Charles 'Martel', Mayor Of The Palace Of Austrasia ruled the Merovingian F
ranks from A.D. 719 to 741. He used only the title of Mayor of the Palac
e, but he actually had the power of a king. Most of the lawful Frankish ki
ngs of this period were weak. In 732, Charles defeated the invading Mosle
ms in the famous Battle of Tours near Poitiers. For repeatedly attacking t
he Moslems, Charles later received the title of Martel, meaning theHamme
r. He built an army of mounted men by seizing church estates. Charles supp
orted Saint Boniface in his reform of the Frankish church.

on of Pepin II (?) of Heristal and Aupais (?). Charles was ruler of the Fr
anks from 719, progenitor of the Carolingian dynasty, and grandfather to C
harlemagne. He was the illegitimate son of Pepin IIof Heristal and in 7
14 he was chosen Duke by the Austrasian (eastern) Franks, defeated the Neu
strain (western) Franks in 716, and in 719 became 'mayor ofthe palac
e' of Austrasia and real ruler of all the Frankish kingdom. He earned h
is nickname by his defeat of the Moors in a desperate battle at Tours, ne
ar Poiters, in 732, thus turning back the tide of Arab conquest in Europ
e, then drove the Saracens out of Burgundy and Languedoc (737). When he di
ed in 741 he left the Frankish kingdom to be divided between his sons Carl
oman and Pepin III the Short. Charles died in 741.

The Bald
Holy Roman emperor (875-77), and king of France (843-77), born in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. He was the fourth son of Holy Roman Emperor Louis I. His mother, Louis's second wife, was Judith of Bavaria. Judith's determination to secure a kingdom for her only son led to civil war with Louis's other two surviving sons, Holy Roman Emperor Lothair I and King Louis II of Germany. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Verdun in 843. Charles received the western portion of the empire, which from this time may be called the kingdom of France, or the West Frankish Kingdom. Charles was a weak ruler. The great nobles were rapidly becoming independent, and the Vikings pillaged the country without meeting much resistance from Charles, who preferred to buy them off.
Nevertheless, when Holy Roman Emperor Louis II died in 875, Charles received the imperial crown through the favor of Pope John VIII. Charles was succeeded as king of France by his son, Louis II (846-79), but the imperial throne was vacant until 881.

Holy Roman emperor (875-77), and king of France (843-77), born in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. He was the fourth son of Holy Roman Emperor Louis I. His mother, Louis's second wife, was Judith of Bavaria. Judith's determination to secure a kingdom for her only son led to civil war with Louis's other two surviving sons, Holy Roman Emperor Lothair I and King Louis II of Germany. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Verdun in 843. Charles received the western portion of the empire, which from this time may be called the kingdom of France, or the West Frankish Kingdom. Charles was a weak ruler. The great nobles were rapidly becoming independent, and the Vikings pillaged the country without meeting much resistance from Charles, who preferred to buy them off.
Nevertheless, when Holy Roman Emperor Louis II died in 875, Charles received the imperial crown through the favor of Pope John VIII. Charles was succeeded as king of France by his son, Louis II (846-79), but the imperial throne was vacant until 881.

Louis II (of Germany), (circa 806-76), king of Germany (843-76), the third son of Holy Roman Emperor Louis I. An active participant in the civil wars that marked the last ten years of his father's reign, he became ruler of all Germany east of the Rhine by the Treaty of Verdun in 843. Even after that, however, he continued to fight his kinsmen, winning the eastern part of Lorraine in 870. An able ruler, Louis strengthened government in his lands and patronized vernacular literature.
Louis II (the Stammerer), 846-79, son of CHARLES II, emperor of the West, was the king of France (r.877-79). His succession was shared by his sons Carloman and Louise III

The Normans were VIKINGS, or Norse, who settled in western France in the 9th and early 10th centuries. In 911, the weak French monarchy under the Carolingian CHARLES III (The Simple), granted the lands at the estuary of the Seine River to Rollo, known as Rolf the Ganger"(860? to 931?), a Norwegian Viking, and his Danish followers in return for an alliance against other Vikings, thus laying the foundation for the duchy of NORMANDY.
Rollo was a Viking who raided the coast of France each year (c.890-910) until Charles III gave him his daughter, Gisella, in marriage and all the land that became Normandie. Hence Rollo was the first Duke of Normandie.
Rollo had been outlawed by Harald Fairhair and this forced him to settle in Normandie.
Rollo, the Viking, was granted land in Northwestern France in 911 AD by Charles the Simple, King of France. Charles hoped that Rollo would defend his new land, barring the length of the Seine River to other Viking groups. Rollo remained faithful to Charles and he and his son quickly expanded the original land grant at the expense of neighboring French lords and guarded it well against Viking rivals. Even before Rollo's grandson, Richard, took over the domain in 942, the descendants of the Vikings had accepted Christianity, intermarried with the local population and adopted the French language. Already they were being called Normans, a contraction of Northmen, and there territory became known as Normandie.

Louis II (of Germany), (circa 806-76), king of Germany (843-76), the third son of Holy Roman Emperor Louis I. An active participant in the civil wars that marked the last ten years of his father's reign, he became ruler of all Germany east of the Rhine by the Treaty of Verdun in 843. Even after that, however, he continued to fight his kinsmen, winning the eastern part of Lorraine in 870. An able ruler, Louis strengthened government in his lands and patronized vernacular literature.
Louis II (the Stammerer), 846-79, son of CHARLES II, emperor of the West, was the king of France (r.877-79). His succession was shared by his sons Carloman and Louise III

King of the Franks
Charles III (879-929), king of France (898-922). He was the posthumous son of King Louis II (846-79). Charles claimed the throne after 893, during the reign of Odo, or Eudes (858-98), count of Paris, but was not acknowledged king until 898. His reign was plagued by raids of Scandinavian Vikings, to whom he finally ceded (911) much of what later was called Normandie. Gave his daughter, Gisella, to Rollo, the Viking, in order to stop the raids on the coast. Gave the coast to Rollo to protect. Rollo thus became the first Duke of Normandie. Charles was deposed in 922 by his chief vassals and imprisoned in Peronne from 923 until his death.

PORTAGE LAKE - Jerry P. Caron, 36, died July 26, 2007, in Castle Hill, as a result of a motor vehicle accident. He was born Feb. 11, 1971, in Presque Isle, the son of Gary and Liette (Theriault) Caron. Jerry was a graduate of Ashland High School and attended Northern Maine Community College. He is survived by his mother, Liette Caron of Portage Lake; his father, Gary Caron of Clackamas, Ore.; one sister, Mary Casey and her husband, John, of Ashland; his niece and nephew, John Robert Casey and Samantha Casey, both of Ashland.
