General Notes: Child - Moses Parkhurst
Moses Parkhurst, Application S38293. Enlisted in July 1779, (at the age of 16), for 9 mo. under Capt. Japheth Daniels and Col. Nixon on the MA line. Enlisted again in Mar 1780 for 3 years under Capt. Walden, discharged 9 Jun 1783. His discharge was signed by George Washington. He was honored with the badge of merit for three years faithful service. At one time he was a resident of Thompson, Windham Co., Conn. He also lived in Franklin, Norfolk Co, MA. In 1818 he stated he had a wife and two children, William aged 8 and age 4 mo.
Moses is not listed in the GPI because it is not clear who his parents were (From Peter's extraneous files we find the following) It is suspect that his mother may have been Lydia Parkhurst, daughter of Isaac Parkhurst (1708-1789) and Lydia Bigelow. Lydia was engaged to Ebenezer Wood of Upton, MA. There was a marriage intention, but no marriage. Moses was probably the Moses Parkhurst from Mendon/Milford MA, he married Catherine Hucker, daughter of William and Abigail Hucker, 11 Oct 1787 in Franklin, Norfolk Co., MA. There are four children listed: Nelly b 9 Sep 1790, in Bellingham, Suffollk Co., Ma, she married Ezekiel Bellow, circa 1809; Jotham, b. 9 Mar 1798, he married Amelia Adams, 8 Aug 1824, in Mendon, they had 7 children; Horace, d 26 Dec 1833, in Mendon and daughter Parkhurst, could this be Sophia?

Nathaniel Parks was enlisted by Cap tain Peter Campbell for his company in
the
3rd Battalion, New Jersey Volunte ers (known as Skinners Greens) on 6
June 1778. Joseph Parks enlisted as a s ergeant in the same company and
battalion and on the same date, except that h e was enlisted by Lieutenant
Bartholomew Thatcher. Both Campbell and Thatche r were from Hunterdon
County, New Jersey and the dates of enlistment of the m en in their
company suggest that the men were enlisted during the British mar ch from
Philadelphia to Sandy Hook.
In the muster of August 31, 1778 howev er, Nathaniel Parks is listed as the
sergeant and Joseph Parks as a private, i n now Captain Bartholomew
Thatcher's
Company. This was the same company asb efore, except Peter Campbell did
not
have the command, as there was much con fusion over his eligibility for
rank
over reasons not necessary to cover her e.
In October of 1778, Joseph Parks participated in the successful raids on
Egg
Harbor, New Jersey under Captain Patrick Ferguson and the subsequent
sur prise
of Pulaski's Legion.
Both Parks sailed with the expedition to take Sava nnah, Georgia, which was
effected on 29 December in 1778. They subsequentlyto ok part in the
Franco-
American Siege of that city in September/October 1779 . They were both
listed
as sick in quarters on November 29, 1779, Josephnow promoted to corporal,
both still serving in the same company and battalion.
Both Parks continued in this situation through 1780 and into 1781. During
tha t period the battalion march in July of 1780 from Savannah to Augusta,
Georgia , and shortly thereafter to Ninety Six, South Carolina. At Ninety
Six
there were numerous small expeditions and skirmishes, which they may have
takenpart in. They took part in the Siege of Ninety Six by the Rebel
forces
under Ge neral Nathanael Greene through May and June of 1781, and the
immediate evacua tion of that post after the lifting of that event. They
also took part in th e very bloody Battle of Eutaw Springs, South
Carolina, on 8 September
1781, surviving apparently unscathed. At this time they were serving in
the
same company but the battalion had just been renumbered to the 2nd. This
was
due to the "old" 2nd battalion being under strength and drafted into the
1st
an d late 4th battalions.
The two Parks were in their same situation, company a nd battalion at
Charlestown in the April 1782 muster. They would continue the re until the
city was evacuated by the British in December of 1782, when they sailed
back
to the British garrison at New York. Joseph Parks was sentwith an
advance
party of the battalion to Nova Scotia with the fleet in theSpring of
1783.
There he remained until joined by Nathaniel and the rest ofthe bat talion
that
did not take their discharge at New York. The battalionwas disb anded on
10
October 1783 and they were discharged on that day. That's all I can tell
you
on them, other than bot

The Perlier family were from Staten Island, but, after the father's death
in 1723, the family, like many of their neighborns removed to New
Jersey. They came by way of Perth Amboy, the Raritan and Millstone
Rivers, and thence the brances of said rivers into Hunterdon Co. The
Perliers were found in Amwell Township, and we believe this is where
Nathaniel met and married Elizabeth Pe rlier. Her brother Peter Perlier,
also, met and married Lydia Robbins in Amw ell, as the Robbins family
lived there also.

