WESTMINSTER ABBEY, LONDON It is hard to imagine Westminster at
the time of the Conquest, when it occupied an island site amid
the marshes that flanked theThames. Since William the
Conqueror recieved the English crown here on Christmas Day 1066,
coronations have always been conducted in Westminster Abbey. An
earlier Saxon monastery was completely destroye by the Danes
during the eighth century. Wesminster's history as a
Benedictine house dates to its foundation by St. Dunstan in 959,
although it was Edward the Confessor who establishedits status
as the royal church of england following its consecration on 28
December 1065, just one week before his death. Henry III was
largely responsible for building the magnificent abbey church
that stands today, work on which began in 1245, favouring the
French Gothic style, which placed greater emphasis on height
than the particular English interpretation that had evolved by
then. Flying buttresses were used as a means of supporting the
height of French cathedrals, a technique deemed visually ugly by
English builders, who preferred to restrict the height and use
internal methods of support. Work on the new church advanced
rapidly, and it was reopened in 1269. Although much of the nave
was not completed until well over a century later, fortnately
the architect was content to follow the style of his
predeccessor, thereby maintaining thevisual continuity.
Westminster Abbey is not merely a church of unsurpassed beauty
it is also the last resting place of English monarchs - from
Henry III in 1272 to George III in 1820. Without doubt, the
abbey's subline architecturalachievement is the Henry VII
chapel, originally founded byt eh monarch early in the sixteenth
century with the intention of crating a shrine to Henry VI.
This plan never came to fruition and so the masterpiece of royal
mason Robert Vertue was adopted by its instigator for himself
and his queen, Elizabeth. Thefan-vaulted ceiling is elaborately
decorated with the most complex tracery imaginable, the finest
example of that art form in England. Almost ever square ich of
the chapel seems to be adorned with some form of intricate
decoration and, although the overall effect can be almost
overwhelming, it remains a quite breathtaking piece of work.
The royal tomb in the chapel is the work of a Florentine
contemporary of Michelangelo, sculptor Pietro Torrigiano, who
was commisssioned to create the most moving, gilt-bronzed
effigies of Henry and Elizabeth. However, kings and queens are
not the only ones celebrated in death; the abbey houses the
Grave to the Unknown Soldier, a nation's tribute to those slain
during the First World War. Famous names from the art,
literature and science mingle with numberous outrageously
ostentatious memorials erected to members of the nobility.

WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL, WINCHESTER, HAMPSHIRE Winchester Cathedral
is the second longest in Europe after St. Peter's in Rome, a
fact one would readily dispute based on external assessment
alone, as the building somhow fails to crate an impression of
great length. As soon as one enters the soaring,
fourteenth-century. Perpendicular nave, however, such doubts
are dispelled and the church seems to stretch to infinity beyond
the choir screen, certainly appearing even longer than its
actual 556 feet. Work on the present church began in 1079 under
the direction of Bishop Walkelin to replace the huge Saxon
foundation of Old Minster that housed the relics of St. Swithun,
a ninth-century bishop whose name is forever associated with wet

