REV. JOHN WIGHT first minister of New Marblehead, now Windham, was the son of Daniel and Annah -DEWING-WRIGHT of Dedham, Mass. John was the youngest son born in that town, Apr. 22, 1699. He graduated at Harvard College in 1721 and for several years was a teacher in the schools of his native town, during which time he doubtless studied Divinity with some local minister of the vacinity. In 1728 he appears to have resided at Bristol, Mass. and was perhaps preaching there. On July 3, 1728, he married Mary daughter of Jabez and Mary-GAY-POND of Dedham. He appears to have lived in Bristol several years after his marriage and had four children born there: John, Anna, Daniel and Mary. Of these children, nothing is known. His wife Mary died, in Bristol, June 19, 1735, and in October 1737 he married Mrs. Deliverance CARPENTER, of Rehoboth. They had two children born in Bristol and both died there in 1740. On March 25, 1743. Mr. Wright accepted a call from the proprietors of New Marblehead to settle there in the work of the gospel ministry and immediately came here and was ordained Dec. 14, 1743, and lived here until his death. He died May 8, 1753. At the time of his settlement Mr. Wights family consisted of his wife Deliverance and: 1. Elijah, born in Dedham, Aug. 5, 1742, died in New Marblehead, Oct. 24, 1744. Two more children were born here, as follows. 2. Eunice, born Apr. 28, 1747, baptized, May 3, 1747 3. Benjamin, born Mar. 19, 1753, baptized, March 25. 1753.

William, the progenitor of the Rehoboth family, came over in the ship"Bevis",
with his son William, son's wife Abigail and their children. He wasregistered
at Southampton, at the time of emigration as a carpenter by trade and ascoming
from Wherwell, but it is evident that he was a resident of London. Itappears
that all the family were dissenters and consequently obliged to leave thecity
of Londong for a more quiet place. It is a well-known fact that Williamwho
came to America in 1638 returned to England, leaving his son William withhis
wife Abigail and their children at Weymouth. His age is 33 on the 1638Bevis
ship list.
The following is extracted from the "Ancestry and descendatns of Colonel
Solomon Carpenter of Goshen, New York", Researched, Compiled and issuedby the
Carpenter Association in 1974: The Bevis Shipping list, located at theBritish
Museum in London, contains the following:
"Southampton. The List of the Names of Passengers Intended to shipthemselves,
in the bevis of Hampton of C> Tounes, Robert Batten Mr for Newengland,And thus
by vertue of the Lord Treasurers warrant of the second of May wch wasafter the
restraynt and they some Dayes gone to sea Before the Kinges MatesProclamacon

No of persons (William Carpenter) of Horwell Carpenters . . . age 62
(William Carpenter, JR.) 32

(tho. Banshott, servent .......................... 14
Endorsed: "Southton, 1638, The Cert. and list of the Passengers namesgone
for New England in the Bevis of Hampton, in May 1638.
The Bevis sailed in May of 1638 from Southapton, England with 61passengers
aboard. Among them were one WILLIAM CARPENTER of Horwell, age 62;William,
his son, age 33; his son's wife, Abigail, 32, and four grandchildren ofage 10
or under. The grandchildren's names are not mentioned in the ship'sclearance
papers. The Carpenters were also accompanied by a servent, ThomasBansholt,
age 14.
The ocean crossing in 1638 was a long journey and passengers sufferedmany
hardships within the cramped quarters of ships which were usually lessthan 50
feet in length. Sleeping facilities were less than comfortable and the
selection of food extremely limited. The incidence of disease andshipboard
death may not have been as prevalent as on some of the voyages of thepervious
18 years, but we can be certain the trip to the New World, even infavorable
weather, was not a pleasurable one for these adventuresome travelers.Their
days at sea were probably fraught with anxiety even though we know theyhad
high hopes for their future in the Colony.
It is believed the the elder William Carpenter left his son and family at
Weymouth, MA and returned to England on the Bevis.
The younger William Carpenter was admitted a freeman of Weymouth May 13,1640
and was named constable in 1641. He also served as representative ofWeymouth
in 1641 and 1643. Although records indicate William Carpenter wasadmitted as
an inhabitant of Rehoboth on March 28, 1645, it is possible he livedthere
before that date. It is certain that he served as town clerk and one ofthe
Rehoboth proprietors as early as 1644.

