NOTES:
Comptroller of Scotland, 1499.
"In the Service of Lieutenant Home, as nearest heir male of Patrick, first Earl of Marchmont in 1799, and again in his Petition to the King in 1804, Patrick Hume (the Founder of the Family of Polwart) is represented to have died before 1480, and to have been succeeded by a son, Patrick (afterwards Sir Patrick) Hume, who is said to have obtained a grant of the lands of Birghamshiels from the Duke of Albany in 1483, to have died in 1504, and to have been succeeded by his son Alexander Hume; but in all the Claimant's subsequent statements, the two Patrick Humes are considered one and the same person."
....
The "Birth Brief," (A Copy of this Document will be found in the Appendix, No.I.) which is still extant, in the Marchmont Repositories, with the Great Seal of Scotland attached, is addressed by the King to all Foreigh Emperors, Kings, Princes, &c. It traces the Pedigree of Alexander Hume up to Sir David Home of Wedderburn (second son of the Earl of Home), and agrees in all points (except respecting the two Patrick Humes in question) with the main line of Hume of Polwart, as it has been proved by the Claimant, which favours the presumption that it is no less accurate throughout.(b)
....
(b) The earliest three generations of the Polwart Family are thus described in the Birth Brief; "Qui vero Alexander" (that is, Alexander Hume, in the Pedigree) "fuit filius legittimus domini Patricij Hume de Polwart dicti regni nostri thesaurarij inter eum et dominam Mariam Edmonstoun ejus sponsam filiam Joannis Edmonstoun de eodem genitus. Et qui Patricius Hume fuit filius legittimus Patricij Hume de Polwart inter eum et Margaretam Sinclair ejus uxorem filiam Joannis Sinclair Comarchi de Hermistoun natus."
[Case on the Part of Sir Hugh Hume Campbell of Marchmont, Baronet, in relation to the Claim of Francis Douglas Home, Esquire, to the Titles, Honours and Dignities of Earl of Marchmont, Viscount of Blazonberry, Lord Polwart of Polwart, Reidbraes and Greenlaw. Presented to the Lords in 1843. Printed by Spottiswoode and Robertson, Westminster; pp. 76, with chart.]
Sir Patrick of Polwarth, had a grant of Birgamshiels from the Duke of Albany, and in 1497, a grant from the King of the Lands of Argaty and Lundies; had a summons for treason issued against him in 1478, for his adherence to the Duke of Albany. In 1493, he made a pilgrimage to Canterbury. In 1499, he was knighted and made Comptroller of Scotland, died before 1504. In 1434, John Sinclair, of Herdmanston, brought an action against George and Patrick for "ye wranguis takin and withalding of ye Hous of Hirdmanston," by which it would appear that they would not wait to inherit their father-in-law's property, but had actually ousted him. (Marchmont case).
[From History of Dunbar Hume and Dundas from Drummond's Noble British Families, William Pickering, London 1846]
In the Birth-brief of Lord Marchmont there is another generation of a Patrick who married Mary Edmondstone, daughter of Edmondstone of that ilk; but it is difficult to reconcile this with the persons in the next generation, who were undoubtedly the issue of the above two marriages; and it is mentioned nowhere else. He may have been an elder son who died vivente patre.

