Dictionary of American Biography, Vol. VII, Mills-Platner, Edited by Dumas Malone, Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York:
Major General Richard Montgomery (St. Andrews, Trinity College, Dublin), soldier, was the third son of Thomas and Mary (Franklyn or Franklin) Montgomery, and a younger brother of the notorious and cruel Captain Alexander Montgomery with whom some earlier historians confused him. He was born in Swords, County Dublin, Ireland, and educated at St. Andrews and Trinity College, Dublin. His father was a member of Parliament and he himself chose the army for a career. He was commissioned ensign in the 17th Foot, September21, 1756, and served with his regiment at the siege of Louisbourg, 1758, and in the Lake Champlain campaign in 1759. After the fall of Montreal he went with his regiment to the West Indies, where he was present at the captures of Martinique and Havana. By May 1762 he attained the rank of Captain. When peace was signed in 1763 he was ordered to New York and two years later returned to England. There he became well known among prominent liberal members of Parliament who were friends of the colonies. Foreseeing no chance of military advancement in the peace, he sold Out of the army, April 6, 1772. For some reason, never fully determined, he appears to have felt that he had no future in England and that his friends either could not or would not help him. He wrote at this time he had not conceived a violent passion for farming, that he had no friends to advance him, that with little money he could cut no figure among “Peers, Nabobs, etc.,” and that therefore he had cast his eye on America where his pride and poverty would be much more at their ease’ (New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, July 1871, p. 129).
He was, however, by no means penniless and when he arrived in New York, in accordance with his decision to emigrate, he bought a sixty-seven-acre farm at Kings Bridge. He became genuinely interested in agriculture and enjoyed rural life. On July 24, 1773, he was married to Janet, daughter of Robert R. Livingston, 1718-1775, of New York City, and although at that lime he bought other property, he spent the short remainder of his life at his wife’s estate, “Grassmere,” near Rhinebeck, in Dutchess County, New York.
Montgomery’s previous experiences in America, his friendship in England with such men as Burke and Fox, and his own views, all led him to adopt the colonial point of view as troubles thickened with the mother country, and although he had been in New York City only three years by 1775 he was elected one of the members of the Provincial Congress. In June of that year he was appointed by the Continental Congress the second in rank of the eight brigadier generals then designated, and with much honest regret and reluctance he accepted the appointment It was from a sense of duty only that he left his new home and young wife and took up arms against England. He was made second in command of the expedition which was to proceed under Major General Philip Schuyler against Montreal. As a result of Schuyler’s illness the command almost immediately devolved upon Montgomery. His troops, largely New Englanders, were poor military material. They were lacking in discipline, were constantly deserting, and at times practically mutinous. Montgomery deserves the highest praise for working them into shape for the expedition. He captured forts Chambly and St. Johns, and with the latter the first British colors, those of the 7th Fusiliers, taken in the war. Proceeding into Canada, he captured Montreal and in December joined the forces under Benedict Arnold at Point aux Trembles. The combined forces then laid siege to Quebec. It was obvious that from lack of both morale and supplies, the American army was in no condition to maintain a winter siege. An assault was ordered and made on December 31, and Montgomery was killed instantly by grapeshot. Benedict Arnold, at almost the same time, was seriously wounded in the leg. With the leadership fa1len the remainder of the fight went badly and the American forces withdrew. Having previously served in the British army at Quebec, Richard Montgomery’s body was recognized and ordered ‘decently buried by the British. In 1818 it was moved to St. Paul’s Church, New York. A plaque now marks the spot below the walls of the Citidel at Quebec where he fell. Montgomery was a capable commander of high character, with the same qualities of fearlessness and inspiring command in battle as Arnold. He was unselfish in his adherence to the American cause.
There were no children in the few hectic years of marriage before his death. His widow renamed their estate Montgomery Place near Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York. She was courted some years after the death of her husband, by General Horatio Gates, but, to the relief of her ‘Yorker’ family, declined his offer of marriage and never remarried. Upon her death their home was willed to her brother, Secretary of State Edward Livingston, who made it his retirement home.
