==================================
information from newspaper clippings that were found in Stephen Pierce Family Bible recently [Sep 2003] purchased at an estate auction:
~~~~~~~~~
Olcott Sherman, Esq., died at his residence in Poultney Dec 25th 1880, at the age of 80 years. He was born June 17th, 1800 in Barre, Vt., and was a son of Jonathan Sherman, who was the first settler of Barre.
He early began life for himself following the occupation of brick-mason and sadler. He worked in Boston and various other places, and finally came to Poultney in company with Paul M Ross, in 1825, and the two in company set up harness making in East Poultney. Mr. Sherman moved to the West village in 1835, where he resided until his death, and almost to the day of death following his trade of mason.
He was an active, earnest, industrious man, achieving remarkable success in his calling, and left an excellent example of industry, frugality and attention to his business. He was frequently called to hold town offices and places of trust by his fellow citizens. At various times he held the offices of justice of the peace, selectman, constable, assessor and grand juror, and as in his own business, he always faithfully and promptly discharged the duties of the same.
On the 26th day of January 1830, he was united in marriage with Maria, daughter of the late Philo Hosford, with whom he has lived for more than half a century-she survives him. Three children were born to them, two of whom survive, Solon Sherman of Poultney and Mrs. Henry Clark of Rutland. Another, the wife of C F Petty of the American Express Co, Chicago died in 1871. He was an indulgent husband, a kind and loving father and a good citizen.
Mr. Sherman's death was very sudden. Only two weeks since we had occasion to note his remarkable activity for one his age. He was violently attacked on the morning of Christmas, and died at 8:30 in the evening. He was conscious of his condition, is mind remained clear and active until he quietly and peacefully passed away. The funeral was attended from his late residence on Monday the 27th, by a large gathering of friends and neighbors; the exercises were conducted by Rev. Dr. Starks. The burial was in the family lot in the new cemetery.
From the book, "Ancestral Lines - Third Edition", by Carl Boyer, 3rd. (p. 523):
"Samuel Sherman, baptized in Dedham, Essex, Endland, 11 Jan. 1573/4, died at Ardleigh in the county of Essex, before 2 March 1615/6.
He married Philippa Ward, who was apparently related to the Wards of Lexden, Essex, and the John and Robert (brothers?) Ward families of Stratford, Essex, with others of Mersey, Essex, and Weathersfield. Samuel Sherman and Robert Ward both called John Upcher of Dedham "brother-in-law" and had children named Samuel, Martha and Sarah. Perhaps John Upcher married a Ward. Search in Stratford and Ipswich for a will of Lancelot Ward might help, as he was probably the father [Stratton's New Light, 53-54].
On 2 Oct. 1599 he took surrender of a parcel of land called Pepers field, containing three acres, from his father and George Cole. He was overseer of the will of his brother-in-law, Simon Fenn, in 1610.
The will of Samuel Sherman "of Dedham and Ardley" (Ardleigh), Essex, dated 20 Jan. 1615/6, was proven 2 March 1615/6 [Archdeaconry of Colchester 1585-1614, Cooke 31]. His wife "Philipp[a]" and "john Uppcheire, of Dedham, my brother in law," were executors.
Children, baptized at Dedham:
i. Mary, bapt. 2 Oct. 1599; living 1616.
ii, Samuel, bapt. 20 Oct. 1601 [see NEHGR, 2:401, 9:226, 24:64, 50:415]; d. Boston 1643; m. Grace.
iii. Henry, bapt. 20 Oct. 1601; d. young.
iv. Henry, bapt. 25 June 1603; d. Boston 1651.
v. Martha, bapt. 24 Jan. 1604[/5?]; living 1616.
vi. Sarah, bapt. 11 Feb 1606; bur. Dedham 5 Dec. 1612.
"The Sherman's are of German origin. In the Fatherland, the nameSherman, Schierman, often occurs, and was no doubt transferred to Londonand vicinity many centuries ago by the Anglo Sazon immigrants where itstill remains numerous. From the metropolitan stock, a scion wastransplanted to Dedham, County of Essex, England, which long flourished,and sent out other shoots. The name is derived from the originaloccupation of the family, they were cloth dressers or shearers of thecloth. The family at Dedham retained the occupation of the family, andalso the coat of Arms (I have a copy) (a dragon sitting on a bar, ascroll with three gold spots on shoulder, a lion rampant on a gold shieldwith three green oak leaves. Both figures face the left, and are inblack. The motto I have not as yet got, but it is promised to me byCarrie Brayton of Fall River, who has it. Her name was Slade and hermother, Mary, was Great-Grandpa's sister (something missing here) wornby those in and about London. In New England are found two distinctfamilies bearing the name of Sherman. One of these descends from WilliamSherman who came over with the pilgrims about 1630 and settled atMarshfield, Mass. The other is the Dedham stock a branch of whichimmigrated to New England, and settled in the vicinity of Boston."
