2 M Abraham Wellman
Born: - Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts Baptized: Died: Buried:
General Notes: Husband - Thomas Wellman
Thomas Wellman was born about 1620, probably in Ilminster, Somerset, Engla nd, and immigrated to Lynn, Massachusetts sometime between 1640 and 164 4. There have been some claims that Thomas Wellman arrived in 1640 on t he ship Hopewell, though there are no records to substantiate thi s. In my opinion this claim is very questionable, as the Hopewell "broug ht passengers this year destined for Connecticut", and Thomas settled in L ynn, Massachusetts. It is more likely that Thomas came in 1643 or very ear ly in 1644. A list of names of Englishmen who sided with Parliament in t he English Civil War in the parish of Cerne Abbas, Dorset County (1641-164 2), contained both a Thomas Wellman and John Knight. Dorset County adjoi ns the south side of Somerset County, and the parish of Cerne Abbas is abo ut fifteen miles southeast from Crewkerne in Somerset. It appears that Tho mas was in England, fighting at the side of his future brother-in-law duri ng this conflict. However, Thomas was among a list of twenty-seven famili es that appeared in Lynn in 1644.
He married Elizabeth, whose family surname is unknown, no later than 164 2, as their first child, Abraham, was born in 1643. It seems likely that t heir marriage took place in England, and perhaps that is also where Abrah am was born.
The earliest record of Thomas Wellman in Lynn, Massachusetts is a land de ed dated Dec 12, 1653 in which Thomas and John Knights purchased two six ty acre tracts jointly. This was virgin land which bounded on the nor th by land already owned by Thomas, They cleared and farmed this newly pur chased land togeather until Thomas bought out John's interest on June 1 0, 1662. Thomas and his Elizabeth built their home on this land, on the ea st side of the 1659 road that linked Salem to Reading near Gerry's mill.
One account, written in the twentieth century says: "Leaving the Lynnfie ld Center Rail Station by the way of Summer Street, about a mile distan t, near the junction of Summer and Walnut Street stood the ancient Wellm an House ... built @ 1653 ... on the western slope of the hill near the el ms. The bounds of the ancient structure can be plainly seen, and it appea rs as if additions to the house had been made at different times. The stai rs leading to the cellars, whech were separately constructed, were of ston e; and at the front lies the doorstone ... Not far from the house was t he old well and the ancient flower garden. Still farther away is an excell ent spring of water, which was named for Robert Bates ... One of the reli cs of this family is a cup which belonged to the first Thomas. There is al so a razor hone of sea wood; a panelled chest brought over in 1640; a nd a child's chair, an elaborate piece of work made from the native hard w ood."
There is a tradition that Thomas had a sister, Emma, who married one Jo hn Knight about 1644/45, who after immigrated with his family to Lynn, Mas sachusetts, taking his new bride with him. John's father, William Knigh t, had immigrated with his family to Lynn, Massachusetts, ca. 1634/36, a nd John had returned to England to fight in the Civil war there about 1642 .
Thomas and his wife Elizabeth were religious people who were members of t he First Congregational Church in Reading (Wakefield), Massachusetts. T he church records od December 25, 1662 record that "Goodman Wellman and h is wife" were admitted to the membership at that time.
Elizabeth died after March 22, 1672/73, the day that the heirs of Thomas s igned their agreement. Thomas died at Lynn End (Lynnfield, Massachusett s) on October 10, 1672.
The dissolution of Thomas' estate and its inventory agreed to by his hei rs was dated 2 May 1673. Son Abraham received half the land and the hou se after his mother's death or remarriage; son Isaac received half the la nd to be shared with his mother (the widow) until her death or remarriag e; the widow got the barn; the three daughters got 30 pounds each, payab le in cattle and household goods. Items of interest from the inventory a re the absence of any cash as well as highly valued bibles and books.

