At the age of 16, James arrived in the new world with his Father, William, RIN 538, and family, on September 1, 1718, at Boston Harbor, on the ship “Maccullom”, amongst a fleet of five ships from Ireland that day. The passengers and ships reorganized and sailed for Casco Bay, Maine, between September 22-29, 1718. The family lived in the Merrymeeting Bay area of Maine for a few years, then removed to Hopkinton, Massachusetts. (See William Montgomery, RIN 538, for more details in notes.)
Lived in Hopkinton, Middlesex County, MA, between 1724 and 1737:
1. By 1724, his father, William Montgomery, was one of fourteen who, with a pastor, established Christ Church at Hopkinton, MA.
2. His sister, Abigail, would marry John Harper in (Christ Church) First Congregational Church of Hopkinton, MA, in 1728. (“In 1728, Rev. Samuel Barrot officiated the wedding of William's daughter, Abigail, to John Harper in the First Congregational Church of Hopkinton, MA”)
3. According to HENRY GENEOLOGY, page 72, by William Henry Eldridge, 1915:
Mary Henry, who married James Montgomery, was with her brothers, William Henry and Robert Henry, in Hopkinton, MA, by 1730/31; m. James Montgomery, 23 Jan 1732, n Hopkinton, MA; then the two Henry families and the James Montgomery family all moved to Blandford, MA, ca 1735.
4. According to the STEWART CLAN MAGAZINE, Vol. IV, No. 2, August 1925:
A. “John Stewart probably came from Ireland with the immigrants of 1718.” “He tarried a while in Londonderry, N.H.” and moved to Boxford, later moving to Hopkinton to join his brother (Walter) after the death of his first wife. He there remarried and was a blacksmith. He sold in 1737 to Peter Luce of Boston, “. . . He then removed to Blandford, a Scotch-Irish settlement called New Glasgow, in the western part of the state, in company with others from Hopkinton who had seceded from the church*.” “*On April 9, 1732, the (Congregational) church at Hopkinton voted the acceptance of the Cambridge platform, which gave great offense to the Scotch Presbyterians, and James Montgomery, Robert Cooke, William Henry, Walter Stewart, Robert Huston, John Hamilton, Robert Barrett and others absented themselves from communion and later organized a new church.”
B. Of Samuel Stewart: “. . . later appeared in Blandford, Mass., where in 1759 Samuel had a license as innholder on Beech hill, which adjoined the town of Granville: in 1761 he sold his lots in Blandford to James Montgomery.”
5. According to "Our County and Its People", by By Alfred Minott Copeland, as to the founding of the Village of Blandford:
On the formation of New Glasgow / Blandford, MA: "And whereas the said Christopher Jacob Lawton hath since purchased of the aforesaid commoners and proprietors all their several respective rights of, in and to the aforesaid tract of land except the rights of Josiah Sheldon and the heirs of Joshua Leavitt, deceased, of said Suffield, and hath agreed with Robert Senot, James Freeland, John Osborne, Hugh Harableton, Hugh Black, Comeinne Anderson, James Beard, Joseph Rice, Benjamin Woods, Samuel Karmer, James Montgomery, Armon Hambleton, Israel Gibbs, Robert Henry, Jonathan Boyce, James Wark, Robert Black, John Osborne, John Humbleton, Jeremiah Anderson, William Province, James MacCletick, Samuel Ferguson, James Freeland, Jr., John Houstin, Samuel Cook, Daniel Stone, Robert Houston, David Boyce, John Stuart, William Knox, Samuel Crooks, Samuel Tyger, William Anderson, William Barker, Samuel Wark, Alexander Osborn, Thomas Reed, Matthew Blair, Robert Cook, John Cockhoran, Robert Hambleton, Hugh Hambleton, Daniel Howe, Adam Knox, John Knox, Joseph Freeland, John Stuart, Robert Huston, Samuel Cook, William Dunaghoi, William Province, James Beard, John Cockran, Robert Hambleton, for the settlement of 60 families on said land in such manner and within such time as in the said proviso, in the aforementioned grant is contained and to whom the said Christopher Jacob Lawton hath covenanted to grant the several quantities hereafter mentioned, viz. : To fifty families 120 acres each, to two families 60 acres each, to five families 40 acres each, to one family 30 acres . . ."
