The Richardson Memorial by John Adams Vinton, 1876 printed by Brown
Thurston& Co., Portland, Maine (1876), pg. 183 - 184:
SAMUEL RICHARDSON, the 2nd of the three brothers of that name, who united
in the settlement of Woburn, was born in England, not far from the year
1610. We do no know in what year he came to this country. Possibly he
came with his elder brother, Ezekiel, in 1630, though this is not at all
probable. A list of fifty-eight men, inhabitants of Charlestown, dated
Jan. 9, 1633-4, is found on the records of that town. Among them is the
name of Ezekiel Richardson, but not Samuel or of Thomas, his brothers. A
similar list was made out, Jan. 1635-6, in which Ezekiel appears, but
neither of his brothers. The first notice we find of Samuel is dated
July 1, 1636, when he and his brother Thomas Richardson, with others,
were on a committee to lay out lots of land for hay. In 1637, the names
of Samuel and Thomas Richardson first appear in a list of inhabitants of
Charlestown. The same year the town of Charlestown granted to each of
them a "house-plot," clearly indicating that they had recently become
residents in the place. These two brothers were admitted members of the
church there, Feb.. 18, 1637-8, in consequence of which they were made
freemen of the colony, May 2, 1638. Samuel was chosen surveyor of the
highways, March 17, 1636-7.
Putting all these things together, it amounts to a certainty that while
Ezekiel arrived in June or July, 1630, his younger brothers did not come
till 1636. Ezekiel may have been twenty-five or thirty on his coming.
Samuel was probably four or five years younger.
The three brothers had lots assigned them, April 20, 1638, on "Misticke
side above the Ponds," that is, in Malden, and their names, among others,
appear as persons having the privilege of pasturing cows uponthe Common,
Dec. 30, 1638.
On the 5th of Nov., 1640. the three brothers andfour others, Edward
Convers, Edward Johnson, John Mousall, and Thomas Graves, were chosen by
the church of Charlestown as commissioners or agents for thesettlement
of a church and town, within what were then the limits of Charlestown,
but soon after erected into a separate town, and called Woburn. That
whole territory was then a wide, uncultivated waste. In the February
following, the commissioners built a bridge over the Aberjona River, as
the Mystic River is called, north of Mystic Pond. This bridge was known
in after times as Convers' Bridge, from Edward Convers, the proprietor of
the adjacent mill. He lived in the immediate vicinity, in the first
house built in Woburn. His descendants lived there, or in that vicinity,
and the entire locality is now in the heart of the town of Winchester.
When the church was constituted in Woburn, Aug. 14, 1642, O.S., Samuel
Richardson and his two brothers, with JohnMousall, Edward Johnson,
Edward Convers, and William Leonard, solemnly stoodforth, as the nucleus
around which the church was to be gathered.
The threebrothers lived near to each other, on the same street, which
has ever since been known as "Richardson's Row." It was by the town laid
out as a street in1647, and the three Richardsons are in the town book
represented as then living upon it.
Samuel Richardson was selectman of Woburn in 1644-1646, and 1649-1651.
In 1645, he paid the highest tax of any man in Woburn; Capt. Edward
Johnson the next.
His wife was Joanna------. It should have been mentioned that she
united with the church in Charlestown, on the 9th of the 7th month, or
Sept. 9, 1639.
He died, intestate, March 23, 1658. The inventory is dated March 29,
1658. His widow Joanna and eldest son, John, were appointed
administrators. [Midd. Prob. Rc., i. 142.] Lieut. John Wyman, of Woburn,
was appointed guardian of his sons, John and Joseph, June 25, 1658.

