Adam Cushing Hon. Major (1693 - 1752) graduated from Harvard College in 1714.
The captain was a farmer by occupation and represented the town in the General Court. At the college Adam was constantly busy with small offenses, culminating in senior year when he and his classmate Coffin (q.v.) were degraded for "Scandalous Excesses in their Chambers on the Lord's Day night."In spite of this he took both degrees in course, for the second arguing that the sun is fire. Beginning in 1717, Cushing kept the Hingham school for three years. On September 25, 1718, he married Hannah, daughter of Thomas Greenwood (A.B. 1695) of Rehoboth. He was chosen a selectman of Hingham in 1720 but five years later was a candidate for the Portsmouth pulpit. About 1726 he removed to Weymouth, where he bought a large estate and at once became a leading citizen. He held most of the town offices and went before the General Court to petition for the incorporation of a new county to be composed of towns surrounding Weymouth. In 1735 he as elected to the House of Representatives, where he was one of the 'monitors' whose duty it was to see that the orders of the House were put into execution. The greater part of his legislative services were in connection with land grants to veterans and their descendants. He was himself a leading proprietor of New Hingham (now Chesterfield) and frequently called the meetings of the proprietors at his house in Weymouth.
Cushing was a captain of militia as early as 1735. His only active military service came six years later when a group of Spanish prisoners escaped from confinement in Boston and created a panic among the villages around the Bay. The Governor and Council ordered Captain Cushing out to search for the Spaniards "in Boston Bay, and in the creeks near Hingham and Weymouth." The Captain had become a Major by 1743, probably in connection with an independent company formed in Weymouth for service at Castle William.
In 1746, the Major was appointed a Justice of the Peace, and therefore he paid little attention to the General Court, giving up his seat in 1749. His one great public service had no connection with these offices. It happened that the alewives, or herring, did not run up Back River, so that the people of Weymouth were without what was to the inhabitants of other towns an important source of food. It occurred to Cushing to transport spawning herring from Taunton River to Great Pond, whence the fry went down Back River to the sea. They returned the next year and every year thereafter.
Major Cushing died of the throat distemper on January 21, 1752, leaving an estate that inventoried only 615 pounds, although it included two slaves. In his will he provided that the children must each deliver to their mother annually, "two cords of Merchantable Wood, two bushells of good Indian Corn, one bushell of good rye and one barrell of cyder." In 1720 he was one of the Selectman of Hingham. In 1726 he bought an estate at the corner of Commercial and Essex Street, Weymouth, Massachusetts. He held a Captian's commission in the militia.
Almost immediately upon his settlement in Weymouth, from his force of character, education and reputation, he sprang into prominence and became the leading spirit in all town and parish affairs. He was almost continuously the Deputy to the General Court from 1735 to 1748, and held as regularly the most important town offices. Among his other offices he was one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace.
On the night of September 30, 1741, a number of the Spanish prisoners escaped from Boston with a large sail-boat. As they were armed, great fear was felt for the safety of the New England coasting vessels, and Capt. Adam Cushing, formerly one of Hingham's Selectmen, and now an able officer, was ordered in pursuit, with special instructions to search the creeks of Hingham and Weymouth. There remains no account of his success or otherwise.
Adam's will, made at Weymouth Massachusetts, was proved in 1752.

Frank Cushing, of Bangor, Meets Death at Sault St Marie, Ont on Tuesday:
A dispatch from F.H. Clergue, Esq to his father J.K. Clergue, Esq of this city announces the death of Mr Frank Cushing of this city at the mill at Sault Ste Marie, Ont where he was employed. The dispatch states that he was instantly killed on Tuesday by a shaft in the mill and Mr J.K. Clergue was requested to inform the children here of the sad event.
Mr Cushing had been connected with the building of of the big mills out there and Mr Clergue regarded him as a valued employee.
He was well known in this section having been connected with many building operations and having worked in various mills. His age was 51 years. The remains will arrive in Bangor this noon and the funeral will be held on Saturday at 9 o'clock from 227 Pine street, at St John's Catholic church. His son Frank will accompany the remains here.
Mr Cushing's wife died some years ago and he is survived by six children: Miss Annie A. and Miss Josie of this city; Frank and Henry who are employed in the mill at Sault Ste Marie; Misses Ora and Marie who are in Oldtown. Mr Cushing was held in high regard by all who knew him and his death will be regretted. - Bangor Daily Whig and Courier, Friday June 10, 1898.