"The people named in the above cited deed from Lawton to Brinley, were, for the most part, those who came to Glasgow from Hopkinton, Mass. It came about in this way: A Congregational church was organized in Hopkinton Sept. 2d, 1724. Seven of the original members of the church were Scotch Presbyterians, and five others soon after joined. As nothing was said at the outset about a form of church government, these men could conscientiously assent to the covenant and unite in Christian communion. April 9th, 1731, the church voted "to comply with the Platform of Church Discipline agreed to by the Synod of Churches assembled at Cambridge, 1649, as the rule of their discipline, so far as they apprehended it to be agreeable to the Word of God." This voting the church Congregational gave great offense to the Presbyterians. About ten families withdrew from the communion of the church. They were brought under discipline and eventually several of them excommunicated.
In 1734, they organized a Presbyterian church, built a small meeting-house about one and one-half miles west of the village, near what is known as the Ellery place. Subsequently, on the removal of many of these families to Blandford, this church organization was, by consent of Presbytery, transferred to that town, where it existed till 1800. The list of membership of the First Congregational Church in Hopkinton contains the names of those who were excommunicated. Of them are the names of Robert Cooke, William Dunaghoi, Robert Hambleton, Robert Huston, Hugh Black and his wife, William Henry, Matthew Blair, Sarah Montgomery, Robert Black, Jane Wark, Rebecca Wark, James Montgomery, John Hambleton, Adam Knox, Israel Gibbs, Mary Gibbs, Israel Walker, Mrs. Robert Sennet, Mrs. Robert Cook, Hugh Hambleton and wife, Walter Steward and wife, Mrs. J. S. Montgomery, Mary Hambleton, and these people went to Blandford, then called New Glasgow, and took their church with them. Tradition has it that they were promised a church bell from the city of Glasgow if they would call the town Glasgow, and continue that name.
In this tract of land the lots for settlers were laid out. Mr. Gibbs said that, "The settlers selected their farm lots, and the names of several families who obtained farms on the west side of the town street, are left on record, viz. : Messrs. Black, Reed, McClinton, Taggart, Brown, Anderson, Hamilton, Wells, Blair, Stewart, Montgomery, Boise, Ferguson, Campbell, Wilson, Sennett, Young, Knox and Gibbs. The majority of the above-named persons became permanent residents upon the lots they drew."
6. According to: "Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of the State of Massachusetts", by William Richard Cutter, William Frederick Adams, MA, 1910:
"In 1759 was the first year a school was taught by a female, as appears by the records: "Granted six pounds for schooling this year. Voted, Chosen Isreal Gibbs, James Montgomery, William Michel, to be committee to Hiar a School Deame, and so Dispurs the money Granded by the town to Defra the charges of the schooling, and to employ a school master when they think it will be Best for the town this year."
"In those days farm tools were of a very rude and primitive type. The method of harvesting was curoius, and tradition states that the laborers in the "North Meadow" - and expecially Isreal Gibbs - used a straight stick, which answered a three-fold purpose, that is as swath, rake and fork, and it was so awkward that it was then, and even now anything that is coarse, is called a "Gibb-sey".
". . . it appears that . . . that those Scotch settlers were as fond of spirits as their Anglo Saxcon neighbors. In 1756 it was voted, "That the town shall pay . . . the first cost for the Rum and sugar the Council shall Need while they Sit Hear.""