SAMUEL RICHARDSON, third son of Samuel and Joanna Richardson; born in
Woburn, May 22, 1646; m., first, Martha------. Second, Sept. 20, 1674,
Hannah Kingsley, perhapsdau. of Samuel Kingsley, of Billerica. She was
slain, with her only child, scarce a week old, by Indians, April 10,
1676. Third, Nov. 7, 1676, Phebe Baldwin, born Sept. 7, 1654, dau. of
Dea. Henry Baldwin, of Woburn, by his wifePhebe Richardson, dau. of
Ezekiel and Susanna Richardson. She died Oct. 20,1679, aged 25.
Fourth, Sept. 8, 1680, Sarah Hayward, born 1655, dau. of Nathaniel
Hayward, of Malden. She survived her husband and died Oct. 14, 1717,
aged 62. The name was sometimes pronounced and written Howard. She died
about 1717, as her will has that date.
Samuel Richardson lived upon what has recently been called the Miller
Farm, on Richardson's Row, less than a mile north of the present village
of Winchester. He was a soldier in "Philip's War,"1675. In the afternoon
of April 10, 1676, he was employed in carting manure into his field,
accompanied by his son Samuel, a boy between five and six years old.
Looking toward his house he was surprised at seeing feathers flying about
it and other tokens of mischief within. He also heard the screams of his
wife. Apprehending that Indians might be there, he hastened home with his
gun, and there found two of his family murdered, viz., his wife Hannah,
who had lately been confined, and his son Thomas, twin brother to him who
had beenwith him in the field. On further search, it was found that the
infant, onlya week old, had been slain by the same ruthless hands. The
nurse, it appeared, had snatched it up in her arms upon the alarm of
danger and was making herescape to a garrison house in the vicinity;
could not save herself and the babe too, she let the babe drop, and the
Indians dispatched it at once. Mr. Richardson now rallied some of his
neighbors, who went with him in pursuit of the enemy. Following them some
time, they espied three Indians sitting on a rock, fired at them, killed
one, and drove the others away. [Sewall's Hist. of Woburn, p. 119.]
During this war, which lasted from June, 1675, to August, 1676, the
whole country was in continual fear and alarm. No man was safe in hisown
dwelling. Asleep or awake, at home or abroad, they were in constant
jeopardy. The movements of the Indians were secret and unobserved; they
lurked about in small parties, often only two or three, as in the
instance just referred to, and came upon people unawares. They concealed
themselves behind fences, crept into barns and other out-houses; they lay
in wait in the night before a man's door, ready to shoot him as soon as
he appeared in the morning. Noage or sex was spared. Twelve or thirteen
towns in Massachusetts, Plymouth colony, and Rhode Island were utterly
destroyed, and the inhabitants slaughtered or driven away. Other towns
were greatly damaged. About six hundred of theinhabitants, in great part
the flower and strength of the land, either fell in battle or were
ruthlessly murdered. Such a dark day, New England never sawbefore or
since.
Samuel Richardson died April 29, 1712, aged 66. His will is dated
Feb. 23, 1709; proved May 19, 1712; recorded Midd. Prob. Rec., xiii.68.
He mentions wife Sarah, eldest son Samuel, dau. Elizabeth Wyman, wifeof
Jacob Wyman, son Zachariah, dua. Sarah Richardson, dau. Hannah Pratt,
sons Ebenezer, Eleazar, David, Thomas and Jonathan, the last being a
minor. Hespeaks of his brother Stephen and John Vinton, their land
bordering on his own; of Joseph Richardson, jr., also, and Stephen
Richardson, jr., as his cousins, that is, nephews.

General Notes: Child - John Richardson
The Richardson Memorial by John Adams Vinton, 1876, pg 185-186:
Lieut. John Richardson, eldest son of Samuel and Joanna; baptized in
Charlestown, Nov. 12,1639 and douibtless born there, married, first,
when short of nineteen yearsold, Oct. 22, 1656, Elizabeth Bacon, b. Jan.
4, 1642, dau. of Michael bacon, one of theoriginal inhabitants of
Woburn. Second, at Cambridge, Oct. 28, 1672*, Mary Pierson, dau. of
Bartholomew and Ursula Pierson, at that time of Woburn, but previously to
1652, Watertown. Third, June 25, 1689, Margaret Willing, who d. Oct. 28,
1726.
Michael Bacon was of Woburn, 1641, selectman, 1659, 1665, 1666, 1670.
Bartholomew Pierson was of Watertown, 1640, freeman of the colony, 1648;
removed to Woburn, 1652; selectman, 1665-6; died March 12, 1687.
John Richardson passed his life in Woburn; was a yeoman; constable,
1675; a soldier in "Philip's War," 1675-6; freeman, 1678; selectman, 1690
and 1692; died, intestate, Jan. 1, 1696-7, aged 58. [Gravestone.]
*Rev. Mr. Sewall,in his History of Woburn, p. 634, says that Lieut. John
Richardson married Mary Pierson Oct. 28, 1673, one year after the date in
the text and the Cambridge record gives the same date, which Mr. Sewall
had evidently copied. The same error crept into Bond's Watertown
Genealogies, p. 910. Mr. Sewall says also that their son Pierson was
born Sept. 29, 1674. I follow the Woburn record and the transcript made
by Mr. Sewall for the town. If Pierson was born "22d of 7th month,
1673," as on the Woburn record, his parents, if honest people, must have
been married in 1672.

