Benjamin bought land from Benjamin Thompson, lot #6, which he clearedandit became his lifelong home. The deed was dated 6 May 1763. A house hebuilt on the property was still standing in 1935 and in good condition.Benjamin operated his father's shipyard, and was a member of thecommittee of inspection and safety during the Revolution in 177 inBrunswick, Maine. He signed the Association Test at New Meadows, Maine,md. 29 November 1752 at Georgetown.
The Association Test reads as follows: "We the subscribers do herebysolemnly engage and promise that we will do the utmost of our power, atthe risk of our lives and fortunes with arms, oppose the hostileproceedings of the British fleets against the United American colonies."

FROM THE BOOK "RIDEOUTS OF AMERICA"
Benjamin Rideout was a resident of Brunswick, and while there enlisted inMay, 1775, served as a private in Captain James Curtis' Company, ColonelJames Cargill's Massachusetts Regiment, marched from Cambridge to DeerIsland, Penobscot Bay, where he was assigned to be stationed and wasdischarged in Dec., 1775, having served eight months. He again enlistedin March, 1776, served as a private in Captain William Lithgow's Company,Colonel Mitchell's Massachusetts (Maine) building forts anddoing guardduty. Length of this service was nine months. His army number was W.24754.
He was allowed pension on his application executed July 26, 1832, whileresiding in Bowdoin, Lincoln County, Maine, where he had then resided forabout fifty years.
He died August 3, 1833, in Bowdoinham, Maine.
The soldier married October 11, 1776, at Brunswick, Massachusetts(Maine), to Meriam Stover. Their marriage was recorded on the records ofthe town clerk of said Brunswick.
Soldier's widow, Meriam, was allowed pension on her application executedAugust 11, 1837, at wich time she was aged seventy-five years and residedin Bowdoinham, Maine.
There is no reference to children of Benjamin and Meriam Rideout.

John Rideout and Elizabeth Getchell were married by Rev. Samuel Eaten.
John married (2nd) Spring of 1839 to Margaret Shellrup. He was a farmerof Lincoln Co., Maine, and of Sandusky and Clermont Co., Ohio. MissJohnson writes "Just when John Rideout moved to Ohio from Lincoln Co.,Me., we do not know; but probably in 1818, as that was the year of thebig migration to the West from Me. He was listed in the 1790 census asbeing a resident of Clermont Co., Ohio. The genealogical books givethename of Rideout as being derived from the name of the occupation of theRiderout or Outrider for the King. In the old days, family names werecreated from the occupation of the first man in any group to gain anyprominence in the tribes, while the Anglo-Saxons were stillsemi-savages." According to Miss D. Johnson, John was a sea captainduring the Revolution.

Cosmus, Duke of Florence, was wont to say of perfidious friends, that"We read that we ought to forgive our enemies; but we do not read tha twe ought to forgive our friends."
The first date we have in the family history is 910 A.D. when one Raniero (Rainier?) was living. The Italian historian Gammurini, says "the Gherardi were among the most ancient and wealthy families of Tuscany in 900 A.D." Family legend states that Anaes, a survivor of the siege of /troy, wandered for seven years after it’s overthrow, until he came to what was then called Latium, (now Italy). He brought with him his father and small son Ascanius, for whom the province of Tuscany is named. Anaes married the daughter of King Turnus of Latium, who was killed in battle. Anaes succeeded him as king of Latium and divided his lands among his descendants. To Gherardo, he gave the land of He/truria, where Florence now stands.
The family flourished until the year 1125. Then, during a political upheaval, the patrician families were driven into exile. In order to remain in Florence, the Gherardini renounced their patrician rank and became mere citizens. Later they were restored to their ancient honors, became very wealthy, and served the Republic of Florence both in the senate and on the battlefield. Three were Consuls of the Republic; others died as leaders of the Republican armies in the many civil wars. Confiscations and losses during the civil wars impoverished the Gherardini, and they also suffered much by the des/truction of their property in the great fire of Florence in 1303. From the 14th century onwards they seem to have played a smaller part in the history of Florence. At different times, between 1000 and 1400, individuals of the family emigrated, passing into France, England, Wales, Ireland, Cracow and the Canary Islands. Those who stayed in Florence became extinct, as did those in France and Cracow. It is pleasant to record that the Gherardini of Florence and the Irish "Geraldines" did not lose touch with each other. There are records of visits back and forth until the late 1500's.

NOTICE: "the posting of portions of General Bezaleel Thayer's 1874 Thayer genealogy ... has recently come to my attention. In many many instances his publication is in error. It is known as "The Disaster of 1874" in knowledgeable genealogical circles. I have published an errata to this work that includes just lineage mistakes alone. He assigned many of the wrong people to the wrong parents and even married individuals to the wrong spouses.
"If the reader wishes to verify, aside from my word, or that of my assistant, Jerry Thayer, it would be better for them to go to the works of someone who had checked with ORIGINAL sources. The best I can suggest is the unpublished manuscript of Waldo Chamberlain Sprague located in the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, MA; or at the Braintree Historical Society in Braintree, MA."