7. According to the book, "Taverns and Turnpikes of Blandford, MA 1733-1833" in describing the early settlement of Blandford, MA, tells the following about a very early Blandford road / rood / turnpike, "The road had been originally laid out coincident with the division line between the two tiers of first division home lots, but had to be shifted somewhat irregularly to the westward in order to avoid the ravine and brook running through it. The road is now spoken of sometimes as Falls road. A very early town lay-out of the road was on this wise: "Put to voat to see if the Town will establishthe Road South of the meeting hous beginning at the Northwest Corner of the Rev. mr mortons ortcherd as the road now goes to the west of the widoe Hamiltons House from thence as the road now Goes through widow Provans Land from thence as the Road now gos through the Land of James Campbls from thence through James and Robert M' Gomarys Land Said Rood to be three Roods wid.
In 1771, this road was somewhat minutely described in a county lay-out. On the course from Granville, after crossing "Pebbles Brook", it (the turnpike) was described as extending to a great rock in the middle of the River. Then climbing the steep hill, it ran by Robert Montgomery's fence to a heap of stones near a path in the field about 7 rods west of Montgomery's house, then north 42 perch (perch = 5-1/2 yards) to a great red oak six rods west of James Montgomery's.
The first Montgomery lived on the Lot first owned by Hugh Black (known in 1908 as the Osborne place). James occupied the next lot to the north. Not long after this, Robert Montgomery sold out his possessions there and moved up to Beech Hill, where he was living in the eighties (1780's) and carried on a retail license. James Montgomery had bought his lot of 1761 of Samuel Stewart who had an innholder's license . . ." Many times in these early records the surname was spelled, "Mt Gomery", and "Mongumery", etc.
From lists of Blandford Selectmen:
1747 - David Boies, Robert Wilson, Jas. Montgomery, John Stewart, John Hamilton
1758 - Robert Henry, John Knox, David Black, John Boies, James Montgomery
With his first wife, Mary Henry Montgomery, one of his children was born in Hopkinton, MA, and two in Blandford, MA. Of his second marriage to Kathren (?), two children were born in Blandford, MA.
General Notes: Wife - Mary Meary Henry
According to HENRY GENEOLOGY, page 72, by William Henry Eldridge, 1915; Mary Henry, who married James Montgomery, was with her brothers, William Henry and Robert Henry, in Hopkinton, MA, by 1730/31.
Married James Montgomery, 23 Jan 1732.
Then the two Henry families and the Montgomery Family all moved to New Glasgow, MA which became Blandford, MA, ca 1735.
General Notes: Child - Mary Montgomery
Probably died young.
General Notes: Child - Robert Montgomery
Lived in Blandford, MA - Land deeds: 1762-1787, Blandford, MA.
One book, "Taverns and Turnpikes of Blandford, MA 1733-1833", in describing the early settlement of Blandford, MA, explains the following about a very early Blandford road / rood / turnpike, "The road had been originally laid out coincident with the division line between the two tiers of first division home lots, but had to be shifted somewhat irregularly to the westward in order to avoid the ravine and brook running through it. The road is now spoken of sometimes as Falls road. Not long after this, Robert Montgomery sold out his possessions there and moved up to Beech Hill, where he was living in the eighties (1780's) and carried on a retail license (after his Revolutionary War service, 1779?). James Montgomery had bought his lot of 1761 of Samuel Stewart who had an innholder's license . . ." Many times in these early records the surname was spelled, "Mt Gomery", and "Mongumery", etc.
Revolutionary War Service: Under Colonel Mosley and Captain Sloper, Hampshire Company, he served as Tythingman, Blandford, MA, 1779. A Tythingman was the closest thing to a policeman, responsible for bringing law breakers to justice, with 10 members of the community under him / reporting to him with knowledge of offenders of the law. For purposes of Revolutionary War service, this duty performed by Robert during the War was considered Civil Service.
