Frey took the kingdom after Njord, and was called drot by the Swedes, a
nd they paid taxes to him. He was, like his father, fortunate in friends a
nd in good seasons. Frey built a great temple at Upsal, made it his chi
ef seat, and gave it all his taxes, his land, and goods. Then began the Up
sal domains, which have remained ever since. Then began in his days the Fr
ode- peace; and thenthere were good seasons, in all the land, which the S
wedes ascribed to Frey,so that he was more worshipped than the other god
s, as the people became much richer in his days by reason of the peace a
nd good seasons. His wife was called Gerd, daughter of Gymis, and their s
on was called Fjolne. Frey was called by another name, Yngve; and this na
me Yngve was considered long after in his race as a name of honour, so th
at his descendants have since been called Ynglinger. Frey fell into a sick
ness; and as his illness took the upper hand, his men took the plan of let
ting few approach him. In the meantime they raiseda great mound, in whi
ch they placed a door with three holes in it. Now when Frey died they bo
re him secretly into the mound, but told the Swedes he was alive; and th
ey kept watch over him for three years. They brought all the taxes into t
he mound, and through the one hole they put in the gold, through the oth
er the silver, and through the third the copper money that was paid. Pea
ce and good seasons continued. Parents: Njord.
He was married to Gerd about 255 in Sweden. Children were: Fjolne.
General Notes: Child - Fjolne
Fjolne, Yngve Frey's son, ruled thereafter over the Swedes and the Upsal d
omains. He was powerful, and lucky in seasons and in holding the peace. Fr
edfrode ruled then in Leidre, and between them there was great friendsh
ip and visiting. Once when Fjolne went to Frode in Sealand, a great fea
st was prepared for him, and invitations to it were sent all over the coun
try. Frode had a large house, in which there was a great vessel many el
ls high, and put together of great pieces of timber; and this vessel sto
od in a lower room. Above it was a loft, in the floor of which was an open
ing through which liquor was poured into this vessel. The vessel was fu
ll of mead, which was excessively strong. In the evening Fjolne, with h
is attendants, was taken into the adjoining loft to sleep. In the nig
ht he went out to the gallery to seek a certain place, and he was very sle
epy and exceedingly drunk. As he came back to his room hewent along the g
allery to the door of another left, went into it, and his foot slippin
g, he fell into the vessel of mead and was drowned. So says Thjodolf of Kv
ine: --
"In Frode's hall the fearful word,
The death-foreboding sound was heard:
The cry of fey denouncing doom,
Was heard at night in Frode's home.
And when brave Frode came, he found
Swithiod's dark chief, Fjolne, drowned.
In Frode's mansion drowned was he,
Drowned in a waveless, windlesssea." Parents: Yngve Frey and Gerd.
Children were: Swegde.

Walter Scott Wyman, 1874-1942, One of Maine’s Great Pioneers, By: William
B.Skelton
WALTER SCOTT WYMAN was born in West Waterville, Maine, May 6, 1874.
West Waterville was a town of about 1600 inhabitants, 1646 by the next
census. Its name was changed to Oakland in 1883, and it is as Oakland
that we shall know it.
He died in Augusta, November 15, 1942.
His life during the first twenty-five years was that of the typical boy
and young man of ambition and willingness to work. He attended the
schools in his native town and Coburn Classical Institute in Waterville,
seven miles away. In 1893, he entered Tufts College where, quite
prophetically, he specialized in Electrical Engineering. He left college
before his senior year. While there he worked between terms as
telegraph operator, a trade which he had learned before he entered
college. He was manager of the Bar Harbor office of the Western Union
summers. In term time, he ran a laundry agency and did whatever else he
could find to do.
There were hydro-electric plants scattered about the State of Maine in
1899and new ones were constantly coming into operation. For the most
part, they were small, isolated units. Necessarily, only communities
located on a waterfall could have a plant. Only soon after leaving Tufts,
he entered the service of the Waterville and Fairfield Railway and
Electric Company where he became general manager. He reMained there until
he purchased the electric plant inOakland in 1899, and entered upon his
life work. From that time, his life and that of the enterprise he created
were so interwoven that the story of the one is the story of the other.