The Richardson Memorial by John Adams Vinton, 1876 printed by Brown
Thurston& Co., Portland, Maine (1876), pg. 186-187:
JOSEPH RICHARDSON, second son of Samuel Richardson, was born in Woburn,
July 27, 1643; married, Nov. 5, 1666, Hannah Green, born about 1647, dau.
of Thomas and Elizabeth Green, of Malden.
Joseph Richardson dwelt in Woburn; was admitted freeman of the colony,
May 15, 1672, and was therefore a member of the church. He was one of
Major Samuel Appleton's soldiers and was engaged in the fierce assault on
the Narraganset fort, Dec. 19, 1675. In that severe encounter six brave
captains fell, and eighty privates were killed. He was a selectman of
Woburn, 1693, 1694 and 1702.
He died in Woburn, March 5, 1717-18. His will is dated June 24m 1717;
proved April 22, 1718; recorded Midd. Prob. Rec., xv.143. He provides
very carefully and liberally for his "well beloved wife Hannah," and
among other things, that his son "Joseph shall find her a horse, and keep
the same for her use, and a man or himself to ride before her on Sabbath
days, or where she shall have occasion to go, all during her natural
life, if she remains my widow." He also mentions his five children, as
in the sequel. His widow Hannahdied May 20, 1721.

READFIELD, MAINE - EARLYSETTLERS - Readfield Historical Society:
Thaddeus Richardson
Three Richardson brothers helped settle Woburn, Mass. in 1640, having
come to Charlestown c1637. A century and a half later, around 1800,
Thaddeus, a blacksmith and great-grandson of Samuel Richardson, came to
Readfield with his wife Mary (Sanborn) and family. Their six children had
all been born in Limington, Maine between 1779 and c1798.
The first son, Thaddeus b.1779, married Sarah Blethen. Daniel, the
second son who never married, drowned in 1806. Fourth son, Asa was given
one half of his father’s homestead at the time of his marriage to Sarah
Cottle in 1817, but later moved to Augusta. Fifth son, Stephen, died
unmarried on the homestead in 1847. Youngest son Joseph is said to have
been a Congregationalist minister.
In 1808 the third son, Ebenezer, married Relief Eatona Readfield native.
Ebenezer was a farmer and raised his family of seven children in
Readfield. Two died young, four moved out of state, and the youngest,
George Frost, farmed on the Sadie Dunn Road. His home is what we call the
Jesse Welch house today. Some older Readfield residents remember there
used to be an old blacksmith shop nearby. George Frost Richardson married
Abby A. Jose of Readfield and their three children were Hattie b.1859,
William M. b.1860 Georgie May b.1872. Georgie married Louis S. Johnson
of Mt. Vernon. They carried on Ebenezer’s farm, and had one daughter,
Mabel Johnson.
Louis Johnson was the son of Edwin and Amelia (McVane) Johnson. Their
home, which wasbuilt by Theodore Marston before 1790, was located on the
Fogg Road, just over the Readfield / Mt. Vernon town line. The Johnson
house had been unoccupied for many years when it mysteriously burned
earlier this spring (1999).

