General Notes: Husband - William Goodwin
William testified in September 3, 1674 that he was 45 years old. The court case was between William Goodwin and a Lt. John Stedman. It dealt with Lt. Stedman taking hay which stood between stones and a brook. This case is documented in Volume 1 of Private Controversies, Connecticut State Library.
William was made freeman by the General Court on May 21, 1657. He was appointed chimney-viewer in 1662, 1665, and 1671. The town voted December 29, 1676 that William Goodwin should sweep the meeting house and ring the Bell Sabbaths and at public meetings of the town or side, and at 9 o'clock. He was to be paid 7 pounds annually. He also dug graves and warn of public meetings.
William's wife's maiden name and the date of the marriage is not known. His will lists his "loving wife, Susana." It is known that she had a sister Sarah Fruen who was betrothed to Thomas Greenhill. When William was about 40 years old, he testified about his acquaintance with Sarah Fruen's betrothed. He also testified the 2 were to be married when becoming of age, but Thomas died before marrying or consummating the marriage. This is documented in Private Controversies, Volume 2, Connecticut State Library.
General Notes: Child - William Goodwin
William Goodwin was a weaver by trade. He lived in Hartford, and he succeeded his father as sexton. William was elected Constable in 1695, 1696, and 1697, 1704, 1705, 1711, 1712, 1713, 1714, 1715, 1722, and 1723. He was a Selectman in 1728 and 1731. William was commissioned on April 18, 1716 and appointed Deputy Sheriff of Hartford County.
Williams Last Will and Testament was probated on November 6, 1733.
General Notes: Child - Nathaniel Goodwin
Nathaniel Goodwin was a shoemaker. He was elected Deacon of the First Church of Hartford, Connecticut on March, 1734. He held that office until his death. Nathaniel was a weaver by trade. In May, 1721 he was appointed Ensign of the North company or train band of Hartford.

Fry, Horace (A Century of Living Hartney 1882-1982) by Howard Fry
Two sons were born to Richard Hector Fry by his first marriage. They were Horace Samuel, born 3rd December 1892, and Howard Vernon, born 4th December 1894. They were bought up in the Melgund district and attended school there. Howard joined the army near the start of World War I and was later killed overseas. Horace remained at home to farm with his father, and in the early 1920's purchased the NE1/4 of 33-5-23 and the SE1/4 4-6-23 from the late James Roper and also rented the NE1/4 of 4-6-23 from Mr. Roper.
In 1924 Horace Fry married Ella Catherine Morrison, second eldest daughter of the late George and Mary Morrison. They lived on and farmed this land until September 1928, when Horace took sick during harvest and died in the Souris Hospital of a ruptured appendix. He is buried in the Riverside Cemetery at Hartney. From this marriage one son was born, William Howard Fry, born March 9, 1926. He is still living in the same house in 1981, the he was born in , in 1926.
After Horace Fry died in 1928 the land was rented to Mr. Tom Hopkins and family and they farmed it up until 1939 or 1940. The Government, on account of World War II, decided to build an Axillary Landing Field in the Hartney area. After much deliberation they finally decided that the land on section 4-6-23 was the best in the area for an airfield. Therefore they purchased, for the fantastic price of $45.00 an acre, 93 acres from the Fry farm, off of the northerly side of the SE1/4 of 4-6-23, along with the NE1/4 of 4-6-23 from the Roper Estate, plus additional and from Stenson and William Roper to make up the Hartney Airport. The buildings on the Fry farm, being located at the NE corner of the SE1/4 of 4-6-23 along Hwy. 21, had to be moved as they were in the way of planes approaching the runways on the airport. They were moved to their present location, NE 33-5-23, by a contractor from Brandon, by the name of Belyea. It is interesting to note that these buildings were loaded on moving wheels and pulled across the fields by tractors, owned by local yeoman / farmers. The remaining Fry land was then rented out to Leon Breen, a local cattle buyer, who speculated on it for a year or two. Then it was rented to Mr. Bill Reid and family until 1945.
