The children listed here by Hannah Twist was very tentative. Lilla May in her birth, marriage and death records listed a father William Banks (1 entry) and father Hiram Banks. (2 entries) William was the Banks living closest to Hannah in the 1870 and 1880 censuses, which raises suspicion. The gap between Hannah's earliest and latest children suggests a second father for the youngest children. Birth records of the other children need to be consulted. It is unclear if Hannah Twist married the father(s) of her children born after 1865. Bob Chandler indicates that Hannah's son Frank P. Banks also lists his father as Hiram in several records. Then Glenn Sampson wrote in Dec 2008:
" I have recently determined that twins George Banks and unnamed Banks b. 5 Sep 1876, Bertha E. Banks b. 31 Aug 1877, James William Banks b. 13 Jun 1879, and Frank Perce Banks were fathered by Charles H. Curtis. The three earlier postwar children had other fathers.
A full discussion of the paternity of the Banks children born after the war, corroborated by depositions by Hannah [Twist Banks], Charles Curtis and several others is contained in Jeremiah's Civil War Pension file."
*
Glenn Sampson of Windsor, Connecticut, indicates some of the descendants of William knew him as Hiram Banks, but also were aware he had a first given name of William.
*
This William may also be a slightly younger William K. Banks listed in the 1900 census of Penobscot Co. (see separate entry)

"He and his younger brother, James Leonard, were skilled workmen in iron. They emigrated to Mass., where they were connected for several years with iron works in Lynn and Braintree. In 1652, they established a furnace and forge at Taunton, Mass., now Raynham, - the first successful iron works in America. The old forge remained in constant use for more than 200 years; now nothing remains but the old trip-hammers, the dam and foundation walls. The observation, "Where you find good iron works there you will find a Leonard," has been almost literally verified in New England. Henry Leonard later removed to Monmouth Co., N.J. (about 1674), and was the first to set up iron works at Tinton Falls. He and his brother were among the original purchasers of land in Monmouth Co. The Leonard family possessed great wealth, and from generation to generation held various offices of trust, honor, and profit. In later Colonial days some of them maintained almost baronial state."

Funeral at Verona For Minister's Wife - 1943
Funeral services were held in Verona United Brethren Church Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. Susie Witham, 57, of New Madison, wife of Rev. A.C. Witham, former pastor of the Verona U.B. church and now serving the New Madison and Savona U.B. churches. The final rites were in charge of Dr. L. M. Hohn of Dayton, superintendent of the Miami conference of U.B. churches, assisted by Rev. Clarence Kimmel, Verona U.B. Pastor, and Rev. A. A. Turner, Verona Methodist pastor. Burial was in Verona cemetery.
Mrs. Witham died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, of pnuemonia which developed after she had submitted to an operation for removal of a tumor.
Rev. and Mrs. Witham resided in Verona for four years, while he was pastor of the U.B. Church in that village. They moved from Verona to New Madison two years ago, following his assignment to the pastorate of the New Madison and Savona U.B. churches.
Survivors, besides the husband, are three daughters, Mrs. Mary Louise Morris of New Madison, Mrs. Ruth Royalty of Danville, and Mrs. Mae Davis of Chicago; her mother, Mrs. Mary Hays of Coolville; six grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Hannah Brooklin of Athens, and four brothers, William and Clair of Middletown, Vernon of Coolville, and Delbert of Los Angeles

!"Ancestry of Edward Wales Blake and Clarissa Matilda Glidden with Ninety Allied Families" by Edith B. Sumner conflicts with this record.
That record lists Alice GRANTAM as first wife of John Emery . Also marriage date for the 2nd wife, Mary Shatswell is given as 29 Oct 1647 (Wiltshire Parish registers - Wilts. 4, Vol II, P.7). Marriage entry of John Emerye and Alice GRANTAM is dated 26 June 1620. Wiltshire adjoins Hampshire Parish, but entry gives no further clues.