1 F Hannah Adams
Born: - Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts Baptized: Died: Buried:Spouse: Isaac Wellman Marr: Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts
General Notes: Husband - Richard Adams
Richard Adams, his (first) wife Mary and daughter Mary came on an "unkno wn vessel that left the port of Weymouth, Dorsetshire, in March of (sic: 1 635) with about twenty-six families and servants under the direction of Re verend Joseph Hull, gathered largely from the parishes of Batcombe and Bro adway in Somersetshire. The ship arrived May 5, and practically all of t he passengers went to the plantation at Wessaguscus by permission of the G eneral Court which officially changed the name of the settlement to Weymou th in July". (Planters of The Commonwealth, Banks, P125). Richard and Ma ry are listed as servants, with the family of William and Susan Read of Ba tcombe. Ages are listed as 29 and 26 years, respectively, and their daught er Mary is shown as 1 year.
Richard was made a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony on Sept. 2, 16 35, and had seven lots granted to him in Weymouth between 1635 and 164 4. He probably came from Dorsetshire or Somersetshire, and may have sail ed as a servant to disguise his identity.
He was elected a Deputy for Weymouth to the Great and General Court whi ch was held at Newtowne (Cambridge), 2 Nov. 1637, and again 12 Mar. 1637-3 8.
He, or his family, was somehow related to John Bibbell (Bibble) of Bost on and Malden, who made his will at Hull, 21 July 1653, by which Adams, h is wife and five children each received twelve pence apiece.
He was a planter and removed to Malden before 10 Apr. 1649. Mary died in N ovember, 1656, and Richard remarried to Elizabeth.

Aaron Knap(p) was possibly from Yorkshire England. His ancestry is unknow n, but he most likely arrived in America about 1638. Aaron was able to be ar arms in 1643 for which he received an allottment of land at Taunton, Ma ssachusetts where he then lived.
Aaron took the Oath of Fidelity in 1657. He was made Freeman Jun 7, 165 9. He was on the jury to investigate the death of James Wyatt, Jul 5, 16 64 and was one of thirteen persons to view the body of Thomas Bradley, fou nd dead on the highway on July 24, 1653. A History of Taunton, Massachu setts by Samuel Hopkins Emory, D.D. published in 1898 states that Aaron w as in the 1st Train Band at Plymouth in 1622, but this is not likely, sin ce he and his son Aaron were listed with the "Second Plymouth Colony" of 1 638.
Aaron received his division of land Dec 28, 1659 - "Aaron Knap, poun ds 0, shillings 7, pence 9, 2 heads 32 acres." These lands had been previo usly granted by the Court, June 6, 1659, to those to whom the North Purcha se had been granted. A deed was appointed to be recorded, dated Aug 27, 16 66, between Aaron Knapp, of Taunton, and John Eedey, of Plymouth. In Aug.1 689 Aaron's name appears in the Confirmation Grant of William Bradford, ei ther as a Proprietor of Taunton, Cohannet, or its Northern Purchase, Asson et Neck.
Aaron Knap was a Constable in 1673 (See Boston Transcript, Dec 1, 1932 f or Cobb-Knapp-Hoskins records).
General Notes: Child - Moses Knapp
Served under Capt. Mosely at Mt. Hope campaign in King Philip's War 7 Ju ne 1675 and under Capt. John Holbrooke fighting in Concord 24 June 1676
On July 9th 1685 Moses was charged with the murder of Richard Stephens, J r. of Taunton. He admitted the killing and threw himself on the mercy of t he court. The Court decided that the act was "casual". He was admonished a nd discharged.

"Ancient North Yarmouth and Yarmouth, Maine 1639-1936, A History", by William Hutchinson Rowe, on p.42, mentions a Nathaniel Wallis as one of several inhabitants of North Yarmouth who, in 1687-1688, was granted a land warrant by Sir Edmund Andros, Governor of Massachusetts. I have not yet ascertained how, or even if, Nathaniel was related to Josiah.

