From the "Sherman Genealogy" by Thomas Townsend Sherman, pub: 1920, pp.80/81
Anne Sherman, bap. at Dedham, Aug. 7, 1575. (Reg. 50, p. 415.) Record states that Susan Sherman, daughter of Henry Sherman was then baptized. This is either an error for Anne, or else Susan must have died young, as she is not mentioned in will of either parent.
Anne was probably born at this time. M. at Dedham, Jan. 8, 1595, Anthony whiting, of Dedham, clothier. (Reg. 50, p. 414.) He died 1629.
His will, dated Sept. 1, 1628, proved July 14, 1629. (Consistory Court of London, Book Bellamy, Leaf 326.) To wife Anne lands for life, after her death to son Symon he to pay son Anthony [Art's note: pound sign - hereafter written L-] L-30. and L-40. To daughter Phebe. To wife Anne tenement in occupation of Gilbert Hills for her life, after that to son John. To son Anthony and Mary his wife, two fields bought of the widow Shereman, and after their deaths, to Anthony's heirs. To son Symon and daughter Susan Whiting and daughter Phebe. "My two brothers Henry and Ezechiell Shereman shall sell my house and lands in Langham." To son John at twenty-three. "To my daughter Anne Loveran five pounds." To poor of Dedham and of Stanaway. Wife executrix. Witnesses Lyonell Chewte and Henry Shereman. (Reg. 50, p. 387.)
His widow soon married Thomas Wilson, of Dedham, butcher, whose will dated Jan. 30, 1631, was proved May 24, 1631. He mentions his wife Anne and "Mr. Anthony Whiting, Phebe Whiting and the rest of my wife's children." "I make my brother in law Henry Sherman, senior, and Thomas Wood of Dedham Executors." (Reg. 50, p. 388.)
She, Anne Wilson, died 1638. Her will dated Sept. 15, 1638, proved Dec. 13, 1638. (Com. Of London for Essex and Herts. File for 1638-9, No. 152.) Describes her as Anne Wilson of Dedham, Essex, widow. To son Anthony Whiting of Bentlie, clerk; to son John Whiting and daughter Susan Cole. To my daughter Phebe Barnard of New England ten pounds and to her children born here before she went over vizt. John and Samuel, to each of them twenty shillings apiece. To daughter Cole's four children, son John Whiting and Anne his daughter. My nephew Symon Whiting deceased. Jane Whiting his daughter. My nephews Anthony and Thomas, sons of my son Anthony. The widow Goffe [probably Margaret Sherman, widow of John Goffe.] My brother Edmund Sherman of Colchester. "My loving brother Ezekiel Sherman," Executor. (Reg. 50, p. 390.)

"When about 18 years of age he volunteered to defend the border in the French and Indian War; he was sent up into the northern border of VT.; taken prisioner by the French who were in command on Lake Champlain; confined on a sloop all summer; in the fall was exchanged, and taken with fever; found nearly dead by his father who tied him upon a horse and made their way through the forrest to Massachusetts. He emigrated to Barre with his family of two sons and several daughters; settled upon the farm on the East Hill where the beautiful granite is now quarried." He was a first Lieut. in the Revolution. "Extensive research undertaken by my Uncle, Brigadier Charles Sherman,
records the following note:
Bezaleel Sherman of Milford, Conn., America, was the son of the Reverend John Sherman, by his first wife and is described as "Merchant". In 1676, he came home to England before sailing from Gravesend to India. From 1676 - 1680, Bezaleel Sherman was Surgeon to the East India Company, Fort St George, Madras, where there is a Monumental Inscription to him in St Mary's cemetery, shared with John William Sherman M.D. (1797 - 1866), Physician General to the Madras Army (Indian Medical Service) from 1852 to 1856.
See Monumental Inscriptions, Vol. 3 Madras "List of inscriptions on tombs or monuments in Madras".

My Uncle devoted a lot of time as his hobby to researching our lineage during the 70s and 80s. He has left me all his research and papers and I want to keep his work going.
He had a very distinguished career in the Army and then in public life, and he would be delighted to know that his work had received a wider audience and had even crossed the pond! He was 90 when he died. My father, his surviving brother, is 86 and will also be thrilled to know about this.
I have actually input all my Uncle's data into FTM. His work was all paper based !

Nick wrote again:
Bezaleel's appointment in November 24th 1675 is confirmed as surgeon at fort St George, Madras on the same salary of 30 l per annum as the other surgeons. His fare is to be paid for by the EIC as is the fare of his wife, but he must pay himself for the fare and wages of his apprentice, John Hill.
He arrived August 7th 1676. He subscribed a donation of 10 pags to the building of a church in Madraspatam. There are references to his children but nothing which identifies them. He died on August 25th 1680 and was succeeded by Dr John Heathfield. His wife Margaret then married Richard
Brereton (Merchant) in February 1681/2, who died in Madras in 1687.
Oct 3, 1767 Robert Sherman was appointed as a writer at the Coast and Bay at 10 l per annum by Sir Frederick, who appears to be the master of the company. On 28th March 1683, he was appointed Third at Balasor by Hedges (sic). He died in November 1684.
In November 28 1677, Edward Sherman is recorded as standing security for 500 l for Robert Sherman.
In February 28 1679, Christopher Sherman provides 500 l security for a John Penning.
In 1679, Samuel Sherman commanded a sloop called the Ganges, and was previously in the crew of the Company's ship Society. He was attacked by 20 Dutch seamen in the Hugli river. He married Jane Caldwall in June 1680 and died in 1685.
Other references are :
Soldier number 33 Richard Sherman, 1712 on the ship "Marlborough"
John Sherman 24 was a soldier on the Townsend in 1717
Anthony Sherman was a carpenter on the Chestergfield in 1755 as was William Sherman, a glass grinder.
In 1806 a David Sherman was a headmaster in Bengal.
I do not know the value of any of the above but hope it is interesting

