General Notes: Husband - Edgar England
Alias:<ALIA> Edgar the /Peaceful/
King Edgar or Eadgar I (c. 942 – July 8, 975) was the younger son of Ki
ng Edmund I of England. He won the nickname, "thePeaceable", but in fa
ct was a stronger king than his elder brother, Edwy, from whom he took t
he kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia in 958. Edgar was acclaimed king nor
th of the Thames by a conclave of Mercian nobles in 958, but officially su
cceeded when Edwy died in October 959. Immediately Edgar recalled Dunst
an (eventually canonised as St. Dunstan) from exile and made him successiv
ely Bishop of Worcester, then of London and finally Archbishop of Canterbu
ry, The allegation that Dunstan at first refused to crown Edgar becau
se he disapproved of his way of life, is a discreet reference in popular h
istories to Edgar's mistress Wulfthryth, a nun at Wilton who bore him a da
ughter Eadgyth in 961. Dunstan remained Edgar's advisor throughout his rei
gn, nevertheless.
Edgar's reign was a peaceful one, and it is probably fair to say that it s
aw the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of the English at its height. Although other pr
evious kings have been recorded as the founders of 'England', it was Edg
ar who consolidated this. By the end of Edgar's reign there was little cha
nce of it receding back into its constituent parts, as it had beg
un to do during the reign of Edwy.
The Monastic Reform Movement that restored the Benedictine Rule toEngland
's undisciplined monastic communities saw its height during the time of Du
nstan, Aethelwold and Oswald. However, the extent and importance of the mo
vement is still debated amongst academics.
Edgar was crowned at Bath, but not until 973, an imperial ceremony plann
ed not as the initiation, but as theculmination of his reign, a move th
at must have taken a great deal of preliminary diplomacy. This service, de
vised by Dunstan himself, and celebrated with a poem in the Anglo-Saxon Ch
ronicle forms the basis of the present-day British coronation ceremony. T
he symbolic coronation was an important step; otherkings of Britain ca
me and gave their allegiance to Edgar shortly afterwards at Chester. Six k
ings in Britain, including the kings of Scotland and of Strathclyde, pledg
ed their faith that they would be the king's henchmen on sea and land. Lat
er chroniclers made the kings into eight, all plying the oars of Edgar's s
tate barge on the River Dee. Perhaps not, but the main outlines of the "su
bmission at Chester" appear true.
Edgar had several children. He died on July 8, 975 at Winchester, and w
as buried at Glastonbury Abbey. He left twosons, the eldest named Edwar
d, the son of his first wife Ethelfleda (not to be confused with Ethelfled
a, Lady of the Mercians), and Ethelred, the youngest, the child of his sec
ond wife Elfrida. He was succeeded by his oldest son, King Edward the Mart
yr.
From Edgar’s death to the Norman Conquest there was not a single successi
on to the throne that was not contended. Although perhaps a simplificatio
n, Edgar’s death did seem to be the beginning of the end forAnglo-Saxon E
ngland that resulted in three 11th century successful conquests, two Dani
sh and one Norman.

Alias:<ALIA> Ethelred the Unready /Æðelræd/
Ethelred the Unready (c. 968 – April 23, 1016), also know as Ethelred II a
nd Æðelræd Unræd was King of England(978 – 1013, and 1014 – 1016).
ccording to William of Malmesbury, Ethelred defecated in the baptismal fo
nt as a child, which led St. Dunstan to prophesy that the English monarc
hy would be overthrown during Ethelred's reign. This story is, however, al
most certainly a fabrication.
Ethelred succeeded to the throne aged about 10 following the death of h
is father King Edgar and subsequent murder of his half-brother Edward t
he Martyr. His nickname "The Unready" does not mean that he was ill-prepar
ed, but derives from the Anglo-Saxon unrædmeaning "without counsel" or "i
ndecisive". This is also a pun on his name, Æðelræd, which means "Well adv
ised".
Ethelred married firstly to Ælflaed, daughter of Thored, the ealdorm
an of Northumbria; she was the mother of four sons, including Edmund Irons
ide. In 997, he remarried to Ælfgifu, daughter of ealdorman Aethelberht, w
ho gave him two sons, Edwig and Edgar. His third and final marriage, in 10
02, was to Emma of Normandy, whose grandnephew, William I of England, wou
ld later use this relationship as the basis of his claim on the throne.

