Succumbs of Skull Fracture After Crash nOn U.S. Highway 51,
James LeRoy Redd, 21, Wenona, son of Mr. ad Mrs. James Redd, former Streator residents, died at St. Mary's hospital at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, about six hours after his automobile crashed on U.S. Highway 51, two miles north of Wenona.
Redd, according to testimony by his attending physician at an inquest conducted at the Wagner funeral home at 10 a.m. today, apparentlyt hgad lain injured in his wrecked automobile for several hours before the accident was discovered and he was removed to the hospital.
It is believed the crash occured at 4 a.m. when the young man, riding alone, fell asleep at the wheel of the car, and was not discovered by a passing motorist until 8 a.m., four hours later.
He regained consciousness at the hospital for only a short period before lapsing back into a coma. His death was attrihuted to skull fracture and shock. Redd also suffered crushing injuries to the face, groken left leg and numerous cuts and bruises about the body.
The father of tge victim testified at the inquest that his son had spent most of Saturday night with friends in LaSalle after working with hinm at his grocerty store in Wenona earlier in the evening.
William Barth of Ottawa, who was with Redd in LaSalle, told the parents that he had last seen him alive at 3:15 a.m. when they parted company in LaSalle. The two young men were driving their own cars at that time when they seperated at the junction of Routes 6 and 51 in LaSalle, Garth continued on to Ottawa and Redd driving toward Wenona.
Although there were no eyewitnesses to the tragic crash, it was reported that Redd probably had fallen asleep as he neared Wenona, causing the car to leave the highway and crash into a tree in a ditch on the west side of the road. The depth of the ditch and a nearby culvert are believed to have obscured a view of the wreckage from passing motorists on the highway which made it impossible for the accident to be discovered until daylight.
A passing motorist, whose identity was not learned, saw the car in the ditch and drove to Wenona where he reported his discovery to Raymond Fornero at the latter's restaurant. The Heitz Ambulance Service in Streator was subsequently notified and the injured young man removed to the hospital.
Charles Heitz, ambulance driver, testified at the inquest that Redd was thrown out of his car in the crash and found lying near the wrecked auto, a 1938 Chevrolet coach.
Del Baker, a farmer living a block from the accident scene, said he heard what he believed to have been a crash on the highway at 4 a.m. Sunday but found no evidence of it when he looked out the windows of his home.
Funeral services for Redd will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Thierry chapel in Wenona with burial in Long Point Cemetery.
The victim was born Oct 5, 1928 a mile south of Streator. He attended grade school here and high school in LaSalle where he resided with his parents for 13 years. The Redd family moved a year ago to Wenona where James worked with his father in the latter's grocery store.
While living in Streator, the father of the victim was employed at the Federal Bakery for many years, and while in LaSalle, drove a bakery truck.
Surviving with the parents are one sister, Gaile and two brothers, Richard and Dean, all of grade school age, and three Uncles, Harry, Clarence and Dale Redd, all of Streator.
A verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquest this morning.'

Injuries received in an automobile accident May 7, (1945) - one mile west of Long Point, proved fatal for Marshall L. Ensign, 67, of that village, when he died at St. Mary's Hospital in Streator last Friday night at 9 o'clock.
His condition was regarded as serious from the beginning, becoming worse within the past week.
He is survived by his wife, formerly Flora Marston, to whom he was married December 4, 1904, at Dana, and the following children: Mrs. Anna Mae Redd of LaSalle; Rosa and Marvin Ensign of Long Point; Mrs. Alice Gould of Alva, ILL and Roswell of Streator. There are six grandchildren.
He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Mary Weber of Stanford, Mont., and a brother, Robert, of Hudson, ILL. Three sisters preceded him in death.
The son of Robert and Sarah (Wort) Ensign, he was born January 27, 1878, at Long Point, and had spent his entire life in that community where he engaged in farming. He was a member of the Long Point Masonic Lodge.
Funeral services were held from the Wagner funeral home and at the Christian church in Long Point. Burial was in the Long Point Cemetery.

