Old Kittery and Her Families
Wittum This name appears also as Witham and in other forms. Peter Wittum and his wife Redicum (also Redigoe and Reddingon) are first mentioned in 1660. He has a grant in 1665. He lived a little north of Sturgeon Creek. On 14 March 1672/3 he bought from Abraham Conley of Kittery a parcel of swamp for the sumof five pounds. Peter and his wife Reddigoe signed a deed with their marks 17 July 1673 (York Deeds Book I) to "sell to Nicholas Hodgsden two acres of upland and swamp. On 18 Sep 1678 Petter Wittum of Kittery in the County of York, planter, sold to Nicholas Hodgsden for 11 pounds, 10 shillings, the full and just quantity of 40 acres of swamp and upland. It is to be understood that this 40 acres was agrant given Peter Wittum by the selectmen of Kittery 2 Jan 1665." Both are mentioned in 1698. He has a wife Eunice in 1723. His family appears to have been:
Hannah m. Constant Rankin of York?
Peter b. 1657; m (1) 1684 Agnes ____, (2) 3 Aug 1713 Judith, dau of Moses
Gattensby and granddau of John Gattensby.
Ruth m. Moses Bowdey 26 Nov 1697
Sarah m. William Saunders Dec 1687; (2) George Brawn
Ichabod, mentioned in 1675
William, perhaps m. Mary Nason and lived in Dover. A William Wittu m. in Newington, NH,
12 March 1717 Elizabeth Crocket and signed a petition there.
John, had a grant in 1703; m. Elizabeth Tidy 8 Jan 1707-8
It is impossible to determine the family of Peter Wittum 2nd. He had a son Ichabod, named in 1730. Other sons may have been James who m. Elizabeth Drown 12 March 1720, and Daniel who is mentioned with wife Hannah in 1729, and Samuel who witnessed a deed in 1723, and Eunice who m. about 1725, Richard Brawn and lived in York.
The children of John and Elizabeth (Tidy) Wittum were:
Elizabeth b. 13 Sept 1708
John b. 25 May 1711
Zebulon b. 08 Aug 1713
Eleazer b. 08 Dec 1715
Gideon b. 21 Sep 1717
James b. 16 Jun 1719
Nathaniel b. 23 Dec 1721
Katherine b. 10 Nov 1723
On 16 March 1685, Peter "conveys, assigns and sets over one-half of my premises to my son William. I reserve for my own use, during the time of my own and my wife's natural lives and to include the side fence for security and to be kept tenantable. My son is to pay me 14 bushels of Indian corn yearly and 7 bushels to be paid to my wifeyearly following my decease."
On 15 Jan 1690, he sold to Samuel Small for 60 pounds "all that messuage or tenement which I formerly lived upon with about 16 acres of land belonging scituate on Sturgeon Creek." On 16 Jan 1704, Peter sold fpr 4 pounds to William Furbish "a parcel of land scituate lying in Kittery containing 25 acres."
Land records are not the only books in which Peter and his wife were frequently mentioned. For example, he was on a list of sufferers from the Indians in the Second War, and both were mentioned more than once in the York County, Maine records for not attending church, for playing cards, and for drinking. In 1661, Peter was accused of slandering James Heard's wife, and in 1684 he was taken to court for being drunk and putting his wife and children out of doors.

General Notes: Husband - Ilus King Troy
Assaracus succeeded his father and continued to rule at Dardania, near Mou
ntIda, while Ilus chose to move closer to the sea. Ilus took part in gam
es held by an unnamed Phrygian king, where he won the wrestling match. H
is prize was fifty boys and fifty girls, as well as dappled cow. A seer to
ld Ilus that he must follow the cow to where it lay down. The cow rest
ed on the Hill of Phrygian Ate.
That night, Ilus prayed for a favourable sign from Zeus, and that was wh
en the wooden statuette of Athena, the Palladium, fell out of heaven, besi
de Ilus' tent. This Palladium would protect Troy from falling to the Gree
ks in the Trojan War, while the image remained in the city. With this sig
n, Ilus founded the city that he named Ilium, after himself. Ilium was, ho
wever, often called Troy, after his father.