Dictionary of National Biography, Vol XIII, Oxford University Press:
MONTGOMERY, RICHARD (1736-1775), Major-General, born in Swords, near Feltrim, County Dublin, Ireland, on 2 Dec. 1786. He was third son of Thomas Montgomery, M.P. for Lifford, by Mary Franklin, and younger brother of Captain Alexander Montgomery (‘Black Montgomery’), M.P. for Drogheda. Educated at St. Andrews and Trinity College, Dublin, he was, on 21 Sept. 1756, appointed ensign in the 17th foot, in which he became lieutenant on l0 July 1759, and captain on 6 May 1752. He served with his regiment at the siege of Louisburg, Cape Breton, in 1757, and in the expedition against the French posts of lake Champlain in 1769, and was regimental adjutant in the force under General (then Colonel) William HaviIand [q.v.], sent from Crown Point to join the forces under Murray and Amhurst converging on Montreal. After the fall of Montreal he was ‘present with his regiment at the capture of Martinique, and at the siege and capture of the Havana, At the peace of 1763 be went with his regiment from Cuba to New York, and in 1765 returned home with it.
While at home, he appears to have made the acquaintance of Colonel Isaac Barre’ [q. v.], Edmund Burke [q. v.], Charles James Fox [q. v.], and other men of liberal views. Seeing no prospects of professional advancement he sold out of the army in 1772, and bought a farm of sixty-seven acres at King’s Bridge, now a part of the city of New York, and soon after married. He then purchased a handsome estate on the river Hudson, but spent the few years of his married life at his wife’s residence, Grassmere, near Rheinbeck.
In 1775, Montgomery was sent as a delegate to the first provincial congress at New York, and in June of the same year ‘sadly and reluctantly’ consented to be made a brigadier-general in the continental (i.e. American) army, ranking second among the eight appointed, and being the only one not a native of New England. He consoled himself with the reflection that ‘the will of an oppressed people, compelled to choose between liberty and slavery, must be respected.’ He parted from his young wife at Saratoga, and started as second in command of the expedition under Major-General Philip SchuyIer, which was instructed ‘to take possession of St. John’s, Montreal, and pursue any other measure, in Canada to promote the furtherance and safety of the American Cause.’ The expedition aroused great resentment in Canada, as Congress a short time before had expressly disavowed any intention of invading Canada, and had caused the disavowal to be widely circulated there. The Americans took Isle aux Noix, but failed at St. John’s.
Schuyler then fell sick, and the change in the command was soon apparent. The troops (chiefly New England men) were of the worst character, ‘every man a general, and not one of them a soldier,’ Montgomery wrote. Supplies were bad and desertion rife. Nevertheless, Montgomery took Fort Champlain, where there was a stock of ammunition, of which the Americans were much in need, and afterwards captured St. John’s, a more important conquest, where were taken, among other captures, the colours of the British Royal Fusiliers (7th Fusiliers), the first British regimental colours taken in the war. ‘Till Quebec is taken, Canada remains unconquered,’ Montgomery wrote to Congress. In December 1776, he effected a junction with Benedict Arnold [q. c], at Point aux Trembles, and laid siege to Quebec. The American effectives are said to have numbered about eight hundred. Small-pox was in the camp; the men’s engagements were coming to an end. It was decided to try an assault. On 31 Dec. 1775, Montgomery, starting from Wolfe’s Cove in a blinding snowstorm, led an attack on the southern part of the lower town, while Arnold attacked the upper town. Calling on the ‘men of New York’ to follow, Montgomery dashed on, but, with two officers by his side, was struck down by the first discharge of artillery. Both attempts failed, and Arnold drew off to the Plains of Abraham, where he kept up a desultory sort of blockade until the spring of 1776, when the Americans withdrew from Canada.
Montgomery’s body was recognized and buried with full military honours, the governor and the officers of the garrison of Quebec attending. Congress, ‘desiring to transmit to future ages the patriotic conduct, enterprise, and prowess’ of Montgomery, desired a memorial in marble to be erected to him in the graveyard of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in New York. The memorial was ordered in Paris by Benjamin Franklin. In 1818, Congress passed an ‘Act of Honour’, by which permission of the Canadian government was obtained for the removal of Montgomery’s remains, which were then laid in St. Paul’s Church, New York. An inscription on the rocks at Cape Diamond shows the spot where he fell.
Parkman states that some writers have confused him, ignorantly and most unjustly, with Captain Alexander Montgomery, 43rd regiment (his elder brother?), who incurred the censure of his brother officers for inhumanity to some prisoners that fell into his hands when serving under Wolfe before Quebec (see Montcalm and Wolfe, vol. ii)
Montgomery married Jane; daughter of Judge R. R. Livingstone of New York, but left no issue. His widow survived ‘her soldier,’ as she called him, fifty-three years, dying n 1828.