!John Libby came to Maine as a fisherman in the employ of Robert
Trelawny, a Plymouth merchant who held a large grant of coast land at
Cape Elizabeth where, on Richmond Island, he had established an active
fishing industry. John came over on the Hercules" which brought the
family of John Winter, Trelawny's Maine manager, and many other
fishermen and servants and arrived in port at Richmond Island on 13
February 1636/7, leaving his wife in England (he sent for her to join him here about 1640.
It is suspected that John came from the area of Cornwall and that he
was born about 1614 even though in 1677 he signed a petition to the
governor and council of Massachusetts Bay stating that he was then
seventy-five years of age. It seems more likely that he exaggerated his
age in an appeal for sympathy and assistance.
In the history of Scarborough, he is said to have been "for many years
one of the town's principal planters." He was constable
in 1664 and his name stands first of the four selectmen in a town grant
bearing date 1669. In King's Phillip's war (1675) he lost
everything he had except his plantation. Captain Joshua Scattow's diary
says; "Eight of nine deserted houses belonging to Libby
and his children "were burned by the Indians 7 September, 1675."
Source: Allen Humphries - John did not "colonize" Scarborough. ME. He, and his numerous family, were very influential in the establishment of Scarborough. It wouldn't have existed without the dogged determination of the Libby's, Larrabee's, and several other families who recognized the value of the area and sacrificed a lot (including family members who gave their lives) to make it what it became. But, he didn't hold the "Patents" or "Grants" that were used for colonization.

General Notes: Husband - Abraham Rideout
From York Deeds: Vol. 8, Vol. 208: Abraham Rideout, John Hutchins, Samuel Palmer and Ben Thruston bought land from Joseph Shaw, 17 Feb 1716. Abraham Rideout of Haverhill was scrivener ("scribe" or "writer") for the County of Essex, province of ye Mass Bay Co., in New England.
The preponderance of evidence is that Abraham was buried in Haverhill however there is no record. But when you review the facts it is near certain that he is buried in the Pentucket Cemetery Haverhill MA.
Per Haverhill VRs Abraham married Jemima Davis on 14 Mar 1714 in Haverhill. Jemima's family had lived in Haverhill for generations and her G grandfather was one of its founders. When Abraham died in about 1724 it would have been up to Jemima where he was buried and the family cemetery was the Pentucket. Then 13 years later when Abrahams son Benjamin died she buried him in Pentucket, likely next to his father and his stone can be seen here.
Jemima then married Dr. James Holgate and they had six children four died from the throat distemper plague that hit Haverhill in 1737 and all are buried at Pentucket Cemetery and their tombstones all in the same area can be found at the above web site. Tombstones for Abraham, Jemima and Dr. Holgate have never been found but it would be unthinkable that Jemima Abraham and Dr Holgate were not buried with their children in the family plot. It is likely that their stones fell over as many others have in that cemetery and are now a few inches below ground level. As to Abraham's first wife Mary, Abraham would have seen to her burial so not at all sure about her.
General Notes: Child - Nicholas Rideout
Nicholas is said to have come from England in the ship "Chandler", fromKent, and settled at Back Cove, Falmouth (now Portland) , Maine.
He is said to have been a builder of ships.

General Notes: Husband - Henry Howland
Henry Howland and his two brothers, John and Arthur, were the first Howlands in America. All three were in Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, members of the band of Puritans who then removed to Holland due to religious intolerance. Brother John Howland was the first to arrive aboard the Mayflower in 1620. When Henry (and Arthur) arrived is not known, but it was likely in the period 1631-32, as Henry Howland was admitted freeman of Plymouth colony before January 1632/33. In 1636, he removed to the Duxbury section of the colony where he served in various positions, including Duxbury highway surveyor. His Quaker activities resulted in fines and censureship. "On 22 December 1657 Henry Howland, for entertaining Quaker meetings at his house, was summoned to appear at the next court. On 2 March 1657, 58, he was fined 10s. for entertaining a meeting at his house contrary to the order of the court...." On 7 June 1659, "Henry Howland of Duxburrow" as a Quaker "or manifest encourager of such" appears on a list to lose freemanship and is ordered to appear in August to be convicted and censured. At court on 6 October 1659, Henry Howland was disenfranchised for being an "abettor and entertainer of Quakers." The claim that Henry Howland's wife was Mary Newland is unsupported. The will of Henry Howland:

!See notes of father. Both the FGRA sheet and the one from Janet Pease said he was born about 1605 but 'Ancestors of Annis Spear' said abt 1609 and 'He was apprenticed to his brother Humphrey in 1623, but as there is no record of his being granted his freedom he probably did not finish his apprenticeship. He came to Plymouth Colony and settled in Duxbury where he died in 1670, leaving a widow Mary, who died 16 Jun 1674. His will, dated 28 Nov 1670, names eight children....' One source has him born in 1609. Since his parents married in 1612, this birthdate is probably wrong.
