Interview -- Ed Witham
Mr. Witham was interviewed at his farm about two miles northwest of Corvallis, where he is living on a part of his father's original claim. Mr. Witham's life has apparently been given to hard work rather than to study, and he was not able to give much information. His story follows:
"My father was Alfred Witham and my mother was Drucilla Allen. So far as I know she was not related to the Allens now living in Benton County. My parents crossed the plains by oxen team from Indiana in 1846. They were not attacked by Indians, but a group of Indians followed them for two or three days and finally succeeded in running off the only two horses they had. Two of the men pursued the thieves, wounded one of them, and recovered the horses. Father buried one child on the plains."
"The train was divided one time by a herd ofstampeding buffalo. Father said there must have been at least a thousand of them. Their coming was indicated by the cloud of dust while they were miles away, and their course was evident in time to divide the train and let them pass. Several of the animals were killed for meat."
"Father came in the same train with S.K. Brown and he used to tell this stort. S.K. Brown's wife (his second) became dissatisfied soon after starting andwanted to return. Her husband explained that it would not be safe for one wagon to return alone as they would be certain to fall pray to the Indians. The woman kept nagging him until he promised to spank her is she dis not stop. This did not impress her, and one day at the noon halt, when she had been particularly abusive before the whole party, Brown turned her over his knee and spanked her vigorously. She Screamed and kicked and called for help but no one interfered. When he put the woman down she rushed to the wagon, scrambled in, and did not show her face for a week."
"Father had thirteen children. Those who lived beyond childhood were Oliver, Charles, Alvin, Henry, myself,Fannie (Mrs. Baker), Mary (Mrs. Collins), and Ollie (Mrs. Cooper). I was born in 1862."
"Father had one thousand acres here. He took the hill land instead of the level valley because he wanted to raise stock. The hills furnished better grazing. He has often told me that in those days the hills were a covered with fine grass. May times the grass would grow shoulder high to a man. He estimated that he used to see as many as a hundred deer on the place at one time. Cougars did not often come this far from the mountains to bother them. Guns were scarce among settlers. Father did not have a gun to shoot game."
"I went to school at the old Mulkey Schoolhouse on Oak Creek. That was about two miles west of here. I remember Fannie Skeels (?) and Ellen Offlin (?) taught here. Then I attended private schools inCorvallis. Mr. Royal and Mr. Babcock taught these. We used to attend church at Philomath when it was not too muddy. We didn't bother about roads but drove across country in a direct line."
"Father used to say he had a thousand dollars invested in Philomath College. Preacher Allen came to him and wanted him to subscribe a thousand to the school. He replied that he had only a thousand and that he needed that. Said Allen, "Lend me the thousand, and when I sell my farm in three weeks I will repay it." Father trusted him, and let him have the money. When the farm was sold three weeks later it was by the sheriff, and the claims of creditors took the proceeds. Father never got his money back. Father served several terms in the State Legislature."
"I married Mary Ellen Ledbetter, and we have lived on her. This is part of my father's donation land claim. We have no children."

From William Cutler's "History of the State of Kansas," for Marion County, the following profile is included:
PROF. L. M. KNOWLES, Principal of the Peabody Public School, was born near Augusta, Me., August 8, 1841. He left Maine at an early age and went with his parents to Winnebago County, Ill., among the first settlers of that State, where he resided fifteen years. He then went with his father's family to Green County, Wis., and remained there with the exception of fours years' service in the late civil war, till July 14, 1868, when he married Miss Electa Allen, and made a new home in Kansas, where he engaged in teaching, first in Bourbon County, at Mapleton, next at Independence, where he was employed as teacher and Superintendent ten years. He took charge of the Peabody schools in 1880 and to his untiring effort is due the present high standing of the schools, a certificate of graduation from them admitting the applicant to the freshman year of the State University.

