Robert came to America with his brother Caleb, on the sh i p 'Elizabeth
Ann', commanded by CPT. Roger Cooper which sailed from Lon d on May 9,
1635. On this shipping record is listed: 'Caleb Carr, ag e d 19; and Rob er t
Carr, aged 21, described as a 'tayler', sailed for New Eng l and, on 9 th o f
May, 1635,on the Elizabeth Ann'. Both brothers were mino r s who were sent
to America after the death of their parents to live with t h eir uncle
William, who had previously settled in Bristol, R.I. A f e w years later
the two brothers settled in Newport, R.I.They were both fr e emen of
Newport (Records of National Society of Colonial Dames o f A merica, Rhode

16, 1641. He was one of the original purchasers of the isl a nd of
Conanicut (now known as Jamestown) in Narragansett Bay,o f t he Indians,
which contained property in Newport. Both Robert and Cal e b were close
associates of William Coddington who came from Boston, Lin c lonshire,
England, as one of the original members of the Mass. Bay C o mpany in 1629
and was a leadinf mrchant in Boston, Mass. during this per i od. Early in
1637, a group of people led by William Coddington left Bos t on because of
religious differnces. They went to Providence and conferr e d with Roger
Williams as to settling in those parts. With the activw a i d of Mr.
Williams, the group purchased from the Indians the large i s sland of
Aquidnick and immediately founded the town of Pacassit (la t er called
Portsmouth). In 1639, William Coddington and a small gro u p of leadi ng me n

General Notes: Husband - George Carr

[jeredgardner.ged]

Arrived in New England in 1632 and settled in Ipswich. Some sources state George arrived on the Mayflower, this has proven to be untrue based on a hoax in the 1800's. George was granted an island in the Merrimac River for home and business purposes called "Carr's Island". The island was located in Cloechester (Salisbury), Massachusetts and was home to the Carr's for a number of generations. Owning the island gave the Carr's a monopoly on the ferry business across the river. The large house on Carr's Island was destroyed by fire ion May 9, 1797. Two of the family were drowned while attending to the ferry.

General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Oliver

[jeredgardner.ged]

Often presumed to be daughter of Thomas Oliver of Boston, although not named in his will. Recent article on Oliver shows she is most likely Elizabeth Dexter [NEHGR 157 (2003): 34 The English Origins of Thomas Oliver of Boston]

She is not attributed to Thomas Dexter in Grt Migration Begins.

associates of William Coddington who came from Boston, Lin c lonshire,
England, as one of the original members of the Mass. Bay C o mpany in 1629

General Notes: Child - George Carr
