AUGUSTA - Robert Long Witham shed this mortal coil and passed on to the undiscovered country Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010. He suffered no pain, and passed away quietly and peacefully at his home, in the presence of his wife of almost 62 years and family. He was born Friday, Feb. 13, 1920, at North Bend, outside of Surry. He was fond of claiming that Friday the 13th was his lucky day. He was the only child of Willis Wilbur Witham and Adelaide Victoria (Carpenter) Witham. At age 3, his family moved from North Bend to live on a farm in East Blue Hill. He attended George Stevens Academy, Blue Hill, until age 16 when he left school to help support his family. At age 17 he joined East Blue Hill Grange and became master at age 18, making him the youngest master ever in that Grange chapter. He remained a lifelong member of the Grange, a total of 73 years. He participated in Youth Conservation Corps at Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, Dennysville, helping conduct surveys of duck and woodcock populations. He later worked as a welding chipper at the South Portland shipyard prior to his entry into the U.S. Army <http://www.legacy.com/legacies/army/?personid=146287099&affiliateID=2905> Air Corps. He was proud to claim the title of "fastest chipper" by removing more feet of weld from a ship deck during his shift than any other worker there. He was stationed in India during the war as a supply sergeant, handling materials and supplies for much of the China-Burma-India Theater of operations. After the war he returned to Maine and entered the Maine Warden Service, moving to Millinocket in 1946. He married Susan Annie Klimas, Feb. 28, 1949, and moved to "The Hathaway Farm" in Medway, on the banks of the East Branch of the Penobscot, where they lived for the next 47 years. He joined the Masons as a member of Nollesemic Lodge, Millinocket, in 1953, and remained a member of the lodge until his death. He served as chaplain of the lodge for several years, and was the director of several Masonic plays presented by Nollesemic lodge members across Maine. He was a 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rites, a Knight Templar in the York Rites as well, and a member of Anah Shrine, Bangor. On May 1, 1990, he was recognized for his contributions to masonry when he was awarded the Simon Greenleaf Medal at the annual meeting of the Grand Lodge of Maine. He left the warden service in 1954, and went to work for Great Northern Paper Co., East Millinocket, as a watchman, and later held positions as a storekeeper at East Millinocket and Millinocket mills until his retirement in 1985. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a registered Maine Guide for many years. He loved to spend time with friends at his hunting camp in Weston, where he was "camp cook." He claimed the title of cook because, as he pointed out to his hunting companions at the camp, "the cook doesn't have to do the dishes." The arrangement worked well for all involved through nearly 40 years of hunting trips at the camp, and many a glass of Crown Royal was shared among friends there after the hunt was over and the chores were done. He is survived by his wife, Susan; his daughter, Barbara Ann Witham of Lamoine; his son, Robert L. Witham Jr. and his wife, Michele, of Augusta; his grandchildren, Melanie Anne (Witham) Mistretta and her husband, Cataldo, of Mendon, Mass., and Jason Willis Witham and his wife, Jeannine, of Warwick, R.I., as well as four great-grandchildren. Interment of his cremated remains will be at Grindstone Road Cemetery, Medway. A family reception and wake will be hosted 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 6, by Frank and Ann Davis at their home on Powersville Road, Medway, to allow friends to say hello and remember his life. A Masonic graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in his name to Healthreach Hospice, care of MaineGeneral Office of Philanthropy, P.O. Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903. "The workman has laid down his tools and submitted his work. The Great Architect has tested his stone by the plumb, level, and square and found it true to His plan. It has been judged a perfect ashlar, and fit to be included in His heavenly house. His work is complete and he can now rest from his labors."

Susan Klimas Witham
AUGUSTA -- Susan Klimas Witham of Augusta passed away Sept. 5, 2011, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Sue, as she was known to all her friends, was born in Millinocket, Sept. 15, 1923. She was the daughter of William and Barbara Klimas, immigrants from Lithuania. She attended Stearns High School and was happy to have joined 14 other classmates in July for their 70th reunion (class of 1941).
She was proud to have served the war effort during World War II as "Rosie the Riveter," building airplanes for the Air Force in Trenton, N.J.
Sue married Robert Witham Feb. 28, 1949, and together they moved to the Hathaway Farm in Medway, where they resided for over 40 years. For a "city girl," she learned to love the farm and all that entails -- taking care of the animals, tending the gardens and cutting hay in the fields.
She served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for several years and the young women in her troop still remember her guiding hand. She loved crafts and was accomplished at both crocheting and tatting and won several awards for both at National Grange contests.
She also worked as the daytime cook at Hamlet Restaurant in East Millinocket for many years, serving many a breakfast and lunch to hungry paper mill workers.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Ann Witham, of Lamoine; her son, Robert L. Witham Jr., and his wife, Michele, of Augusta; her grandchildren, Melanie Anne (Witham) Mistretta and her husband, Cataldo, of Mendon, Mass, and Jason Willis Witham and his wife, Jeannine, of Warwick, R.I.; as well as four great-grandchildren.