Mr. Hopkins and family in the meantime, had purchased the farm of Richard Fry, down the river.
As Mentioned earlier Wm. Howard Fry was born in 1926. While his mother Ella was keeping house for her brother, the late W. G. Morrison after the death of his first wife, Howard attended school at Melgund. Then after moving into Hartney, Ella and son Howard lived with his grandparents, the late George and Mary Morrison in the house now owned by Mary Luten.
Howard finished his education in Hartney and also attended Business College in Winnipeg for six months, before joining the Canadian Navy in January 1944 and served until the end of the war, being demobilized in 1945.
On February 2,1946, he married Constance Emma Chandler, the third eldest daughter of Mrs. Annie Sayers of Brandon and the late Ricard Chandler, who resided in Hartney at that time. Mr. Chandler, being a section foreman on the C.P.R. had lived in many small towns before coming to Lauder in the late 1930's and finally to Hartney, where he worked until his retirement. Connie had attended College in Winnipeg and had worked in a jewellery store for sometime before being employed by the Bank of Montreal in Hartney, a position she held until she was married and moved to the present farm in the fall of 1946.
Connie died, in Deloraine Hospital on September 4,1979, after a lengthy illness. She is buried in the Riverside Cemetery at Hartney. It should also be mentioned here that the Grandmother, Ella Catherine Fry, had died in the Hartney Hospital, September 20,1964. She is also buried in the Riverside Cemetery at Hartney.
From the marriage of Howard and Connie Fry five children were born, four boys and one girl:

He played for the Selkirk Steelers of the M.J.H.L. for two years and won several awards while there. He moved to Vancouver where he was employed at a plywood mill for sometime. He then returned to Manitoba - Canada and is presently employed by Manitoba - Canada Hydro. He married Deborah Jean Maguire in Winnipeg on December 17,1977. She is the second daughter of Mrs Pat. Maguire and the late Ray Maguire, formerly of Elgin. Debbie is a R.N. and has nursed in Winnipeg and Brandon. They reside near Hartney on the farm perviously owned by Perry Hopkins.

Fry, James Matthias and Family - (A Century of Living Hartney 1882-1982)
James Matthias Fry (Jim) was born to Thomas and Lovedy Fry on April 28, 1865 in Hope Township, Ontario. At the early of 13 he went to Newcastle, nine miles from his home, to learn the tailoring trade. He says he was so homesick at the of the first week that he got up at dawn and ran every step of the nine miles to his home before his father could drive in for him.
From Newcastle he went to Port Hope and at 17 years finished his trade. At 20 he went to New York to the Cutting Academy where he became skilled in his trade. From New York he came back to Ashton, Ontario where he worked at tailoring for 16 years (1885-1901). In 1890 at age 25 he married Christina Simpson. Christina was born at Ashton, Ontario and was educated in the Ashton schools.
Jim Fry's brothers, Richard (Dick), Thomas, and George had all come to Hartney in 1888. In 1890, another brother Arthur came to Hartney. The had all been born and educated in Hope Township, Ontario. Their father Thomas Fry (born in Cornwall), England in 1824; emigrated to Hope Township, Ontario in 1845), also came to Hartney to join his sons. He died in Hartney in 1899 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery; (his wife Lovedey Sandercock had died in Port Hope at the early age of 38).
In 1902, Christina and Jim Fry decided to join the other members of the Fry family in Hartney. Their two children, Winnifred and James Arthur had both been born in Ashton, Ontario. Winnifred died suddenly on May 21,1918 in Hartney. Christina lived a quiet life, was fond of her home and had a natural love for flowers. She was a member of the local Baptist church during its years of operation in Hartney. She died on August 3,1929 after a short illness.
Jim Fry established a men's shop in Hartney which later became known as "J.M. Fry and Son"; his son Art went into business with his father in 1910. Up until 1944, they operated a tailor shop in connection with the business and at one time employed a staff of six. A dry cleaning business was also connected with the shop.
