SIR ROBERT FITZPAYN, of Llanvair Discoed in Nether Gwent, Okeford
Fitzpaine, Chelborough, Worth, and Wraxall, Dorset, Staple Fitzpaine,
Cheddon Fitzpaine, Cary Fitzpaine, and Bridghampton, Somerset, Poole
Keynes and Stourton, Wilts, &c., son and heir of Sir Robert FiTZPAYN, of
the same (who died shortly before 27 April 1281) (a), by Roberge, his
wife. In July 1277 he proffered service---himself and three others---pro
patre suo infirmo ut dicit, against Llewelyn. He was aged 26 and more, or
27, at his father's death. The King took his homage, and he had livery of
his father's lands, 27 May 1281. He was with the King in the Army of
Wales in 1282, at the battle of Falkirk, 22 July 1298, and in the Army of
Scotland in 1300, 1303, and 1306, being at the siege of Carlaverock in
July 1300, and Marshal of the King's Army citra mare Scocle in 1303. He
was summoned for Military Service from 24 May 1282 to 30 June 1314, to
attend the King at Salisbury, 26 January 1296/7, to attend the
Coronation., 18 January 1307/8, to a Council, 8 January 1308/9, and to
Parliament from 6 February 1298/9 to 24 October 1314, by writs directed
Roberto filio Pagani, whereby,he is held to have become LORD FITZPAYN.As
Robertus filius Pagani dominus de Launver, he took part in the Barons'
Letter to the Pope, 12 February 1300 /1. He was appointed Constable of
Corfe Castle, 20 March 1304/5, during pleasure.
He married Isabel, sister and coheirof Sir Richard DE CLIFFORD, and
daughter of Sir John DE CLIFFORD, both of Frampton-on-Severn, co.
Gloucester. In 1305 John de Maundeville granted the manor of Marshwood
and the hundred of Whitchurch, Dorset, to him and Isabel his wife, and
his heirs. On 12 March 1307/8 the King granted him the custody of the
manors of Stogursey and Rodway, and the hundred of Cannington, Somerset,
then in the King's hand. He was Constable of Winchester Castle, 16 March
1307/8 to 15 May 1314. Steward of the King's Household, 11 March 1307/8
to 14 December 1310. He was sent, with Otes de Graunson and others, on a
mission to the Pope, in March 1308 /9. On 9 February 1309/10 the King
granted him the manor of Norton St. Walery, Hants, for life, but on 16
September 1312 gave him, in its stead, the manor of Kingsbury and the
hundred of Horethorne, &c., Somerset, also for life. He was appointed
Keeper of the Forest South of Trent, 7 December 1311, during pleasure. In
May 1313 he accompanied the King to France. He died 22 August 1315. On 18
October 1315 his widow had livery of the manors which she and her husband
had held jointly, her fealty being respited. Shewas living in 13I9.
(a) "Robertus filius Pagani". Heir, Robert his son, aged26 and more, or
27. The elder Robert did homage, 19 June 1245, and had livery of the
lands of Roger fitz Payn, his father, and he again did homage, as one of
the heirs of Alvred de Lincoln, 11 July 1264, when he had livery of the
manor and advowson of Winterbourne (St. Martin), Dorset, 3 knights' fees
and 1/5 and 1/2 of a knight's fee, as his purparty of the lands of the
said Alvred; on 28 January 1277/8 he had livery of a moiety of the lands
of his aunt,Aubrey, sister of the same Alvred. His father, Roger fitz
Payn, died shortlybefore 14 October 1237, when (and 18 Oct) Roger's
widow, Margery, had liveryof her dower; she, who was living 25 July
1245, was sister of the said Alvred, and 1st daughter of another Alvred
de Lincoln, by Maud, his wife. Roger was son and heir of Robert fitz
Payn, who, with his sons, Roger and Robert, hada safe conduct, 11
September 1215.

JOHN CLIFFORD, Knight of the Garder, 7th Lord Clifford, hereditary
Sheriff of Westmorland, only son and heir, was born about 1388 (aged
three at his father's death). He was summoned to Parliament from 21
September 1412. He took part in a great tournament at Carlisle between
six English and six Scottish Knights, as also in the French war. He was
K.G. 3 May 1421. He was married between August 1403 and November 1412,
probably in 1404, to ELIZABETH PERCY, daughter of Henry Percy [Harry
Hotspur], Knt., (descendant of King Edward III), byElizabeth (descendant
of King Edward I), daughter of Edmund Mortimer, 3rd Earl of March [see
PERCY 10 for her ancestry]. They had two sons and one daughter. JOHN
CLIFFORD, 7th Lord Clifford, was slain at the siege of Meaux in France,
on 13 March 1421/2, and was said to have been buried at Bolton Priory.
His widow was married for the second time in 1426 to RALPH NEVILLE, 2nd
Earl of Westmorland (died 3 November 1484). She died on 26 October 1437,
and was buried at Staindrop, Durham.

THOMAS CLIFFORD, 8th Lord Clifford, hereditary Sheriff of Westmorland,
only son and heir, was born on 25 March 1414 (aged seven years and
forty-three weeks at father's death). He was summoned to Parliament
1436-1453.He was married after March 1424 to JOAN DACRE, daughter of
Thomas Dacre, 6thLord Dacre of Gilsland, by Philippe (descendant of King
Edward I), daughter of Ralph de Neville, Earl of
Westmorland [see DACRE 8 for her ancestry]. They had four sons and five
daughters. She predeceased her husband. He was summoned to Parliament
from 19 December 1436. THOMAS CLIFFORD, 8th Lord Clifford, a Lancastrian,
was slain fighting for King Henry VI at the first Battle of St. Albans on
22 May 1455, and was buried in the Abbey church there (former M.I.).

