Upon his marriage he inherited the manor of Thalk, co. Stafford; his father-in-law having exchanged Thalk for Stoneley, and half the manor of Balterley, with his cousin Adam, made choice of Stoneley for his seat, and in honour of his lady, and the great antiquity of her family (of nobel Saxon descent), who flourished in England many years before the Conquest, assumed the surname Stanley, and became the immediate founder of the Stanleys. SIR LUKE DE POYNINGS, son and heir, presumably of age in September 1252, was a knight in January 1265/6. On 25 January 1272/3 he quitclaimed to Lewes Priory all right in the church of Pyecombe (Sussex). He married, before 18 November 1276, Hawise, widow of Reynold DF VAUTORT, of Harberton, Devon. Sir Luke appears to have been living in July 1293, but to have died before 8 June 1294. His widow died shortly before 24 October 1299. [Complete Peerage X:658-9, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