THEOPHOLIS RICHARDSON, son of Ezekiel and Elizabeth (Swan) Richardson
of Woburn; born there, Jan 7, 1691-2; m. in Watertown, April 24, 1711,
Ruth Swan, dau. of Gershom Swan, probably a relative of his mother's.
He lived in Woburn, or perhaps latterly in Stoneham and died in the
autumn of 1723, in his thirty-second year, as is apparent from the
inventory. The Probate Record says that "he died at Charlestown--i.e.,
in Stoneham, then part ofCharlestown--'Charlestown End'-- on his return
from his majesty's service atthe eastward." The explanation is, the
Indians in Mai8ne, instigated by Sebastian Rasles, the French and Jesuit
missionary at Norridgewock, who was in close correspondence with the
governor of Canada, had since the year 1722 beencommitting great ravages
on the English settlements. They had captured nine families at Merry
Meeting Bay in June, 1722; had burned Brunswick, and had taken sixteen
Massachusetts vessels at Canseau. In the spring of 1723, they ravaged
Falmouth, Scarborough, Berwick, Wells, York and Dover. The government of
Massachusetts had sent a force against these savages. Theophilus
Richardson was one of the men sent, and died soon after his return. This
war lastedtill Dec., 1725, and included the famous "Pigwacket Fight," in
May, 1725.
The inventory is dated Dec. 12, 1723. It includes only personal
estate, and amounts but to 13.19 pounds. This shows that the family had
become poor. Thewidow makes oath that this is "all she knows of
estate," and she has to "support herself and five small children, all
sick at home of the feaver." Of the three sons named below, Deacon
Nathan Richardson, their father's cousin, was appointed guardian Nov. 30,
1733, and held a small amount of property in trust for them.
Col. Edmund Goffe, of Cambridge, was appointed administrator March 23,
1724-5.
Ruth, the widow of Theophilus Richardson, was m., April 6, 1726, to
Ebenezer Parker, of Stoneham.

Chenery, bapt. May 19, 1728, dau. of Ebenezer and Ruth Chenery, of
Watertown.
He was a tailor by trade. At the time of his marriage he was said to
be ofCharlestown, but his two oldest children were born in Woburn, at
least theirbirths are recorded there. After marriage, or from
1764-1771, he was an innkeeper at Watertown. He occupied the house at
the junction of Belmont and Mount Auburn Streets, since known as Bird's
Hotel. It is said that the house is now standing and occupied by Joseph
Bird, jr. He afterwards resided in Lincoln, near Watertown and once a
part of it.
He died in Lincoln, in 1797, aged 80. His will, dated 1785, proved
June 14, 1797, designates him as "innholder of Watertown," and leaves his
property to wife, Abigail, and the children. The widow Abigail died in
Lincoln, Aug. 25, 1814, aged 87.

THOMAS RICHARDSON, second son of Thomas and Mary Richardson; born in
Woburn, Oct. 4, 1645; m., first, in Cambridge, Jan. 5, 1666-70, Mary
Stimpson. There were married by the eminent Daniel Gookin, so often
mentioned in the early history of Massachusetts. In those days,
marriage, being regarded as a civil ordinance, was performed by the civil
magistrate. The town records of Cambridge, as copied, call Thomas
Richardson's wife Mary Stevenson. She died June 7, 1690, the mother of
nine children. Second, in Billerica, Dec. 29, 1690, Sarah Patten, widow
of Thomas Patten, of Billerica, who died Jan. 16, 1689-90, aged about
54. They were married by Major Jeremiah Swain.
He removed from Woburn to Billerica, previously known as Shawshin,
about the year 1667; and settled, it is believed, on a large tract of
about nine hundred acres of land, quite in the easterly part of the town,
called the Cambridge School Far, a little west of the Shawshin River, and
north of the present Boston Road. He was a soldier in the company of
Capt. Samuel Gallup in the land expedition to Canada, by way of Albany in
1690, with utterly failed. He was a deputy from Billerica to the General
Court of Massachusetts in 1703 and 1704.
Some time after, he gave to his eldest son,Thomas, a farm near the
Boston Road, now Washington Streety; to Andrew, a farm north of Thomas
and to Nathaniel, a farm north of Andrew. The deed to Andrew is dated
Oct. 14, 1705, and there is a deed to his grandson Thomas, son of Thomas,
dated Feb. 25, 1709-10.
He died in Billerica, Feb. 25, 1720, in his seventy-six year. His
widow Sarah died Nov. 20, 1734

NATHANIEL RICHARDSON, third son of Thomas and Mary (Stimpson)
Richardson; born in Billerica, Mass., Jan. 25, 1679-80; m., Mary Peacock,
May 7, 1703. They were married by Rev. Samuel Whiting, minister of
Billerica from 1663 to 1713, fifty years.
His father gave him, not long after marriage, a farm in Billerica,
contiguous to that of his brother Andrew. After his father's death,
1721, he received from the estate, thirty-two acres of upland, on Content
Plain, and about eight acres in Mill Swamp, at a place called Black Hole.
He died, intestate, April 4, 1753, aged 73. Mary, his widow, died Oct.
18, 1756.