He supposedly came to Massachusetts in 1630 with Gov. John Winthrop's fleet and with his parents, but I don't find him listed on a passenger list:
http://members.aol.com/dcurtin1/gene/winthrop.htm
He probably married Sarah Ware
I have that he died in Windsor, Hartford, Ct, but I'm not sure if it was settled by then.
He may have died 14 Mar. 1655
His son, Nathaniel was killed with his captain Marshall in the great Narraganset fight, December 19th, 1675.

Richard Adams, his (first) wife Mary and daughter Mary came on an "unkno wn vessel that left the port of Weymouth, Dorsetshire, in March of (sic: 1 635) with about twenty-six families and servants under the direction of Re verend Joseph Hull, gathered largely from the parishes of Batcombe and Bro adway in Somersetshire. The ship arrived May 5, and practically all of t he passengers went to the plantation at Wessaguscus by permission of the G eneral Court which officially changed the name of the settlement to Weymou th in July". (Planters of The Commonwealth, Banks, P125). Richard and Ma ry are listed as servants, with the family of William and Susan Read of Ba tcombe. Ages are listed as 29 and 26 years, respectively, and their daught er Mary is shown as 1 year.
Richard was made a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony on Sept. 2, 16 35, and had seven lots granted to him in Weymouth between 1635 and 164 4. He probably came from Dorsetshire or Somersetshire, and may have sail ed as a servant to disguise his identity.
He was elected a Deputy for Weymouth to the Great and General Court whi ch was held at Newtowne (Cambridge), 2 Nov. 1637, and again 12 Mar. 1637-3 8.
He, or his family, was somehow related to John Bibbell (Bibble) of Bost on and Malden, who made his will at Hull, 21 July 1653, by which Adams, h is wife and five children each received twelve pence apiece.
He was a planter and removed to Malden before 10 Apr. 1649. Mary died in N ovember, 1656, and Richard remarried to Elizabeth.

The name varies: Greenway, Grenaway, Grinaway, Grinoway, Grinnoway.
John Grenaway (as he wrote it) or Greenway (as others often wrote it) and his wife arrived in New England in 1630 and were first at Dorchester. It had been thought that they came in the "Mary and John" which arrived at Nantasket, later Hull, 30 May 1630. But all known passengers on that ship were from the West Country. Recently the baptisms of four of his daughters have been discovered in Mildenhall, Wiltshire, England. This is not in the West Country, so probably Geenaway and his wife Mary, and daughters Susanna, Katherine and possibly Elizabeth came on some other ship about 1630. Daughters Mary and Ursula came on the "Elizabeth" in 1635, and daughter Ann who married Robert Pierce, almost certainly in England before 1630, probably came later also.
John was one of the 108 persons from Boston, Salem, Dorchester and elsewhere who, on 19 October 1630 desired to be made freeman. (NEHGR says he was "in Dorchester sequence"). He took the freeman's oath 18 May 1631.
His only wife of record was Mary, but the gap between the baptism of Elizabeth in 1608/1609 and Susanna's birth estimated as 1620 suggests that John may have married more than once. The Mildenhall baptismal records do not give the name of the mother.
