Martin married Josephine Tuthill , a native of Warrensville, Ohio. Her father died and her mother remarried and moved to Wisconsin to raise her children. Josephine was pregnant when her husband left for military service. She went to stay with her mother to have the baby who was my grandfather.
Martin had a gun accident as a youth that injured his trigger finger so he couldn't serve in the Iron Brigade with his brother, Levi but joined the Union Army in another capacity during the Civil War and on March 2, 1865, he joined Company H, 51st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry with the rank of Corporal and was sent with his regiment in pursuit of General Price's Confederate army through Missouri and Kansas. His regiment intersepted the Rebel forces at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He served until the close of the war and was mustered out with an honorable discharge ant Madison, Wisconsin. He returned to Dodge County and farmed for ten years, then bought land in Plum Creek Township, Burt, Kossuth County, Iowa.
Older brothers, Peter and John, who were grown when their parents moved to Wisconsin, moved to Missouri to homestead and since they were in a State that was sympathetic to the Confederate cause, Peter went back to Lowell, WI and joined the Union Army there. Peter was killed in the Battle of Champion Hills, Vicksburg, MS. John served in the Confederate Army.
Harold Grover remembers that he asked his grandpa once what he would do if he met his brother in battle and Martin said "I'd shoot him just like any other confederate soldier."
Farm purchased from D.P. Mayer on 10 July, 1882, filed Nov. 14, 1882, Warrenty Book 13, pag e 513, the NE 1/4 of SE 1/4 of Sec. 4, Twp. 96, Range 28, near Burt, Kossuth Co., Iowa. Martin had paid $12. per acre for the original 120 acres he purchased while on a trip to Iowa prior to 1874.
He brought his family by covered wagon with two teams of horses, two colts, a dog and cat in 14 days from Lowell, Wisconsin. The rest of their possessions were sent by train to Algona , the county seat of Kossuth county. Each morning of their journey, they thrilled to the sight of a brilliant comet between 4:30 and 5:30 a.m. daily. There was a small house on the land and later, they enlarged it into a fine home.
Martin was a stockholder in the Farmer's Elevator Company and the Burt National Bank.
Martin was a fine farmer and had a good sense of humor and many friends. In 1901, they retired to their newly-purchased home in Burt, the first house south of the Presbyterian Church . Martin played the fife in a lively manner.
Martin was tall, slim, curly hair and a moustache.
Buried: September 5, 1917 in the Burt, Iowa cemetary.
Cause of Death: Prostititis and Cystitis. Dr. W. T. Peters attending Physician.

Comrade Owen Died at Home in Burt
The people of Burt were shocked a week ago Tuesday to learn that Comrade Martin A. Owen had passed away during the previous night of Bright's Disease. It was known that Mr. Owen was failing and by some few that he was confined to his bed but none that the end was so near.
Obituary
Martin A. Owen was born in Oswego Co., New York, February 2, 1839 and later moved with his parents onto a farm in Dodge county, Wisconsin. On this farm his childhood and young manhood were spent. He was united in marriage February 17, 1861 to Miss Josephine Tuthill also of Dodge County. Shortly after his marriage, the Civil War broke out and Mr. Owen enlisted in Company II, 51st Volunteer Infantry in which he served his country faithfully until the end of the war. For a number of years thereafter, Mr. And Mrs. Owen farmed in their native county. In 1882 they came to Plum Creek township, Kossuth County, Iowa, where they bought land and entered the great field of agriculture again. In 1892 they gave up farming and moved to Burt. To them were born two children, Lewis M. and Mrs. Nettie V. Grover, both of Burt. Besides his wife and children, Mr. Owen leaves a brother, Lewis* Owen and a sister, Mrs. Adelina* Bunker, both of Redwood Falls, Minnesota and four grand children to mourn his passing. All were present at the funeral except the brother as also his niece, Mrs. C. W. Morgan of Danvenport. Two traits in the deceased's character marked him as good hearted, his passionate love of flowers and plants which he was ever cultivating and giving away and his love of music as evidenced by his enjoyment of the fife. The funeral services were held Wednesday from the house. Rev. A. J. Tritt having charge of the services and the remains were laid at rest in the Burt cemetery. The sorrowing relatives have the sympathy of all in their trouble.
*It appears that there is a mistake in the obituary since the brother who survived him was named Levi while his son was named Lewie and the sister was Angelina Merilla Owen who was married to Hiram Bunker.
General Notes: Wife - Josephine Tuthill
Josephine, daughter of Nathan and Albina Jane Snow Tuthill and her siblings had no middle names for their father didn't believe in them. She was born on their farm near Warrensvillle, Cuyahoga, Ohio. The farm later became part of the city of Cleveland. She was 15 years old when she married Martin Owen.
Josephine was a short, stocky, fun-loving and sweet lady. Josephine Smith, granddaughter of Nettie V. Owen was named after her.
General Notes: Child - Lewie Martin John Owen