General Notes: Husband - Jacob Tripler
The 1850 Philadelphia census lists a Jacob Tripler, age 25, a clerk and his wife Elizabeth, age 20 with no children. The 1857 Philadelphia Directory lists Jacob L. Tripler as a provisioner. The LDS International Geneological Index notes that a female child was born on 1 Nov. 1859 to Jacob Tripler of Camden, New Jersey and his wife Louisa. A list of Camden County, N.J. marriages includes Jacob Tripler and Louisa Horner married 2/10/1859. The1860 US census for Camden, NJ lists Jacob, a provision dealer age 37 and Louisa, age 22 and their children Elizabeth, age 6 and Margarite, age 6 months . If these two are the same Jacob Tripler then the birth dates disagree by about two years. Elizabeth may have been his first wife and the mother of the child Elizabeth. Louisa was rather young to be Elizabeth's mother. This speculation is reflected in the family data recorded here. The 1880 US census shows Jacob Tripler, age 53, living in Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania with his wife Louisa,41 and his children Margaretta C.,19 and Louisa,9. In the same household that year was Jacob's brother in law, Mathias Horner, 26 and his nephew Edwin C. Horner, 4. The 1900 US census has Jacob Tripler, born September 1823 living in Landsdown, Delaware County, Pennsylvania with his wife Louisa, born May 1840 and his daughter Margaretta C., born July 1865.
General Notes: Child - Elizabeth Tripler
In the 1860 census the Jacob Tripler family is recorded in Camden, New Jersey. Elizabeth's age is given as 6 years He r birth place is listed as Pennsylvania. She is not listed with the family in the 1880 census.

General Notes: Husband - Jonathan Wainwright
Jonathan was baptised in the Presbyterian Church in 1730 but was later known to be a Quaker. His profession was hatter . In a letter dated 7/26/1902 to his cousin who is not clearly identified Chandler P. Wainwright states that Jonathan was a Captain of the city guard in 1777 citing the Book of Pennsylvania's Line Malitia. In History of Philadelphia De partment of City Government Pg. 625 it is stated that Capt. Jonathan Wainwright was mustered out (the words mustered out are hard to read in the second hand account I saw and are guessed at here) Nov. 12 1777. The name of the Colonel of his battalion is mentioned but I can't read it. The book itself should be consulted. T.E.W. Philadelphia was occupied by the British Army September 1777 to June 1778.
General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth
Elizabeth's first child was born the year after her marriage but the others came after a lapse of nearly twenty years . Could there have been a second wife for Jonathan?
Baptism Notes: Child - Jonathan Wainwright
1st Presb. Ch., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
General Notes: Child - William Wainwright
The marriage register of Swedes Church Philadelphia lists a William Wainwright as marrying Sarah Opligrove 15 April 179 3. It is here assumed without proof that the William concerned is the son of Jonathan and Elizabeth. In paper titled "Philadelphia and Her Merchants" by Abraham Ritter dated 1860 it is stated that Isaac's brother William "was the persecuted President of the Commercial Bank: for upon investigation he was honorably acquitted." Nicholas Wainwright in a letter to his brother Alexander dated 4/15/1983 states that Isaac's brother William was a Quaker of the Pine and Orange St . meeting who married one Sarah who died at the age of 44 in 1799.
General Notes: Child - Isaac Wainwright
There follows two exerpts from the book, "Philadelphia and Her Merchants," published in 1860 by the author, Abraham Ritter.
Chapter XIII Water Street, Arch to Race
---------No. 57, in 1793, and adjoins the industrial block and pump-maker depot of Isaac Wainwright. These premises run through to the wharf and the water itself, for at the foot of his yard there was a dock for the soaking and safe keeping of logs, a very sink of mortality to those who ventured to run their role from wharf to wharf, a memorable fact to your author, who, but for the timely hand of a larger boy, and the extra capillary of his head, would certainly not have been here now to tell a tale of days and things lang syne. Humbly, but vastly important to maritime requirements, the saw, the auger, and the chisel noised their daily services to shape and bore a pump, or fit a sheeve and block to the hand of a inquiring mariner. Mr. Wainwright was perhaps the most popular block and pump maker of his day. His son Jonathan succeeded him in the business, and continued it for many years. Thence he removed to Kensington, and establishe DA saw-mill and board yard, and at the same time acting as President of the Kensington Bank. He resigned the presidency creditable to his services, and retired to his more active business calling, which with his sons, he yet industriously pursues. In this connection I take occasion to state that his brother William was the persecuted President of the Com mercial Bank: for upon investigation he was honorably acquitted. Isaac Wainwright, the sire, died in July, 1844, in his eighty-third year.