General Notes: Husband - Joseph Richardson
Richardson Mem. by J.A.Vinton, 1876, pg 282:
JOSEPH RICHARDSON, son of David and Mary (Hall) Richardson; born in
Newton, Mass., July 3, 1763; m. about 1782, Mary Carpenter, who was born
May 25, 1754. As she was accustomed, in old age, to relate many
incidents connected with Marblehead, it is supposed that she was born
there or in that vicinity.
He came from Newton to Standish, Me., with his father's family in 1778.
About 1785, he removed to Baldwin, Me., afew miles distant, then called
Flintstown. Of that place he was one of the first settlers. At that time,
Baldwin and the region around was almost unbroken wilderness, where the
wild animals of the forest held undisputed sway, and only the trails of
the red man conducted the infrequent traveler over the ground, along the
streams, and through the deep, dark woods. The young adventurer erected
his log cabin on the southerly slope of the Saddleback mountain, ina
rough, heavily wooded locality, though the soil was good. A few decaying
apple trees still mark the spot*
The earliest conveyance of land in Flintstown to Joseph Richardson,
that I have been able to find, is from Lewis Sabin, of Flintstown of
twenty acres, dated Sept. 22, 1789. [Cumb. Deeds, xxiii.14.]
He died in Baldwin, Feb. 21, 1836, aged 72 years, 7 months. His wife
Mary died there Sept. 23, 1846, aged 92. Her mother died in Baldwin at
the age of 96.
*Connected with the family of Joseph Richardson in some way--I have not
been able to learn how--was Eleazer Flint, one of the three men of that
name who settled in Baldwin, who were proprietors there, and from whom
that town and the adjoining town of Sebago, on Sebago Lake, received the
name of Flintstown. As Flint is a Reading name, they were probably from
Reading, Mass.

ABIGAIL RICHARDSON, eldest offspring of Joseph and Mary (Carpenter)
Richardson; b. in Standish, Me., Jan. 10, 1784; m. Benjamin McCorson,
Sept. 8, 1805.
They lived in Standish. She died there, July 24, 1848, aged 64 1/2
years.

Richardson Mem. by J.A.Vinton, 1876, pg 382-383:
DEACON JOSEPH RICHARDSON, son of Joseph and Mary (Carpenter)
Richardson; b. in Standish, Me., July 3, 1785, m., May 26, 1808,
Charlotte Thompson, b. in South Reading, Mass., now Wakefield, May 2,
1786. She was the dau. of Isaac Snow Thompson, M. D., by his wife
Charlotte Hayes. Dr. Thompson was a physician in Baldwin, Me., eldest
son of Daniel Thompson, who was killed by a British grenadier, on the
retreatof the British troops from Concord, April 19, 1775.*
Soon after birth, his parents removed with him from Standish to
Baldwin, then called Flint's town, from Eleazar Flint, one of the early
settlers, and a large proprietor of that township. Thus the scenes amid
which he was brought up were singularly wild and romantic. On a large
rock, the children used to play. One day Joseph and his sister Abigail
were near it amusing themselves, when seeing a large black bear with cubs
approaching, they supposed it a dog, and called it "Bose." The unmolested
brutes went on their way, leaving the children unharmed, to tell the
thrilling story in riper years.
In the midst of the forest was the "camp"where the family made maple
sugar. Here Joseph, while tending the kettles, employed his leisure
moments in reading and committing to memory select versesand hymns from
a fragment of a book, which together with a well-worn copy ofthe
Scriptures, constituted almost the entire family library. These hymns, so
often sung and repeated, were a source of great enjoyment to him in after
life, and their influence was not lost, perhaps is not yet lost upon his
children. In a log hut, in the corner of a large fire-place, by the light
of pitch-pine knots, he learned to cypher, on a piece of whetstone. In
thes e simple ways his education commenced, but he always took pleasure
in adding to it. Finding his way to Fryeburg Academy, he became a
successful teacher of commonschools.
His wife was an active, devoted Christian; the first person who taught a
grammar school in Baldwin, on the westerly slope of Saddleback Mountain,
where all their children were born.
He cultivated and owned a farm in that place, and was respected and
honored by all. He was deacon of the Congregational Church in Baldwin and
Sebago from its organization, in 1821, till his death. This church has
always been small. He, and especially his wife, took a lively interest in
its welfare. He was one of the original trustees of ministerial and
school funds till his death. He was clerk of said boards for several
years; selectman, assessor, and superintending school committee-man at
various times; justice of the peace, etc.
Many conveyances of land by him are on record in the Cumberland
Registry of Deeds. The last is dated 1843, two parcels of land,
respectively of sixty and fifty acres, both in Baldwin on Saco River, to
Ephraim Flint, of Baldwin, formerly Flint's town. [Cumb. Deeds,
cccxxxi.109.]
About the year 1832, he changed his residence to a more easterly part
of Baldwin, where he died, Sept. 21, 1848, aged 63. Charlotte, his wife,
died there Feb. 26, 1843, in he fifty-seventh year.
*Daniel Thompson was thehusband of Phebe Snow, dau. of Phebe Richardson
(Stephen, Joseph, Samuel), see page 219 & 220.