JONATHAN RICHARDSON, fourth son of Thomas and Mary (Stimpson)
Richardson; born in Billerica, Feb. 14, 1682-3; married, 1718, HANNAH
FRENCH, dau. of John French of Billerica.
He passed his life in Billerica. As already mentioned, he went to
Dunstable and Groton, as a soldier, in July 1706. His father, during his
life, gave him property to the amount of fifty pounds. He is mentioned
in his father's will, dated April 10, 1719, as then living. "He died
suddenly, Aug. 13,1720," says the town record. In the agreement of the
father's heirs, made Feb. 25, 1721, he is spoken of as deceased, and in
the settlement of the estate the minor children of Jonathan are
represented by William French, jr., who must have been their mother's
brother, son of John, and grandson of William French, born in England,
1604, one of the founders of the town of Billerica.
He left no will. Administration of his estate was granted to the
widow, Jan. 9, 1720-1. Samuel Dunton, of Reading, born 1688, was the
surety of the bond given by the administratrix. The widow Hannah became
the wife of Benjamin Frost previous to 1738.

5186. Hannah, b. April 2, 1714; m. John Abbott, of Billerica, Dec. 30,
1735.

Cause of Death:<CAUS> killed by lightening
Mail from Janis (Gray) Nelson:
(about Thomas' brother-in-law, John C. Chase):
"June 26, 1896: J. C. Chase was at the depot Wednesday morning ready to
take a train for the (GAR) encampment at Northfield, when he received a
message containing the sad news that his wife's brother, Mr. Thos.
Richardson, together with his wife, had been killed by lightning on
Monday evening at their home in Newell, Iowa, for which town the
immediately departed."
"July 3, 1896: Mr. and Mrs. J. chase returned from Newell, Iowa, on
Tuesday where Mr. and Mrs. T. Richardson were buried on Friday last. Mr.
Chase reports the sad affair as a strange phenomenon of the lightning
freaks. It appears they were sitting on a lounge looking over a paper
together when the bolt struck the roof and followed the rafter and joist
in line with them, entering their heads and killing them instantly. A
daughter 18 years of age, was in the room at the time and was uninjured;
the stormdid no damage elsewhere in the neighborhood (this is not true
according to the Newell newspaper."
From The Newell Mirror, Newell, Iowa, June 26, 1896:
Killed by Lightning-During the severe storm on Tuesday evening, June 23,
at about 6:45 o/clock, Thomas M. Richardson and his wife, Ardella, who
were living in W. A. Hanke's residence in the eastern part of town, were
struck by lightning and instantly killed. Mr. and Mrs. Richardson were
sitting on a sofa, leaning against the wall, in the southeastern corner
of the sitting room. One of the daughters, Laura, was sitting in the
same room and the other, Sadie, was in the bed room. The lightning came
down between the husband and wife, as evidence of its deadly power was
visible on one side of the husband's face and the other side of the
wife's. Their clothing and the sofa were set on fire. Neighbors wre at
the house in a few minutes and did all in their power forthe living and
the dead. Laura Richardson had succeeded in putting out the fire before
help arrived, burning her hands badly in doing so. Neither of the
daughters who were at home were injured by the lightning. The sad news
was borne to Miss Florence Richardson, who is teaching north of town, and
Mrs.Richardson's father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Crockett and her
son, Bert Lewis, were summoned by telegram from Storm Lake, arriving on
the 8:30 train.

If you are interested, I am a descendant of the Willis Family, Ellen
Richardson's ancestors. The 19 year old mentioned in your information
married David D. Smith. She was interviewed when she was 98 years old
and some of what she says in her interview doesn't agree with some of the
other history. If you areinterested in the Willis family we could

RICHARDSONS:
In the former part of this volume, especially on pp. 239, 298, 299,
405, 406, statements occur which are incorrect and mroe which are
imperfect. Ihave given them a careful revision and by the help of
records supplied to meby Mr. Nathan H. Richardson, of Fitchburg, have
made the needed corrections in the pages which follow.
There was an emigration from Woburn and Stoneham toAttleborough
between the years 1710 and 1721. Among those who removed were four
brothers, sons of Stephen Richardson, viz.: William Richardson, Francis
Richardson, Timothy Richardson and Seth Richardson, and their nephew
Jonas Richardson.