General Notes: Husband - John Wyman
one of the eleven sons and two daughters of Seth Wyman., Col. John as
born on Oct. 25, 1786. Recorded events of his early years and education
seem to benonexistent, but in the year 1807 he was working in the firm
of Dickman and Wyman, which was a combination of grocery and tavern. This
was located on thecorner of Main and W. Front Street in Skowhegan, now
known as Sturch's Grocery (1960).
On June 24, 1811, a piece of property on the corner of Elm and Madison
streets, Skowhegan., was bought by John's father, Seth, from the Kennebec
Proprietors.
This early pioneer apparently showed no partiality to his sons since
they all seemed to benefit by his generosity. This newly acquired piece
of property was deeded on Mar. 28, 1818, to his son John
and a building was erected there in which he set up a new business. This
building stood on the land where later the Hotel Coburn was built. In
this building, which was named the Old Red Dragon Inn, John conducted the
post office for the 'Northside', then called Canaan, as well as a grocery
and an inn, It is recorded that John's grocery business was carried on so
largely on a credit basis that, during the difficult years following the
war of 1812, collections became so poorthat he could not meet his
obligations and was forced to close out. He kept the tavern, however,
and gradually was able to settle with his creditors.
John had married in 1809 Mary Spaulding Parlin, the daughter of a near
neighbor, Jonas Parlin. She was born Mar. 61 1789.
The title, Colonel, was given to him in 1821, John having been a
captain in the Militia in 1816, a major in 1818 in Lt. Colonel Waugh's
regiment, when he was called to the colors in 1814.He served also as
quartermaster and adjutant in the Maine Militia.
Col. Johnheld many public offices during his life-time -- a fact which
speaks well for his character and popularity in his community. In
1814-1815 he was Town Treasurer and Town Moderator. Representative to the
General Court of Massachusetts for 1815-1818 and to the Maine Legislature
in 1821 gave him honor beyond his town. Family tradition has it that
John and his brother Asa, the publisher of
Skowhegan's first newspaper, were the only Democrats of the family; he,
Levi, and Seth, Jr., were the Masonic members among the eleven brothers.
During the last year of his life, Col. John, deeded his property to
these same two brothers, and on the same day Seth transferred his share
to Levi who managed the tavern for a few more years. John died in April
1842.
The children of John and Mary Parlin Wyman were:
John, Jr., b. 1810, m. Nancy Davis, No children.
Mary Anne, b, 1811, m Chas. Bodfish. ch, Chas, died young.
Gustavus Levi, b. June 22, 1813 m. Sept. 16, 1839, Julia Ann Comins.
Roxana Frances, b. 1817., m, Cyrus Bodfish., 1 ch. died young.
Jonas Parlin, b. 1822, m. TriphosaHoeldns 1ch. died in infancy.
Josiah Morrill, b. 1823, d. in infancy.
The sons, John, Jonas, and Gustavus were buried in Skowhegan the girls
in Fairfield.
Gustavus Levi was a farmer whose home was in Norridgewock near the town
line between that community and Skowhegan. The farm was located where
the Women's Reformatory is now. His wife, Julia Anne Comins, born in
Charlton, Mass., was a well-educated girl for her time. On one occasion
she went to visit asister, Lucy Richardson (later married to Rev. Lucius
Page) in Norridgewock,where she
met Gustavus Wyman, to whom she became engaged. She arrived in
Norridgewock alone, having come by stagecoach, bringing with her a lovely
hand-made trousseau, and was presumably married there Sept. 16, 1839.
These Wymans had only two children sons Charles Bowman born May 29, 1840,
and Edward Gustavus, born Nov. 21, 1842, in Norridgewock. Some years
later, Gustavus took his family to Bangor where most of the descendants
continued to live.
Edwardbecame an employee of the First National Bank for

!Graduated from Yale in 1787, and in 1790 he moved to the Genesee country of western New York. He purchased a large tract of land in what is now the town ofGeneseo, NY. He was one of the wealthiest land proprietors in the state. He printed and circulated at his own expense, publications on the subject of education; employed persons to lecture on that topic, and offered premiums to the towns which first established school libraries. As early as 1811, he proposed the instituting of normal schools. He procured the enactment of the school law library in 1838; founded a library and institution for scientific lectures at Geneseo, and endowed it with $10,000, and in his sales of land always stipulated that a tract of 125 acres in each township should be granted free for a church, and another of the same size for a school. His donations to the causes of education and religion exceeded $90,000. (Taken from Appleton's New Encylopedia.)