He was granted marsh land in Dorchester about January 1632/1633.
John was one of the twenty men chosen by the town of Dorchester, 2 January 1637, to arrange the affairs of the plantation. At this meeting it was ordered "Good. Greenway shall have all the upland one the pine necke for his great lott except 4 acres belonging to Good. Binham & six Acres bought of Moses Mavericke."
John "Grenaway" signed the Dorchester petition 12 February 1641.
On 5 February 1650/1651 Greenway gave property to his daughter Ursula Greeneaway because she had been "an obedient, loving, dutiful, and faithful daughter and servant unto her aged father & mother"; if Ursula had no children, the property at her death was to go to "my kinsman & servant Thomas Millett, the son of Thomas & Mary Millett, my son-in-law and daughter," and Ursula or Thomas Millett was to make payments to "my daughter Ann Pearse & her children," to "my daughter Elizabeth Allen and her children," to "my daughter Mary Millett and her children," ato "my daughter Susanna Wales & her children if she have any," and to "my daughter Ketherine Daniell & her children." On the same date, Greenway also gave property to "Ann Pearse my daughter, now wife of the said Rob[er]t Pearse."
He had a share in the division of land in 1652.
Torrey says he died in 1664.
Mr. Grenaway was a man of good repute among his neighbors and townsmen. He was a millwright by trade. His residence was said to be near the burying place.
General Notes: Wife - Mary
In 1648 at Dorchester Mary Grenaway, wife to John Grenaway, and four of her daughters, Ann Pierce, Mary Millett, Katharine Daniel, and Susanna Wales are appended to petition from Dorchester, about 1648, in favor of a noted midwife, Alice Tilley, wife of William Tilley.
General Notes: Child - Ann Greenway
In 1648 Ann Pierce was one of those signing a petition from Dorchester in favor of noted midwife, Alice Tilley, wife of William Tilley.
In a deed dated "first day, twelfth month 1650" "John Greeneaway of dorchester in New England conveyed to daughter Ann Pearse, wife of Robert Pearse, all his land in Pine necke, Dorchester, six acres of which was purchased of Moses Mavericke, together with the meadow in the necke belonging to it, together with the Comons pertaining to the six acres before mentioned." Robert and Ann were to have the property during their lives, and at their death it was to go to their only son Thomas, or if he had died, the land to be divided equally between daughters Mary and Sarah and their heirs, or the surviver thereof. Pine Neck is situated on the Neponset River, north and east of the Old Colony Railroad. The lower part, at least, of this now compactly settled area, had been covered with a dense grove of pine trees.
Ann outlived her husband almost 31 years and died 31 December 1695, aged 104 according to the gravestone, said to be "the oldest person, prob. that ever liv. in D." Her age is probably an exaggeration.
General Notes: Child - Ursula Greenway
Ursula did not come to America with her parents, but came in 1635 with her brother-in-law Thomas Millett and his wife Mary, who was Ursula's sister. They came on the "Elizabeth," William Stagg, master, their certificate of conformity being from St. Saviors, Southwark, England, dated 12 April 1635. Ursula was then 32 years old.