Henry II (5 March 1133 – 6 July 1189) ruled as Count of Anjou, Duke of Nor
mandy, and as King of England (1154–1189) and, at various times, controll
ed parts of Wales, Scotland, eastern Ireland, and western France. His sobr
iquets include "Curt Mantle" (because of the practical short cloaks he wor
e), "Fitz Empress," and sometimes "The Lion of Justice," whichhad also ap
plied to his grandfather Henry I. He ranks as the first of the Plantagen
et or Angevin Kings.
Following the disputed reign of King Stephen, Henry's reign saw efficie
nt consolidation. Henry II has acquired a reputation as one of England's g
reatest medieval kings.
He was born on 5 March , 1133, at Le Mans to the Empress Matilda and her s
econd husband, Geoffrey the Fair, Count of Anjou. Brought up in Anjo
u, he visited England in 1149 to help his mother in her disputed cla
im to the English throne.
Prior to coming to the throne he already controlled Normandy and Anj
ou on the continent; his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine on May 18, 11
52 added her holdings to his, including Touraine, Aquitaine, and Gascon
y. He thus effectively became more powerful than the king of France — wi
th an empire (the Angevin Empire) that stretched from the Solway Firth alm
ost to the Mediterranean and from the Somme to the Pyrenees. As king, he w
ould make Ireland a part of his vast domain. He also maintained lively com
munication with the Emperor of Byzantium Manuel I Comnenus.
In August 1152, Henry, previously occupied in fighting Eleanor's ex-husba
nd Louis VII of France and his allies, rushed back to her, and they spe
nt severalmonths together. Around the end of November 1152 they parted: H
enry went to spend some weeks with his mother and then sailed for Englan
d, arriving on 6 January 1153. Some historians believe that the couple's f
irst child, William, Count of Poitiers, was born in 1153.
During Stephen's reign the barons had subverted the state of affairs to un
dermine the monarch's grip on the realm; Henry II saw it as his first ta
sk to reverse this shift in power. For example, Henry had castles which t
he barons had built without authorisation during Stephen's reign torn dow
n, and scutage, a fee paid by vassals in lieu of militaryservice, beca
me by 1159 a central feature of the king's military system. Record keepi
ng improved dramatically in order to streamline this taxation.
Henry II established courts in various parts of England, and first institu
ted theroyal practice of granting magistrates the power to render legal d
ecisions on a wide range of civil matters in the name of the Crown. His re
ign saw the production of the first written legal textbook, providing t
he basis of today's"Common Law".
By the Assize of Clarendon (1166), trial by jury became the norm. Since t
he Norman Conquest jury trials had been largely replaced by trial by orde
al and "wager of battel" (which English law did not abolish until 1819). P
rovision of justice and landed security was further toughened in 1176 wi
th the Assize of Northampton, a build on the earlier agreements at Clarend
on.This reform proved one of Henry's major contributions to the social hi
story of England. As a consequence of the improvements in the legal syste
m, the power of church courts waned. The church, not unnaturally, oppos
ed this and found its most vehement spokesman in Thomas Becket, the Archbi
shop of Canterbury,formerly a close friend of Henry's and his Chancello
r. Henry had appointed Becket to the archbishopric precisely because he wa
nted to avoid conflict.
The conflict with Becket effectively began with a dispute over whether t
he secular courts could try clergy who had committed a secular offence. He
nry attempted to subdue Becket and his fellow churchmen by making them swe
ar to obey the "customs of the realm", but controversy ensued over what co
nstituted these customs, and the church proved reluctant to submit

On January 2, 2007 God gave for a fleeting moment a baby boy named Benjam in Asher Enman to Patrick and Susan so that they might have everlasting me mories and to also promise to them that this baby boy would have an everla sting place in heaven because of their faith in God and Jesus Christ. The ir prayers assure a place in heaven not only for them, but for those th at they pray unselfishly for. Most of mankind has to stay on this earth f or life time, but Benjamin Asher Enman did not need to go through the tri als and tribulations, because he had already earned a place in heaven. G od has a purpose for everyone and everything and our trust in him wi ll be seen by all that God has created in the after life. In the whole s cheme of things life is nothing more than a minute moment in time. Some m oments just seem to take longer than others. Put your trust in God and pr ay for those that are unable so that everyone including all sorts of li fe will be accepted into heaven. God created all forms of life and I'm su re that everything has a purpose for now and evermore....

But I w ant you to come up as soon as you can and see Shirley's little sister, s he was born night before last. Kathrine had a lot easier time this time a nd wasn't sick long. Shirley is running around and she don't know wh at to do she is kind of mad I guess. I didn't work this afternoon as I st uck a nail in my foot last night and can hardly step on it now. If you co me up try and come towards evening because I have to work most every S un or come up and stay all day. Just finished writing to Ma they will ha ve to come in the evening as they have to work every day. Well must clo se and hope you come up soon.

Dear Arlene,
Thought I would write and tell you we have got a baby boy born this af ternoon about one oclock. We haven't heard from you for so long we thoug ht you were all dead. What is Carl doing now is he driving truck hope s o. I have been sawing on a yard up until Sat. and started this noon loadi ng Tractor. Just wrote to Pa and Ma, expect them down any day. When a re you folks coming up soon I hope. How is Earlene she must be pretty b ig now. Shirley has been up to Mas for pretty near 3 weeks and she will p robably be up there two more anyway. Ruby takes five or six steps now s he will soon be walking. Well as I have got to go up to the store and g et some oranges and mail these letters Ma and Pa were down a week ago Su n. Wish you folks could come up I haven't had money enough to go anywher e. When I was down last fall was the last time I have been town Berl in or anywhere. May get out next Spring. Kathrine and the baby are comi ng good. Well come up soon.