Charlemagne King of the Franks (M)
Charlemagne King of the Franks was also known as (?) King of the Fr
anks. Charlemagne (?) King of the Franks was also known as (?) Emper
or of the Western Holy Roman Empire. His common name was Charles Martel. H
is long name was Charlemagne, King of the Franks , Emperor of the Weste
rn Holy Roman Empire. Charlemagne was born at Aix-la-Chapelle, Franc
e, on 1 April 742. He was the son of Pepin "The Short" (?) King of the Fra
nks and Bertha of Laon. He married Hildegarde of Suabia. Charlemagne was s
eparated from his wife, Hildegarde of Suabia in 771. Charlemagne (also kno
wn as Carolus Magnus, Charles the Great) was King of the Franks and Christ
ian Emperorof the west. He was Charles Martel and the eldest son of Pep
in III the Short.
On Pepin's death in 768 the Frankish kingdom was divided between Charlemag
ne and his younger brother Carloman: three years later, on Carloman's deat
h, he became sole ruler. When Carloman died suddenly, Charlemagne seized h
is territories, but Carloman's heirs took refuge at the court of Desideriu
s. By that time Charlemagne had repudiated his wife and Desiderius w
as no longer friendly.
In 772, when Pope Adrian I appealed to Charlemagne for help against Deside
rius, the Frankish King invaded Italy, deposed his erstwhile father-in-l
aw(774) and assumed the royal title. He then journeyed to Rome and reaffi
rmed his father's promise to protect papal lands.
The first years of his reign werespent in strenuous campaigns to subdue a
nd Christianize neighbouring kingdoms, particularly the Saxons to the nort
h-east (772-77) and the Lombards of northern Italy (773), where he was cro
wned King of Lombardy. In 778 he led an expedition against the Moors in Sp
ain, but withdrew the same year when his presence was required elsewher
e; the celebrated rearguard action at Roncesvalles in which Roland, his ch
ief Paladin, is said to have been overwhelmed, gave rise to heroic literat
ure of the Chanson de Roland, The Song of Roland.
In 782the Saxons rose again in rebellion and destroyed the Frankish ar
my at Suntelberg, which Charlemagne avenged by beheading 4500 Saxons. Oth
er risings followed, but in 785 the Saxon leader, Widukind, submitted a
nd accepted baptism, and became a loyal vassal.
In 788, Charlemagne deposed the ruler of Bohemia andabsorbed it into h
is empire. Farther to the east he subdued the Avars (Corresponding rough
ly to modern Hungary and Austria, they were Turko-Finnish nomads) in the m
iddle Danube basin (795-96) to create an eastern 'March' to buttress his f
rontiers; to the west he created the so-

General Notes: Child - Hugh Capet Of France
The election of Hugh Capet as king in 987 began the Capetian Dynasty whi
ch ruled France for much of the middle ages. However, the actual royal do
maine, known as Ile-de-France, was small and weak, consisting of little mo
re that the land surrounding Paris, Orléans and Laon. It was not until t
he 12th century that later Capetians took steps to strenghten the ki
ng in the Ile-de-France.
Hugh Capet (French: Hugues Capet) (938 – October 24, 996) was King of Fran
ce from 987 to 996. Capet is a nickname for "wearing a cape".
Born in 938 in Paris, he came from a powerful and influential family of t
he Germanic aristocracy of France, two members of which had already been e
lected King of France in the ninth and tenth centuries. Hugh Capet was t
he eldest son of Hugh the Great, then the most powerful man in the kingdo
m, maker of kings, and of Hedwige of Saxony (c.910–c.965), daughter of Ki
ng Henry I (the Fowler) of Germany and sister of German Emperor Otto I. Hu
gh Capet wanted to become a lay abbot, and in 980 arranged to move the rel
ics of St. Valery to Amiens Cathedral. Heinherited his father's vast esta
tes and became the most powerful noble of his time. From 978 to 986, Hu
gh Capet allied himself with the German emperors Otto II and Otto III a
nd with archbishop Adalberon of Reims to dominate the weak Carolingian kin
g, Lothair. By 985, he was king in all but name. After Lothair and his s
on died in early 987, the archbishop of Reims convinced an assembly of nob
les to elect Hugh Capet as their king. He was crowned King of France at No
yon, Picardie on July 3, 987, the first of the Capetian dynasty to rule Fr
ance.