On 5 February 1650 a deed from "John Greeneaway of dorchester in New England, milwright," gave to "Ursula Greeneaway, the daughter of said John Greeneaway hath always ben an obedient, loving, dutifull and faithfull daughter and servant unto her aged father & mother .. more especially in their weakeness and old age which is now Come uppon them" "all that home & parte of my dwelling howse that lyes at the southwest end of my dwelling wherein the said Ursula doth usually lye To have & to hold the said Roome and part of my said dwelling house, during the life of the said John Greeneaway and Mary Greeneaway his wife, without any lett or molestation. Unto the said Ursula, all my said dwelling howse out howse Barne garden & orchards, conteynning five acres, more or lesse, between George weekes on the west and Richard Leeds on the east and also three acres of meadow bee it more or lesse lying in the meadow called the Calves Pasture between the meadow of Thomas Jones on the south side and gerge dier on the north side, And also three acres of meadow, more or lesse, lying neere the creeke called the old harbor ... after the deaths of the said John Greeneaway and Mary Greeneaway, for ever. [If Ursula have no children, the premises after her decease, said Greeneaway gives] unto my kinsman & servant Thomas Millett, the sonne of Thomas & mary Millett my sonne in Lawe & daughter, To have and to hold, he paying tenn pounds for fower years, fourty pounds, tenn pounds pr Annum, unto my daughter Ann Pearse & hir children, thirty shillings, unto my daughter Elizabeth Allen and her children three pounds, to my daughter mary millett & hir other children thirty & five shillings, unto my daughter susanna wales & her children, if shee have any, one pound seventeen shillings & sixpence & unto my daughter katherine daniel & to her children one pound seventeen shillings & sixpence, and so yearely untill the said terme of fower yeares be expired nd the said fortie pounds be fully paid. If the said Thomas millett die before he Come to enjoy the same & have not heires of his body Then his brother John Millett or other sonne of Thomas millett the father shall have the said prmisses to him and his heires for ever, paying whatsoever Thomas millet this brother should have paid. And whereas I have expressed nothing for the heires of my daughter Ursula to pay if she have any heires I enjoine him hir or them for pay only twenty pounds in the same manner Thomas Millett should have donne if it had Come to him ..." Dated fifth day of the twelf month annoj domi 1650. Entered and Recorded 7 May 1652.
She afterwards married Hugh Batten, who was of Dorchester 1658 and died 8 June 1659. The inventory of his estate, taken 19 July 1659, amounted to L144. 04. 07. Widow Ursula deposed 26 November 1659.
In 1659, the year of her husband's death, Ursula applied to the town for "a plot of land" for a barn.
General Notes: Child - Mary Greenway
While Anderson, in "The Great Migration Begins", says Mary was "born about 1606, aged 29 in 1635" daughter of John Greenaway, and shows John's wife to be Mary, Anderson questioned whether wife Mary was the mother of all the children. Reed and Mahler, in the Millett article, give her baptismal date and call her "daughter of John and Ursula (___) Green(a)way of Dorchester, Mass." Since the baptismal record itself does not give the mother's name, we are left wondering whether this is an error, or if there is additional information which was not published in these articles.
In 1648 Mary Millett was one of those signing a petition from Dorchester in favor of noted midwife, Alice Tilley, wife of William Tilley.
Millet says she died "5 June or 27 Sept 1682 at Gloucester MA." On 26 September 1682 the heirs agreed regarding division of their parents' estate (Ipswich Court). The record includes money due Sarah, widow of John Millett, "for her own use this to be for the tending of their mother Mary Millet late deceased". On 27 September 1682 administration was granted to son Thomas.
General Notes: Child - Elizabeth Greenway
Elizabeth probably came with her parents in 1630.
Elizabeth Allen is identified as daughter of John Greenway in a deed dated 5th day, 12th month 1650 giving property to daughter Ursula Greenway.
In a deposition of 29 July 1642 "Ursula Greenoway" deposed regarding the will of John Bradley of Salem, that he said "he had nobody to give his estate but his wife, only some of his clothes & tools he gave to his brother-in-law William Allen" [Anderson cites NEHGR 2:185]. William Allen of Manchester had a second wife named Elizabeth, whom he married about 1634. Since John Greenway had a daughter Elizabeth Allen with children, Anderson argues that there was no reason for Ursula Greenway to be involved in this probate matter unless it was Elizabeth Greenway who was the second wife of William Allen.
General Notes: Child - Susannah Greenway
In 1648 Susanna Wales was one of those signing a petition from Dorchester in favor of noted midwife, Alice Tilley, wife of William Tilley.

David Giveen the ancestor of all of the name Giveen or Given in the Brunsw ick, Topsham & Harpswell vicinity. He came to Maine from Coleraine, Coun ty of Londonderry, Ireland, with his wife and three sons. In 1719 he settl ed at Mere (spelled Mair) Point, near Brunswick.