Mrs. Jessie R. Simmons of East Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA, died Friday, O ct 1, 1982, at the Rumford Community Hospital, Rumford, Oxford, Maine, US A, where she had been a patient for eight days.
She had been a resident of East Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA, since 194 6. She was born in West Devon, Prince Edward Island, May 1, 1898 the daugh ter of Daniel and Margaret MacArthur Enman. She was a member of the Calva ry Congregational Church, South Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA, and a form er member of the Canadian Legion of World War I. She attended schools in P rince Edward Island, Canada and was married in Portland, Cumberland, Main e, USA, Oct. 8, 1919, to William K. Simmons, who died in Rumford, Oxfor d, Maine, USA, June 1, 1973.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Lester (Jean) White and Mrs. Ralph ( Marjorie) Stinson, and a son William K. Simmons Jr., all of East Andove r, Oxford, Maine, USA; 21 grandchildren, and 38 great-grandchildren, a nd a great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Calvary Congregation al Church, South Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA, with Rev. Donald Grover offi ciating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA.

It is believed that this Jeremiah Enman was born in New York State, US A. His father was killed in the service during the war and Jeremiah le ft New York, USA, and later settled in Prince Edward Island, Canada he to ok with him his mother and brother Thomas about this time the spelling cha nged from Inman to Enman. I cannot prove that David is his brother, but u ntil I prove otherwise I will assume he was. Some sources say that Dav id and Jeremiah were sons of Jeremiah and Margaret Benoit. His mother rem arried James Laird. It is assumed that they were all descendants of Edwa rd Inman who came to Providence, Providence, Rhode Island, USA from Englan d. (information derived from Holly Lane (Weber's) files on 5-30-2000).

Last Will and Testament of Jeremiah Enman of Vernon River, Queens County
In the name of God Amen The fifteenth day of August one thousand eight hun dred and fifty seven.
I Jeremiah Enman of Vernon River, Queens County of Prince Edward Island, F armer being weak of body, but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given u nto God. Therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my body.
Knowing that it is appointed unto all men once to die, do make and orda in this my last will and testament that is to say, I give, demise, and dis pose of the worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in th is life in the following manner and form.
First, that my dearly beloved wife Margret claims, and is duly entitl ed to receive from my estate her maintenance, clothing and every necessa ry comfort that may be requisite to minister to her wants as long as she s hall live.
Also I give and bequeath to my oldest and well beloved son David Enman h is heirs, executors, and administrators, forty acres of land a little mo re or less situate on the east side of the farm by him, his heirs, executo rs and administrators freely to be possessed and enjoyed without any mann er of conditions.
Also my well beloved daughter Isabella Enman shall be entitled to her main tenance and clothing provided she remain single and perform the duti es of one of the household and if she marry shall receive as dower one six th of the cattle and one fourth of the sheep. Or as much money as sha ll be equivalent to the aforesaid proportions of the stock to be raised a nd levied out of my estate, and paid to her within three months after marr iage by my executor thereafter named.
Also I give and bequeath to each of my well beloved sons and daughters Jo hn Enman, Jeremiah Enman, Daniel Enman, Ann Enman, Sarah Enman, Margaret E nman and Mary Enman, the sum of five shillings lawful current money of th is Island, to be raised and levied out of my estate, and to be paid to th em by my executors here afternamed for the purpose of making solid this wi ll.
Also I give and bequeath to my well beloved son Thomas Enman whom I likewi se constitute, make, and ordain, my sole exector of this my last will a nd testament, all and singular my lands and messuages, and tenements, by h im his heirs executors and administrators freely to be possessed and enjoy ed. And I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke, and disannul, all and eve ry other former testaments, will, legacies, bequests, and executor s, by me inanyways before names, willed and bequeathed, ratifying and conf irming this, and no other, to be my last will and testament.

Mrs. Jessie R. Simmons of East Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA, died Friday, O ct 1, 1982, at the Rumford Community Hospital, Rumford, Oxford, Maine, US A, where she had been a patient for eight days.
She had been a resident of East Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA, since 194 6. She was born in West Devon, Prince Edward Island, May 1, 1898 the daugh ter of Daniel and Margaret MacArthur Enman. She was a member of the Calva ry Congregational Church, South Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA, and a form er member of the Canadian Legion of World War I. She attended schools in P rince Edward Island, Canada and was married in Portland, Cumberland, Main e, USA, Oct. 8, 1919, to William K. Simmons, who died in Rumford, Oxfor d, Maine, USA, June 1, 1973.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Lester (Jean) White and Mrs. Ralph ( Marjorie) Stinson, and a son William K. Simmons Jr., all of East Andove r, Oxford, Maine, USA; 21 grandchildren, and 38 great-grandchildren, a nd a great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Calvary Congregation al Church, South Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA, with Rev. Donald Grover offi ciating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA.