file sent by Jeanne, djpeace@bright.net, from Virginia's information:
In 1775, James moved with his family to Rutland County, VT settling in the area of Clarendon. While there, he volunteered as a pvt. in Capt. Jerathmel Powers' Co. in Col. Barnett's VT regiment. He served for one month. He then volunteered in 1777 and served short tours at various times until 1781, amounting in all to one year, under Capt.s Thomas Sawyer, Ichabod Robinson, Abraham Salisbury and Col. Thomas Lee of the VT Troops. James lived for about 40 years in Clarendon after the Revolution and then moved to Hartland, Niagara Co., NY.
From his pension application for his service in the Revolution (he was allowed a pension on Sep 14, 1832): About 1782 or 1783, James married Phebe Williams. Phebe was born Aug 7, 1754 in Providence, RI, the daughter of Goliah and Susanna_ Williams. She was the sister of his brother, Obadiah Edmunds' wife, Sarah Williams. She was the gg Granddaughter of Roger Williams. Phebe died either in childbirth or shortly thereafter. The child (name unknown) died sometime later. (According to information just received from Vermont, they had PHOEBE OR PHEBE WILLIAMS marrying JAMES EDMUNDS III on September 9, 1784 but this cannot be correct according to date that BENONI EDMUNDS, first son of JAMES III and OLIVE ROBINSON EDMUNDS was born. This date of marriage is in the Danby Town Records. I wonder if the date was hard to read and they put it down as 1784 instead of 1782 or 1783. (A mystery but will add this to include all information I find.)
Olive Robinson was christened on Mar 24, 1764, in Coventry, Kent Co., RI, the daughter of Amos and Hepsibeth Robinson. Benoni was the eldest son and child of James and Olive. He was a Capt. in the U.S. Army in the War of 1812. His address at one time was Wright's Corners in Niagara Co., NY. He married Jemima Horton in 1804 in Clarendon, VT. She was born Jan 23, 1782.
Posted at Rootsweb: "The Buffalo, NY DAR placed a cast iron chair between his and wife's grave with a bronze plaque on the back. Graves are close to the main entrance road and are at a 'V' angle with chair in center. Tombstones read Father and Mother."
Edmunds Book:
Sec. 67. But the date "1784" is clearly an error; for according to several members of the family, he was married in 1783 to his second wife, OLIVE ROBINSON (see Sec. 70 ), who died in September, 1803, and was buried in the graveyard on the old Robinson place, about three-fourths of a mile from the West Clarendon church.
She bore him seven children:
BENONI, born December 21, 1784 - Sec. 144.
ROBERT, born February 13, 1787 - Sec. 146.
PHEBE, born January 5, 1789 - Sec. 148.

Sec. 68. His third wife was FREELOVE OLIN ( Sec. 41, 101 ), who was born June 12, 1774, and died August 20, 1843.

Political Background:
1863-1866: Governor of Dakota Territory
Governor Edmunds grew up in New York, and in 1832 his family moved to Michigan. Edmunds came to Yankton in 1861 where he became chief clerk in the surveyor general's office.
Edmunds was notified of his appointment as territorial governor by President Lincoln on October 17, 1863. He took the oath of office on November 2, 1863. His most important contribution was participating in the 1865 and 1866 negotiation of treaties with the Sioux and other tribal groups along the Missouri. The territorial governor also served as superintendent of Indian affairs for Dakota Territory. Upon his return from a peace mission on August 8, 1866, he was replaced as governor, as a result of political quarreling between President Andrew Johnson and radical Republicans.
Edmunds continued to live in Yankton where he was active in civic life. He helped to organize the first church, took an active part in building the first school, and also helped in the establishment of an academy. He was head of a banking firm which he organized in 1869. His interest in political matters continued and he was a member of the Territorial Council in 1879.
Governor Edmunds participated in the negotiation of Indian treaties.

From "Remembering Empire thru Pictures"
John LaRue-first white settler in Empire. Born in 1814. John came to
Glen Arbor by in 1848
where he engaged in fishing and fur trading. He moved to Empire about 1854, (I think 1852,
as in my gr-gr-grandmothers writing (Arvilla A.Smith) she stated that they spent several
days with the LaRues when they left Northport to take their 2 children to College.) (Note:
The Rev. G.N.Smith and family with several other families were the first settlers in Northport
arriving there July 11, 1849.) building a trading post on the shore of Lake Michigan. He
died in 1897.
From: "Some Other Day-Remembering Empire"
According to the diary of Mrs. John E. Fisher, in June 1887, John LaRue purchased 40 acres
of land in Empire from the U.S.Government. Mrs. Sophia Larue deeded part of the land to
her daughter, Mary McCall, her son, Frank J. LaRue, and her daughter Carrie Bowes. In
1908 John Fry purchased the piece, including the LaRue Hotel from Carrie M. Bowes.
Below this is a picuture, captioned:

......
Services in the Empire School: "It is believed that worship was held in the Empire School, on the site of the present James Johnson garage from about 1885 to 1894. Here, in 1891, a Reverend Colter began the organization of the present Empire Methodist Church. Charter member were Ruel Boynton, Marvin LaCore and Mrs. Georgiana Norconk. Following him was Rev. S. Snyder who built the church (which is now the Masonic Temple) probably in 1894 or 1885. It is believed that the property upon which that church stood was donated by the John LaRue family.
.....
Another Paragraph:]
One time I was walking down the hill with Dena Setter when we met Ellen LaRue with her
little black bag. Dena was to stay all night with us, and in the morning we were told of a
new baby at Setter's house. I was flabbergasted! I was within a inch of that black bag !
Everyone in Empire knew who Ellen LaRue was. Ellen graduated from Nursing School at
the Univ. Of Michigan. She and her doctor husband, Dr. Frank LaRue, lived where Maude
Lambkin lives now. He was not a dentist, but as a doctor, he pulled teeth, as he pulled
one for me.
The doctor always stopped at our house in Norway Town for mother, as an interpreter.
From memories of Selma Christensen Edison
John is in the 1870 census index for Leelanau Co., but not the 1860 census.
The LaRue Hotel
The John LaRues were the first white settlers in this area. John LaRue came from Chicago
to Manitou Island in 1847 for health reasons. He went back to Royalton, NY and married
Sophia LaCore in 1851. They came by ship "The Sultana", a freighter, to Leelanau County.
Then in 1851, they moved to Northport for the winter. In 1852 they came to Glen Arbor
and in 1858 to Empire. They built a house in the area where Leota Nowicki now lives, on
Front, LaRue and Lake Streets. They later added a long building to the front of this house
with about 20 to 25 rooms upstairs, an office and living parlor and dining room, using the
former part of the house for a kitchen and family living quarters.
This was known as the LaRue Hotel. It was in operation from about 1870 to 1908.
(This booklet also contains a picture showing part of the LaRue house.

