John "Rev." Mayo, Jr., Born: April 02, 1598 in Cattistock,Northamptonshire, England, Died: May 03, 1676 in Yarmouth, Barnstable,Massachusetts He was born while Elizabeth I was Queen, and a boy duringthe reign of James I, he went to Magdelen College, Oxford University, in1615, but did not
graduate. He wed and had all his children in Northamptonshire. He was aprotestant preacher in a
time when the harrassed clery were obliged to disguise themselves and touse assumed names.
The whole family came to the Colonies in 1635 aboard the "Truelove" fromLondon. On March 3, 1639/40, in New Plymouth, at a General Court, Wm.Bradford, Governor, Thomas Prence, Miles Standish.... assistants Mr. JohnMayo of Barnstable, Mass., and Job Cole admitted Freemen in this courtand Sworn, (the term Freemen connotes men of peaceable conversation,orthodox in the fundamentals of religion). He was a "pious and learnedminister." He was steady, reasonable and patient. He served thecongregation at Nausett (Eastham) as a "teaching elder" and moved therefrom Barnstable in 1646.
In 1654, they moved again, to Boston, so that he could become the firstpastor of the 2'nd Church of Boston, "transplanted from the smallest townon Cape Cod to the largest in the Bay, the 'Metropolis of America'. Washe not quite a person? He was, humanly speaking, one who has done theimpossible!"
He was an overseer at Harvard College, and he attended the graduation ofthe son of a fellow overseer, Increase Mather, who became Pastor afterJohn. He was paid 65 Lbs. as his salary. He resigned his pastorateApril 15, 1672/73, after 33 years in the pulpit. The North Churchpensioned him, not because he was needy, but for all the good he haddone. He was a sincere 17th century religionist. He was a resourcefulman whose mentality was far above average. He helped to found two townsand three churches. He "never lost a friend except by death." "I havealways supposed that Mayo was quite a
person. I dare say he has not had his justice from the historians, quietpeople who mind their own business seldom do."

JOHN MAYO: A Colleague of Rev. Lothrop. Came in 1638, sworn freeman 3Mar 1640, ordained 15 Apr 1640. He removed to Eastham in 1646, then toBoston where he became the first minister of the Second Church (i.e.,North Church) on 9 Nov 1655. He was dismissed from that position in 1673at an advanced age. He then went to Barnstable and lived at Eastham andYarmouth.
The Settlement of Rev. John Mayo's Estate [MD9:119-121]:
Rev. John Mayo died at Yarmouth, Mass. in May 1676, without having made awill, and his estate was settled during the following month, theagreement of the heirs being dated 15 Jun 1676. "In 1647, the town deeded him land for a fishhouse on Crowell's Pint
below his dwelling. In 1650, Capt. Samuel Mayo became Master of the bark
Desire, the first important ship to hail from Barnstable. ...She was
built at Marblehead in the summer of 1636, of 120 tons burden. ...the
bark Warwick. Her first
master for whom she sailed was Cat. William Pierce, 'a skillful navigator
and a Christaian gentleman.' She first took Endecott's soldiers to Block
Island for the Pequot War, and the next year carried them supplies. Then
she saiIed to the West Indies with prisoners, rum, and salt fish; to
return in seven months laden with cotton, salt, and the first negroes to
be enslaved in New England. In 1639 she made from Boston to Gravesend in
the Thames in 23 days. In her Captain Pierce made his last voyage to the
Bahamas, where he was killed by the Spaniards at New Providence on 13
July 1641."
In 1654 Pastor William Leverick of Sandwich had accepted Channcy's
ideas about night communion. In search of peace he set out for Oyster
Bay, LI, with his family and a company inclusive of the Samuel Mayos, in
the Desire". In Hampstead Harbor, the bark with her cargo was taken by
Capt. Thomas Baxter, a RI privateer commissioned to act against the
Dutch. He was repudiated for the act, arrested in Ct. and prosecuted by
Ct Court by the owners of the "Desire".

He married William Lumpkin's dau Thomasine, of Yarmouth, who had the
same given name as her own mother and her mother-in-law. In 1647 the
town deeded him land for a fish-house, on Cromwell's Point below his
dwelling. He had, besides fishing smacks, coasters,a dn ran a packet to
Boston.

General Notes: Husband - William Rogers Smith
Served on boats as rivermen on the Mississippi River acrrying produce and other articles in use at that time. It is said he helped bring the firdt steamship into New Orleans.
Letter from researcher states William owned at least one slave. Also reportedly died 4-2-1853 but this doesn't fit with daughters birth years. He may have died of Yellow Fever which killed 8000 people in New Orleans during 1853.
William and Sam Smith were both grown young men when their parents came
to Texas and had served on boats as river men on the Mississippi River,
plying flatboats to and from various points, carrying produce and other
articles in use at that time. It is said they assisted in bring the first
steamboat into New Orleans.
Several of these Smith boys bought land and once owned the entire strip
up and down Cross Timber Creek from the Cal Smith home to the Bob Taylor
place. William Smith once contracted for land farther down the Jefferson
Road about the Armstrong place, but his death later rendered him unable
to return and develop it. He was married in New Orleans and became father
of two daughters, Josephine and Clara Agnes, before he was taken by
death. His widow was later married to Mr. Gid Witham who soon came with
the family to Texas and Hopkins County where they continued to make their
home. These girls were afterward married, Josephine to Elisha Clapp and
Clara to Will Posey.

in Woburn, Feb. 15, 1675-6; m., Nov. 9, 1697, Hannah Convers, b. June 12,
1680, dau. of Maj. James and Hannah (Carter) Convers, of Woburn.
Jacob Richardson passed his life in Woburn, of which town he was
selectman, 1734. He died Aug. 9, 1763. His wife Hannah died Sept. 7,
1748.
In his will, dated 1750, proved 1763, he mentions as then living his
sons Jacob and Edward, and also his dau., Hannah Belknap.He makes
bequests to the "children of dau. Esther Wyman, deceast; children of dau.
Patience Wright, deceast; dau.-in-law Mary, relict of son enoch, and her
two children, mary and Sarah."
The receipts of the legatees on receiving their portions, were signed,
among others, by Isaac Richardson, Josiah Richardson, Addison Richardson,
Oliff (Olive) Richardson, and Hannah Richardson. Isaac, Josiah and
Addison describe themselves as children of Mr. Isaac and Elizabeth
Richardson.

Jacob Richardson,eldest son of Jacoband Hannah (Convers) Richardson,
of Woburn; born there, Sept. 3, 1699; m., June 11, 1724, elizabeth Wyman,
b. May 1, 1705, eldest dau.of capt. Benjamin and Elizabeeth (Hancock)
Wyman. Her mother was a dau. of nathaniel and Mary Hancock, of Cambridge.
Benjamin Wyman, her father, was the eighth son of Francis and Abigail
Wyman, mentioned in a note under [1557] as among the first settlers of
Woburn, 1641.
Jacob Richardson lived in Woburn.He died there, intestate, Oct. 13,
1771, aged 72. His wife Elizabeth died Oct. 20, 1749.

Edward, her father, was b. 1689, and was a son of Maj. William Johnson,
and grandson of Capt. Edward Johnson, from Kent, eng., the author of the
"Wonder-Working Providence." Ichabod Johnson, slain in the "Pigwacket
fight," 1725, was a brother of Edward, her father.
Enoch Richardson passed his life in Woburn, and died in the summer of
1958. His will, dated May 23, 1858, proved July 31, 1758, mentions wife
Mary, his children Mary, Sarah, and Enoch, and his fatherJacob, who died
1763.