General Notes: Husband - Jonathan Pasco
When Jonathan Pasco was born on September 29, 1760 in East Windsor,GeorgeII
sat on the the throne of England, and the thirteen
original colonies--still under British control--were sixteen years from
their independence. George Washington was 28 years old, and Abraham
Lincoln would not be born for fifty years. America was a new and
developing country and Jonathan Pasco would be a part of that
development. In 1776 Jonathan Pasco enlisted in Colonel John
Patterson'sMassachusetts regiment. He fought with that regiment in the
battle of Trenton. The battle of Trenton, known as the Christmas
campaign, was an important American victory because it renewed the spirit
of the patriot forces and seriously disarranged the plans of the British.
The battle was fought in the early morning of December 25, after
the commander-in-chief of all the Continental forces, George
Washington, crossed the Delaware River. They marched to the enemy's camp
at Trenton and took the Hessians, by surprise. Nearly one thousand
British prisoners were captured. Legend contends that sometime during
the Revolutionary War, Pasco and several other soldiers were captured by
Indians. An unsuccessful escape attempt was made resulting in their
recapture. As an example, one ofthe group was singled out, tortured and
skinned alive. In order to establish his parole not to
escape, Pasco was given a pocketbook made of the torture victim's
skin and was forced to take an Indian women for a wife. Pasco eventually
did escape and returned toEast Windsor. He named his second daughter
Cleons, after his Indianwife. The pocketbook has been handed down
through the generations. After returning from the Revolutionary War,
Captain Pasco constructed his home at 31 South Main Street in East
Windsor. He married a local woman, Elizabeth Allen, and fathered eleven
children while residing there. At the age of eighty-four, Jonathan
Pasco died. (August 21, 1844) He is buried in East Windsor in the Town
Street Cemetery (historical name forSouth Main Street), only a mile
south of the Pasco House. He also has a headstone in the Scantic
Cemetery that commemorates his revolutionaryWar service. Events and
happenings occurred, history was made and changed, and Jonathan Pasco's
house continues at 31 South Main Street moving through the
centuries. A collection of Pasco memorabilia is
included in the decor of the restaurant, creating an interesting tribute
to Jonathan Pasco. Pasco's decedents are scattered, but a few still
remain in the East Windsor area. All have been helpful in creating the
atmosphere of the restaurant and the accuracy of the history
presented.
The Jonathan Pasco House was built by its namesake in 1782 and completedfor
occupancy by his family in 1784. The original brick structure has been
completely restored to serve as a restaurant dedicated to providing fine
dining for dinner without altering the historical significance
and traditional flavor of the Jonathan Pasco House. Jonathan Pasco's
Restaurant, 31 South Main Street, East Windsor CT

General Notes: Husband - Samuel Stone
- He came to America in 1633 to accompany John Cotton and Thomas Hooker, two authoritative religious leaders of the first generation. It was said of them that Massachusetts now had "Cotton for their clothing, Hooker for their fishing, and Stone for their building."
- He was called as a pastor and teacher of Newton.
- He went with Thomas Hooker in 1636 to form a new settlement on the Conn. River. The settlement was Hartford. Thomas Lord and Richard Lord were also in the group.
General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Allen
Note: 1(*)On Boston 1st Church Records, p. 25, date of July 1641. "Letters of commendation were granted to John Winthrop the younger, going to England, the like for our bro. Mr William Hibbins also going to England. "Mrs Elizabeth Stone, lately called Mrs Eliza Allen, but now the wife of Mr Samuel Stone the teacher of the church of Hartford, in Conn., was granted letters of recommendation thither." Turning back to 24 March, 1638-9, I find the admissions were Mrs Elizabeth Allen, Mrs Penelope Pelham and Elizabeth Story. Whether Elizabeth Allen were maiden or widow is not known to me, but my opinion is that not being called wife of any or widow, she was a young woman, for she lived to 1681. [Ju dge Savage.]
Note: Elizabeth drew up her will on 16 June 1681/2 which was proven on 2 March 1681/2 and signed as Elizabeth Gardner. She appointed her daughter Elizabeth Rogers and grandson Samuel Sedgwick joint executors. In August 1663, the Widow of Samuel Stone and his son received a land grant for his service during the Pequot war. "In exchange for a farm which had been granted to Mr. Stone for his good service to the country in the Pequot War and afterwards." They were given five hundred acres of upland, and fifty acres or so of meadowland.