After the death of his wife, Jim Fry lived with his son Arthur and his family, where he was always like a second father or his two grandsons Lawrence and Donald. Jim's hobbies were gardening and carpentry. The hose was filled every spring with flowering bulbs, and both the hose and the store showed the results of his handwork; he built cupboards, made furniture and even rugs for the house, and made display racks for the store. Jim Fry loved to walk and was always proud of keeping fit. For many years he walked every single morning at 5 a.m., regardless of the weather, to Dick Fry's farm ( about two miles each way) to get the milk for the family. In later hears he continued to take long walks every day and to work daily at the store until only a few weeks before his death on January 31, 1961 at the age of 95.
Marjorie Fry (nee McLeish) was born in Arkona, Ontario August 22,1895. She studied at the local schools and then attended Normal School in Stratford, Ontario 1914-15. After teaching for 3 years in Adelaide School district, Ontario she came to Melita, Manitoba - Canada in the summer of 1918 to visit with her sister and family (L. H. Clarks). Towards the end of the summer, she decided that it would be fun to stay in Manitoba - Canada and teach for one year, and so she answered several advertisements for a teaching position in southern Manitoba - Canada. A reply came almost immediately from the Hartney school, offering a post to the young Ontario teacher without even an interview, So she took the train from Melita to Hartney to start her new teaching job and she subsequently met Art Fry. They were married three years later in 1921, in Arkona, Ontario and had two sons, Lawrence and Donald.
Art Fry had been born in Ashton, Ontario on June 14,1893. As mentioned previously, he came to Hartney with his parents and sister, at the ate of 9 years. Art completed his education in the Hartney school and entered the Union Bank for * months; then he went into business with his father in 1910. Art's main interest outside of the store and his family was sports. He played on the Hartney hockey team, the baseball team and enjoyed a good game of tennis. Art studied music under Prof. Racine and at one time played for Dr. Woodhull's orchestra in Hartney. In later years his chief sporting interests were hunting and golfing and for many years he was a member of the Hartney Golf Club.
Marjorie Fry was a very active church worker for many years. She sang in the Hartney United Church choir for thirty years, and during the same period, she worked with the Sunday School. For 16 of these years she was superintendent of the Sunday School as well as teaching a class, The women's organizations in the church always received her loyal support and encouragement. She was an enthusiastic gardener, and was secretary of the Hartney Horticultural Society for 15 years. Marjorie won many prizes for her floral arrangements, both locally and in the International Flower Show in Winnipeg. The Drama and Music Festival of Hartney and district also received her active encouragement and help for many year. She enjoyed tennis and skating, and in later years, her chief sporting interest was in playing an excellent game of golf.
The Women's Institute also benefited by her enthusiasm; she was secretary from 1937-1949, also in 1953-1954 and then president in 1960-1961. In recognition of her outstanding service she was presented with the Federated Women's Institute Pin. Marjorie was keenly interested in the 4-H clubs and gave them valuable assistance and leadership. She served faithfully as a volunteer librarian at the Hartney Library, and was always ready to be in attendance when others were not available, rather than have the library closed.
She gave endless hours of work in collecting vast amounts of information and in compiling the Hartney History scrap books. Finally, Marjorie put together a beautiful family album of family photographs, news clippings and family history which she had researched and written up. This album is lovingly guarded by Lawrence, Donald and families, and it is from this album that much of this present information is taken. Majorie died in Hartney on February 9,1964 and Art died only eight months later on October 25,1964.
