CR101 show Captain Benjamin Hathaway & Elizabeth, who is believed to have been his 2nd Wife, were parents of a Daughter Abigail, Baptized 6 Oct 1746. Benjamin d. 21 Apr 1762, age 63, and Elizabeth d. 16 Dec 1776, age 67. His Will dated 12 Feb 1762 names 13 children i.e., Rebecca, Thankful, Abigail, Kezia, John, Benoni, Joseph, Eleazer, Gershom, Benjamin, Jonathan, Clemens, and Job. Based on other entries at CR101-104 Thankful, Benoni, Joseph, Eleazer, Gershom, Benjamin, and Jonathan would have been children of Captain Benjamin Hathaway & his 1st Wife, whose name was not recorded."

General Notes: Husband - Charles Russell Hathaway
Charles served in Civil War and in the Indian War, listed in Co. F, 7th Ia. Regt. He sold his land in Malone, New York Feb. 24, 1863 and moved to Douglas, Fayette Co., Iowa before September 22,1864 when his son, Charles Willis, was born.
Charles died when he undertook to cross the Turkey River above the dam at Douglas when water was high; the current was so strong it took them over the dam and drowned him as well as Mrs. Elizabeth Lame, her 15 yr. old daughter and 15 month old babe.

"Much has been written about him, Tory, called "Dare Devil", ref. Sabine's "Biog. Sketches of Loyalists of Amer. Revolution", vol. 1, p. 525. Mather's "Refugees of1776 from Long Island to Connecticut, pp. 1066-7", 8 June 1781, Ebenezer prisoner in Cimberry Mines, imprisoned with crew, ---Capt. of Adventure, captured 7 April 1781. His brother Gilbert took care of his family during the war, and after the war he settled in Burton. An interesting letter, torn by his granddaughter in trying to get it loose to copy the back of it, ....had been attached to inside of a trunk.... from him to his wife, Mary, dated "January 1783 on board the Sloop Industry", expressed his deep disappointment in not seeing her at Martha's Vineyard..he had waited two weeks hoping she would be there....he had not seen her for some six years...."

JAY - Felice Beaulieu, 90, of Jay died Saturday morning, Dec. 5,1998, at h
er home.
She was bornin Wilton, May 13, 1908, a daughter of Elmer andGrace Webst
er Hathaway, and received her education in Wiltonschools. She worked for s
everal years at Wilton Woolen Co. andlater at G. H. Bass in Wilton, whe
re she retired in 1973. Sheenjoyed sewing, cooking, and gardening.
She is survived by two sons, Wallace and Maynard Williams bothof Jay; a da
ughter, Nelda Neil of Wilton; one brother, ThronaldHathaway of Wilton; fi
ve step-children, Alfred, Regis, Donna,Clarice and Evelyn; nine grandchild
ren and 10great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Robert; a sister, Doris Greenleaf;and her hu
sband, Leon Beaulieu, who died Aug. 16, 1998.
Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday at1 p.m., atLakeview Ceme
tery in Wilton with Rev Roland Batchelder,officiating.
Felice and Leon never "officially" married, according to my family member
s, but being that they were together for so long, they technically are con
sidered to be married by common law. They were together from approximate
ly 1952 until their deaths.

"The Hathaway home at Hathaway's corners is probably one of the oldest houses in the town of Farmington and in Ontario County. Isaac Hathaway, 34 years old and a veteran of the American Revolution was attracted by the low rates offered by the Phelps and Gorham land office in Canandaigua. He and his wife Jemima left Adams, Massachusetts in the spring of 1790, she riding horseback. Along the way he had cut a poplar sprig to use as a riding whip and when she arrived in Farmington, she chose the spot for the home, in the mile square lot Isaac had purchased, and planted the stripling, the resulting lofty poplar surviving until 1920. Hers was one of the first deaths in Farmington (in 1793) and about a year later
Isaac married Elizabeth Richmond, and it was to their son that this homestead passed. Isaac was the first town clerk, performed the first marriage, was a member of the constitution committee which drew up the first code laws for Ontario County. He gave 53 hours of labor and a barrel of hand-wrought nails toward the Friends church."

