AKA: Richard Pattee Born: - Virginia Baptized: Died: - Haverhill, Essex, MA Buried:
General Notes: Husband - Peter Pattee
The Pattee family was of Flemish origin, and the first reference to their life in England is to be found in the Walloon Registers of Canterbury Cathederal on 13 May 1586. Sometime thereafter the family removed to London where they were among the founders of the French Church on Threadneedle Street. This church building has long since been destroyed, but the Church Records are preserved in the files of the Huguenot Society of London. Peter was baptisted in the French Church on Threadneedle St.
In 1669, "on account of certain political opinions he entertained, he found it expedient to take a hasty departure from England." Peter settled first in Virginia where he had one son. He moved to Haverhill in 1676. He took the oath of Allegiance 28 November 1677 and established the first ferry at Haverhill. He applied for acceptance as "townman" of Haverhill in 1677 and was refused. (He was too different in temperment for the Puritans. His faith and standards were different also.)
He was a soldier in King Philip's War. He applied for a grant of a piece of land to settle on and again was refused (yet he lived his life out in Haverhill). They found out he left a wife and son in Virginia and he was ordered to send for them, and pay the cost to Andrew Greeley and a Mr. Aires, which he did, but they were not found by the messenger that sailed on that finding mission.
He was wounded in the war and was granted permission to stay in Haverhill "since he hadn't offended anyone".
In 1686 he was accused of "trespassing on town ways and common lands" by fencing some of them. In 1694 he was elected Haverhill's constable by majority vote. In 1681/82 he purchased land from John and Cornelius Page. In 1695 he applied for permission to build a grist mill and was refused. In 1696 he applied for permission to operate a tavern in his house, probably to purposely infuriate the townsmen for refusing the grist mill and made it worse by being so cocky as to store up vast amounts of "cyder, rum, molasses and what not". In 1710 he was again elected constable of Haverhill. "He was a "long and stormy petrel" in the town and only gradually fought his way to public favor. He was probably a man of considerable native ability and originality, but with a somewhat unconventional and undiplomatic temperment for the 17th century Haverhill.
Peter was a cordwainer (shoemaker) and ferry operator.
He was born prior to 1646 in either Canterbury or London, England.
It is believed that Peter emigrated from England to Virginia in 1669, although his name is not found on any published passenger lists.
About 1675 he migrated northward from an unnamed Virginia town to Bay Colony (Haverhill, MA) leaving a wife and child in Virginia.
He was residing at Salem when he was inpresed into the Bay Colony militia, participating in a bloddy battle against the Eastern Indians at Blackpoint (Scarborough), Maine 29 June 1677. The wounded Pattee was mistakenly reported as dead in a report of casualties.
Two years later he was again "pressed for the country's service" but no details are known.
He was one of earliest cordwainers in a town that later billed itself as the "Queen Shoe City of the World".
He also operated a ferry across the Merrimack. The fare was a penny for a man or woman and five pence for a horse.

Asa is listed amongst the crew of the Dalton, a merchantman from Newburyport captured in 1777 by the British ship Blenheim. He was transported to the Mill Prision in Plymouth. He made at least one escape attempt but was caught and returned to the prison.

He moved to New Gloucester, ME in late 1777. While the family lived in New Gloucester, he bought land near Danville Jct (Moses Little's Gore) and began clearing a farm and building a home. After about two years he returned to Gloucester,MA, but moved into his new home on the Pejepscot Claim likely in 1782. He was one of the earliest settlers in Danville, ME.
Towns from which the Early Settlers of Pejepscot Claim & Moses Little's Gore Came: Ebenezer Witham, from New Gloucester, ME 1782.
For its excellent series of records, Danville has been indebted to several painstacking clerks, but none of them for a longer period than to Ebenezer Witham. His father, a native of Gloucester, Mass., was one of the first to settle in the northwestern part of town, moving there soon after 1780. His mother was Sarah Hool. They had eight children, of whom four married and had children. Two of the sons, John and Ebenezer, were on the board of selectman over a quarter of a century.

Maine and Massachusetts Families in the Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis
Walter Goodwin Davis, Maine and Massachusetts Families in the Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis
(Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1996) Family Tree Maker CD #194
Three volume set: I. Allanson to French, II. Gardner to Moses, and III. Neal to Wright.
The multi-ancestor compendia compiled and published by Walter Goodwin Davis is one of the major achievements of twentieth-century genealogy. These volumes authoritatively cover 180 families, all of Davis's colonial forebears plus nineteen English families in the immediate ancestry of American immigrants.
The Davis opus is undoubtedly the premier work for northern New England, and an often essential companion volume to the celebrated Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, which it considerably expands, especially for many Essex County families with ties further north. Almost anyone with considerable New England ancestry--and as many as 100 million living Americans, about 40 percent of the population, have some colonial New England forebears--will descend from one or more, often a dozen or more, of the families herein, Vol. 3, pp. 119-122.