The First Twenty-Five Years
To evaluate the vision and the courage which led a young man of
twenty-five, ambitious as laterdevelopments proved him to be, to stake
his future upon the step he then took and to stick to it through the
vicissitudes of the ensuing years, it must be remembered that the
Electric Industry as we know it had not arrived in 1899. Only during the
past twenty years had it shown any practical capabilities, and then to a
very modest extent. The storage battery, the electric motor, a primitive
arc light, and other devices had been invented, but put to little
practical use. Not until 1877 was the Brush lighting system developed.
This was first used for commercial indoor lighting in Wanamaker's
Philadelphia store, in 1878, and for commercial street lighting in
Cleveland and in New York,in 1879 and i880, respectively. Edison
patented his first incandescent lamp in 1879. The alternating current was
introduced into this Country from Europein 1885, and received with so
much concern for its safety that several States prohibited its use.
These all were primitive in character and performance. The incandescent
lamp was little more than a sealed bottle with a wire inside it. It could
not compete with gas light when the Welsbach mantle came into use late in
this period. Electric street lighting was dependent upon maintaining
contact between an upper and a lower carbon. An accepted way of renewing
contact on a dark street was to shake the upper carbon down by kicking
the pole.
There were hydro-electric plants scattered about the State of Maine in
1899 and new ones were constantly coming into operation. For the most
part, they were small, isolated units. Necessarily only communities
located on a waterfall could have a plant. Only such communities could
benefit from it, and that only according to the capability of the
particular power resources at the door of the community. If adequate the
year-around, the service would be constant; otherwise, interrupted or
curtailed as the water supply varied. Theseplants generally were
unprofitable, and offered little hope of becoming otherwise. In 1898, the
Lewiston & Auburn Electric Company, organized fourteen years before and
serving those two important indus

1 M Capt. Levi Gaylord
Born: - Wallingford, CT Baptized: Died: August 17, 1795 Buried:Spouse: Lois Barnes
General Notes: Husband - Benjamin Gaylord
Benjamin Gaylord is supposed to have been the oldest son of Joseph, second, and his wife, Mary Hickok, but no record of either his birth or death can as yet be found. He with his father, Joseph Gaylord, Jr., and uncle, John Gaylord, were among the first who settled in Wallingford, before stated.
It seems that lands were given by the “General Court” to those colonists who first settled in any town. Generally these settlements were at or near the Indian villages owing no doubt in part, at least, to the fact that at those places good land and plenty of water were to be found.
Here on the 18th of January 1729, Benjamin Gaylord married Jerusha Frisbie. A few years later he moved to Farmington, Connecticut, and a family tradition states that his wife, Jerusha, dying, he again married and removed to some town in the southern part of the State.
General Notes: Child - Capt. Levi Gaylord
Levi Gaylord, the first Levi of the Gaylord family, first child of Benjamin Gaylord and Jerusha Frisbie, was born in Wallingford, January 10th, 1730.
In 1753 or ‘54, Levi Gaylord married Lois Barnes, daughter of Jedediah and Abigail Barnes, of Bristol, then the “Society” or “Parish” of New Cambridge in Farmington, Connecticut. Hero he settled and resided for some years but about 1770 he purchased lands and removed to “The first Society of Waterbury” where he is believed to have resided until about 1785 when he removed to the State of New York. He seems to have been a man of some note and of sterling worth. He was a soldier in the French war of 1756-7. At the commencement of the Revolutionary, war he was appointed by Congress, in session at Philadelphia, “an Ensign of a company in the Army of the United Colonies.” This commission is dated June 10th, 1776, and is signed “John Hancock, President,” and “Charles Thompson, Secretary of Congress.” He was in active service for several years, and in April, 1780, was commissioned as Captain; which was at that day a great honor.
His long absence in the service and meager pay seems to have left him at the end of the war, in declining years and with limited means.
His oldest son, Levi second, having removed to Harpersfield, New York, (then Otsego county) Capt. Gaylord decided in 1784 or 1785 to remove there also, which he did, probably in 1785, and died there August 17th, 1795. His wife died September, 1809.
The children of Levi Gaylord first and Lois Barnes were Jerusha, born 1755; Levi, born March 20th, 1760; Jedediah, born March 12th, 1762; Joel, born December 8th, 1760; Lois, born April 6th, 1769, and Mamre, born 1775. There were four others viz: Abigail, Achsah, Daniel and Dorcas who died in childhood.