Rehoboth proprietors as early as 1644.

all info on this family from correspondence w/Helen Carpenter Burns 1990
Among the first settlers of Rehoboth were 58 people from Weymouth who drew
lots in the division of lands on June 31, 1644: William Carpenter's namein
that division stands as number 10. At the first meeting of theproprietors of
Rehoboth, held at Weymouth in 1643/4 to organize the settlement of theland
which had been originally pruchased from teh Wampanoags in 1641 by men ofthe
Plymouth Colony, the group chose nine "townsmen" to run their affairs. The
company at Weymouth, led by the Rev. Samuel Newman, did not adhere toeither
the Massachusetts Bay Colony or the Plymouth Colony at first, preferringto
consider itself an independent settlement. . . . however in 1644 the
majority decided to join Plymouth Colony, soon after an election oftownsmen
was held. . .
Tradition, as well as the description given in his will, indicates the
WIlliam Carpenter residence was located in the "ring" directly east ofthe
church. In 1645 William Carpenter was elected a Rehoboth representativeto the
governmental body at Plymouth, also chosen to look after the interest ofthe
town and named as one of those empowered to hear and decide ongtrievances in
regard to the division of land by lots. In 1647 and 1655 he was chosenas one
of the directors of the town . . .
His vocation was given on the shipping list as that of carpenter, but one
wonders if he had not at one time planned to enter the ministry. Hislibrary,
mentioned in his will, includes various religious works of the eras aswelll as
Latin classics, Greek and Hebrew grammars, biblical concordances and somelegal
works. These books, plus the fine script in which he wrote the earlyRehoboth
records, indicate he had a far better education than most of the earlyNew
England settlers.
All of William Carpenter's children are mentioned in his will, which isdated
the 10th day of the 10th month, 1658. (A copy of the will is on filewith
Plymouth Old Colony records, --wills, Vol 2, pages 80-83, in Plymouth,MA)
William died at Rehoboth Feb 7, 1658/59 and his will was proved April 21,1659.
His widow, Abigail, died at Rehoboth February 22, 1687/88. The maidenname
of William's wife, Abigail, has never been confirmed by documentation. It is
generally believed, however, that she was the daughter of WIlliam Bennettof
Sway in Hampshire. William Bennett's will, made in 1630 and provenshortly
after his Aug 20, 1638 burial, names as executors Ralph and WilliamCarpenter,
but only Ralph served as an executor.
"Wm Carpenter of Rehoboth, MAS came to America on the ship BEVIS whichsalied
in May of 1638 from Southampton, Hampshire, England with 61 passengersaboard.
Accompanying him was his father William of Wherwell, Hampshire, age 62,wife
Abigail 32y and 4 ch under 10y. They were also accompanied by a servant,
Thomas BANSHOTT 14y. Complete passenger list is given in Charles E.Banks'
THE PLANTERS OF THE COMMONWEALTH, 1620-1640, (Baltimore MD 1961) pp198-200.
It is believed the elder William left his son and family at Weymouth, MAand
returned to England on the BEVIS. The younger WM was admitted a freemanof Wey
mouth on 13 MAy 1640 and was named Constable in 1641. He served as a
Representative of Weymouth to the General Court of Plymouth, MA BayColony in
1641 and 43." From Raymond G. Carpenter's update PART 4 THE EARLYREHOBOTH, MA