EDMUND SUTTON (or DUDLEY), Knight, of Dudley Castle and Gatcombe, son and
heir apparent, was married for the first time to JOYCE TIPTOFT, third and
youngest daughter of John Tiptoft, Lord Tiptoft, by his second wife,
Joyce (descendant of King Edward I), younger daughter and co-heiress of
Edward Cherleton, Lord Cherleton [see CHERLETON 10 for her ancestry]. She
was sister of John Tiptoft, Earl of Worcester. Through this alliance, the
Lords Dudley became co-heirs of the Baronies of Tibetot and of Cherleton.
They had two sons and a daughter. He was married for the second time to
MAUD CLIFFORD, widow, with two daughters, of John Harington, Knight, and
daughter of Thomas de Clifford, 8th Lord Clifford (descendant of King
Edward III), by Joan (descendant of King Edward I), daughter of Thomas
Dacre, Lord Dacre of Gilsland [see CLIFFORD 7 forher ancestry]. They had
seven sons and five daughters. SIR EDMUND SUTTON died between 6 July 1483
and 30 Sep. 1487 v.p. 2

Henry II (5 March 1133 – 6 July 1189) ruled as Count of Anjou, Duke of Nor
mandy, and as King of England (1154–1189) and, at various times, controll
ed parts of Wales, Scotland, eastern Ireland, and western France. His sobr
iquets include "Curt Mantle" (because of the practical short cloaks he wor
e), "Fitz Empress," and sometimes "The Lion of Justice," whichhad also ap
plied to his grandfather Henry I. He ranks as the first of the Plantagen
et or Angevin Kings.
Following the disputed reign of King Stephen, Henry's reign saw efficie
nt consolidation. Henry II has acquired a reputation as one of England's g
reatest medieval kings.
He was born on 5 March , 1133, at Le Mans to the Empress Matilda and her s
econd husband, Geoffrey the Fair, Count of Anjou. Brought up in Anjo
u, he visited England in 1149 to help his mother in her disputed cla
im to the English throne.
Prior to coming to the throne he already controlled Normandy and Anj
ou on the continent; his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine on May 18, 11
52 added her holdings to his, including Touraine, Aquitaine, and Gascon
y. He thus effectively became more powerful than the king of France — wi
th an empire (the Angevin Empire) that stretched from the Solway Firth alm
ost to the Mediterranean and from the Somme to the Pyrenees. As king, he w
ould make Ireland a part of his vast domain. He also maintained lively com
munication with the Emperor of Byzantium Manuel I Comnenus.
In August 1152, Henry, previously occupied in fighting Eleanor's ex-husba
nd Louis VII of France and his allies, rushed back to her, and they spe
nt severalmonths together. Around the end of November 1152 they parted: H
enry went to spend some weeks with his mother and then sailed for Englan
d, arriving on 6 January 1153. Some historians believe that the couple's f
irst child, William, Count of Poitiers, was born in 1153.
During Stephen's reign the barons had subverted the state of affairs to un
dermine the monarch's grip on the realm; Henry II saw it as his first ta
sk to reverse this shift in power. For example, Henry had castles which t
he barons had built without authorisation during Stephen's reign torn dow
n, and scutage, a fee paid by vassals in lieu of militaryservice, beca
me by 1159 a central feature of the king's military system. Record keepi
ng improved dramatically in order to streamline this taxation.
Henry II established courts in various parts of England, and first institu
ted theroyal practice of granting magistrates the power to render legal d
ecisions on a wide range of civil matters in the name of the Crown. His re
ign saw the production of the first written legal textbook, providing t
he basis of today's"Common Law".
By the Assize of Clarendon (1166), trial by jury became the norm. Since t
he Norman Conquest jury trials had been largely replaced by trial by orde
al and "wager of battel" (which English law did not abolish until 1819). P
rovision of justice and landed security was further toughened in 1176 wi
th the Assize of Northampton, a build on the earlier agreements at Clarend
on.This reform proved one of Henry's major contributions to the social hi
story of England. As a consequence of the improvements in the legal syste
m, the power of church courts waned. The church, not unnaturally, oppos
ed this and found its most vehement spokesman in Thomas Becket, the Archbi
shop of Canterbury,formerly a close friend of Henry's and his Chancello
r. Henry had appointed Becket to the archbishopric precisely because he wa
nted to avoid conflict.
The conflict with Becket effectively began with a dispute over whether t
he secular courts could try clergy who had committed a secular offence. He
nry attempted to subdue Becket and his fellow churchmen by making them swe
ar to obey the "customs of the realm", but controversy ensued over what co
nstituted these customs, and the church proved reluctant to submit

JOHN CLIFFORD, Knight of the Garder, 7th Lord Clifford, hereditary
Sheriff of Westmorland, only son and heir, was born about 1388 (aged
three at his father's death). He was summoned to Parliament from 21
September 1412. He took part in a great tournament at Carlisle between
six English and six Scottish Knights, as also in the French war. He was
K.G. 3 May 1421. He was married between August 1403 and November 1412,
probably in 1404, to ELIZABETH PERCY, daughter of Henry Percy [Harry
Hotspur], Knt., (descendant of King Edward III), byElizabeth (descendant
of King Edward I), daughter of Edmund Mortimer, 3rd Earl of March [see
PERCY 10 for her ancestry]. They had two sons and one daughter. JOHN
CLIFFORD, 7th Lord Clifford, was slain at the siege of Meaux in France,
on 13 March 1421/2, and was said to have been buried at Bolton Priory.
His widow was married for the second time in 1426 to RALPH NEVILLE, 2nd
Earl of Westmorland (died 3 November 1484). She died on 26 October 1437,
and was buried at Staindrop, Durham.