General Notes: Child - Perez Hathaway
"In 1816, Perez Hathaway came to full management of the estate. His wife was second cousin of Susan B. Anthony, the militant women's rights advocate; she being a quest in the Hathaway home several times during her lifetime. The house has not changed fundamentally during the occupancy of the succeeding generations of Hathaways living there. The rear section goes back to the pioneer era and still stands sturdily. A fine cherry stairway leads to the second floor. The old cheese room next to the kitchen has been renovated. The large brick bake oven in the cellar can still be seen. The modern highway passing by the house was once a stage route and the coaches always halted at Hathaway's Corners. Perez was born July 12, 1805 in Farmington, he died January 25, 1854. On March 7, 1827 he married Hannah Lapham, born February 20, 1799 and died in 1884. She was the youngest daughter of David Lapham of Farmington.
Perez Hathaway's children were Elizabeth Canterbury, born July 14, 1829, died July 17, 1840; Joseph Perez, born August 31, 1833; Ann Maria Victoria, born November 12, 1838, died August 11, 1914, married January 5, 1860 George Collins, son of Guy and Marie (Ellis) Collins, born E. Bloomfield, N.Y., June 20, 1833, died April 17, 1903; Rebecca J., born August 13, 1843, died September 8, 1873.
Jared Perez Hathaway was the grandson of Joseph Perez Hathaway. He was born at Hathaway's Corners, Farmington, on December 19, 1897. He resided on the Canandaigua-Rochester Highway in the homestead and was a lovestock [sic] dealer. His grandchildren are the seventh generation to enjoy the homestead. He married Ethel Louise Sterling, daughter of Lyman Henry and Mary Amelia (Hutchinson) Sterling on November 11, 1915. She was born August 15, 1895. They served as airplane spotters during WWII. Their daughter is Virginia Lee, born private, married October 2, 1941 to Wilfred Stanton Stewart, son of Dr. John Stewart. She was active in Republican affairs in East Aurora. Her second husband was George R. Lefler. Her son, Bruce Hathaway Stewart is a commercial airline pilot. He married Aileen Abe and has a daughter, Lisa. He was a "blacksmith in Freetown, representative to General Court in 1775, and very active in that body. On May 31,1777 Freetown chose him as agent to bring to trial...(28 names which included Jael, William, Silas 2nd, and other relatives)" Ref. E. W. Pierce Contributions, p. 73.
On Aug. 27, 1777, he bought (Worcester 76-159) 70 acres in Sutton, and with his son built the old red house. He served as Major in the Revolution under Col. Edward Pope. Deed dated 21 Feb. 1784 in which Joshua of Sutton conveys land in Freetown, he mentions his grandfather, Jacob. Jacob's will mentions his father, John, and grandson, Joshua, eldest son of his son, Isaac, dec. (A. B. P. Transcript 7235)

His will dated 5/23/1723 bequeathed half the iron works to his son Jacob and the other half to son Isaac. Will was probated 6/11/1730. Selectman 12 years John Hathaway and Shadrack Wilbore witnessed Walter Deane's will, 1716 (American Gen. Volo. 23, p. 176). "History of Dighton", 1962, p. 148ff, states that John Hathaway and Thomas Coram chose the spot on the west side of the river for their shipyard as early as 1693, built houses side by side; after ten year's Coram returned to England and left Hathaway with business.....law suit involved two completed ships, one fully rigged and ready for the sea. Lic, innkeeper 5 June 1684. John and Hannah sold land 5 Feb 1695/6. Second wife, Christian (probably Maxfield) signed with him the deed to Jacob dated 24 June 1726 (Taunton 17-88). The order of births of his children is uncertain but all were probably born in Freetown.

General Notes: Husband - John Nicholas Hathaway
Lived in "The Farms", then part of Taunton, and now part of Berkley, MA. Ensign John served as Deputy to the Plymouth Colony General Court 1680-1684 and 1691, and to the General Court of MA in 1696-1697. He was constable in 1676 and 1691, a frequent juror, an attorney of record, and co-founder of the Chartley Iron Works of Norton.

"In 1680 he was elected a deputy to Plymouth General Court, & served for 5 successive years; & in 1681 he was chosen one of the 'selectmen to order town affairs,' in which capacity he served 4 years."
"In 1687 he was recorded as giving 10 acres of land in part payment for the support of the minister, Rev. Samuel Dansforth."
His home was in that part of Berkley known as "The Farms." The House was situated towards the North. The land 'abuts' the Great River. This is designated by an iron tablet erected there in 1889, by the Old Colony Historical Society."