Conflict with the Danes
England had experienced a long period of peace after the reconquest of t
he Danelaw in the first half of the 10thCentury. However in 991 Ethelr
ed was faced with a Viking fleet larger than any since Guthrum's "Summer A
rmy" a century earlier. This fleet was led by Olaf Trygvasson, a Norwegi
an with ambitions to reclaim his country from Danish domination. After ini
tial military setbacks including the defeat of his Ealdorman Byrhtno
th at the Battle of Maldon, Ethelred was able to come to terms with Ola
f, who returned to Norway to gain his kingdom with mixed success. While th
is arrangement won him some respite, England faced further depredations fr
om Viking raids. Ethelred fought these off, but in many cases followed t
he practice of earlier kings including Alfred the Great in buying them o
ff by payment of what was to become known as Danegeld.
Ethelred ordered the massacre ofthe Danes living in England on St Brice
's Day (November 13) 1002, in response to which Sweyn Haraldsson start
ed a series of determined campaigns to conquer England. In this he succeed
ed, but after his victory, he lived for only another five weeks.
[edit]
Death and legacy
In 1013, Ethelred fled to Normandy, seeking protection by his brother-in-l
aw, Robert of Normandy, when England was over-run by Sweyn Haraldsson of D
enmark and his forces. He returned in February, 1014, following the dea
th of Sweyn Haraldsson. Ethelred died on April23, 1016, in London, whe
re he was buried. He was succeeded by his son, Edmund II of England.
Despite the steady stream of Viking attacks, Ethelred's reignwas far fr
om the disaster described by chroniclers writing well after the event. Eth
elred introduced major reforms to the machinery of government in Anglo-Sax
on England, and is responsible for the introduction of Shire Reeves or She
riffs. The quality of the coinage, always a good indicator of the prevaili
ng economic conditions, remained very high during his reign.

uered Strathclyde but conceded his rights on the territory to King Malco
lm I of Scotland. In exchange they signed a treaty of mutual military supp
ort. Edmund thus established a policy of safe borders and peaceful relatio
nships with Scotland. During his reign, the revival of monasteries in Engl
and began.
Edmund was murdered in 946 by Leofa, an exiled thief. Hehad been havi
ng a party in Pucklechurch, when he spotted Leofa in the crowd. After t
he outlaw refused to leave, the king and his advisors fought Leofa. Edmu
nd and Leofa were both killed. He was succeeded as king by his brother Edr
ed, king from 946 until 955.
Edmund's sons later ruled England as:
* Edwin of England, King from 955 until 957, king of only Wessex and K
ingdom of Kent from 957 until his death on October 1, 959.
* Edgar of England, king of only Mercia and Northumbria from 957 unt
il his brother's death in 959, then king ofEngland from 959 until 975.

General Notes: Husband - James Jepson
...His name was spelled Gypson in this marraige record.
...If the birthdate given for James Jepson 8 Feb. 1752 in the Monroe records is correct, she apparently died at his birth or shortly thereafter. However, it is very probable that if he is actually her son, his birthdate is incorrectly given, at least with regard to the year or else his father made intentions to marry again very quickly after his first wife's death information taken from "The Descendents of William Jepson"By Alan Hawkins
General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth
...She apparently died shortly after the birth of her second son in 1790 and before her husbands second marriage in 1793
General Notes: Child - Henry Jipson
...Little is known of Henry's life. He was a resident of Lee Plantation (Now Monroe) in 1815 when the direct tax lists him with property valued at $104 and he was taxed $.69.
...He was in Monroe, Maine in 1828 when his brother quickclamed to him and the census of 1830 find him in Monrow.
...1850 he was in Franklin, Maine with his family.
General Notes: Child - William Jipson
...his gravestone gives his age at death as 84 years.
...The old William Jipson place is long gone and is almost impossable to find without some one to guide you there. The cemetery is off the TransAlpine-Long Ridge Road on Tripp Hill, just a short distance from the Lincoln-Burlington town line.
...On July 19, 2002 I visited the cemetery off the Trans Alpine-Long Ridge Road on Tripp Hill, with the help of Ellis and Gail Jipson of Burlington, Maine as of this date the way to the cemetery is marked with orange flaging and someone is cleaning the cemetery lot of trees and brush.