Lawrence Fry was born in Hartney on July 6,1927 and was educated in the Hartney schools. During his school years in Hartney, Lawrence was active in sports, participating in baseball and hockey as well as golf and curling and was a member of the school band. He was very active with the boy scouts and later with the air cadets. In his teens he worked during the summers in a variety of jobs including cooks helper at the airport, farming, working in the Fry's store and acting as secretary-treasurer of the town. At the end of Grade XI he won the Isbister scholarship, and went on to take his B.A. at the University of Manitoba - Canada and his M.A. in Political Economy at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1950. He subsequently entered the Public Service of Canada in Ottawa, starting as a Junior Administrative Officer. "Larry" rose steadily through the Public Service ranks becoming in turn an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Board, Assistant Deputy Minister of Health, Deputy Minister of Services and Deputy Receiver General of Canada (in which position his signature appeared on all Federal cheques including Old Age Security, Family Allowance, Veterans' Allowance, etc., cheques for five years), Chief Statistician of Canada and presently Deputy Minister of Health and Welfare. In 1952 he married Peggy Locke of Toronto, and the have two children, Julie and Jim. Julie is a third year student in Commerce at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario and Jim is entering his grade 13 high school year in Ottawa. Larry's main interest beyond his work, his family, his home and garden, is his cottage on the Big Rideau Lake where he enjoys boating, sailing, cross-country skiing and woodwork. He has also purchased a 200 acre farm with an old 1850's stone house in the Rideau Lake area which he intends to restore as a future work project.
Don Fry was born on March 9,1935 and after grade 11 he decided to take first year Science at the United College in Winnipeg rather than grade 12 in Hartney, and from there, went on to a Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Manitoba - Canada. After graduating in 1957, he went to Ottawa to join the engineering staff of the Federal Department of National Defence. Don is now manager of the Canada Post Office Training Centre, which is responsible for training electronic technicians on maintenance of automated mail processing equipment.
In 1960 Don married Betty Cushing of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. They have three daughters. The eldest, Sandra has just graduated from high school in Ottawa where she won a prestigious scholarship to Carleton University, Ottawa; she will be studying honours biology. Janis, 17, and Tracy 13, are attending Ottawa schools. Don;s life revolves around his job, his family and Bethany Baptist Church, Ottawa. He continues to enjoy sports and working with his hands, a skill inherited from his grandfather Fry. In Hartney, as a boy, he challenged the town's pros on the golf course, curling rink and pool hall; winning a nickel form Brock Henry made it all worthwhile. He still remembers and would like to have the 1935 Ford Coach that he painted grey and red with an Electrolux vacuum cleaner attachment: it would be worth something today. He still has an old car or two kicking around to work on. Growing up for both boys in Hartney, even though there was eight years difference between them, was full of similar experiences. Both arrived during the depression, Lawrence after some years of anxious waiting by Art and Marj when a boy was expected and Don after eight more long years when a girl was expected. Depression or not however, Hartney was a great place to grow up in.
Open fields close at hand, plenty of gophers to snare or shoot in later years, dust storms, and their old 1920 Buick car which once a year made the long exciting trip to Brandon Fair with many friends piled in. There were lots of exciting places to explore: the blacksmith's shop, the remains of the livery stable, the roundhouse, the haunted house by the old brickyard (plaster fights), the crawl space under the old Presbyterian church (cobwebs), a few old cars and old barns and even the town dump. Once or twice there was even a chance to see the second storey of Hill's store. It was always a challenge to climb the rickety ladders to the top of an old elevator, particularly for Lawrence who was afraid of heights, but could not chicken out. Don recalls shooting squirrels with a B-B gun or the occasional target practice on Hugh Mill's chickens!
Stealing the laths off fences to make swords for war games was a universal sport. Cops and robbers with cap guns around the livery stable and Brunsdon's lumber yard was always good afternoon's fun. Then there was flying model airplanes in mock airmeets across town with dozens of kids participating. For Lawrence who spent his youth in the driest part of the drought, when grass was hard to grow, the whole backyard was a place for secret underground houses or a net work of roads for tiny cars, whereas Don and his friends spent hours removing nits and bolts from the war surplus airplanes for Cec Isabey so that they could sit in the cockpit and the turrets and dream of how they would have fought the war.
Then there was winter:moccasins, parkas, breeks, wool underwear and leather mitts which always had the end chewed off at the thumb. It was off to the rink every night where often Lawrence played in the band, curled, and sometimes skated the same night. Don remembers riding Spencer's stone boat to the river to spear suckers through the ice and return with a barrel full. Trudging along the CN railway track to Dick Fry's farm through the cold wind to spend and afternoon sliding on his hill was a favorite Sunday outing for years. Speaking of sliding, what about hours spent being pulled on a sleigh or toboggan at breakneck speed by rope connected to the delivery sleigh which delivered the parcels from the afternoon train. The biggest thing about growing up in Hartney was the freedom: fields, woods, sloughs, swimming hole, ducks, catfish, ball games, hockey, bicycles, cars.