Carolyn Sherman wrote, 18 October 2001
"The British East India Co., founded in 1603, was Britain's main trading organization with the Indies. By the time George went, the BEICO had at least three forts and 'factories' (depots for storage of goods) at Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras, which formed a 'tripod of power' for the British on the coasts of India on which they would build their empire in the 19th century. The company maintained its own army as well.
Since Bezaleel was a physician, he was probably in the privileged company of those who ran things, and may have made a great deal of money in the process. This may have enabled his family to return to England. Interesting that Bez himself only lasted 4 years there - conditions were horrendous and the little British graveyards are full of families who 'went out to India' and never returned... Madras as I remember it is a beautiful city - lots of India's movies are made there!" "

Sherman Cemetery - Barre Town, Vermont
Sherman Cemetery is located in Barre Town, Vermont, west of the end of Sherman Drive, a short dead-end road located near the intersection of Miller Road and VT route 63. The cemetery lies on private land now owned (?) by Edmond and Jane Benoit at 19 Sherman Dr. It is said that Col. Nathaniel Sherman built the old house in which they now reside.
The cemetery measures approximately 24 by 22 feet, and is bounded by a low granite wall on top
of which are granite posts and an iron fence in fair to poor condition. The cemetery is apparently not maintained on a regular basis. There is a single monument, inscribed on three sides, in the center of this cemetery. The monument was observed in Oct 1997 and was in good condition. Inscriptions are as follows:

NATHANIAL SHERMAN, the father of thirteen children, was a devoted Christian prominent in religion and business, a mason by trade, the builder of many public buildings in Montpelier, including the first granite State House, quarrying the granite from the Abbott Farm. He was elected Colonel of a local regiment in the early part of the present century, and was the first Captain of the old Artillery Company, about 1823. All of his children, at an early period, went to Chicago, and were active businessmen, among whom was his son Alson, who was Mayor of that City. Orren, William, Lucius, Rollin, one daughter, Harriet, who married Dr. Jana Bassett of Northfield, and a wealthy citizen of Chicago. Alson is yet living in Waukegan, Ill., and Orren and Rollin in Chicago.

==================================
information from newspaper clippings that were found in Stephen Pierce Family Bible recently [Sep 2003] purchased at an estate auction:
~~~~~~~~~
Olcott Sherman, Esq., died at his residence in Poultney Dec 25th 1880, at the age of 80 years. He was born June 17th, 1800 in Barre, Vt., and was a son of Jonathan Sherman, who was the first settler of Barre.
He early began life for himself following the occupation of brick-mason and sadler. He worked in Boston and various other places, and finally came to Poultney in company with Paul M Ross, in 1825, and the two in company set up harness making in East Poultney. Mr. Sherman moved to the West village in 1835, where he resided until his death, and almost to the day of death following his trade of mason.
He was an active, earnest, industrious man, achieving remarkable success in his calling, and left an excellent example of industry, frugality and attention to his business. He was frequently called to hold town offices and places of trust by his fellow citizens. At various times he held the offices of justice of the peace, selectman, constable, assessor and grand juror, and as in his own business, he always faithfully and promptly discharged the duties of the same.
On the 26th day of January 1830, he was united in marriage with Maria, daughter of the late Philo Hosford, with whom he has lived for more than half a century-she survives him. Three children were born to them, two of whom survive, Solon Sherman of Poultney and Mrs. Henry Clark of Rutland. Another, the wife of C F Petty of the American Express Co, Chicago died in 1871. He was an indulgent husband, a kind and loving father and a good citizen.
Mr. Sherman's death was very sudden. Only two weeks since we had occasion to note his remarkable activity for one his age. He was violently attacked on the morning of Christmas, and died at 8:30 in the evening. He was conscious of his condition, is mind remained clear and active until he quietly and peacefully passed away. The funeral was attended from his late residence on Monday the 27th, by a large gathering of friends and neighbors; the exercises were conducted by Rev. Dr. Starks. The burial was in the family lot in the new cemetery.
Sherman Cemetery - Barre Town, Vermont
Sherman Cemetery is located in Barre Town, Vermont, west of the end of Sherman Drive, a short dead-end road located near the intersection of Miller Road and VT route 63. The cemetery lies on private land now owned (?) by Edmond and Jane Benoit at 19 Sherman Dr. It is said that Col. Nathaniel Sherman built the old house in which they now reside.
The cemetery measures approximately 24 by 22 feet, and is bounded by a low granite wall on top
of which are granite posts and an iron fence in fair to poor condition. The cemetery is apparently not maintained on a regular basis. There is a single monument, inscribed on three sides, in the center of this cemetery. The monument was observed in Oct 1997 and was in good condition. Inscriptions are as follows:
