FLAVIUS JOSEPHUS WITHAM That life is the most useful and desirable that results
in the greatest good to the greatest number, and, although all do not reach the heights to
which they aspire, yet in some measure each can win success and make life a blessing to
his fellow men. It is not necessary for one to occupy eminent public positions to do so,
for in the humbler walks of life there remains much good to be accomplished and many
opportunities for the exercise of talents and influence, that in some way will touch the
lives of those with whom we come in contact making them better and brighter. In the list
of Boone county's useful, helpful, successful and honored citizens, Flavius Josephus
Witham, has for a period of forty-five years occupied a prominent place and during that
long period he has been of much assistance in promoting the general welfare of his
locality and his individual efforts have been crowned with pronounced results, so that he
is deserving of our esteem in view of the fact that he is a good citizen, a gallant veteran of
the Union army, and a fine type of the self-made man, having forged his way to the front
from an early environment none too auspicious. In his record there is much that is
commendable and his career forcibly illustrates what a life of energy can accomplish
when plans are wisely laid and actions are governed by right principles, noble aims, and
high ideals. His actions have ever been the result of conscientious thought, and when
once convinced that he is right, no suggestion of policy or personal profit can swerve him
from the course he has decided upon. He has the reputation of doing his full duty in all
the relations of life, and he is thus entitled to the high respect which is universally
accorded him.
Mr. Witham, one of the most progressive and scientific agriculturists this section of
Indiana has ever known, was born in Warren county, Ohio, August 17, 1843. He is a son
of William and Mercy (Eaton) Witham, the father a native of the same county and state
as our subject, but the mother was born in New Jersey. William Witham was born
January 11, 1801, and died in Ohio, November 14, 1865; his wife was born May 6, 1803,
and died April 30, 1879. They were married in Ohio on April 24, 1823, the Eaton family
having removed to the Buckeye state when our subject's mother was young in years. The
paternal grandfather, Robert Witham and his brother, Norris, came from the state of
Maine and located in Warren county, Ohio, about the year 1779, being thus among the
early pioneers of that state. They were both young men, but courageously braved the
dangers of Indians, wild beasts and a wilderness, and developed farms, married and
reared their families in the new country west of the Alleghanies, which was at that period
little known to the people of the New England states. These brothers did much to forward
the march of. civilization on the frontier, were honest, hard working and successful
citizens, and there they both died, grandfather Witham reaching the advanced age of
eighty-seven years.
William Witham, father of our subject, devoted his life successfully to general farming in
Warren county, Ohio, and his family consisted of the following children, nine in number:
Sarah, born March 11, 1824, married Henry I. Bennett, were early pioneers of Boone
county, Indiana, and are both now deceased; William H., born August 19, 1825, married
Maria Scofield, who is living in Hamilton county, Ohio, he being deceased; Mary A.,
born December 27, 1827, married James F. Downing, were early settlers of Boone
county, and are both now deceased; Rebecca, born August 6, 1830, married John
Morgan, spent most of their lives in Ohio, but lived several years in Lebanon, Indiana,
and are now both deceased; Robert, born October 15, 1832, went west in 1853 with the
gold seekers of that period and nothing has ever been heard of him since, although he is
believed to be alive and still in the far west; Sylvester, born February 11, 1835, a soldier
in the Civil war, serving in the cavalry known in history as "Merrill's Horse," and was
killed by a sharpshooter, August 6, 1862; Ennis, born October 17, 1836, came to Boone
county with the subject of this sketch, his brother, in 1869, became owner of three
hundred and sixty acres of fine land in Clinton township, was a highly honored citizen,
remained single and died here in November, 1911; Martha. E., born October 27, 1838,
died February 16, 1851; Flavius Josephus, of this review is the youngest of the family
and is the only one now living, unless Robert is still alive.
Flavius J. Witham grew up on the home farm in Ohio and there did his share of the work
when a boy. He was compelled to work his way through school and is a self-educated
man for the most part, and has remained a wide reader and close observer all his life,
being thus an exceptionally well informed man. He remained at home until his marriage,
with the exception of his service in the army, the date of his wedding being August 31,
1865, and his bride was known in her maidenhood as Mary L. Duvall, who was born
December 25, 1846, in Ohio, and is a daughter of Jacob L. and Nancy E. (Jackson)
Duvall, natives of Ohio and Maryland, respectively, but were married in the former state,
where they spent their lives engaged in farming and there died, honored and respected by
their neighbors and friends. They were the parents of twelve children, nine of whom are
still living, all still residents of Ohio except John A. Duvall, of Clinton township, Boone
county; Jacob, who lives near Ft. Wayne; Mrs. Martha Bennett, who makes her home
with the subject of this sketch, and Mrs. Mary L. Witham.