Hugh Capet possessed minor properties near Chartres and Anjou. Between Par
is and Orléans he possessed towns and estates amounting to approximately 4
00 square miles (1,000 kmø). His authority ended there, and if he dared tr
avel outside his small area, he risked being captured and held for rans
omor even murdered. Indeed, there was a plot in 993 masterminded by the B
ishopof Laon and Odo I of Blois to deliver Hugh Capet into the custo
dy of Otto III. The plot failed, but the fact that no one was punished ill
ustrates how tenuous his hold on power was. Beyond his power base, in t
he rest of France, there were still as many codes of law as there were fie
fdoms. The country operated with 150 different forms of currency and at le
ast a dozen languages. Uniting all this into one cohesive unit was a formi
dable task and a constant struggle between those who wore the crown of Fra
nce and its feudal lords. As such,Hugh Capet's reign was marked by numero
us power struggles with the vassals on the borders of the Seine and the Lo
ire. Beyond his realm, the investiture and then deposition of Arnulf, neph
ew of the duke of Lorraine, as archbishop of Reims involved the king and b
ishops in conflict with Pope John XV that was not yet resolved at Hugh Cap
et's death in 996.
While Hugh Capet's military power was limited and he had to seek milita
ry aid from the Duke of Normandy, his unanimous election as king gave h
im great moral authority and influence.
Hugh Capet married Adelaide of Aquitaine (952–1004), daughter of Duke Will
iamIII of Aquitaine. Their children were:
1. Avoise (970–1013)
2. Robert II (March 27, 972 – July 20, 1031)
3. Alice (974–1079)
4. Gilette (born c.976)
5. Gisele (born c.978), married Hugh I of Ponthieu.
Hugh Capet died on October 24, 996 in Paris, and was interred in the Sai
nt Denis Basilica. He was succeeded by his son, Robert II.

Note: Some ill-advised and naiive people claim that
MEROVEE was descended from JESUS CHRIST and
MARY MAGDALENE. He himself claimed descent from
ODIN.
The Merovingians were a dynasty of kings that ruled
the Franks, a Germanic tribe from 481 to 751. The kings
were descendants of the chief of the Salian Franks,
Merovech, who ruled from 448 to 458 and from whom
the dynasty's name was derived. The first Merovingian
ruler was Clovis l, grandson of Merovech. Clovis became
king of both the Salian and Ripaurian Franks. In
addition, through an aggressive policy of conquest
supported by the church, Clovis enlarged his kingdom
until itincluded most of present day France and part of
Germany. After his death in 511 the kingdom was
devided among his four sons into Austrasia, Neustria,
Burgundy, and Aquitaine. The divisions were reunited
by Clotair I, divided after his death, then reunited under
Clotaire II.
The last strong Merovingian monarch was the son of
Clotaire II, Dagobert I who ruled from 629 to 639. Under
his numerous successors the Frankish kingdom
became decentralized. Royal power gradually gave way
to the noble families who exercisedfeudal control over
most of the land. The most important of these families
was the Carlongian. The Carolingians held the office of
mayor of the palace and after 639 were kings in all but
name. In 751 the Carolingian mayor of the
palacedeposed the reigning king, Childeric III (reigned
about 743-52), and assumed royal power himself as
Pepin the Short, putting an end to the Merovingian
dynasty.

Pepin 'The Short', King Of The Franks founded the Carolingian dynasty. Li
ke his father, grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, Pepin served as m
ayor of the palace in the Merovingian kingdom in France and Germany. In ea
ch case, the mayor was the power behind the throne. In 751, an assemb
ly of the Franks deposed Childeric, the last of the weak Merovingianking
s, and proclaimed Pepin king. Pope Stephen II, who ruled Rome, asked Pep
in for help against the Lombard king, Pepin sent his army to save Rome. T
heLombards had captured Ravenna. Pepin recaptured the city and much of t
he nearby territory, known as 'the Donation of Pepin,' helped build the po
litical power of the pope. Pepin added Aquitaine to his own kingdom, and b
egan many important religious and educational reforms. His son Charlemagn
e, carried on these reforms.

When Pope Stephen III was hard pressed by the Longobards, Pepin led an ar

). The rest of his life wasspent in wars against the Saxons and Saracen