A lot of land was granted to him by the Town of Hingham in 1665. Hebecame a freeman in 1671, was an active magistrate and for many yearsTown Clerk of Hingham. From 1682, and for many years he kept a countrystore. Selectman in 1665 and for many years after. Also in the years1680, 1682, and 1695 he was a delegate to the General Court.[2]
"To Daniel Cushing, that town [Hingham] is indebted for the firstaccurate records of the proceedings of the town. His clerkship commencedin 1669, and the method and neatness of the records for many years, doeshim much credit."

Jeremiah preached at Haverhill, then ordained at Scituate 27 May 1691.H.C. 1676.
Jeremiah "received his degree at Harvard College in 1676. He was educatedfor the ministry under the direction of Mr. Norton of Hingham. He was notimmediately in the ministry. He received an invitation to become thepastor of Haverhill in 1682, which he declined. He began to preach inScituate in February 1691, and was ordained there on the 27th of May the
same year. His salary was £60. Besides this, the Conihassett partnersmade him a gift of twenty acres of land. It was laid out in 1694,adjoining the lands of John Curtis and Henry Merritt. He purchased JohnCurtis's house in 1698, and probably resided in it, and rented theparsonage. It stood between Timothy White's and the harbour.
"The term of Mr Cushing's ministry was short, he having deceased March22, 1705, in the fifty-first year of his age and the fourteenth of hisministry. There is a monument ot his memory in the old burying groundnear the harbour. He suffered a lingering illness, having been obliged tosuspend his labours for several months."
Jeremiah was also a minister at Provincetown, for several years before1700, but probably only preached to the transient population in thefishing season.

In 1679 Peter's father Daniel, built for Peter the house near theCohasset line, in that part of Hingham known as Rocky Nook, which hasbeen occupied by five generations of Peter's descendants. When the housewas built there was no road going by it, the only way leading to it wasTurkey Hill Lane, a path leading from the "Plain" to Cohasset.[1]
Peter and Hannah "resided on East St., Hingham. He was constable 1688,and selectman 1689 and 1702. There is an old house on East St., still[1905] owned by the descendants of Peter Cushing which was built in 1670;it is shaded by a fine old elm tree, transplanted in 1729. This part ofEast St. is often called 'Rocky Nook.'"

General Notes: Child - Joseph Cushing
Joseph Cushing (1781 - 1852) was a printer in Boston and succeeded William Biglow, M.A., in editing (The Village Messenger), of Amherst, New Hampshire, about 1796-1800. This publication continued to Dec., 1801, and was succeeded in 1803 by (The Farmers Cabinet) (Coll. Mass. Hist Soc., Vol II). He established this newspaper. After losing everything in a bank scandal (not his fault), he removed to Baltimore in 1809, where he established himself as a bookseller. He there served in the Legislature and City Government as Mayor, and aided in the establishment of the first Public School in that city - as also in 1816 of the Savings Bank of Baltimore, of which he was President for 25 years until his death.

David Cushing Jr , Lieutenant (1754 - 1827) was also called Captain and was an inn-holder, tanner and farmer. He was Constable in Hingham 1784 to 1787 inclusive, and from 1790 to 1794 inclusive. He moved to Ashburnham, Massachusetts in 1798. He served in the Revolutionary War as 4th Lieutenant in Captain Jotham Loring's (Hingham) Co., in 1775; also as a Sergeant in Captain Pyam Cushing's Co., Colonel Solomon Lovel's Regt., in 1776.

Jonathan Cushing Hon. (1759 - 1847) resided on Main Street, South Hingham. He was a farmer, Selectman 1804, and Representative 1808 to 1813 inclusive.
Military: Revolutionary War. He enlisted as a seaman in 1777. Joseph Lincoln and Jonathan Cushing were captured while serving on board the "Hazard". He was imprisoned at Halifax, 1778, and on the (Jersey) prison ship 1780. In 1779 Asabel Stodder was in service on the "Hazard."
Cushing, Jonathan, Hingham. Seaman, brigantine Hazard, commanded by Capt. Simeon Samson; engaged Oct. 17, 1777; discharged May 20, 1778; service, 7 mos. 3 days; roll dated Boston; also, same vessel and commander; said Cushing taken prisoner May 1, 1778; arrived home Oct. 12, 1778; wages allowed on previous roll to May 20, 1778; wages due for 4 months 22 days.

