"After the final overthrow of the Earls of Dunbar and March, in January, 1436, the Homes succeeded to a portion of their vast estates, and to a great deal of power on the Borders as Wardens of the Eastern Marches. Sir Alexander Home, the head of the family, was created a peer by the title of Lord Home, 2nd August, 1473, and seems to have possessed considerable diplomatic ability, and he was frequently employed by James III in carrying out important negotiations with the English Court. His father and uncle had held in succession the office of bailie of the lands belonging to the monastery of Coldingham, and he induced the prior and chapter to make the office hereditary in his family. He exerted all his influence in that situation to obtain possession of the large conventual property, and indeed seized and appropriated it to his own use. He was, therefore, greatly irritated by the attempt of King James, with the consent of the Pope, to attach the revenues of the priory to the Chapel Royal at Stirling, and joined the disaffected nobles in their conspiracy against that ill-fated sovereign. His Border spearmen contributed not a little to the defeat and death of James at Sauchie. The Homes obtained a liberal share of the fruits of the victory gained by the rebellious barons. The revenues of Coldingham, the prize for which Lord Home had rebelled and fought against his sovereign, were allowed to remain in his possession, and Alexander Home, second baron, his grandson and heir, was appointed immediately after the murder of James to the office of Steward of Dunbar, and obtained besides a large share of the administration of the Lothians and Berwickshire."

Savages states that no record of Richard Treat can be found inMasschusetts prior to his settlement at Wethersfield, Connecticut. Whilesome sources report that he was a representative at the first GeneralCourt in CT in 1637, Savages finds no record of him until he was chosenas Assistant from 1658-1665. Cutter syas that he was deputy to theGeneral Court in 1644 and perhaps earlier and held that office until1657-58. He was a juror in 1643, an assistant or magistrate eight times,from March 1658 to 1665. He was named in the Royal Charter joining thecolonies of New Haven and Connecticut 23 April 1662. and a member of Gov.Winthrop's Council 1663-64.

Rev Zachary is my director ancestor. I have quite a lot on his family b ut little on Zachary himself - even though he is probably the most interes ting character on the pedigree and a very different character from his ill ustrious father (John) and extraordinarily famous cousin (Richard). I ha ve the pedigree of Seraphin which continued for at least five generation s. Balsemus's line continued to present day. (I've met them). Leofrick a nd Juvenal died relatively young and didn't marry. Theobald and Amethist l ived on, apparently unmarried, a became old men. Valentine's line continu ed to the present day - I'm one of them! I have the full pedigree with dat es etc of all these wonderful people. I even have Rev. Zachary's handwritt en record of the times of day when his children were born, and his Will a nd some of those of his family. I'd love to know more about the backgrou nd to the names he gave his children - they are all highly significant a nd not at all the names you'd expect a priest to use. However, I cannot fi nd any association with the names Balsemus or Amethyst. Incidently, Balsem us lived at St. Ewe in Cornwall, and even today there hangs on the wa ll of the church the seating plan showing where he and the rest of the sma ll congregation sat. I think he'd be somewhat tickled to know it was sti ll there after 400 years.