So the two brothers began to rule two separate houses in two different cit
ies.
On the Trojan line, Ilus, who was the founder and king of Troy, married Eu
rydice, and became the father Laomedon. As it was said before, his daught
er Themiste married his nephew, Capys (of theDardanian line). His son Lao
medon succeeded Ilus.
General Notes: Child - Laomedon King Troy
Laomedon was the son of Ilus, the founder of Troy, and of Eurydice. Laomed
onbecame king of Ilium (Troy), after his father's death.
The new king married Strymo, Placia or Leucippe. Whichever woman he marrie
d, he was the father of Podarces (Priam) and many other sons. He had at le
ast one daughter, Hesione. His son Tithonus was abducted by Eos, godde
ss of dawn, and taken to Ethiopia or Syria. The goddess bore him a son Mem
non.
Laomedon was known as the king, for his arrogance and his impiety, and w
ho refused to honors his promises.
Poseidon and Apollo, possibly punished for rebelling against Zeus, h
ad to workfor one year for a mortal. The two gods disguised as builder
s, was hired to work alongside with a mortal, Aeacus, son of Zeus and Aegi
na, (father of Peleus and Telamon), to build the walls of Troy. Poseidon a
nd Apollo wanted the vine of gold as payment for their work. Laomedon agre
ed.
After the gods finished building the wall, Laomedon refused to pay their w
ages for their services. Apollo caused the plague within the city, while P
oseidon sends a sea-monster to ravage the Trojan countryside.
The seers told Laomedon, that land would be spare, if the king would sacri
fice his daughter to the sea-monster. Chaining his daughter, Hesion
e, to a rock and waited for monster to arrive.
Returning from performing the ninth labour (fetching the girdle of Hippoly
te), Heracles stopped at Troy. Learning what was about to happen, Heracl
es wanted Laomedon's immortal horses in exchange for rescuing his daughte
r. Laomedon agreed. After killing the monster, again Laomedon refused to p
ay. Heracles angry at the Trojan king betrayal on his promise, plann
ed to return with an army, after he finished performing the twelve labours
.
Heracles raised an army in Tiryns, and the Argonaut hero, Telamon of Salam
is, son of Aeacus, joined the hero. After capturing the city, Laomedon w
as killed, along with many of his sons, and Heracles gave Heisone to Telam
on as concubine.
Heracles allowed Hesioneto ransomed one captive. Hesione ransomed her you
ngest brother Podarces, offering her veil as ransom. Podarces became ki
ng of Troy, and changed his name to Priam, which means "Ransom". Priam w
as also Troy's last king.

THE ROOSEVELT STANDARD, 30 November 1914:
A GRAND WEDDING
Was the Miles-Edwards Nuptials Which Took Place in Salt Lake City
"A very pretty wedding took place on Wednesday, November 18, at 7:00 o'clock a.m., at the palatial home of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Miles, 12 South First West street, Salt Lake City, in the presence of the family and a few immediate friends.
The contracting parties were Miss Lucretia Miles and Mr. Edward P. Evans, both very charming and popular young people.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Miles, and for the occasion wore a white satin dress trimmed with Irish lace, and a wreath of orange blossoms which her mother wore at her marriage 32 years ago. Miss Miles is an accomplished young lady and looked beautiful and happy in her wedding finery.
The groom wore a black broadcloth suit, and is a prominent plumber in Salt Lake City, being a member of the firm of Miggley Co. & Evans. He is a congenial companion, and very popular among his friends.
The happy couple will be at home to their many friends after December 1 at No. 12 South First West street, Salt Lake City. May their honeymoon last until the end of time is the wish of the Standard."

ROSS MONTGOMERY TELLS OF TRIALS OF EARLY SETTLERS
Geneva, July 8.
