y" became known as the Taunton Iron Works. The bar iron manufactured fr om the native ore dug in the area was made a "circulating medium" in busin ess transactions because of the shortage of specie. The History of Taunto n, Massachusetts by Samuel Hopkins Emery, published in 1893 by D. Mas on & Co., Syracuse, N.., p. 618, reveals that George Hall, with others, w as originally involved in the organization of the Iron Works Company in 16 53-54. On p. 619 the statement is made that "At this time, 1660, an arrang ement was made by the shareholders to lease the works to George Hall and h is associates, Hezekiah Hoare and Francis Smith." The three took into part nership the following men: William Pole, Walter Deane, Joseph Wilbore, Jo hn Dean, Anthony Slocum, Thomas Linkin, Sr,. William Parker, James Leonar d, Jonah Austin, Sr., John Parker, Peter Pitts, James Philips, and Henry W ithington (of Dorchester). The lease was for five years.
In October of 1669, he became seriously ill; he called his friends, Deaco ns Richard Williams and Walter Dean, and made his will on the 16th, witnes sed by them, and died on October 30. His widow Mary was appointed executri x, and the will was probated in March, 1670. After his death, his widow a nd sons John, Joseph, and Samuel were shareholders in the iron works. Geor ge Hall was one of the largest landholders in Taunton, and he divided it a mong his sons. They were also among the proprietors of the large tract, ca lled the "Taunton North Purchase," which included the towns of Norton, Eas ton, and portions of Mansfield and Raynham, where Halls settled as farme rs and business men.
General Notes: Child - John Hall
He took the oath of fidelity in 1659; was on a jury of inquest in 1664; w as constable in 1666; succeeded his father as shareholder and clerk in t he iron bloomery in 1669, in 1671, and in 1677; was on the board of select men in 1684, 1685, 1686, and 1691; was on the committee of seven for consi dering proprietors' claims in 1680; was deputy to Plymouth Colony gener al court in 1689-91; was a member of the Congregational church, contributi ng five acres of land in its aid in 1687, under the teachings of Rev. Samu el Danford; was a large landholder and a large proprietor in "Taunton Sou th Purchase" of 1663 and in the "North Purchase of 1668, also having a rig ht in the original "Purchase"; and was a leading man in business affairs.
General Notes: Child - Joseph Hall
Joseph was a tailor by trade and resided on the homestead inherited from h is father on Dean Street, Taunton. He was a large landholder by the rig ht of his father in the original purchase, had fifty-two acres in the Sou th Purchase and a portion in the North Purchase. He was constable and surv eyor in 1667-80, was a ready promoter of the Pilgrim church and town affai rs, and was a share owner in the iron works. According to one source, h is wife, Mary, was a daughter of
Nathaniel Bell.
General Notes: Child - Samuel Hall
Samuel Hall's homestead was about a mile east of his father's, and it w as near the bloomery which he was largely interested in supplying. He w as a large land holder, sharing in the "Taunton North and South Purchases ," also inheriting and purchasing in the original tract. Samuel held min or offices in town, was a member of the original church, and contributed f our acres towards improving the parsonage for Rev. Samuel Danforth.