Revolutionary War Service: Under Captains Simon Lefever and Cornelius Newkerck, Lieutenants Johannis Blansham, Peter Osterhout, and Abraham G. Van Aken, and Ensign Aart Van Wagenin, he served three years in the "Ulster County, New York, Militia, (Land Bounty Rights) - First Regiment", from 1 March 1779 to June 1782. It is possible this Regiment never saw active duty as "Land Bounty Rights" Regiments were similar to a Reserve Unit, trained and ready to serve on active duty when called upon. "Land Bounty Rights" Regiments consisted of men mustered into the militia with up to 500 acres of Bounty Land as their reward for service.
"In the law named, "An act for settling the Militia of this Province, and the making of it useful for the security and defense thereof", which established the Militia, the following was prescribed and required of the foot soldier: "Every foot soldier must provide himself, and appear and muster with a good, well-fixed musket or fuzee, a good sword, belt and cartridge box, six cartridges of powder, a horn and six sizable bullets. At home, he must always have on hand one pound of good gunpowder and three pounds of sizable bullets." For want of these articles a fine of twenty shillings and prison charges were imposed till the fine was paid. At his discretion, the Captain was allowed and authorized to levy upon and sell the delinquent's goods." In case the offender be unable or refuse to pay, and he have no goods to distress, he shall ride the wooden horse, or be laid by the neck and heels in a public place for not to exceed an hour." No mention of compensation for military service was ever made, and when the number of articles which each soldier must furnish are taken into consideration, it will be seen that the tax was, by no means, an inconsiderable one. This was the condition of the Militia when the cloud of the Revolutionary War threw its shadow over the land.JAMES A. ROBERTS,ALBANY, N. Y., November, 1897. Comptroller"
At about the age of 40, in the late 1780's, he moved his family to Harpersfield, NY.
Lived in Harpersfield, NY; 1790-1799.
U.S. 1790 Census, shows the following for Harpersfield, NY, Lot No. 39:
Head of Household - Robert Montgomery
Free white males 16 and older: 2
Free white males under 16: 4
Free white females: 7
Robert, at age 60, and wife, Mary White, at age 59, reportedly moved their family to the Connecticut Western Reserve, in 1800, a year after their second son, Thomas, had moved there and had become the first permanent settler of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Thomas had landed at the mouth of a creek on Lake Erie in 1798, went back for provisions over the winter of 1798-99, and returned with his family, friend Aaron Wright and others to settle at the mouth of Conneaut Creek.
The Montgomery families helped found the town of Salem, later called Conneaut, Ashtabula County, OH, with the following son's families, daughter's families, and grandchildren, in 1800:
(Captain) James Montgomery - age 35, together with second wife, Mary "Polly" Baldwin, and three children*. Six more children born in Ohio. (*James' first wife, Mamre Gaylord, had died after two children were born to them in 1795, 1796. The first child, daughter Mary Jane "Mamre", was brought to Ohio with the two step-siblings from the second marriage; the second child, son Levi, was left with relatives in New York State. Levi later came to Ohio.)
Sarah (Sally) Montgomery - age 27, together with husband, Capt. James Harper, and four children. Five more children born in Ohio.
Henry Montgomery - age 25 (Married Margaret Dunbar, 1813, in Ohio)
John Montgomery - age 24, together with wife, Rhoda Norton - Married, 1796, in New York State
Levi Montgomery - age 20 (Married Elizabeth Woodworth, 1803, in Ohio)
Marian Montgomery - age 17 (Married Capt. Jesse Dunham Jackson, 1815, in Ohio)
Abigail Montgomery - age 15 (Married Aaron Noble, 1802, in Ohio)
Anna Montgomery - age 13 (Married Aaron Wright, 12 Mar 1800, first marriage in The Connecticut Western Reserve)
Eli Montgomery - age 11 - not known if he married
Calvin Montgomery - age 3
. . . a total of 20 people, joining Thomas and his family of six.
(Thomas Montgomery - age 32, had already moved in 1798, with wife, Rebecca Harper, and four small children. Ten more children born in Ohio.)