"A Plaque is on the east side of the road at between 768 and 772 Berkeley St. just South of Swing St in the SW part of SW Berkeley, MA known as "The Farms". It reads "Homestead of John Hathaway 1658-1705". Erected there in 1889, by the Old Colony Historical Society.
The property there is owned by Joseph Hathaway of Dighton and his daughter Anne's house is just south of the plaque."
General Notes: Child - John Hathaway
His will dated 5/23/1723 bequeathed half the iron works to his son Jacob and the other half to son Isaac. Will was probated 6/11/1730. Selectman 12 years John Hathaway and Shadrack Wilbore witnessed Walter Deane's will, 1716 (American Gen. Volo. 23, p. 176). "History of Dighton", 1962, p. 148ff, states that John Hathaway and Thomas Coram chose the spot on the west side of the river for their shipyard as early as 1693, built houses side by side; after ten year's Coram returned to England and left Hathaway with business.....law suit involved two completed ships, one fully rigged and ready for the sea. Lic, innkeeper 5 June 1684. John and Hannah sold land 5 Feb 1695/6. Second wife, Christian (probably Maxfield) signed with him the deed to Jacob dated 24 June 1726 (Taunton 17-88). The order of births of his children is uncertain but all were probably born in Freetown.

Abraham was a blacksmith, ferryman across Taunton River, Deacon of South Congregational Church (now Unitarian Church, Dighton; for 35 years served as Town Clerk of Taunton. He was Town Clerk for 35 years.
As a soldier in King Phillip's War served in Capt. Daniel Henchman's Co., July attack on Mt. Hope, the following year under Capt. Sam Wadsworth.

Ephraim was among the first town officers of Dighton, influential in establishing the first school, among those who established the first church in 1708; operated the first ferry boat for crossing the river to attend church. He was a "blacksmith in Freetown, representative to General Court in 1775, and very active in that body. On May 31,1777 Freetown chose him as agent to bring to trial...(28 names which included Jael, William, Silas 2nd, and other relatives)" Ref. E. W. Pierce Contributions, p. 73.
On Aug. 27, 1777, he bought (Worcester 76-159) 70 acres in Sutton, and with his son built the old red house. He served as Major in the Revolution under Col. Edward Pope. Deed dated 21 Feb. 1784 in which Joshua of Sutton conveys land in Freetown, he mentions his grandfather, Jacob. Jacob's will mentions his father, John, and grandson, Joshua, eldest son of his son, Isaac, dec. (A. B. P. Transcript 7235)

"In 1816, Perez Hathaway came to full management of the estate. His wife was second cousin of Susan B. Anthony, the militant women's rights advocate; she being a quest in the Hathaway home several times during her lifetime. The house has not changed fundamentally during the occupancy of the succeeding generations of Hathaways living there. The rear section goes back to the pioneer era and still stands sturdily. A fine cherry stairway leads to the second floor. The old cheese room next to the kitchen has been renovated. The large brick bake oven in the cellar can still be seen. The modern highway passing by the house was once a stage route and the coaches always halted at Hathaway's Corners. Perez was born July 12, 1805 in Farmington, he died January 25, 1854. On March 7, 1827 he married Hannah Lapham, born February 20, 1799 and died in 1884. She was the youngest daughter of David Lapham of Farmington.
Perez Hathaway's children were Elizabeth Canterbury, born July 14, 1829, died July 17, 1840; Joseph Perez, born August 31, 1833; Ann Maria Victoria, born November 12, 1838, died August 11, 1914, married January 5, 1860 George Collins, son of Guy and Marie (Ellis) Collins, born E. Bloomfield, N.Y., June 20, 1833, died April 17, 1903; Rebecca J., born August 13, 1843, died September 8, 1873.
Jared Perez Hathaway was the grandson of Joseph Perez Hathaway. He was born at Hathaway's Corners, Farmington, on December 19, 1897. He resided on the Canandaigua-Rochester Highway in the homestead and was a lovestock [sic] dealer. His grandchildren are the seventh generation to enjoy the homestead. He married Ethel Louise Sterling, daughter of Lyman Henry and Mary Amelia (Hutchinson) Sterling on November 11, 1915. She was born August 15, 1895. They served as airplane spotters during WWII. Their daughter is Virginia Lee, born private, married October 2, 1941 to Wilfred Stanton Stewart, son of Dr. John Stewart. She was active in Republican affairs in East Aurora. Her second husband was George R. Lefler. Her son, Bruce Hathaway Stewart is a commercial airline pilot. He married Aileen Abe and has a daughter, Lisa. Gail Stewart married Charles Daugherty and they have a daughter, Tamara. Kathleen Stewart married Douglas Crank and is a teacher. The Stewart lineage is the last remaining direct line to Mary, Queen of Scots."