Occupation: He bought a 160 acre farm in Portland Township, Burt, Kossuth, IA. In 1901, he moved into Burt and built a residence that he entirely remodeled. He engaged extensively in Real Estate. Later he was the owner of one of the largest garages in Burt. He also was a horse dealer. He was a Railroad Engineer. He also was a horse dealer. then one of the first Automobile Dealers in Iowa. Was in Who's Who in Iowa in 1905 and other years. Book with Barbara Kersbergen. A wonderful cartoon of which I have a copy was painted by Ding Darling, a famous Political Cartoonist of the Des Moines Register and Tribune.
He served the Republican for years in various offices and has served as a delegate to the county and state conventions. He was Kossuth County Grade and Road Master for a number of terms and did much to improve the public highway of that section of the state. He was a member of trhe town board and served for fifteen years as a member of the school board. He was one of the promoters of the new public-school building which was competed in Burt in 1911.
Religion: Methodist
Buried:June 8, l948 at Burt Township Cemetery, Burt, IA.
Marriage Certificate: License # 4,287, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.
In a letter written to me by my mother's cousin, Zada Grover Smith she states her Uncle Lew and Aunt Delia were married in Des Moines which she thought very strange since Delia was the only girl in a family with 3 sons. She lived in the township of Portland adjacent to the town of Burt while Lew lived in Plum Creek Township, nearby. Perhaps her parents did not approve the marriage since she was only 19 while Lewie was 27. Lewie's parents accompanied them to Des Moines and were witnesses for the wedding which was performed by Rev. H. L. Stetson on September 1, 1891. On the marriage license it shows Lewie M. Owen and Annie F. Mann, a 1st marriage for each of them. It shows her parents as S.V.R. Mann and Martha Huff.
During World War II, there was a famous book called "30 Seconds over Tokyo" from which a movie was made. The author, Ted Lawson, was on the bombing run. He was married to the daughter of Abbey Peavoy Reynolds, and grandaughter of Harris and Margaret Peavoy. Harris and his sister Mayme and brother Bernie were Lew's cousins.
Lewie was born at the home of his Aunt Harriett Tuthill Hilliker in Reeseville, WI. since his father was in the Army at the time.
General Notes: Child - Nettie Vivian Owen
Aunt Nettie used to tell of seeing a brilliant comet in the early morning sky that would awaken them as they traveled for two weeks in the covered wagon from Wisconsin to Iowa. She also told of Aunt Eunice who smoked a corn cob pipe and also Aunt Angeline and Uncle Levi who would come to visit them in Iowa from Wisconsin.
Buried: July 15, 1957 at Burt Cemetery, Burt, Kossuth, IA.
This receipe has been served at all of the major functions in the Tuthill, Owen family for generations.

The Richardson Memorial by John Adams Vinton, 1876 printed by Brown
Thurston& Co., Portland, Maine (1876), pg. 694-695:
EDWARD RICHARDSON, eldest son of Gen. Alford and Susan (Barneville)
Richardson; born in Yarmouth, Me., March 4, 1809; married, in Portland,
Nov. 12, 1832, Mercy Owen, dau. of John and Mercy Owen, who was born
there, Feb. 25, 1810.
After leaving school, he served a part of histime in a store and part
with his father, who was chashier of the Bank of Portland. He was but
twenty-two years of age when he was himself elected cashier of the
Commercial Bank, of Bangor, on its opening for businessin July, 1831.
At the age of twenty-six, October, 1835, he was elected cashier of the
Bank ofPortland, made vacant on account of the failing health of his
father, and removed to that city. There he reMained till 1842, when he
came to Cambridge, and went into business with his brother-in-law, John
Owen, publisher and bookseller to the university. In 1847, he became
private secretary to Hon. Samuel Adkins Eliot, who was then treasurer of
the colelge. In1853, Mr. Eliot, resignedthat position, and Mr.
Richardson was elected cashier of the City Bank, then recently chartered
at Cambridgeport. Of this institution he continued to be cashier till
the day of his death.
While his father was an earnest, stiff, close-communion Baptist, and
deacon of a Baptist Church, he himself was a zealous Unitarian; but the
mutual love of father and son suffered no interruption. The father, for
many of the last years of his life, was a paralytic, yet preserving his
mental powers to the end; honored, loved, and cared for by his son, under
whose roof he spent his latter days, while the father manifested
unbounded satisfaction in the dutiful behavior of his offspring.
In all the relations of life in which he was placed he was found
faithful and wise, and his memory will long be cherished by survivors.
Hisdeath, which was somewhat sudden, was accounted a public loss. Only
a ferw weeks was he confined to his house, and a few knew of his illness
till they were informed of his death. He died in Cambridge, Feb. 20,
1876, at the age of 67. His widow survives him.