(Robert's son Rev. Robert Montgomery, age 28 in 1800, later came to Ohio, ca 1815-1817.)
The Congregational Church of Conneaut, OH, had its birth in Plymouth Massachusetts, in 1620. The Conneaut Congregational Church started in the home of Robert Montgomery in 1819. Congregationalism flourished in this area because of Rev. Joseph Badger who came as a missionary in 1801 and started many churches in the Western Reserve. (See Thomas Montgomery's 1814 Baptism by Badger.)
From "The History of Ashtabula County, 1894":
THE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH of CONNEAUT, OH
"The Congregational Church of Conneaut was organized April 14, 1819, at the house of Robert Montgomery. The services were conducted by Revs. Joseph Badger, Giles H. Cowles, and Ephraim T. Woodruff. The first members were Ebenezer Buck, Ada Buck, Robert Montgomery, Stephen Webb, Luther Jones, Mary Jones, Sarah Sanford, Mrs. Montgomery, Mrs. Julia Kennedy, and Miss Laura Buck.
The church was organized on the union plan of government, Congregational and Presbyterian. It was a Congregational church joined to a presbytery. It was changed into a Presbyterian church in 1835, and remained such until December 30, 1847, when it was unanimously voted to make its government purely Congregational.
The first church edifice -- the old brick church on Liberty Street -- was commenced in 1826, seven years after the church was organized. Religious services prior to this time were held in school-houses and private dwellings. The members were intensely interested in the project of building the church, and most of them made great sacrifices in order to accomplish it. The labor was interrupted for a time in consequence of lack of means, but a fund necessary to complete it was after a little realized from a sale of the seats. Services were held in the church before it was finished. The year 1828 witnessed its completion, and the year 1829 its dedication. The dedication sermon was preached by Rev. Luther Humphrey.
The new brick edifice, situated on the corner of Main and Buffalo streets, was erected in 1873, and finished in 1876. Sixteen hundred dollars were paid for the lot, and the building cost about eighteen thousand dollars. It was dedicated in the spring of 1877, Rev. Mr. Wolcott, of Cleveland, preaching the dedication sermon.
From 1829 to 1836 the following gentlemen officiated as pastors and ministers: Revs. Luther Humphrey, Olds, John Pettit, Maltbee (Methodist), Jesse Viets (Methodist), Kelsey, J. J. Bliss, John Keep, Wheeler, and William Whittley. Since 1836 the pastors have been Revs. William Fuller, two years; Norris Day, one year; John Hovey, three years; E. F. Dickenson, ten years; William Scales, four years; J. A. Woodruff, two years; Alvin Nash, three years; A. Bartlett, four years; and R. M. Keyes, the present pastor, nearly thirteen years. The present membership of the church numbers two hundred and sixteen."
On September 9, 1999, John and William Montgomery, g-g-g-g-g-grandsons of Robert, discovered the grave of this Robert Montgomery at the City Cemetery in Conneaut, Ohio, burial site C 03 96. An American flag was standing next to the grave to commemorate Robert's Revolutionary War service. To the north of Robert is buried his daughter, Sally (Harper). To the immediate south of Robert is buried his wife, Mary, and then his son, Eli.
Conneaut Star-Beacon, October 27, 1995:
"The graves of Robert and Mary lie in the shadow of "Big Red", a red maple that in 1993 was designated Conneaut's first landmark tree by the Conneaut City Council. The tree's proximity to the graves of early settlers helped it earn landmark status."
Curiously, Robert and Eli died on the same day, October 15, 1822.
Mary died October 9, 1804, as inscribed on their headstones.

Obituary: The Western Star, Thursday, February 10, 1921
Samuel Jefferson Witham was born near Union, Warren County, Ohio, April 13, 1853 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. Martin, West Carrolton, Jan 12, 1921, aged 67 years, 8 months, 29 days. He was the son of James and Mary Witham and was the 7th child of a family of nine children, 4 boys and 5 girls, all of whom, save three sisters, with their parents have passed to the home beyond. The surviving sisters are Mrs. W. W. Scott, So. Lebanon, Mrs. Jane Mckinney, Xenia, and Mrs. Frank Chambers, Kings Mills.
