Sir John le Blount, thirty-nine years of age when he succeeded his
brother in 1337, was in the service of the Earl of Lancaster, and had
obtained from the nobleman a grant for life of the manor of Passingham,
co. Northampton; he had also lands from the earl in Holland and Duffield,
co. Derby, and Tiberton,in Gloucestershire. He had two wives, 1st,
Isolda, daughter and heir of Sir Thomas de Mountjoy, by whom he acquired
a large accession of estates, and hadissue, John and Walter. Sir John
Blount's 2nd wife was Eleanor, 2nd daughterof John Beauchamp, of Hache,
co. Somerset, and widow of John Meriet, of Meriet, in the same shire. By
this lady he left at his decease, 32nd Henry III Anno 1358,* a son, the
heroic Sir Walter Blount.

Served John of Gaunt in all his campaigns and later died fighting for
Henry IV at Shrewsbury. There was a rebel alliance lead by Henry Percy,
of Northumberland who felt hard done by King Henry, and wanted to
reinstate Richard III. Sir Walter le Blount was immortalized by
Shakespeare.

Sir Walter Blount, so celebrated for his martial prowess in the warlike
times of Edward III, Richard II, and Henry IV, and immortalized by the
muse of Shakespeare for his devotion, even unto death, to King Henry. Sir
Walter fell at the battle of Shrewsbury, 22 June 1403, wherein, being
standard bearer, he was arrayed in the same armour as his royal master
and was slain, according to the poet, in single combat by the Earl of
Douglas,who had supposed he was contending with the king himself.
In 1367 we find SirWalter accompanying the Black Prince and his brother,
John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster, upon the expedition into Spain to
aid Peter the Cruel, King of Castile, and assisting on 3 April in that
year at the battle of Najore, which restored Peter to his throne.
Thenceforward for a a series of years, indeed, until the prince's
decease, he appears to have been immediately and confidentially attached
to the duke, having chosen his wife, whom he married about the year 1372,
from amongst the ladies in the suite of Constantia of Castile,eldest
daughter of Peter, and his successor on the throne, who became the royal
consort of John of Gaunt, when the princess visited England in 1369. In
1398, the duke granted 100 marks a year to Sir Walter for the good
services which had been rendered to him by the knight and his wife, the
Lady Sancia. The Lady Sancia's maiden designation was Donna Sancha de
Ayala; she was the daughter of Don Diego Gomez de Toledo, alcalde mayor
and chief justice of Toledo, and notario mayor, or principal secretary,
of the kingdom of Castile, by his wife, Inez Alfon de Ayala, one of the
most ancient and illustrious houses in Spain. John of Gaunt, at his
decease, appointed Sir Walter one of his executors and bequeathed him a
legal of 100 points, £6 6s. 8d.
In 1374, Sir Walter's half-brother, Sir John Blount, of Sodington,
conveyed to him numerous manors, which he had inherited from his mother,
Isolda, heiress of the Mountjoyfamily. In 1381, he became propriety, by
purchase, of the large estates of the Bakepuiz family in counties. Derby,
Stafford, Leicester, and Hertford. In 1385 he obtained a charter for a
fair and free warren in his demesne lands atBarton, and other manors in
Derbyshire. In 1399 he was ranger of Needwood Forest and knight of the
shire for co. Derby. By his wife, Donna Sancha, who survived him and
lived until 1418, he left issue, Sir John, Sir Thomas, Sir James, Peter,
Constantia, and Anne. Sir Walter was succeeded by his eldest son, Sir
John Blount, K.G.

Gilbert succeeded his father, and was in the expedition made into Scotland in 26th of Edward I; and having been implicated in the murder of Piers Gaveston, obtained a pardon in the 7th of Edward II, and in 1314 was constituted Governor of the town and castle of Gloucester. Afterwards he was engaged in the insurrection of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, against the power of the two Hugh de Spencers, and he was compelled, in order to save his life and preserve his estates, to enter into a recognizance to œ2000, with one ton of wine. Upon accession of Edward III, however, that obligation was cancelled. Moreover, being knight banneret, he became active for the King in military affairs, and there was due him œ116-3s-8d for services of himself and his men-at-arms. In the 4th of Edward III he was Justice of South Wales, and was summoned to Parliament as a baron, and from that period to the 17th of Edward III, 1330-1344. He obtained a grant in fee of the castles and lordships of Blenleveny and Bulkedinas in 1346, and died the same year. He was the 1st Baron Talbot.

The cold hard fact was that marriages among gentry during this period were generally only objected to if the parties objected (one could endow whatever church, priory or house with lands to make up for the sins [e. g., Holy Trinity (Abbaye-aux-Dames) and St. Stephen (Abbaye-aux-Hommes) in Caen]).
This is exemplified in that James de Audeley held the wardship and marriage of the heir of de Mascy (Hamon). James died, endowing the guardianship on his mistress, Alice (de Mohun) (de Clinton) de Beauchamp, who wedded Hamon de Mascy to her daughter Isabel de Beauchamp. The story goes that she died on her wedding night before consumation. Alice then married Hamon to the next daughter, Mary de Beauchamp. He later [after four children] divorced her on the grounds that the marriage was not lawful (you get the gist), and married Joan de Clinton (! -- still unlawful, technically).