On May 20, 1657, Abigail Davis petitioned the Assembly, alleging that her step-father John Cowdall and her mother had f orced her into marriage with Richard Ussell, and later in the same year the Assembly declared that the marriage was unl awful and that she was free to marry Edward Richmond, whom she declared in her petition to be her choice.

The Kin g's troops against Cromwell's troops. John's brother Henry fell into the tradition of support for the King, while Joh n returned to England with the Americananti-Royalist beliefs. John had left a family in England with at least two son s and had started another in America, were he left three daughters when returning to join Cromwell. John, due to his fa mily standings was commissioned a Colonel in Cromwell's Roundheads. After the Battle of New-bury, when there was a trad itional truce to care for the injuried, Henry got word that John was nearby and entered the enemy camp on the evening o f 20 Sept. 1643 under a truce flag to speak to his brother. When Henry appeared at the tent door of a tired and sleep y John wearing a King's Royalist uniform -- John shot and killed his brother Henry before he could identify himself.. In 1658, as part of his negotiated released, John accepted an arranged m arriage by one of his relatives in Virginia in order to return to the America Colonies and his American family. This wo uld indicate a relation -ship between the early Richmond family of the South and North in the American Colonies. Once r eleasedfrom prison, he decided to instead returned to Taunton Mass. and there lived with his daughter Sarah until his d eath in 1664 at the age of 70. Their section of Taunton is still called "Richmond Town". His male child John jr. left i n England moved to America in the 1650's and started the Northern Branch of the Richmond Family. He married twice--- th e first to Susannah Hayward of Bridgewater with whom he had four children. His second marriage was to Abigail Rogers, g randdaughter of Thomas Rogers of the Mayflower fame.

Richmond Castle continued to decline throughout these years. Although little remains of the original sections, some mas onry dating back to thelate 1000's can be seen along the Eastern Wall, its occasional"Herringbone" courses are conspici ous. In the southeastern corner of the castle stand the Gold Hole tower and the Scolland's Hall. The latter hall receiv ed its name from Scolland, the sewer to the first Earl of Richmond, Roaldus. A sewer, in medieval times was a househol d office of rank in charge of serving the dishes at the banquet table. Scolland's Hall, what remains of it, is a good e xample of the period's architecture. Through its basement is the entrance to the Cockpit or Second Court, which is encl osed by masonry walls of the late 12th century. There is a legend that Richmond Castle and Easby Abbey are connected b y an underground passage. Many years ago when soldiers where stationed at Richmond Castlethey found the passage in th e Castle cellar. The soldiers persuadeda young drummer boy to march down the passage beating his drum. The soldiers abo ve ground could hear the beat of his drum and followed it along the river bank and through the streets of the Borough o f Richmond. The sound became faint and eventually stopped not far from Easby Abbey. The drummer boy was never seen agai n and no one knows what became of him. The people of Richmond were sadden-ed by what had happened and erected astone mo nument to his memory above the spot were his last drum beat washeard.

There is no specific authority for the statement that he had a wife before Abigail Rogers; but the inscription upon he r gravestone makes her age eighty-six at her death, August 1, 1727: that would fix her birth at 1741; so she would hav e been only thirteen years old when Mary was born. Dees of the land of John Rogers show that Joseph Richmond was the so n of Abigail. It is probable that John Richmond had a previous wife, who died in 1662, and that he married Abigail Roge rs early in 1663.
...
He was Constable, member of the Town Council, Commissioner and Surveyor. His residence at "Neck of Land" was about thre e-quarters of a mile from the "Green" or Center. He and his wife are buried there.
He was a distributor, in March, 1677, of L10, being Taunton's apportionment of L363.3s. "Irish Charity," sent from Dubl in, Ireland, in 1676, "to distressed sufferers" by King Philip's War, and apportioned among the people of forty-seven t owns. John Richmond was a member of every important committee in Taunton for the purchase, division and settlement of l and and other matters of public interest. He was interested in several extensive purchases of land from the Indians i n both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Concerning one purchase for the town of Taunton is the following record: "On 25t h May, 1680, Town voted to accept what the committee had done, &c., concerning settlement of our lands." John Richmon d took his share "on rights that was his father's, and on rights that was Mr. Francis Doubty's (Doughty)."