The full name of the parish where John Owen was born was Llanfair Mathafarn in Wales.
Torrey and Colket state that John OWEN was in Windsor before 3 Oct 1650, the date he m. Rebecca WADE. Colket refs: "Desc. of John Owen" (1941) NEHGR 83:39 (desc.)
Few passenger lists remain for that period - and the only way we can often know the APPROXIMATE time of immigration is the first remaining public record of a person in New England. As John arrived a single man, he would not likely have owned property before marriage, and probably worked for another
family and lived with another family.
---Sandy. [Staff Specialist for Colonial New England Research and NSDAR Information]
Whilst at the National Library last Friday I enquired about Mathafarn, and have now identified it. The full name is Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf. This, together with the fact that it is on the Isle of Anglesey, with which I am not very familiar, probably explains why I did not identify it earlier.
It survives as the name of a parish, but I can find no township or even hamlet of the name on my 1.6 mile to the inch motoring atlas. I will try and look at an Ordnance Survey map at a larger scale sometime.
I do know where the parish is tho'. Anglesey is roughly a diamond shape, but wider E-W than N-S. Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf is about in the middle of the NE coast. This would tie in if John Owen were a cabin boy.
This could be where my help to you stops tho'. Unfortunately the survival rate for Welsh parish records is quite poor compared with English (and US!) ones. The earliest surviving parish register from Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf is that for 1753. Bishop's transcripts, the copies of the registers sent annually to the Bishop of the diocese are of little more help. They exist for 1678, 1684, 1686 1690 ........
When I have the opportunity I will see whether I can find anything more about him. NB Regular passenger and crew lists did not start until the 19th. century.

East Millinocket – Pauline Birt died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at her home in East Millinocket with her family by her side after a four year battle with cancer. She was born March 14, 1930 to Joseph and Antoinette (Pelkey) Owens. Pauline graduated from Schenck High School in 1948, and later that summer, on August 14, 1948, married Daniel Birt. Together they spent 63 happy years, and were blessed with three children – Jonathan Birt and his wife Paula, and Clifford Birt, all of East Millinocket, and a daughter, Valerie Barnes and her husband Slugger of Millinocket. Pauline is also survived by five grandchildren, Ralph Birt and Nicole York of East Millinocket, Douglas Birt of Millinocket, Todd Lufkin of Bradford and Stacy Cochran of Bangor; seven great grandchildren, Brittany and Jessica Tinkham of Medway, Hayden and Henry Lufkin of Bradford, Courtney Birt of East Millinocket, Madison Birt of Medway, and Camden York of East Millinocket. Polly is also survived by two brothers, Arthur Owens and Lowanda, and Richard Owens and his wife Peggy, all of Florida; and a sister, Mary Lou Otis and her husband Reginald of Blaine, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Rand Owens. Pauline worked as a CNA at Katahdin Nursing Home for 29 years and retired at the age of 75. It can still be heard there if someone does something wrong, "if Polly Birt was here you wouldn't do that." Polly was a friend to all and enjoyed life to the fullest. To her Sunday School class she was Aunt Polly. To her family she was Gram. We always said that if she could make it to Bingo, then she was alright. She will be missed by all, especially her friends at bingo and at the nursing home. Private committal services will be held at a later date for the immediate family. The family requests no flowers. Gifts in memory of Polly may be sent to Community Health and Counseling Services, 313 Enfield Road, Lincoln, ME 04457.