"Phillip Sherman of the Dedham line, was born February 5th, 1610 inDedham, England, married Sarah Odding daughter of Mrs. John Porter by aformer marriage. In 1634 he came to New England and settled at Roxbury,Mass. In the Anne Hutchinson troubles at Boston he took her side, but asGovernor Winthrop prevailed he with others found it convenient to move toRhode Island. In Providence they met Roger Williams, who advised them topurchase the island of Aguetuct (Aquidneck) now Rhode Island of theindians. The purchase was completed March 24, 1638. On July 1st 1639they established a regular government with William Coddington, Governor,and Phillip Sherman, clerk. After this he often held office in theColony in critical periods. After he removed to Rhode Island he left theCongregational Church and united with Society of Friends. Phillip wasson of Samuel
From the book, "Ancestral Lines - Third Edition", by Carl Boyer, 3rd. (p. 523):
"Samuel Sherman, baptized in Dedham, Essex, Endland, 11 Jan. 1573/4, died at Ardleigh in the county of Essex, before 2 March 1615/6.
He married Philippa Ward, who was apparently related to the Wards of Lexden, Essex, and the John and Robert (brothers?) Ward families of Stratford, Essex, with others of Mersey, Essex, and Weathersfield. Samuel Sherman and Robert Ward both called John Upcher of Dedham "brother-in-law" and had children named Samuel, Martha and Sarah. Perhaps John Upcher married a Ward. Search in Stratford and Ipswich for a will of Lancelot Ward might help, as he was probably the father [Stratton's New Light, 53-54].
On 2 Oct. 1599 he took surrender of a parcel of land called Pepers field, containing three acres, from his father and George Cole. He was overseer of the will of his brother-in-law, Simon Fenn, in 1610.
The will of Samuel Sherman "of Dedham and Ardley" (Ardleigh), Essex, dated 20 Jan. 1615/6, was proven 2 March 1615/6 [Archdeaconry of Colchester 1585-1614, Cooke 31]. His wife "Philipp[a]" and "john Uppcheire, of Dedham, my brother in law," were executors.
From the WorldConnect Database: "Ancestors of Vern Divine", by Kennett Art Offill:
"Information on Thomas and his supposed in law Jon Waller is from Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of the State of MA Vol. III by William Cutter. (NYC: Lewis Hist Pub., 1920) [Dallas Lib]
According to this his will "enumerates among his property the manors of Royden and Royden Tuft with appurtenances at Royden and Besingham, as well as property in other places in the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, England. Diss, where he live part of his life probably, is on the river Waveny, between these two counties. His will mentions wife Jane, a sister, and children mentioned below. He married, probably not first, Jane, daughter of John Waller, of Wortham, Suffolk. Children: Thomas; Richard; John; Henry; William; Anthony; Francis; Bartholomew; James." [SO IT SHOULD NOT BE ASSUMED THAT JANE WALLER IS THE MOTHER OF HENRY]
The sources cited were "articles and will published in the New England Genealogical Register: v. 24, p. 63; v. 27 p. 73; v. 51, p. 309, and v. 54 p. 152" "
An autopsy was being conducted Sundayafternoon. Police had made no arrests in the case as of Sundayevening, and no cause of death had been released. Shoreyreportedly had checked into the Bangor Street hotel Tuesdayafter spending time out of state. McCausland said police weretold that Shorey recently hadbeen in Louisiana. "We were toldthat she came back here to take care of some issues and that shehad a hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court scheduled for Fridaywhich she did not show up for," he said Sunday. "Our informationis that she was planning to move to Louisiana permanently." Herbody was found at about 9 p.m. Friday. Investigators at thehotel over the weekend combed Shorey's room for clues. A hotelrepresentative could not comment on the case, and a door leadingto the hotel lobby was locked early Sunday afternoon. Policesaid Shorey had been an employee at Houlton Regional Hospital.Tom Moakler, the hospital's chief executive officer, recalledSunday that Shorey was "a nice person and a good employee" whohad worked as a phlebotomist in the hospital laboratory.Moakler said he believed she had worked at the facility forseveral years.