A History of the Ensign family is written in Family Histories of New England, 1600. It is known that Thomas Ensigne joined the Plymouth Colony in the year 1633/34 and settled in the town of Scituate. The records show that he was married on January 17, 1638-39 to Elizabeth Wilder, not his first marriage, for he left a son in County Kent, England. He was made a freeman in the colony on March 5 following his marriage to Elizabeth Wilder. The time of his death is not known, but his will, dated July 16, 1663, and "proved" June 9, 1664, mentions his surviving children, John, Hannah, and Sarah. Another son, Thomas, had died five or six years earlier at Cranbrook in the Shire of Kent, and in his will dated September 3, 1657, and "proved" March 24, the following year, he mentioned his father, Thomas Ensigne, his brother John, and his sisters Hannah and Sarah in New England.
Through the efforts of William Oren Ensign, Rutland, IL in 1865, and several other descendents, information was compiled by Martha Eunice Ensign Nelson in Nov of 1960.

Samuel Reed, Jr., and his wife, Lois, were living here (Clifton) in 1787, He owned a small piece of land near Isaac Spencer's lot on the east bank of the Sebasticook. Later he also owned land farther up the river, but it was outside the town when the boundary wa established.
Samuel (Reed) Jr. and Lois's children were:

2. Winn, (b. 1789) ; m. Ancelliana Howard.
(Four others: Lois, Rhoda, Jane Bellknapp, and Eliza.

Ancellina Howard was the daughter of William Howard (1765 to 1834) and Mary Doe (1777 to 1875) They were married June 19, 1799 in Winslow, Maine.
They moved to Medway from Clinton. Wm. Howard died 1834 not long after moving to Medway. Mary, a widow, is mentioned in Henry D. Thoreau's book as Marm Howard's place, near where Lawrence McLaughlin's house is now. They are buried in the Lynch Cemetary, Medway.
On a handwritten paper in my writing is: Marm Howard was Mary Doe.

ORONO – Margery L. Reed, 94, passed on Thursday, April 19, 2012, with her loving family by her side at Dirigo Pines Retirement Community, Orono, where she had been a resident for several months. She lived in Bingham for many years and was born Dec. 4, 1917, in Worcester, Mass., daughter of Norwegian immigrant parents John and Christine (Eriksen) Lier.
She graduated from South High School, Worcester, Mass., in 1936 and Colby College, Waterville, where she joined Delta Delta Delta sorority and remained a proud lifelong member. At Colby she met and married the love of her life, Walter H. Reed. After graduating together in 1940, they began their teaching careers in Stratton, where their son, Thomas, was born. During World War II, she relocated several times with her son to be with her husband while he served with the Army Air Corps. After his return from overseas duty, they settled in Farmington, where they resumed their teaching careers at Farmington High School, and their daughter, Randi, was born. Margery was a well-liked and respected teacher in Farmington and Bingham for more than 25 years and was very proud of her students. She taught French and Latin and spoke Norwegian fluently. She was also versed in Russian and German. In 1965 she and Walter moved to Bingham, where she continued to teach languages until her retirement in 1977. Both her son and daughter had the privilege of having her as a teacher. She continued to be a lifelong learner and teacher with a natural curiosity about all things. She was an outdoor enthusiast and enjoying fishing, snowmobiling and camping with her family. She also loved working in her gardens, bird watching, reading, crossword puzzles and hand painting personal cards for family. She especially loved her antiques, which she referred to as "her old friends." After her husband's passing in 1991, her home on the Kennebec River was a source of comfort and pride, and she continued to live there independently until 2011. Margery was a truly gentle and compassionate lady with a sweet spirit, subtle sense of humor and a warm smile making everyone she met a friend. She was a very devoted wife and caring, loving mother. Her four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren were a constant source of pride and joy and she always considered it a blessing to watch them grow and learn about life. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband; sister, Gladys; and son-in-law, Douglas Birt. She is survived by her son, Thomas Reed and wife, Janice, of Rumford; daughter, Randi Birt of East Millinocket; grandchildren, Scott Reed and wife, Laurie, of Turner, Eric Reed and wife, Kelly, of Westbrook, Aaron Birt of Kennebunkport and Kristen O'Donnell and husband, Ryan, of Bangor; and great-grandchildren, Kyle and Natalie Reed, Gavin and Julia Reed, and Drew and Nathan O'Donnell. Her family extends heartfelt thanks to the entire staff and caregivers at Dirigo Pines Retirement Community for their loving, compassionate and outstanding care of our mother in her final months.
Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at Giberson Funeral Home, 18 River St., Bingham. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, at First Congregational Church, Meadow Street, Bingham, with the Rev. Mark K. Tanner officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial contribution to the Walter H. Reed Scholarship Fund, care of Valley High School, P.O. Box 649, Bingham, ME 04920.
