The Dwnn surname hails originally from Carmarthen and Pembroke in West Wal
es. The earliest and possible originator of the surname was Gruffudd Dw
nn (ca 1200)of Carmarthenshire. His family links back to the Welsh Prince
s, while many of his descendents married into the leading families of t
he era.
A possible explanation of the creation of the name Dwnn according to Lew
ys Dwnn the historian and genealogist ….
“Gruffudd was Gentleman Usher to King John, that hebore a very strong b
ow in England and shot with a broad arrow and that on the Monarch observi
ng him shoot he exclaimed “well done Gruffudd”. “
The name was taken by Gruffudd as his surname and the spelling was later d
eveloped into many different variants. eg Don, Done, Doune, Donn, Donne, D

Although a very nice story, i can assure you that the surname DON is not d
erived from the surname Dwnn.
The word DON is to be found as a root in just about every language in t
he world to describe water. In Ireland it denotes a Church or Fort as in '
DONAGHPATRICK' in County Meath meaning 'Church of Padraig', or DONARD in W
exford meaning High Fort.
In England it also denotes a hill usually associated with a farm,dwelli
ng or fort.
Please change this as it is misleading to researchers
I beg to differ - the surname Don in the West Wales area in the 16th C / 1
7th C is with any doubt one of the many derivative spellings of Dwnn.
Of course this is not the only source of surname Don, as with many surnam
es the source can be attributed to many different places.
There are many documents in the Carmarthen Record Office and the Nation
al Library of Wales that provide the evidence to support the above. One no
table example was the Don-Lee family who lived in several places includi
ng Abercyfor, Llanyfaelog, Carmarthenshire. The Don part of their name w
as from Elizabeth Dwnn who inherited Abercyfor from her father Sir Edwa
rd Dwnn. Her grandson Edward Don Lee was very much a leading charact
er of the area in the 16th C, he was High Sheriff of Carmathen in 1588 a
nd 1594, and MP for Carmarthen Borough 1584-1587.

MILO - Mary Graves Heath, daughter of Gordon Perley and Mary Ann (Applebee) Graves, died Aug. 20, 2007, surrounded by her family, at Cummings Health Care Facility, Howland, after a short illness. Mary was born Sept. 15, 1915, in Brownville Junction. She loved the years she spent growing up on the family farm that her grandparents had purchased in the late 1800s. She was a member of the graduating Class of 1933 of Brownville Junction High School. On Feb. 17, 1939, she married Winfield "Bill" H. Heath of Milo. Mary worked at Eastern Maine Medical Center as a nursing technician for about 15 years, a job she truly enjoyed, but most of her life was spent raising her two children at her Milo home and caring for her father-in-law, who lived there as well. Her home was always full of neighborhood children. Her spare time was spent planting and caring for her perennial flower gardens and enjoying the outdoors, picking apples and strawberries, sitting on her favorite rock at Schoodic Point, and spending time at camp on Schoodic Lake. She often accompanied her husband while he fished and the family went on picnics. She enjoyed eating out and driving her car, which she began to do after learning to drive at about age 54. She drove others to appointments when they had no transportation and shared rides to work in Bangor with those who could not drive. Her main leisure pastime was reading and she read many books every week, a faithful patron of the local library. Even after her vision was poor, she read books by the hour with a bright light to read by. She is survived by one son, William Gordon Heath of Medway; one daughter and her husband, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Lufkin and Gerald of East Millinocket; one brother, John Graves and wife, Joyce, of Bangor; a granddaughter, Lori Jean Melvin and husband, Scott, of Orrington; two great-granddaughters, Courtney Jean and Olivia Mary Melvin of Orrington; and a grandson, George Lufkin of Medway. She is also survived by many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends, including a special friend, Lori L'Heureux. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Winfield in 1968; two sisters, Nella Holmberg of Worcester, Mass., and Phoebe Phinney of Brownville Junction; and four brothers, Clouse; infant brothers, twins, Don and Roy and Walter, all of Brownville Junction. Friends are invited to call 2-5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Lary Funeral Home, Milo, where funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, with the Rev. Michele St. Cyr officiating. East Millinocket - Esther Mae (Friel) Appleby, 65, died Feb. 11, 1980, at a Lincoln nursing home. She was born April 12, 1914, in Sherman, the daughter of Frank and Alice (McNally) Friel. She was the widow of Malcolm Appleby, and was a member of the Legion of Mary of St. Peters Catholic Church, and the Senior Citizens Club of East Millinocket. She is survived by two sons, George Walsh and Frank Walsh, both of Millinocket; three daughters, Anna McDunnah and Joey Stratton, both of East Millinocket, and Beverly King of Bangor; one sister, Stella Dudley of Millinocket; 10 grandchildren; four great - grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 1 p.m. in St. Peters Catholic Church. Friends may call at the James G. Dowd Funeral Home, 17 Western Ave., East Millinocket, Wednesday, 3 to 9 p.m. St. Anne's Circle and Little Flower Circle, Daughters of Isabella, will say the rosary Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Spring burial will be in the Millinocket Cemetery.

Eleanor was educated in Worcester schools, was a graduate of Denison University in Ohio and Hahnmann Hospital School of Nursing in Worcester, Mass. She worked as a registered nurse for many years, retiring from Eastern Maine Medical Center in 1983.
Eleanor is survived by four children, Barbara Paisley and her husband, George, of Jacksonville Fla, Jane Willett and her husband, Richard, of Wells, Kathleen Keshvari and her husband, Parviz of Port Orange, Fla, and Thomas Little and his wife, Rhonda, of Millinocket; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren,2 great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