Mr. Witham moved to Boone county, Indiana, in the fall of 1869, and purchased seventy-
nine acres, partly cleared, and on this he built a small shack, improved the land and six
years later, in 1877, built a splendid brick residence in which he still lives. He ditched his
land and he and his brother, Ennis, having purchased timbered land adjoining, assisted
him in clearing and developing it, sold and worked up the timber in various ways and
they both prospered with advancing years. Our subject, by the exercise of good judgment,
wise foresight and by close application and good management, became one of the most
successful and prominent farmers in the county. He added to his original holdings from
time to time until he is now owner of two hundred and twenty acres, all in Clinton
township, which he has placed under a high state of cultivation and improvement, making
it one of the choice farms of the county and on it is to be seen numerous commodious and
convenient outbuildings, in fact, everything about the place denotes thrift, good
management and prosperity. Formerly he was an extensive hog raiser and still feeds
considerable live stock for the market. Having accumulated a handsome competency and
old age coming on, although he is yet hale and active, he merely oversees his large
farming interests, having some time ago practically retired from business life. He keeps
most of his land rented. He is a heavy stockholder in the Lexington Life Insurance
Company of Lebanon, also has large investments in the Building and Loan Company of
Lebanon. He was one of the first stockholders of the Rural Loan Association of Boone
county, was also a stockholder of the old First National Bank of Kirklin, Clinton county,
Indiana.
Six children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Witham, only two of whom are living at this
writing, namely: Albert, born December 11, 1868, owns eighty acres in Clinton township,
Boone county, but is living at home and is a successful farmer; May B., born March 30,
1871, married Malvern Everson Dulin, and they have one child, Jessie, who was born
August 17, 1911; Leloy, born December 8, 1886, died December 29th of that year;
Gurley, born July 1, 1873, died April 30. 1891; Eva Ruth, born October 12, 1891, died
September 12, 1899; Laura Avis, born November 1, 1875, died February 22, 1900.
Politically, Mr. Witham was a Republican until the campaign of 1912, when he became a
Progressive. He has long manifested a deep interest in public affairs, but has never sought
office. He was one of the organizers of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows lodge at
Mechanicsburg, Indiana, but is no longer affiliated with the order. He and his wife have
traveled extensively in twenty-five different states. They are highly esteemed by their
neighbors and many friends, being noted for their old time hospitality and charitable
impulses, always manifesting a high Christian spirit in all the relations of life.
Mr. Witham enlisted for service in the Civil war on August 12, 1862, in Company B,
Seventy-ninth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, under Capt. John Cretors and Colonel Kennett,
and he proved to be a very faithful soldier, but was overtaken by illness in January, 1863,
which continued for some time, interfering with his active service. He is a member of the
Grand Army of the Republic, Rich Mountain Post, at Lebanon, Indiana.
Mr. Witham at one time offered the officials of Boone county the sum of ten thousand
dollars to be used for constructing an agricultural high school at Lebanon, also the sum of
twenty-five hundred dollars, the interest on which should be appropriated for prizes to the
students making the best records in domestic science and in growing agricultural
products, provided the county would donate seventy acres of land adjoining the city of
Lebanon on which the building was to stand and the work of the same to be carried on,
also an agricultural demonstration farm, but the proposition was rejected. Later our
subject offered to donate twelve thousand five hundred dollars cash if the county would
build a county hospital, providing the county officials would spend some thirty-five
thousand dollars additional on the hospital. This offer was also rejected. But both the
school and the hospital proposed by Mr. Witham are badly needed and a large number of
the county's most progressive citizens have expressed themselves as favoring each
proposition, and it is believed the county commissioners will in the near future take
appropriate steps in both matters. Mr. Witham is to be highly commended for his interest
in the betterment of his county.

Flavius Josephus Witham is an honored ex-soldier and respected citizen of Clinton Township, Boone County, Indiana. IN 1880 his grandfather, Robert Witham, immigrated from the State of Maine to Ohio. The legends all point to the Withams as of sturdy old English stock. Robert was born in 1768. Sarah Sipes was his wife, and they were married at Bullskin, Clermont County, Ohio. He bought of the Government 340 acres of land. The children born to this couple were William; Hannah, married a Patterson; Betsey, married a Todd; Samuel and James. His was a ripe old age viz, eighty-seven, and his wife seventy-eight. The father of Flavius J. Witham was William Witham, born January 11, 1801, in Warren County, Ohio, was reared as a farmer on his father's farm, and was married in 1823 to Mercy (Heaton) Witham, to whom were born Sarah, William H., Mary A., Rebecca, Robert, Sylvester, Ennis, Martha E. and Flavius J. He was known as a man of integrity, and, while not belonging to any church, he often remarked that he was ready to die when his time should come, and his wife was noted for love of peace and harmony. Until the breaking out of the war he was a Democrat, but afterward voted the Republican ticket. He died November 14, 1865. His wife Mercy (Heaton) Witham was born in the State of New Jersey, May 6, 1803. She was a great worker, and did the spinning, weaving and making the clothing for her large family. She was a loving mother, recognized by the neighborhood as a splendid type of womanhood. She was a member of the Universalist Church, and died April 30, 1879.
Flavius Josephus Witham was born in Warren County, Ohio, August 17, 1843. He enlisted August 12, 1862, in Company B, Seventy-ninth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was placed in the Twentieth Army Corps. He was a man that weighed 190 pounds, but was taken with the camp diarrhea, and was compelled to be in the hospital most of the time. He knew what the hardships of army life meant, and in the last hospital in which he was confined, in Tennessee, thirty of his comrades in thirty days were laid away in their last sleep. He came from the army a used up man, broken in health, and will suffer the remainder of his days. He was discharged January 6, 1863. On August 31, 1865, he was married to Mary L. Duvall. This union has been blessed with the following children: Albert, born December 11, 1868; May B., born March 30, 1871; Gurley, born July 2, 1873, died April 30, 1891; Laura A., born November 1, 1885; Leroy, born December 8 1886, died December 29, 1886; Eva R., born October 12, 1891. He is a farmer and has accumulated a property of 181 ½ acres, all in Clinton Township. He raises a great many hogs, besides doing a general farming business. He moved on this farm in 1869 by wagon, built a house, battened it, but never plastered, and there he lived for seven years. This was moved back for a wood house, and he erected a splendid brick residence, which is surrounded by large and commodious buildings, which denote a prosperous farmer. In 1858 Mr. Witham and Nick Bennett drove three cows from Clinton Township to Warren County, Ohio, some 160 miles, sleeping in bushes, and barns, living on the milk, and enjoying the trip, and what now would be considered hardship was called fun by them. He was a charter member of the Harte Lodge, No. 413, I.O.O.F., Mechanicsburg, Indiana, filled all the chairs, and twice has bee representative to the Grand Lodge. He is a member of Cyrus J. Long Post, No. 561, Grand Army of the Republic, Elizaville, Indiana He is an earnest Republican and votes as he shot. An iron constitution and an indomitable will have kept Mr. Witham about and at work, many even of his neighbors not knowing of the suffering he has endured, as, owing to his habits of push, pluck and constant hustling, he has not received the sympathy to which he is entitled. May he and his faithful wife live for many years to enjoy the fruits of their industry. His wife, Mary L. Duvall, was born December 25, 1846, in Warren County, Ohio, and received the common school education. She has had many of the blessings of life and is known as a faithful mother by her family. Her father was J. L. Duvall, who was born September 25, 2828, in Ohio, and married November 22, 1838. Their children were: Agnstus, Nimrod, Rebecca, Lucretia, Mary, Taylor, Martha, Sarah E., John A., Jacob, Nancy L. and Ruth. He was a farmer, but with his large family his hands were tied and he never accumulated much property. His children received as good an education as he could give them. He was a man that never went to law, and of a very meek disposition, sterling integrity and would suffer a wrong rather than commit one. The mother was a good woman, and her time devoted to the raising of her large family, so her hands as well as her heart were full. In 1866 she was widowed with six children, still at home; but she has managed to rear them all to fill good stations in life.

The Wyman Genealogy by John Howard Wyman, Wyman Organization at
http://www.wyman.org:
Elizabeth (Richardson) Wyman was the sister of three brothers who settled
in Woburn, MA. Her brother Ezekiel Richardson came to Boston in 1630 in
the Winthrop fleet with his wife Susanna (Bradford) Wyman. They were
original members of the First Church of Boston and on 11 Oct. 1632 they
were dismissed to the church in Charlestown when it was founded. The
brothers Samuel and Thomas Richardson came over some time before 1636
when they first appear inthe records of Charlestown and Boston. All
three brothers were members of the Charlestown church in 1638.