Deceased was united in holy wedlock with Mary M. Hensel, Batavia, Jan. 31, 1880. Together they lived in ideal companionship for over 20 years, and it was his greatest sorrow when she was taken from him by death.
Mr. and Mrs. Witham received into their home, as the gift of God, 4 children, one of whom, Bertha May died in infancy. Those surviving are Mrs. Arthur Wasson, Middletown, Mr. A. C. Witham, Dayton, and Mrs. Frank Martin, West Carrolton.
In early manhood he sought and found Christ as his personal Savior and united with the M.E. church. He was an active member of Loyal Lodge No. 794, I.O.O.F. Kings Mills, OH, having passed through the chairs.
He was faithful in all life's relations. As a workman he won the confidence and good will of his employers and fellow workmen. He was honest and conscientious in his work, charitable in word and deed, kind and affectionate. In the community he was familiarly known as "Uncle Sam."
For the past 4 years he has been in poor health, Two weeks prior to the end, his condition became serious. All that loving hands could do, was done, but to no avail.

General Notes: Child - Alexander Livingston 5th Load
1 - The 5th Lord Livingstone of Callendar was the Guardian of Mary Queen of Scots, and she spent much of her early life at Callendar House. It was at the House on the 4th September 1543, that the Scottish leaders decided to ignore the Treaty of Greenwich, under which the Queen was to marry Prince Edward, son of Henry VIII. Henry launched a series of border raids to punish the Scots for their impudence, and it was eventually decided to send the Queen to safety in France. Lord Livingstone went with her, and it was in France that he died.
2 - Alexander Livingston, 5th Lord Livingston of Callendar who was the guardian of the young Mary Queen of Scots. He married first to Janet Stewart and they had no issue. He married second to Agnes Douglas, daughter of John, 2nd Earl of Morton. Alexander Livingston, 5th Lord Livingston of Callendar died in 1553.
3 - the 'fifth Lord Livingston of Callendar' (successor to Alexander Livingston, Regent of Scotland in 1437)- Alexander was a guardian for Mary, Queen of Scots, and his daughter, Mary Livingston, was a childhood companion of and lifelong friend of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Master James Livingston who, as he is styled "Master", must have taken a degree in Arts at one of the Universities, probably the University of Glasgow. Unfortunately, there is a gap in the records of this university for the period between 1509 and 1536 which would have covered his student days.
James Livingston fought at the Battle of Pinkie (September 10, 1547) under the command of his relative, James Hamilton, Earl of Arran, and was there killed, as was also the Master of Livingston, his nephew.
IMPORTANT: This James Livingston must not be confused with other contemporary Master James Livingston, of which there are at least three:
Master James Livingston, Rector of Culter, Lanakshire.
Master James Livingston of Baldoran, a descendant of the Livingstons of Kilsyth.
Master James Livingston, chaplain of St. John the Baptist's Aisle, Falkirk Parish Church.
Died: September 10, 1547, slain at the Battle of Pinkie, near Edinburgh.

Sir James Livingston succeeded his childless uncle as 3rd Lord Livingston of Callendar in 1497. His wife, Beatrice Fleming, was the daughter of Robert Fleming, 1st Lord Fleming, who was a grandson of Robert Stuart, Duke of Albany and a great X 3 grandson of Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland. Through this line, our forebearers can be traced back to the ancient Kings of Scotland, Wessex, Gwynedd in North Wales, and Leinster in Ireland. Through Beatrice Fleming, the Sewells are also descended from Charlemagne the Great and the Dukes of Normandy; including such notables as Rolf the Viking Pirate Chief, Conan the Crooked and Sigurd "Snake Eye" Ragnarson, just to mention a few.