General Notes: Child - George Russell Cushing
George Russell Cushing Hon. Captain (1768 - 1851) removed to Ashburnham in 1800. In early life he was a seafaring man and commanded several vessels in the European and West Indian trade. At the time of the French Revolution he was obliged to remain in France on account of the embargo laid upon his vessel. He visited all the noted seaports of the world, and amassed something of a fortune. He had a miniature of himself painted in London, England, with the Cushing Coat of Arms upon its back, which is now in the possession of his immediate descendants. He was a Justice of the Peace of Ashburnham for a number of years.
George was the owner of ship "Phoenix" in 1789.
Military: George's appointment to the Captaincy in the 4th regiment of infantry, 2nd brigade, 7th division of militia took place in 1807. He was honorably discharged in 1811. Miss Dorothy P. Cushing of 44 W. Emerson Street, Melrose, Massachusetts. has his appointment and discharge papers.

First of all her christening name was Elenora, and her parents were listed as Frank Cushing and Mary Muty. For her siblings, Mary's name was listed variously as Marie Mutty (Thibadeau his wife), Mary Ann Muttie, and of course Mutty.
US Social Security has sent me a copy of her application for an account number dated April 30, 1937. She listed her father as Frank C. Cushing and her mother as Mary A. Cushing.
She was raised by Louis J. Mutty, who had no children. He was at King Tut's tomb at the opening.
In the 1920 Census she is listed as living in Fairfield Twp., Tippacanoe Co., Indiana with Clarence O. Flowers, Clare Flowers, and Ruth Flowers. The names, dates and birthplaces all match what I know from my family.
In the 1930 Census she is listed, with her family, as living on Wayne Ave. in Philadelphia PA. I grew up in that area and know it well. This listing includes Clarence O. Flowers, Leora C. Flowers, Clare C. Flowers, Ruth E. Flowers. Their ages and occupations are consistent with what I know and things that my mother told me about. Also, my father lived not far away.
I also have found some other information you may be interested in. I telephoned the Central Maine School of Nursing, Livingston ME, which mother told me was where Nana went to nursing school, and they have her listed as graduating in 1909.They also had a new name listed with her info. Directly below her graduation listing is "(Flower s)"-whom she married in 1910, Directly below that is listed "Buker."
I also have found an address for both her and a Miss Gertrude Mutty listed in the Lewis ton, Androscoggin County Maine Directory, 1908; it is "296 Main, rms.do. " Their occupation is listed as "nurse."
My grandmother's maiden name is Mutty. Her mother is Mary/Marie Mutty and her father is Frank Cushing according to baptism records from St. Joseph's Church in Bangor ME.

BUCKSPORT and LAKE WALES, Fla. - Phyllis E. Carrier, 76, died Aug. 28, 2007, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Feb. 2, 1931, in Brewer, the daughter of William and Elsie (Cushing) McAllian. Mrs. Carrier was an Avon representative for 20 years. She and her husband enjoyed winters at their home in Lake Wales, Fla., where she enjoyed playing shuffleboard, cards and bingo.
Summers were spent in Maine with her family including, Monday outings, dominos with her sisters, and playing bridge with her sisters-in-law. She also loved animals and was a big Red Sox fan.
Phyllis was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Bucksport. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Wallace R. Carrier of Bucksport; four children, Jenny Harman and her husband, Phil, of Bucksport, William Carrier and his wife, Kathy, of Orland, Michael Carrier and his wife, Charlotte, of Orland, and Julie Brown and her husband, Bill, of Stetson; six grandchildren, Heather Pruitt, B.J. Carrier, Billy Jo Beaulieu, Joey Beaulieu, Matthew Carrier, and Ryan Carrier; two great-grandchildren, Garrett Carrier and Scott Austin Jr.; eight siblings, Ruth Bowden of Bucksport, James McAllian of Bucksport, John McAllian of Orland, Wilfred "Freddy" McAllian of Verona Island, Dorothy Barnard of Bucksport, Arthur McAllian of Palmyra, Beatrice Silva of Bucksport, and Harold McAllian of Bucksport; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Martha Longfellow, May Rogers and Lillian Nickless; and one brother, Charles McAllian. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St.,Bucksport, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, with Father James Plourde officiating. Interment will be at St Vincent de Paul Cemetery, Bucksport. Donations in her memory may be made to Bangor Human Society, 693 B Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