The Richardson Memorial by John Adams Vinton, 1876 printed by Brown
Thurston& Co., Portland, Maine (1876), pg. 183 - 184:
SAMUEL RICHARDSON, the 2nd of the three brothers of that name, who united
in the settlement of Woburn, was born in England, not far from the year
1610. We do no know in what year he came to this country. Possibly he
came with his elder brother, Ezekiel, in 1630, though this is not at all
probable. A list of fifty-eight men, inhabitants of Charlestown, dated
Jan. 9, 1633-4, is found on the records of that town. Among them is the
name of Ezekiel Richardson, but not Samuel or of Thomas, his brothers. A
similar list was made out, Jan. 1635-6, in which Ezekiel appears, but
neither of his brothers. The first notice we find of Samuel is dated
July 1, 1636, when he and his brother Thomas Richardson, with others,
were on a committee to lay out lots of land for hay. In 1637, the names
of Samuel and Thomas Richardson first appear in a list of inhabitants of
Charlestown. The same year the town of Charlestown granted to each of
them a "house-plot," clearly indicating that they had recently become
residents in the place. These two brothers were admitted members of the
church there, Feb.. 18, 1637-8, in consequence of which they were made
freemen of the colony, May 2, 1638. Samuel was chosen surveyor of the
highways, March 17, 1636-7.
Putting all these things together, it amounts to a certainty that while
Ezekiel arrived in June or July, 1630, his younger brothers did not come
till 1636. Ezekiel may have been twenty-five or thirty on his coming.
Samuel was probably four or five years younger.
The three brothers had lots assigned them, April 20, 1638, on "Misticke
side above the Ponds," that is, in Malden, and their names, among others,
appear as persons having the privilege of pasturing cows uponthe Common,
Dec. 30, 1638.
On the 5th of Nov., 1640. the three brothers andfour others, Edward
Convers, Edward Johnson, John Mousall, and Thomas Graves, were chosen by
the church of Charlestown as commissioners or agents for thesettlement
of a church and town, within what were then the limits of Charlestown,
but soon after erected into a separate town, and called Woburn. That
whole territory was then a wide, uncultivated waste. In the February
following, the commissioners built a bridge over the Aberjona River, as
the Mystic River is called, north of Mystic Pond. This bridge was known
in after times as Convers' Bridge, from Edward Convers, the proprietor of
the adjacent mill. He lived in the immediate vicinity, in the first
house built in Woburn. His descendants lived there, or in that vicinity,
and the entire locality is now in the heart of the town of Winchester.
When the church was constituted in Woburn, Aug. 14, 1642, O.S., Samuel
Richardson and his two brothers, with JohnMousall, Edward Johnson,
Edward Convers, and William Leonard, solemnly stoodforth, as the nucleus
around which the church was to be gathered.
The threebrothers lived near to each other, on the same street, which
has ever since been known as "Richardson's Row." It was by the town laid
out as a street in1647, and the three Richardsons are in the town book
represented as then living upon it.
Samuel Richardson was selectman of Woburn in 1644-1646, and 1649-1651.
In 1645, he paid the highest tax of any man in Woburn; Capt. Edward
Johnson the next.
His wife was Joanna------. It should have been mentioned that she
united with the church in Charlestown, on the 9th of the 7th month, or
Sept. 9, 1639.
He died, intestate, March 23, 1658. The inventory is dated March 29,
1658. His widow Joanna and eldest son, John, were appointed
administrators. [Midd. Prob. Rc., i. 142.] Lieut. John Wyman, of Woburn,
was appointed guardian of his sons, John and Joseph, June 25, 1658.

The Richardson Memorial by John Adams Vinton, 1876 printed by Brown
Thurston& Co., Portland, Maine (1876), pg. 504-506:
THOMAS RICHARDSON,was the youngest of the three brothers of that name,
EZEKIEL, SAMUEL and THOMAS, who united with Edward Convers, Edward
Johnson, John Mousall, William Learned, and others, in the settlement of
Woburn, and the formation of a church there, in 1641. The seven men,
whose names have just been written were the commissioners chosen by the
church in Charlestown, Nov. 5, 1640, to commence the settlement; with the
exception of William Learned was substituted soon after for Thomas
Graves, who had been chosen, but declined taking part in the enterprise.