Among the many Ashtabula county citizens who were born in log houses is Ross Montgomery, of North Geneva, a veteran of the Civil War, who relates many an interesting anecdote of the early days in this locality. Mr. Montgomery comes from a patriotic family. Not only was he in the Civil War, but his son, Fred, was in the Spanish-American conflict, and his grandfather (Ora Evans, Jr.) and his great-grandfather (Ora Evans, Sr.) were both minute men in the revolution. Ora Evans, Jr. was at that time only 15 years of age. The two Evan's were both with Washington at Valley Forge- that terrible winter when men starved and froze to death at camp. Early days in Conneaut and Geneva were fraught with numerous adventures of Indians, bears and wolves. Lewis Montgomery, father of Ross, carried the mail from Conneaut into Western Pennsylvania on horse back when he was only 12 or 13 years old. He had to pass through long stretches of woods infested with wolves. One night he was unusually late- he sought refuge in an unoccupied cabin, thinking of climbing in the joist overhead, but finding wild hogs had taken refuge in the cabin, he decided to take a chance with the wolves. He mounted his horse and drove home unmolested. A fiddler who traversed the country for dancing - fine people would come for 20 miles around, was treed by wolves all in one night. Early next morning some passing hunters frightened away the wolves and rescued him. During the time that Lewis Montgomery lived in Conneaut there occurred the troubles with the British and Indians, just proceeding - just before the War of 1812. One day a messenger brought word to Conneaut that the Indians were coming from Canada and would probably cross at Detroit. Grandfather James Montgomery said the North Geneva Veteran and other settlers took what arms they had and went on foot through unbroken wilderness toward Detroit to head off the Indians. When they reached the Maumee River near the present city of Toledo, there was found to be a false report. Old Indians scared children, and while the families were left unguarded an old Indian frequently came into the cabins, seized the children by the hair and would say, "By and by, we'll come and take your scalps off". Later someone shot him and his body was found floating in the Conneaut Creek. The Montgomerys and the Harpers composed the majority of settlers in Conneaut. Another old Indian, Armstrong, entered the little store at the settlement one evening, carrying an ax halve with which he shoved the children back from the fire, "Me Armstrong" he exclaimed, where upon a settler replied, "My name is Armstrong". "Ugh," said the Indian, "maybe you Nostrong".
GRANDFATHER GRADED HARMON HILL
Grandfather Montgomery graded the hill by Harmon Distillery in Ashtabula - near the present Children's Home. This is the first road put across the flats there. Later Grandfather's family moved to Mechanicsville, and Grandfather built the first grist mill and the first dam across the Grand River in Ashtabula County. He cut the road through from Mechanicsville to Windsor, felling the trees and logging them off in preparation of the road to follow. While they lived there, wolves used to howl every night. One Sunday the wolves came across the river and killed some sheep while the families were at church at Austinburg, east of their home, following the river bank. That was the first church in the County. The people went by foot and by horseback following the bridal path. Father started on Sunday for church on foot. He heard scratching and saw two bear cubs coming down a tree. Then he saw the mother bear at the foot of the tree. It was a big hollow tree and she was waiting for the cubs to come down. Father threw his hat at then and gave chase, but they outran him. My father, Lewis Montgomery, afterward moved to Geneva. He and his wife lived on the farm where John Anderson now resides - suburban East Main Street. One day a neighboring farmer undertook to cut some wood in the forest. His dog returned with his tail bristling, six wolves in pursuit. Backing up against the tree- he fought them off with an axe, finally driving them off but not until his clothing was nearly torn from his body, and he was crying from exhaustion and fright. Grandfather James Montgomery boated provisions from Buffalo to Conneaut and also as far west as Toledo. He was near enough to the scene of Perry's Victory on Lake Erie (1812) to hear the firing of the guns. After father had lived in Geneva for a while he cleared the farm where Merritt Mans now lives, west of the North Center of the township. Later he sold the farm and moved to the lake, where Pearl Beach is