Printha Mansfield Radecki (RIN 62), maintained a list of family vital statistics. Birth and death dates are from her list.
My information regarding Addie Fitts Mansfield and her descendants was gleaned from telephone conversations with Addie's husband's daughters by his second wife, Printha and Gertie in Jan 1991.
. Printha relates that Myron had a very short marriage in his youth to a woman named Lizzie and that they had a son, Kenneth. Lizzie took Kenneth with her, but Myron wanted to fight to keep the child. His new wife, Mary, however did not want to raise the child, so Myron gave up the fight. Printha does not think that they kept in touch, but that just before WWII, Kenneth looked his father up at the mill in Stockport and that they spent a weekend together.
. Myron was for years superintendant of the same textile mill in Yarmouth where Printha's father was. Myron had a reputation for excelence in the mixing of dyes.
Elma R. Borden wrote a book "Locust Grove 1695 to Groveville 1980", Gardner Printing Co., Lambertville, NJ: 1984 (found in Hamilton Library Reference only). From pages 50-51:
. I also remember that during these years the Mansfields were gracious in entertaining. They encouraged their children to seek good playmates and always wanted to know who they were. Their oldest son, Myron, married a girl from the village, Elizabeth Kline.
The 1930 census for district 41, Stockport, Columbia Co., New York (Ancestry.com image page 3 of 34) lists Myron J. Mansfield on Chester Ave., renting for $18 per month, not owning a radio, age 32, first married at age 26 [this would actually be his age at his second marriage. He had a child by his first wife, Lizzie, at about age 20], he and parents born in Maine, machinist at a woolen mill, not a veteran.
. Mary P., wife, age 32, married at age 25, born in New York, parents born in Germany.
Following is a letter, dated 25 Aug 1983, Yarmouth, Maine, from Doris Mansfield (Myron's cousin) to Myron's half sister, Viola:
. "I'm glad you wrote as it gives me a chance to tell you about Myron. He has been coming down twice a year for several years and when he was here in the Spring of 1982 he told me he had been bleeding from the rectum during the Winter. He promised me he would see his Dr. as soon as he got home which he did and was told to see a Surgeon as something was wrong. I didn't hear from him after he went home and in Sept. I wrote to him again, in Oct. and in Nov. I called his house several times and got no answer and the letters not answered or returned. I sent a Christmas card and said PLEASE drop a line so I will know how you are. He called me just before Xmas. He said he went into the hospital on Labor Day and got home just before Thanksgiving. He had a Clostomy?? and they found spots on his liver. He had gained 18 pounds and got around the house with a walker. The Dr. wanted him back for treatments in Jan. which he did and went down hill fast. He left the hospital in March and was in a Nursing Home until he passed away April 6. I think the Dr. was wrong to try any more treatments when the liver was already effected.
. A woman called me the morning of April 7 and told me he had gone, he asked her not to write or call until after he went because he didn't want to worry me. I asked her who she was and she said her Mother's sister was married to Mary's brother Anthony. She wrote me three or four letters but I did not care for her. Myron mentioned his friends and Mary's family but these people were never mentioned by him. . .
. [Here Doris talks about Myron's wife, Mary. I have included that part of the letter in Mary's notes.]
. The husband of this woman came to Yarmouth one night after I had been out for the evening. I got a call he was in Yarmouth and wanted to come over and see me. I was curious as to what he wanted so I told him to come. I didn't like him either. According to them, he [I don't know who "he" refers to] had never told them anything about his family, only his cousin Doris.
. I enjoyed him, Myron, we were not so apart in age. I was 78 and he was 85. He usually came on a Wed. and I had a nice home cooked dinner when he got here and then Thurs. he took me out. We always went to the shore for a nice seafood meal, then he left early the next morning for home. He was most faithful to Mary; he drove 12 miles twice a day to the Nursing Home to feed her noon and night.
. I have wondered if Bill was still living, he was 4 years older than Myron, I think.". . .
. [Here Doris writes about her cousin, Charles Baker, and I have included that part of the letter in his notes.]
. Now I must close and do a little garden work. I have a smaller one than usual but fresh cukes and beans, corn, etc. tastes awful good. We've had a funny year, lots of rain all Spring, hot and dry through July and Aug. I dread winter but I love the fall.
. hope you can read this, I write worse every day.
. Cousin
. Doris Mansfield

From the memory of Printha Mansfield Radecki, her half sister-in-law. Lizzie, as she was called, and Myron married young. Lizzie left Myron after a short time and they divorced. Lizzie took their son, Kenneth, with her.
The 1920 census for Myron's father, Joseph Greely Mansfield, has Elizabeth and her son, Kenneth enumerated in his household in Niles, Michigan. The census listed her status as married.

There is no name or date of the newspaper article.
'After an illness covering several weeks, Gustave Klotz passed away Sundaym February 19, at the home of his nsister, Mrs. George Dienst. He was born at Belgard, Germany, June 28, 1871. At the time of his death, he was 50 years, 4 months and 28 days old.
He was the son of William and Wilhemena Klotz, and came with his parents to this country when about one year of age. The parents settled at Little Rock, and later went to Pierce, north of Hinckley, where he lived until about fifteen years ago, since which time he has resided in and near Sandwich.
On December 6, 1917, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Perham, of this city, and aftera residence of a little more than a year, they moved onto the Woodward farm, one mile south of Sandwich.
Besides his wife, he is survived by five brothers and two sisters, Albert, Charles, Herman, Will and Louis, and Mrs George Dienst and Miss Emma Klotz, all of whom reside in and about Sandwich and Hinckley.
He was a member of the Congregational church of Sandwich, having united with it, with his wife, a short time after their marriage. Gus, as he was familiarly called, was of a retiring disposition, not much given to talk or social functions, but yet had many good friends, who esteemed him for his splendid worth as a man.
The funeral services were held at the Congregational church in Sanwich, yesterday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, Dr. J. M. Lewis, assisted by Rev. Shimmer, of the German Evangelical church of Hinkley. The burial was at Oak Ridge.'