It is believed that Samuel and Thomas Richardson, who were younger than
Ezekiel, did not come from England, till at least five years after. The
colonists suffered greatly from famine during the first year, and a few
came over till 1633 or later. A list of inhabitants of Charlestown,
dated Jan. 9, 1633-4, doesnot contain the name of Samuel or Thomas
Richardson. The same deficiency exists in a similar list, made one year
after. The first notice we find of either of these brothers, is dated
Feb. 21, 1636, when Mary, the wife of Thomas Richardson united with the
church in Charlestown. Samuel and Thomas Richardson joined said church
the 18th of the 12th month [February], 1637-8; in consequence whereof
they were admitted freemen of the colony, May 2, 1638. Their names are
found on the records of Charlestown for the first time in 1637, when to
each of them the town granted a house-plot, clearly indicating that they
had recently become citizens of the place. The same year, their names
arefor the first time found on the records as citizens of Charlestown.
They doubtless came from England together.
The three brothers were all young. They probably did not marry until
on the eve of embarking for America; Ezekiel in 1630; Samuel and Thomas
in 1635. This is inferred from the dates of the births of their children.
The three brothers had lots assigned them, April 20, 1638, on the
"Misticke Side and above the Ponds," that is, in Malden. The share they
had in the settlement of Woburn, and the organization of the church in
that town, has been sufficiently related in the notices already given of
Ezekiel and Samuel Richardson.
Thomas Richardson died in Woburn, Aug. 28, 1651. There is no will of
his on record. Below is an inventory of his estate foundin the
Middlesex Registry of Probate, dated Sept. 22, 1651, and signed by Edward
Johnson, Edward Converse, John Mousall and Samuel Richardson.
...Total 133.14.4 pounds
Further, the said Thomas Richardson died possessed of one dwelling
house, bard and one hundred acres of land, situate in the Town of Woburn,
of which 25 acres are plowed land, and ten of meadow. Real Estate valued
at 80.0.0 pounds.
Following the inventory, and, it would seem, a part of it, is this
statement:
"He hath left a wife, three sons, and four daughters. The eldest son
is 8 years old; the second, 6 years; and the third, three-quarters [of a
year]. The eldest dau. is 13 years old; the second, 11 years; the third,
4 years; the fourth, 2 years.
The name of the wife of Thomas Richardson was Mary. After his death
she became, Oct. 26, 1655, the second wife of Michael Bacon, senior, who
is said to have come from Ireland, and was on of theoriginal inhabitants
of the town of Woburn, 1641. He was the ancestor of the distinguished
Dr. Leonard Bacon, of New Haven, Ct. Bacon's first wife, also named
Mary, died July 4, 1688. His only son married a dau. of Thomas and Mary
Richardson.

Note:
Was a farmer in Sutton, where he settled in March 1730; when Michael Dwight, his father, executed a deed, "for love," etc., of two 30-acre lots to him of land lying in Sutton near the meeting-house, valued at L80. On this land he lived for many years; which is still, someof it, in the possession of his descendents. About 1775 he returned to Dedham to live--leaving his farm in Sutton in the hands of his children.
The only son of Michael Dwight to leave issue -- six daughters and one son, Timothy Dwight, b. 1742, d. 1769.

Stevens and his family have an impressive burial monument in the South Street cemetary in Belmont, right at the entrance. He was obviously quite wealthy, as his will set up various trusts in addition to leaving $50,000 plus property to daughter Abbie and multi-thousand dollar amounts to others. (per Peter Fifield Wells website Generation seven page 42 printed Jul 22, 1999)
General Notes: Child - George W. Fifield
George was mayor of Lowell, MA 1891-1892. He was named executor of his father's will, which included several trusts. A deposition on 19 May 1911 states that George has died without fully executing the terms of the will.
George was President and General Manager of the Fifield Tool Company, president of Appleton National Bank and Lowell Light Corporation, and a member of various civic groups. He was elected to the Board of Aldermen 1883-4 and was a congressional candidate in 1894. (per Peter Fifield Wells website generation seven page 43 printed Jul 22, 1999)

Any unsourced data has been gathered from various, and not necessarily reliable, sources. I know there are some duplications due to missing dates, but I am updating and correcting this as often as possible. So if you find errors/omissions/duplications, please let me know. The concept here is backwards to the norm, in that I'm entering everything I find, and gradually authenticating what I can. At the very least, I figure it might give others an idea of where to head as they search for their own authenticating data.