now located, buying a tract of Government land. He and Uncle James Montgomery, Jr., built a log house. While building it they slept in a hollow sycamore log for three weeks. Some of those trees were five feet through the butt; people used to use them for small houses. One night their little dog made a fuss but they did not stir out. The next morning they found bear tracks near the log. The log house they built was the one I was born in. Afterwards father got stone out of the lake and built an upright part for a new stone house. I was about three years old when they commenced to build the stone house in April 1845. At the beginning of the Civil War the Lake used to cut in there and caused the bank to slide off. Frequently during storms the spray would hit the bank and fly over the house. I would lie in bed nights and hear the water striking the bank. Lewis Montgomery sold his place to the late J.F, Goodrich (father of J.W. Goodrich) in 1864, while I was in the war. After the war Mr. Goodrich tore down the old house, which the old inhabitant's wife remembers. Part of the stone is now in the foundation of Bert Gage’s barn on Wheeler Creek Road. Just before the war, boats were built on the lake shore near here. Alanson Bailey who recently died in Madison at the age of 94 years, and Daniel Bailey built a number of boats at Madison Dock, at the end of Dock Road. The "Red, White and Blue" and" Moses Gage" were the largest on the lake then. Captain Butler built another, a three master schooner. Frank Goodrich built a scow in 1865, right by our old place. Just west of us the Hemingway boys, Mack and Alanda built the largest scow on the lakes. It was called the "Forest Chief". It was built near where Mr. Webber’s cottage is, east of McLaughlin’s. Before the war (about 1855) still further past, and just west of the marsh - at the end of the Padenarum, a scow of good size was built by Parker & Wyman. It used to carry all kinds of freight along the shore. Lots of oak staves were shipped from there to Cleveland, Buffalo and Erie. "There was lots of oak timber in this region. They would put a gang of men in the woods cutting trees- two men would use whip-saws. They would first chop the trees down with the axe, hew them into square timbers sometimes 3 feet square; fasten them up on tripods and line them;, then two men would take a rip saw, one man above and one below, and "whip-saw" the plank. Several yoke of oxen would be used to drag the planks to where they built the ships. There they would be fitted, planed and sawed smooth. Often one end of the plank would drag in the mud and the oxen would be up to their bellies in the mire. Boys were employed to burro holes and drive spikes. First the keel and then the ribs of the boats would be built. Three planks would be used for the sides. It was all white oak in those days. Cords and cords of this timber were wasted.
ENTERED ARMY WHEN 18
I volunteered and entered the Civil War when a boy of 18. In the last year of the war I was on Sherman's March to the Sea. My son, Fred, was also in the service in The Spanish American War and came home with Typhoid Fever. He was in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky, whence I brought him home. My uncle, James Montgomery, went to Kentucky and taught school there for several years. He married a Kentucky girl and moved to Kansas. They were trying for a number of years to make Kansas a slave state. The "Free-State" Men determined that this should not be done. James Montgomery, John Brown, (The Famous John Brown), and Jim Lane commanded quite a force of Kansas "Free-State" Men. There was fighting in Kansas and Missouri before the war, and it was through their efforts that Kansas was made a Free-State. About 1858, (the time John Brown was captured at Harper's Ferry, after a battle there and sentenced to be hung) James Montgomery came east to see what the sentiment was. James thought he would save Brown's life. James Montgomery lectured here at the town hall. He then went through the Eastern states on the same mission, but he had to give it up and let the law take its course. James Montgomery died shortly after the Civil War, at Mound City, Kansas. He commanded a Brigade of Negro Troops.

graduated Bowdoin College, in 1815, resided in Augusta, was a
representative of Maine in Congress, and her senator there, and died in
1867, aged 70.
I do notfind that William A. Evans was a graduate of any college. He
was, however, a lawyer and lived in Washington, D. C., many years as a
clerk. At the outbreak of the rebellion he came North, and is now, it is
said, in the Aroostook region, Maine. His wife Abigail died Feb. 12,