Email from Sherrie Risch, jbsr@yahoo.com:...My husband is descended from Alonzo Slyfield (1825-1896), the man who was keeper of the Manitou Island and Point Betsy lighthouses and later a resident of Frankfurt, MI. In 1912, his son, Charles B. Slyfield (1854-1925) wrote an autobiography that still circulates among his descendants. In describing his parents' early days at Manitou Island, Slyfield mentions their LaRue neighbors a number of times. I've copied two paragraphs mentioning the LaRues for you...: "(Manitou Island lighthouse) was a pretty lonesome place to stop at, no neighbors very near. Mr. John Larue lived where Empire now is; he moved there the same season that we came. He had a wife and six children; they lived in a small shanty right on the beach of Lake Michigan. A man by the name of Thomas Wickham lived at Glen Lake, about three miles east, and Glen Arbor was about nine miles north. There was a dock for wooding steam boats and a small store there, also a few families scattered around.
In the fall of 1859 there came ashore on the beach at Empire one hundred kegs of gun powder and Mr. Larue picked it up and saved it to blow big logs to pieces as he had no team and they were too heavy to handle otherwise. By spring he had a clearing of several acres which he planted to potatoes, corn, wheat and 'beggas,' also had a nice garden of all kinds of vegetables. This farm was the prettiest location that one could imagine, the land came out level right to the lake shore, not over two feet of bank where it joined the sand on the beach and was a heavy black loam and underlaid by a bed of white marl of unknown depth. We dug eighteen feet to get a well but did not get through the marl. It was all heavy hard wood timber right down to the shore."
Kathy Westbrook at Genforum: I do not have positive proof that John LaRue is the father of Catherine but have been told that by older members of the family and been given pictures of him and of Catherine. The dates in John LaRue's life seem to jog in and out with a pattern of almost two separate lives. In Various books I have purchased about Empire, Michigan he lived and travelled with the Ottowa and Chippewa Indians for years and even ran a trading post in Crystal Falls, Michigan for a number of years that coincide with the birth of Catherine. On mixed blood census in various Michigan counties, LaRue is listed as a surname. Catherine looks very much like John LaRue. After 1852, when Catherine was born, John LaRue has land ownership in various counties and states. The fact that he travelled with Catherine's people and is buried feet from her along with her husband leads me to continue my research.
Headline: John LaRue Dead!
The oldest white settler in Leelanau County
passed away at the age of 83
John LaRue, the subject of this sketch, was born December 6th, 1814, in Albany, N.Y. While a small child, his parents moved to New York City where he lived until seven years of age. About this time, his mother died and his father with his family of small children moved to Glen Falls where the early boyhood days of John LaRue was spent in various pursuits and occupations presented by the conditions and circumstances of his surroundings. John was naturally of a roving disposition and the stories of the new eldorado of the west and British colonies fired him with a zeal to push out into the tracks ... wilderness and seek for himself a fortune and a world of his own which up to the time he was 17 years of age had been bounded by a very small horizon. His first adventure was into the wilds of Canada where he was taken ... and came near dying among strangers of the dread scourge. Means of communication ... were slow and loborious and ... save by his father and three ... means of learning the particulars as in these days of electrical science, he was given up as dead. In the meantime his father died, the sisters were married and the family broken up. At the age of 20, or about four years of absence, he again sought his old home at Glen Falls, but as conditions had changed and the ... of the world he had seen only inspired him to reach out further, and taking leave of his old home he went to Greenville, Pa. where he was engaged in the furniture trade for some time. He then went to Burlington, Iowa. While in Burlington at the age of 21 he joined the Masonic order of which he has always been a devoted member. The ritual of his order was the bible, and its teachings his religion. He lived a Mason and died a Mason, devoted to the teachings of this mystic order of which the writer knows nothing yet sees its great work of brotherly love and philanthropy on every hand.
At the age of 25 he married and bought a farm in Cook Co., Ill. The old deed now in the family possesion will show the following description: - "The W 1/2 of the N.E. 1/4 of Sec. 6 in township 38 north range 14 east of the 3rd. principal Meridian, containing 80 and 66-100ths acres more or less, being in the county of Cook and State of Illinois." The consideration was $1250, or about $15 1/2 per acre. This piece of land was situated on the south fork of the Chicago river and is at present covered with millions of dollars worth of blocks of brick and granite and in the centre nearly of one of the worlds greatest metropolis'.
The human mind can scarcely conceive the rapid advance of civilization until it is brought face to face with those who have lived during the years of building of a great city ith a population of a million souls upon the very ground where in the prime of life he held the plow handles to till he native soil.
In 1846 his wife died leaving him with two small children - a boy and girl. The boy eas named Enslee B. LaRue and the girl Harriet, now Mrs. Magner who lives in Lockport, New York. After the death of his wife, being in poor health he came to Mackinaw, in search for a more suitable climate. His health improved and having an eye for business he concluded to sell his farm in Chicago which he did and returned to the Manitou Islands where he began trading with the indians and fishing. This was in 1847. He sold his Chicago property for $17.50 per acre. He located a trading post at South Manitou and one at Sleeping Bear Bay, now Glen Haven, and soon had one at Leland. In 1851 he was married to Miss Sophia Lakor in Lockport, N.Y., his present wife who came here with him on the old steamboat Sultana and was landed on North Manitou and crossed to the mainland in small fishing boats and lived at Northport in the house with Missionary John Smith. He had five children by his present wife Mrs. Mary McCall Mrs. Della Comstock, Chas. Sj. LaRue, Mrs. Carrie Bowes and Frank J. LaRue. In 1852 John LaRue purchases of John Smith of Northport 44 acres of land at Glen Arbor and in 1853 built a house and other buildings to carry on his business of fishing and trading with the indians. His nearest neighbors were at Northport on the east and the nearest white settler south was at Point Betsy now the village of Frankfort. Here there was a white man whose wife was a squaw and in speaking of these people Mrs. LaRue tells of a circumstance of the early day which is remembered by the older inhabitants. This man living at Point Betsy lost his wife and he promptly went in search of another. He found one. This time a white woman and promptly appropriated the same. The husband of the woman came to John LaRue who was Justice of the Peach and took steps to recover ... the matter never came to trial ... is alleged that the two men ... the Point ... woman who he had induced ... him. It is said they lived peacefully togeter on the shore of lake Michigan and are yet living somewhere in that part of the country.
The County of leelanau was a wilderness and when John LaRue located here he was the first white settler in what is now Leelanau county that was in 1847 - fifty years ago. For a half century Mr. LaRue has battled with th vicissitudes incident to a pioneer life and in that time has seen a thriving village grow up where the indian's bark tepee or the fleet footed deer could be found to break the monotoy of a primeval solitude. He saw the rise and fall of King Strang who held supreme sway on the Beaver Islands and at one time he and John Dorsey with others lay behind their barricades expecting every moment to see the red sail of the lake pirates bear the outlaws toward their little settlement of fisherman. Fortunately they never had a skirmish with the red handed outlaws, but had they at any time attempted to land would have received a recrption from those sturdy young woodsman and fisherman that would have caused them to remember the little fishing settlement on Sleeping Bear Bay.
In 1856 Mr. LaRue bought the tract of land where Empire is now situated and where he moved with his family in 1859 where he has since resided. Mr LaRue was commissioned Postmaster at Empire in 1864 and held it continuously until Cleveland's first term when M. LaCore was appointed. He held it again through Harrison's administration and when Cleveland was elected to his second term he resigned having held the Post Office altogether a term of 20 years. In politics he was a unswerving uncompromising republican and did much for the party in his quiet way and held numerous petty offices in the early history of the county.
To such veterans as Mr. LaRue the present generation owes an everlasting debt of gratitude, a debt that can never be paid. For those noble patriarchs sacrificed the benefit of society, their homes and friends to give up their manhood to a life of work of reclaiming the forest to the use of manking. The present generation should bow to the pioneers of this country for subduing the forest and transforming a wilderness filled only with savages and wild beasts into fruitful fields of industry, wealth and enlightedment. Mr. LaRue's text by which he lived was the "Golden Rule." No man ever went hungry from his door. No person was so degraded but the philanthropic heart of the old pioneer would reach out and give him succor in the hour of need. His character was of the sturdy puritan class born of impact with nature's children and nature's laws. He will be missed in all this part of the state. But to his memory he has erected a monument of his own which will stand longer than any granite shaft and one which time nor the elements can not wear away. It is his text by which he lived: "Do unto others as ye would that they should do unto you." Mr. LaRue was taken ill the 7th day of December, the day after he was 83 years old and passed away Saturday night, December 11. His death was as peaceful as his life. The spark of life simply went out and all that was mortal of John LaRue, the pioneer of Leelanau County, lay in the cold embrace of death. His simple charity and matchless tolerance of error and his almost divine spirit of forgiveness of the faults of others are indelibly stamped upon the tablets of our memory, that time is powerless to consign to oblivion, were virtues not to be entombed in the grave. His transcendant goodness which blessed so many lives and cheered so many hearts is surely an attribut to immortality. Therefore, we feel that our tribute to this noble man should not be one of sorrow and lamentation. More fitting seems the paen of triumphant glory by which we herald to the angels the coming of a saintly soul:
Stars that shoot along the sky
Shines brightest when they fall from high
We feel in his death an eclipse darkening out stellar sky, assuaged only by the remembrance that peculiarly ... may it be said of such as he:
O Grave: where is thy victory?
O Death: where is thy sting?
Rev. C.W. Williams payed a glowing tribute to his old friend in his sermon of comfort which was delived at the house at 10 o'clock Tuesday, December 14. Beautiful floral offerings were prepared by the hands of Mrs. Willard and Mrs. Mosgrove and the obsequies at the grave were conducted by the Masonic order and mother earth closed over the mortal remains of John LaRue, the patriarch of Leelanau Co.

