Source: Virginia Loop - According to the History of Gorham, by Hugh McLellan (p. 159), a list of soldiers in the the War of 1812, under the command of Capt. Robert McLellan, included the name Lewis Hanscom.
Lewis was born in Gorham but moved to Harrison, Maine, as a young man. In 1816, he married Rebecca Johnson of Harrison. The six children of Lewis and Rebecca were all born in Harrison, Maine, between 1817 and 1832. Then in 1835 the whole family moved north to Springfield, Penobscot County, Maine. Land records of Washington County, Maine, show that Lewis was living in Baileyville in 1863 when he purchased two parcel of land there: a 25 acre parcel located between the Houlton and Ryan roads, and a 56 1/2 acre parcel known as lot No. 5. He was shown as "of Baileyville" when he sold the former parcel in September 1864 but "of Springfield" when he sold the latter parcel in July 1865.
Maine separated from Massachusetts on March 15, 1820 and was admitted to the Union. (VDL)

Source: Virginia Loop - Ruth Lewis said that David went to the Forest City Maine/Forest City, New Brunswick area in the mid-1860's to avoid fighting in the Civil War. He was one of the so called "skedaddlers" who lived in a place called Skedaddle Ridge which ran across the border. When authorities from the U. S. came, they would cross into Canada. After they left, they would come back across the border to Maine.
Frances (Hanscom) Cowing remembered David as a small man with long chin whiskers and not a tooth in his head. She said that he had a farm in Lakeville where he raised horses. Later on he went to Newport to live with son Fred. She said he died after he hit his head walking into the back of a stair casing.

Source: Virginia Loop - According to Genealogical and Family History of the State of Maine Pages 1541-43 Francis was born in Harrison, Maine, but early in his life he moved with his people to Springfield, which became his permanent residence. He was a farmer and lumberman and, about 1838, he married Mary, the daughter of Lewis and Rebecca (Johnson) Hanscom of Springfield.
According to Ruth Lewis, Francis helped build parts of the trace road that went from Lincoln to Topsfield

At the time of the 1870 census he and his family were living with his father.
Henry was a soldier in the Revolutionary War serving as a private with Company G, Maine Coast Guard from February 25 to July 6, 1865. Henry's application for an increase in his disability pension stated that he contracted a severe cold caused by exposure while on duty in Augusta, Maine. According to the affidavit of Jacob S. Gould, the cold resulted in kidney disease for which he was treated at Camp Keyes in Augusta.
According to Ruth Lewis, Henry built the house that Florence Lewis was born in, and that the Spinneys were living in in 1997. Ruth said that Jonas Blanchard built the house that she was born in, and was still living in in 1997, but that Henry renovated it when the Lewis family purchased it. Henry was also a road builder, supervising the building of the road from Springfield to East Winn. He was also a member of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic).
Frances (Hanscom) Cowing said that when she was a child she enjoyed sitting in Henry's lap and singing songs with him.
General Notes: Child - Clayton J. Lewis
Note: According to Genealogical and Family History of the State of Maine (p. 1542), Clayton was born in Springfield, where he was educated and farmed until 1883. Then he moved to Caribou, Maine, where he continued to farm until 1905, when he helped organize the corporation Hines and Smith, dealers in farm implements and hardware. Clayton, a Republican, served as a selectman on several occasions, and once as chairman of the board. He also was a member of the school committee and superintendent of schools. He was a Mason, belonging to the Caribou Lodge No. 170 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; and a member of Caribou Lodge No. 138 of the Patrons of Husbandry.

Mr. Turner whose death was mentioned last week, was born in the year 1800 in New Brunswick near the city of St. Johns, in about 1840 with his wife and family the oldest boy being about 12 years, he moved to Pickering. He bought the two hundred acres on which he lived until he died. This he cleared by hard work and thrift, became wealthy, and divided his property equally among his ten children, all of whom are well to do and much respected members of society. Seven of these five sons and two daughters are all in Ontario while three are in Dakota. Mr. Turner was intellectual and well read and in his prime at times ably occupied the pulpit, where his good advise was profitable to all, and among the very foremost of temperance advocates in our township. He was a very intimate friend of our aged and much respected citizen Mr. Hector Beaton, who is now the oldest representative in our midst of those long ago days. In reviewing the past we find that as boys of eight to fourteen they listened to the recent triumphs of Napoleon Bonaparte, of Wellington and Waterloo, of the horrors of the war of 1812, of the battles of Lundy's Lane; as men in their prime at nearly forty they participated in the joys of Queen Victoria's coronation day, and the anxieties of the Papineau and Mckenzie Rebellion of '37 and as men ready to retire in life, read the accounts of the Storming of Sabastopol, and the lamentations of the United States slave war. Mr. Turner's remains were followed to their last resting place in the Methodist cemetery by a large concourse of friends and relatives, who all extend their sincerest sympathy to the bereaved wife and mother who has been his helpmate so many years. The pall bearers consisted of his five sons and a grandson. After the funeral the people drove to the Baptist chapel where a impressive service was conducted by Rev. Messrs. Trotter and Real.
