2nd Lord Neville of Raby.
He was aged 40 or more at his father's death. He had a long career of
military and public service. He was taken prisoner with his younger
brothers in 1319 in a border fray by James "the Black" Douglas, earl of
Douglas. He was ransomed and fought in further campaigns, being the hero
of the battle of Durham, or Neville's Cross, October 17, 1346, when he
took prisoner King David of Scotland. A dispute which began in the
lifetime of his father, Randolph, was revived regarding the tenure of
Raby Castle. The charter of 1131 issued by Prior Algar stipulated merely
for the payment of an annual rent of four pounds, but it had become the
custom for the lord of Raby to offer to the prior of Durham, on St.
Cuthbert's Day, a stag, the presentation being accompanied by the blowing
of horns. Randolph had claimed the right of being entertained on these
occasions with as large a retinue as he chose to bring, who were to serve
him in place of the prior's servants. The prior denied the right and
refused to accept the stag on such terms, whereupon a bitter quarrel
ensued which did not end in words. The monks, being unarmed, seized the
altar candlesticks and using them as weapons, forced Lord de Neville's
retainers to retreat, leaving the stag behind them. In this dispute, John
de Baliol of Barnard's Castle sided with the prior. Ralph must have
subsequently made his peace with the prior, since he presented a very
rich vestment to Durham Cathedral and was buried there, the first layman
to be so honored. "The first layman that ever had lycense to be buried
[there] was Raphe Lord Nevile alias Daw-Raby. . .and John Lord Nevile,
his sonne, with theire wives, whowas admitted to be buried in the body
of the said Church betwixt two pillersin the south angle of the same. .
.They had the honhour to be buried for thegreat battayle they wonne at
Durham, where they tooke David Kinge of Scots prisoner, and where his
brother was slayne, with many more of the nobility of Scotland, soe itt
may seeme that the Scots defaced their tombes in remembrance of that."
His tomb, although terribly mutilated by the Scottish prisoners confined
in the cathedral in 1650, which formerly stood in the now abolished
Neville chantrey, may still be seen between the pillars which divide the
south aisle from the nave.

Ralph, educated at Oxford, captured with his elder brother Robert, and
his 2 younger brothers Alexander and John at the Scots victory at the
Battle of Bannockburn 24 June 1314, was ransomed at crippling cost to his
father. Witnessed his elder brother "The Peacock of the North" Robert's
death in June 1319 atthe hands of Sir James Douglas (known as "The Good"
by the Scots, but also, especially by the English, as the "Black Douglas"
from his dark complexion) outside the walls of Berwick Castle in single
combat, a contest arranged in revenge for the killing by Neville and his
brothers the previous December of Richard FitzMarmaduke. [Burke's Peerage]

General Notes: Husband - Josiah Richardson
The Richardson Memorial by John Adams Vinton, 1876, Brown & Thurston Co.,
Portland, ME, page 59:
captain Josiah Richardson, eldest son of Lieut. Josiah and Mercy
(Parish) Richardson of Chelmsford; born there, May 5, 1691; m., first,
1712, Lydia ------. She died in childbed, March 28, 1737. Second,
Elizabeth French, of Dunstable; published April 1, 1738. She died Dec.
15, 1771.
He was an active, capable, business man. His name often occurs on the
Dracut records. He began to live in that town about 1710, when in his
twentieth year. His name is placed against lot No. 10, as taken by him,
under date of Jan. 2, 1710, probably 1710-11. At a general town-meeting,
held Oct. 27, 1712, leave was granted to him to be settled inhabitant in
the town of Dracut, onthe lot which his father--who died Oct. 17,
1711--took up with the consent of the committee of the General Court.
This lot, No. 10, was thus bounded: It had Merrimack River on the south;
the "Solomon lot" on the west; on the north and east it had marked
trees. It was one of the fifteen lots that lay between Mr. Belcher's
farm and Mr. Winthrop's farm, and near Walker's Brook, and was "the
thirtieth part of the undivided land required in the township of Dracut."
This description shows how sparsely settled Dracut was at that time.
Part of this lot he sold in 1712 to Joseph Richardson, his second
cousin, son of Thomas Richardson.
March, 1714, he was chosen surveyor of highways. March 1715, chosen
fence-viewer. In 1720, one of a committee of three to receive"the
money" (what money?) for the town of Dracut.
In 17287, he was one of the board of selectmen, and again in 1731. In
1752, town assessor, and town clerk; also in 1755 and 1756. In 1752,
town treasurer; again in 1753 and 1754.
In Oct. 1740, the town had recently built a meeting-house, and it was
voted that the man paying the highest tax on real and personal estate in
town should have the first choice of pew; the man paying the next highest
tax the second choice, and so on. CAPT. Josiah Richardson and the second
choice. The pews were not to be re-sold without the consent of the town.
His will is dated Aug. 17, 1773; proved Dec. 31, 1776. In the will he
calls himself "gentleman," and gives his dau. Hannah Hildreth fifty
pounds lawful money, in full of her portion. He then gives to his
granddau., Sarah Richardson, dau. of his son Josiah Richardson, late of
Dracut, deceased, twenty pounds lawful money. Then to his son Ephraim
Richardson 35.13.4., lawful money, this being the amount of a note signed
by the said Ephraim in favor of the testator; this to be in full of said
Ephraim's portion of the estate. To his son Moses, a deed ofland and
money. Next, to the children of his son David, late of Dracut, deceased,
land and money. Next, to his late son Jonathan, late of Dracut,
deceased, land and money. Next, to the children of his second dau.,
Lydia Cummings, late of Ipswich, deceased, he gives six pounds a piece.
Next, to his dau. Mercy Colburn, late of Dracut, deceased, to her
children, land and money.
The remainder of the estate, after the payment of the testator's just
debts and funeral charges, he gives in equal shares to his two executors,
Uriah Colburn and Obadiah Richardson. Uriah Colburn was his grandson,
son of his dau.Hannah. Obadiah Richardson was also his grandson, son of
his son Moses. All this is from a copy of the will, now before me.

Note: Sources are noted conservatively to allow the text to be more
readable as this is a family story and not a pure research project.
Information is documented as accurately as currently possible, but in
some cases the information is probable or possible—or sometimes
theoretical. Sources are noted within the book chapters and
referenced at the end of the book. The information is only as good as
the sources. In cases where researchers differ on their acceptance
of information, debate is included and the reader can decide for
themselves. This is a work in progress which will be further
researched as generation chapters develop. There may be some typos

General Notes: Wife - Margaret
Note: Sources are noted conservatively to allow the text to be more
readable as this is a family story and not a pure research project.
Information is documented as accurately as currently possible, but in
some cases the information is probable or possible—or sometimes
theoretical. Sources are noted within the book chapters and
referenced at the end of the book. The information is only as good as
the sources. In cases where researchers differ on their acceptance
of information, debate is included and the reader can decide for
themselves. This is a work in progress which will be further
researched as generation chapters develop. There may be some typos
and some misinformation due to invalid sources. Please send