In 1730 he applied to the Pejepscot Proprietors for land on the Maquoit Ro ad, near Brunswick, and also for land for his son, David Giveen, and for h is sons-in-law, Samuel Clapp and James Campbell. In this petition David Gi ven, Senior, spelled his name as here Giveen, but many of the descendan ts spell it Given. The Pejepscot Papers state that Ancestor David Give en in 1735 purchased 300 acres of land extending from Middle Bay to the To wn Common where a stone marked G on three sides may be found. This land ex tended from Pennell land to the Old Gurnet Road. This land was purchased f or $48.00, he soon moved there.
The houses (Prince and Cushing houses taken over by the U.S. Navy) were la ter Given houses. He settled first near the shore, building four cabins, w hose foundations and some logs were still visible in 1884 by Dyer family w ho bought some of the land at that time. Also visible were two dams in t he salt water creek used for shipbuilding purposes. David was the own er of "considerable estates," was held in high esteem by the pioneer settl ers of Brunswick, and was Deacon of the old Presbyterian Church there. T he name of his wife is Mary <unknown>. This is also true of the date of h is death and that of his wife, as many of the old Giveen Records were dest royed in a fire in one of the old homesteads. Deacon David Giveen (Presbyt erian Family Bible) was born 1690 and died June 16, 1763, aged 73 years. H is wife Mary Giveen died Feb. 3, 1741, aged 66 years.
It is the opinion of many of the descendants of Ancestor David Giveen th at he came to America in Temple's celebrated Scotch Irish Colony. He sure ly was of the same sturdy and God-fearing character as the others of the T emple Colony among whom he lived at Brunswick, Maine.
David and Mary Giveen are burried in the First Parish Cemetery in Brunswic k, Maine. The First Parish was begun in 1719 and completed in 1735. It w as destroyed by fire in 1834.
The cemetery is on a rise above the new road and was at the rear or the Me eting House. It is well kept and enclosed with a chain link fence. In t he center foreground there is a huge boulder inscribed: "This boulder tak en from their old homestead is erected in the memory of William Simpson 16 91- 1771 and Agnes Lewis Simpson, 1700-1779 who came from Scotland and set tled at Simpson's Point, Brunswick Me. about 1735."
The slate stones here are carved with a crude skull at the top- some of th em very ghoulish. The carver used J. for I and also for 1 and Y. He wro te dau. TO and son TO instead of the usual OF.

Research Notes: Husband - Thomas Clark Sergt.
Sergt. Thomas father of Samuel (49), Nathaniel (42), and likely, Josiah (31) and Freeman (11). He was one of the Thomases of Ipswich, four in number. Three were made freeman, 1646, 1652, 1674. Three signed the protest in 1666 against the
treatment of the King's Commissioners in Boston, there called Sr., Jr. and 3d. These were Sergt. Thomas the tanner, Thomas the cooper, who was brother of Edward of Haverhill, and Thomas the tailor, son of Sergt Thomas, born 1638, who married
Abigail Cogswell and died 1682. Besides these three, there came to Ipswich by 1670 the fourth Thomas, called "Winnisimmett" when elected tythingman in 1679. Three of these four may have been totally unrelated. The newcomer had been in 1658-60
the ferryman and innholder at Chelsea, and apparently was "Brewer Clark" and "Corporal Clark" at Ipswich. Also the cooper was living in East Boston when his daughter married George Hiskett. His brother at Haverhill, born about 1622, and wife
Dorcas (Bosworth), by their sons Hanniel, Matthew and Joseph, had at least six grandsons who settled on the Piscataqua. Sergt. Thomas Sen. and his sons carried on the tanyard at the foot of Summer St. some 60 years. Three of his sons living on
his land there, John, Sergt. Thomas, and Freeman (11); Nathaniel (42) and Jonathan (25) lived in Newbury; and four, Samuel (49), Josiah (31), Jonathan and Freeman, were at Portsmouth. In 1682 by a sort of will he tried to arrange with Freeman
for life support of himself and wife Mary, and two years later changed to John. He died 9 Jan. 1689-90, and his wife 27 weeks later. Thomas the cooper could have made only a brief try at Boston , in 1659 he was working up clapboards in Ipswich.