Chapter XIX Front Street, east side Race to Arch
Passing a boarding-house and the shoemaker shop of Richard Miles of No. 72, we came to a nest of frames of two stories -----------. Isaac Wainwright bounds these frames by a very respectable three-story brick; it was of modern appearance and character in 1800, and from the steps down the best and handsomest house. Mr Wainwright was a respectable member of the Society of Friends; a good citizen and estimable neighbor.
The Wainwrigfhts came to America from England two years after William Penn.

General Notes: Husband - Henry Lisle
Henry was given a lot in Philadelphia according to the will of his grandfather Henry Badcock. The wording of the will seems to indicate that he was not yet of age in 1734. In the same will he is listed as the third child of his parents after Mary and Elizabeth and before Hannah. ( I assume here that the listing is in order of birth.) Remembering that Elizabeth is the second of that name, the first Elizabeth having died in 1714, and also assuming that Hannah was born before the death of her father in 1722, I estimate that Henry was born between 1715 and 1721. Records of the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of Quakers dated 3/31/1751 state that Henry Lisle was "condemed" for marrying "contrary to discipline" . On 3/30/1770 Henry Lisle (perhaps the same man) was "disowned" due to "disunity". Children of a Henry Lisle and his wife Elizabeth are also noted in the Quaker records. If this is the same Henry then he still had some standing with the Quakers after he was condemed. The children are: Mary born 12/9/1752 at noon; Maurice born 12/10/1752 6AM; Nathaniel#1 born 8/8/1754; Nathaniel#2 born 3/9/1757 died 7/24/1758; There is also mention of a Henry Lisle who died 12/1/1764 at the age of four years and an "Ann Lysle, daughter of Henry" who died 12/28/1765 at the age of four months. In his will dated 1/13 1792 he mentions sons Maurice and Henry and daughters Mary, Margaret and Elizabeth, the latter not yet of age. His wife is not mentioned and was presumably already dead. His will reads as follows : I Henry Lisle of the City of Philadelphia in the State of Pennsylvania, Mariner being of sound mind & memory mindful l of mortality and the uncertainty of time here make this my last will and testament. First I give & bequeath to my son Maurice Lisle now of the island of Tortola twenty pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania to be allowed or paid out of the money that may be due to me from him by my books at the time of my death but if it shall appear that he does not owe me any money on acount at that time then the above sum of twenty pounds money aforsaid shall be paid to him the said Maurice Lisle or his order by my executor(s) within twelve months after my last will shall be proved if demanded but if the above sum of twenty pounds is not demanded within the time mentioned above it shall go to his sisters, Mary, Margerett & Elizabeth LIsle & secondly I give unto my grandson Henry Maurice Lisle all the debt due me in the West Indies that is to say from the estate of William Rogers late of St. Eustatius deceased being about one hundred & ninety pounds Pennsylvania currency & from sundry persons in St. Crois & from his father Maurice Lisle (except the twenty pounds above) & others of the island of Tortola but if there should be no money due to me at any of the above places then I give to my said grandson Henry Maurice Lisle one hundred pounds money aforesaid to be paid to him by my executors when h e shall arrive at the age of twenty one years but in case of his death before that time then the above sum of one hundred pounds is to remain for their use to whome I may give the residuary of my estate thirdly I give to my son Henry Lisle all the money he may owe to me at the time of my decease agreable to my books and to his son Charles Palmer Lisle twenty pounds money of Pennsylvania to be paid to him or his order when he shall arrive at the age of twenty one years if demanded otherwise to go to the first son of either of my three daughters but in case of failure of male issue then to go to my eldest daughter Mary Lisle or her heirs And lastly after all my just debts are paid the residue & remainde r of my estate both real and personal of every kind I give and bequeath to my three daughters Mary, Margerett & Elizabeth Lisle their heirs and asignes share and share alike to be divided when my daughter Elizabeth shall come to the age of twenty one or mary but if before that time either of my said three daughters shall die the whole estate shall be divided share and share alike between the remaining two. And I do hereby nominate & appoint my said three daughters with my friend William Turner my executors & untill my daughter Elizabeth shall arrive at the age of twenty one years or mary as aforsaid the rents ---- and profitts of my real estate shall be equally divided between my said three daughters for their respective uses. In witnes whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seal this thirtieth of January One Thousand Seven Hundred & Ninety Two.HENRY LISLE
Signed sealed and delivered in the presence of us, RICHARD F. SPARKS HENRY SPARKS Jun.