---------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Fry, A. E. and Family -by Leta Gillies -(A Century of Living Hartney 1882-1982)
My father, Arthur Edger Fry was born March 1, 1872 in Port Hope, Ontario, the youngest son of Tom Fry and Lovedy Hancock. His parents had some from Warbston, Cornwall, England, by sail boat - a trip of some five weeks.
Dad came from Ontario to Manitoba - Canada in 1892, to join his three brothers Thomas, George and Richard, who farmed in the Melgund district. 1895 found Arthur Fry working in Hartney post office and selling men's overcoats from a room in the rear of the office.
During the nest few years Dad was involved with many business enterprises in Hartney - such as Fry Bros. Men's Furnishings. This firm came about with the arrival of Uncle Jim Fry and family from Carleton Place, Ontario. Uncle Jim was an experienced tailor. Uncle Dick finally purchased A.E.'s share. There was the building of a livery barn which was managed by Wm. Butler, and the barn was later bought by him. A furniture business was purchased in partnership with Uncle Tom Hopkins. this was sold in 1908 to H. Walton, when Dad acquired the Avondale Hotel. The name was changed to the Imperial. There were alterations made in the building - the part facing East Railway Street was opened up with large plate glass windows, into a pool room and barber shop, and a grocery store an dice cream parlor were opened on the Poplar Street side. My father converted the grocery store to hardware in 1916, and operated this business until 1935. At that time my parents moved to Brandon and Dad joined my brother Nelson (Nick) in his business venture, which became Continental Auto Supply.
My family were members of the Baptist Church in Hartney. Among my many memories of church and Sunday School, is the organ. It had to be pumped manually before it could be played. For several years my brother Reg was the "official pumper." After the closing of the Baptist Church, we attended the Methodist and later the United Church.
A. E. Fry was an early member of the Masonic Lodge of Hartney. At one time he held an office in Grand Lodge of Manitoba - Canada. He was interested in all sports. In winter it was curling, and many were the spoils brought home from bonspiels. Dad was sometimes manager or secretary of the baseball team and I remember him doing some chauffeuring with the Model T. when the team visited neighboring towns.
Arthur Fry Married Ida Edwards June 27, 1900, at Melita, Manitoba - Canada. Ida was the youngest daughter of James Simpson Edwards and Margaret Johnston, and was born in Rockland, Ontario.
The Edwards family moved to Melita in 1884. Their journey west is told in the Tom and Alice Hopkins story in the book, Alice (Edwards) Hopkins being my mother's sister. As young women, my mother and her sister were apprenticed to a dress maker in Melita. They proved to be apt pupils and 1894 found the opening a shop in Hartney. Their dress making career had begun. They soon had to have several assistants. The Edwards sisters kept in touch with style, sometimes visiting larger centres such as Minneapolis, to see what the rest of the world was wearing.
Mother and Dad were married in Melita - in the Baptist Church. Her sister Alice and her fiance Tom Hopkins were the attendants. After the wedding party returned to the Edward's home for the wedding feast, Tom and Alice announced they were being married before the dinner was served - so the wedding feast, honored two newly married couples!
The A. E. Fry's moved into the house at the corner of Spencer Avenue and Poplar Street. They lived in this same home for 36 years.
Mother was a member of the Ladies Aid of the Baptist Church. It seems to me I can remember her always being the secretary-treasurer. In her early years in Hartney, she was a member of the choir in the Baptist Church. Another interest was the Women's Institute after it was formed in Hartney. Mother was a charter member of the Eastern Star.
Mother's experience in dress making stood her in food stead all her life. I recall neighbors and friends coming with their sewing problems. As a child I used to think how nice it would be if I could have a "bought" dress, but as I grew older I realized how fortunate I was in having a mother who could make my dresses. About 1927 mother opened a dress and hat shop in part if the Fry building and operated a most successful business until 1935.