His daughter married Hiskett 11 June 1662. His will at Ipswich, 23 June 1688 - inventory 14 May 1691, appears to remember all his posterity; son Josiah, widow and children of son Thomas, daughter Sarah Hiskett and his children recorded in
Boston. Thomas the tailor also tried Boston, where his son Thomas was born 7 July 1664, and Salem. His nuncupative will, 19 Sept. 1682, left his house in Ipswich, on part of his father's land near the mill, to his widow Abigail for life, who
lived in it until her death 2 Apr. 1728, age 87, after which releases reveal their posterity, represented 6 children, including Thomas, tailor, of Ipswich, Thomas, tailor, of Marblehead, others of Boston, Cambridge, Isle of Nassau. It seemed
desirable to untangle these Ipswich Thomases so as to know the relations between the Clarks here.
Research Notes: Child - Thomas Clark Sergt.

Research Notes: Child - Nathaniel Clark
Nathaniel (42) born 1642, brother of (49), never lived in N. H., but his children did and widow with all the younger children. His posterity well hunted by George Kuhn Clark. At 21 he married into an important Newbury family and lived his short
but useful life there. Will 21, died 25 Aug. 1690. He married 23 Nov. 1663 Elizabeth Somerby, who married 2d, Rev. John Hale of Beverly, who died 15 May 1700, after which she lived with son (Rev. John 21) in Exeter and died 15 Mar. 1716, age 71
(gravestone).
Research Notes: Child - Samuel Clark
Samuel (49), ±27 in 1671-2, ±40 in 1685, Portsmouth tanner. Nathaniel (42) was certainly his brother, and presumably also Jonathan and Josiah, taxed with Samuel in Portsmouth 1672. Samuel's first appearance was in Portsmouth 10 Feb. 1667,
already married to Ann Leader, daughter of the distingished promoter, and neice of the wife of Capt. Richard Cutt. Whether he met her in Portsmouth or in Barbadoes is undetected; her father died after remarring, she may have been living with
her aunt or sister here. By calling Samuel was a tanner, but he was otherwise active. Jury 1682, 1684, 1685; grand jury 1683. In 1672 he and Mr. Mattoon were with John Clark at Ipswich, where Philip Mattoon was John Clark's apprentice. Lists
326c, 329, 331b, 52, 55ab, 57, 92. His will, 21 June 1686 - 8 Oct. 1691 left all to his wife for bringing up their three youngest children. Her will, 28 Sept. - 4 Dec. 1723 left all to her (unfortunate) daughter Sarah, thus shutting out our
information. She was given victualer's and innholder's licenses. In 1720 Sarah was granted administration on the estate of her father and uncle Richard Cutt and George Leader. Lists 330d, 331c, 337, 335a, p. 175. Only 6 of their children,
perhaps numerous, are disclosed.
Research Notes: Child - Jonathan Clark
Jonathan (25), brother of (Samuel 49), taxed with him 1672 Portsmouth. Witnessed with Sergt. Thomas 1677. Witnessed at Newbury 1679. ±21 in 1669, ±32 10 Mar. 1679. Ipswich soldier in Philip's War, his Narragansett grant in Buxton was allowed in
1735 to Nathaniel, either of Newbury, grandson of (Nathaniel 42), or of Ipswich, son of his brother Sergt Thomas jr. One Jonathan had grants at Portland 1680. List 225a. Jonathan of Newbury, tanner, married 15 May 1683 Lydia Titcomb. Recorded
children. Nathaniel (42) and Jonathan (25) lived in Newbury.
Research Notes: Child - Josiah Clark
Josiah (31), taxed at Portsmouth with (Samuel 49) in 1672, in 1675 was in the service of Mr. John Cutt (2). His excellent autograph is found on Mr. Cutt's papers in 1676. It is not easy to picture him as (Josiah 32), who upon occasion married a