Henry Sparks was the surviving witness when the will presented for probate June 16 1807.
Henry was a Quaker and quite a bit about the amily in the Quaker records. His adventures as a sea captain are mentioned in the Philadelphia newspapers of the time. For instance he sank a Spanish Privateer in 1742 and he had a business at 44 Dock Street and lived at 127 S Second street. Left property in Tortola to his family.
General Notes: Child - Mary Lisle
Mary is refered to as his eldest daughter in her father's will. She was evidently unmaried in 1792 when the will was wr itten.
General Notes: Child - Maurice Lisle
Maurice Lisle is mentioned in his father's will as being on the island of Tortola in 1792.
General Notes: Child - Nathaniel Lisle
This Nathaniel evidently died as a young child since a second Nathaniel was born in March of 1757.
General Notes: Child - Henry Lisle
In his father's will Henry was given all the money that he owed to his father at the time of the latter's death.
General Notes: Child - Margaret Lisle
Margaret was evidently unmaried in 1792 at the time her father's will was written.
General Notes: Child - Elizabeth Lisle
Elizabeth was under the age of twenty one and evidently unmaried in 1792 when her father's will was written.

His household includes his wife Elizabeth, an Irish domestic, Catherine McFadden, age 29, and a 59 year old woman, Susan L. Child. The Elizabeth Tripler we have assumed to be the sister of Charles' father was married to Ezekiel Child who would have been of an age similar to Susan's. She could be his sister.

John,
Sorry I did not get back to you sooner. Charles Wyman was charged
with and plead guilty to murdering Maria Huff.
Maria died 25 Oct 1903 and I found her death cert at the LDS
library in SLC. The cause of death is "gunshot wound in head - murdered
byher husband".
Family lore claims that Dad took the rap to save a not quite with
it (mentally) son. I found articles in the Piscatiquis Observer on both
5 Nov 1903 and 3 Mar 1904. These articles were found on microfilm in the
Dover Foxcroft Library. The center of the film does not have the entire
column- it appears that the binding was too tight.
In the March article it says Mr.Wyman pleaded nolo contendere to
the charge of manslaughter. He was sentenced to five years in state
prison.
The November article had more information about the actual event
but that one is the one that is hard to read. If and when I can get some
research time in Maine I would love to find the same article from
another film and perhaps it will be of better quality.
My husband is the son of Adeline Wyman (b. 1910) who was the
daughter of Danville Ledbetter Wyman (b. 1873). He was the son of
Charles. There are two Danville Ledbetters, the other was son of Henry
(b. 1832). That Danville served in the Civil War and was born 1832. You
can find some of my information about the Wymans on ancestry.com if you
search for Charles Wyman. That is where I found you.
Please let me know how you are related so I can add your links to
my file. I can send you a gedcom file if you can use that. I would love
to know how you are related to my Jerre.
Talk to you soon.