James Madison Edmunds pg. 395
Edmunds, James Madison, postmaster, was born in Niagara county, N.Y., Aug. 23, 1810; son of Robert Edmunds, and descended from the Edmunds family of New England. He received a good school training and was a teacher in various schools in New York state, 1826-31. He removed to Washtenaw county, Mich., with his parents in 1831, and became a merchant in Ypsilanti. He was a school inspector, a member of the state senate, 1840-41; a state representative, 1846; and was defeated as a Whig candidate for governor of Michigan, in 1847. He was a member of the state constitutional convention of 1851; was chairman of Republican state central committee, 1855-61; removed to Detroit in 1853; was comptroller of the city, 1857-61; commissioner of the U.S. land office, Washington, D.C., 1861-66; postmaster of the U.S. senate, 1866-1869, and postmaster of Washington city, 1869-97. He was president of the national council of the union league of America, 1862-69, and president of the Michigan soldiers' relief association, 1861-66. He died in Washington, D.C., Dec. 14, 1879.

Edmunds, J. M. (James Madison), 1810-1879 James M. Edmunds correspondence, 1861-1866.
From the Edmunds Book: was once a candidate on the Whig ticket for Lieutenant Governor of Michigan. Since the organization of the Republican party, in 1854-6, he (as also most of the Edmunds family) has been a working member of it. He was selected in 1861 by President Lincoln to fill the responsible position of Commissioner of the General Land Office at Washington, and occupied that post with credit until removed by President Johnson in 1865. He was then made Postmaster to the United States Senate; and in May, 1869, was promoted to be Postmaster for the city of Washington. He is the head of the extensive civico-military organization known as the Union League.
(the Edmunds Book is unclear as to whether he married - "Judge Edmunds married a niece to M. Vassar, of Poughkeepsie, NY. She bore him five children, of whom two died young. Three sons, born in 1841, 1846, and 1849, they raised." - or is this referring to someone else?

According to the Edmunds book, she had five children and was married to Thomas North - has someone mixed these data up?

NEWTON EDMUNDS
Second Territorial Governor
Residence: Yankton, Dakota Territory
Years Served: 1863-1866
Date of Inauguration: November 2, 1863
Age at Inauguration: 44
Politics: Republican
Born: May 31, 1819 - Hartland, New York
Died: February 13, 1908 - Yankton, South Dakota