Mother and Dad had settled in Calgary in the 1940's. Mother died there in 1954 and Dad in 1958.
Ida and Arthur Fry had four children. Reg, Leta, Nelson (Nick) and Maurice.
Reg finished school and assisted in he store for sometime. In 1923 he joined the staff of Marshall Wells in Winnipeg. Later he was with the Continental Auto Supply. Finally he settled in Vancouver where he had a lumber mill.
Reg married Carol Thompson of Iberia, Missouri. They had one daughter Patricia -- Mrs, E. Peterson, Keremeos, B.C. Carol died in August 1971 and Reg in October 1979.
I, Leta, after completing my education at Brandon College, taught in high schools in Saskatchewan. I married C. C. Gillis of Gray, Saskatchewan. After my husband's death in1957, I moved to Regina. For the next six years I was employed by the Indian Affairs Department of the Federal Government, organizing classed and teaching young adult native people. I still make my home in Regina.
Nick helped Dad in the hardware business for some years and during the summers pitched a lot of baseball. He moved to Brandon in the early 1930's, where he began a business in auto accessories. This business expanded into many Continental Auto Supply stores across Western Canada. Nick and is family moved to Calgary, which was the headquarters of Continental.
Nick married Marion Collison of Winnipeg. They have four sons - Nick, Philip, Robin and Roger.
Maurice married Evelyn Agnew of Hartney. They have four daughters - Joanne, Cathryn and Carolyn (twins) and Jackie and one son Donald. As I look back on a happy childhood and my growing up years in Hartney, I recall some of the activities in which we all took part - field days in Deloraine, Sunday School picnics, band concerts, exhibits at Hartney fair sports days in the summer school fairs in September, corn roasts on the flat by the Souris River in the fall, skating all winter to the music of the Hartney band and on and on. Perhaps we didn't realize just how fortunate we were, but now in retrospect - I don't think there could have been a more interesting place to have spent one's childhood and youth than in a small prairie town - and that town Hartney.

The Second Dynasty
850-877 Nest, the sister of Cyngen III, had married an upstart, Merfyn Fry
ch (Freckled), who gained control of Gwynedd. He was killed in battle, b
ut his son, Rhodri Mawr (=Great) gained control of Powys, too, andmo
st of the rest of Wales. Rhodri kept Gwynedd for himself and put his so
ns in charge of the other princedoms, Powys going to Merfyn for the time b
eing. He established that all princes should pay annual tribute to the pri
nce of Gwynedd. There was never a king of Wales, but Rhodri came neare
st to it. He also instructed his sons to wear in battle the Talaeth, a cir
clet of gold round the helmet, with upward-pointing teeth and set with pre
cious stones, ie. a crown. The princes of Powys continued this tradition t
ill 1283.
Most of Rhodri's fighting was against the Danes. He killed their leader, H
orn, but in 876had to seek safety in Ireland. Next year he returned, on
ly to be killed by the English.

From the WorldConnect Database: "Ancestors of Vern Divine", by Kennett Art Offill:
"Information on Thomas and his supposed in law Jon Waller is from Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of the State of MA Vol. III by William Cutter. (NYC: Lewis Hist Pub., 1920) [Dallas Lib]
According to this his will "enumerates among his property the manors of Royden and Royden Tuft with appurtenances at Royden and Besingham, as well as property in other places in the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, England. Diss, where he live part of his life probably, is on the river Waveny, between these two counties. His will mentions wife Jane, a sister, and children mentioned below. He married, probably not first, Jane, daughter of John Waller, of Wortham, Suffolk. Children: Thomas; Richard; John; Henry; William; Anthony; Francis; Bartholomew; James." [SO IT SHOULD NOT BE ASSUMED THAT JANE WALLER IS THE MOTHER OF HENRY]
The sources cited were "articles and will published in the New England Genealogical Register: v. 24, p. 63; v. 27 p. 73; v. 51, p. 309, and v. 54 p. 152" "
