John, born in Dedham in 1613, was admitted a freeman in New England in 1637. He was also a selectman many times, a land surveyor, town clerk and representative in 1651, 53, 63. He was a captain in Ye Frayned Band in 1680 and steward of Harvard College in 1662. He had two wives. The first was Martha Porter, daughter of Robert and Grace Porter. He married her in 1637, the same year he was admitted a freeman. It appears they had a son John, because he was born in 1638, the year after their marriage. His second wife was Grace Palmer, widow of William Palmer. They married in Water town, and she died on Feb 7, 1700. The history of Harvard confirms these two wives. However, I have a list of his children altogether and can't tell which ones had which mother. At any rate, his son Joseph, born on

I can confirm the two wives, but it will take awhile to retrieve that information. I had a friend in Cambridge research this, actually, about 2-3 years ago because I was hoping my son might qualify for some distant legacy scholarship. She came to a dead end at a certain point, because the lines split and it wasn't possible to tell which children belonged to which wife--or something like that (my memory of this is rather foggy--that's why I hoped you might know). Unfortunately, I don't remember what sources she used, but I might be able to contact her to find out. As I recall, however, she did verify the names of the wives.May 14, 1650 is my direct ancestor.

From TTS-20:
"John Sherman, b. 2d. 9m. 1638, Freeman May 19, 1669. Soldier in King Phillip's War in Capt. Samuel Moseley's Company. He was wounded in the battle at Swamp Fort, King Philip's War, Dec. 19, 1675, and on Jan 6, 1676, is recorded as being in Rhode Island, wounded. He probably died from his wounds."

From Diana Gittins, Nov02:
"In a map of grants of land in Little Compton RI I saw land was allocated to John Sherman in 1673 - have you any idea which John that might be? Could it have been John, son of Capt John, presumed killed in King Philip's War?"

General Notes: Husband - Oscar John Palmer
Occupation: Farmer, faith healer
Note:
Oscar was the third of ten children, born in Fayette, Maine in 1846 to John and Cordelia (Morrison) Palmer. As a young man, he fought in the Civil War and scouted in Indian territory around Geuda Springs, KS for the infantry. Family history says he claimed more men were hurt in the Civil War by putting their feet out to stop what appeared to be slow-moving cannonballs than by any other way. As compensation for his service, Oscar was deeded six sections of land in Kansas. Because he was familiar with the area, he selected land around Geuda Springs. In 1868, he married Rhoda Anne Gilbert and three years later, had the first of eleven children. The threesome moved to Kansas in 1873 to homestead the deeded property.
Oscar worked the farm in Kansas and supplemented his income by driving an eight-mule team freight hauler between the Mississippi River and Colorado. When traveling south, he carried glass sandwiched between layers of hay and on the return trip north, carried eggs in the hay. He also sold the hay. At one time, the price of hay was so low, he decided to float it down the Mississippi on a barge, hoping to get a better price at New Orleans. However, a rumor got started that he had cholera aboard. By the time he got to New Orleans, all hands had juped ship, but Oscar safely delivered and sold his cargo.
Oscar also earned money during the building of the Southern Pacific Railroad by contracting with the Railroad to kill buffalo to feed the workers. Family history relates the story of a hunt en route from Kansas City to Denver in which a fellow worker shot a buffalo, but missed. As it ran by, Oscar grabbed its tail and hung on. After being dragged around a bit, he pulled a knife from his boot and cut the animal's hamstrings.
While Oscar's farm was a success, he got tired of sending his equipment back east to be repaired. So, he searched out the best blacksmith he could find and offered him five years room and board (with a promise of 80 adjoining acres) if he would come out to work for him. The smithy travelled to Kansas from Wisconsin. Although he did not take Oscar up on the 80-acre offer, he did stay and teach all Oscar's sons the trade.
Oscar became a faith healer after a revival, at which time his wife Rhoda took over responsibility for running the farm. He was summoned at all hours of the day and night to heal people of ailments common at that time (before the discovery of antibiotics). His grandson (who has the same name) recalls an incident in which a shop owner recounted the story of how Oscar had cured him of a toothache at a time when people often died of such infections (see Appendix B).
Oscar had a stroke and was bedridden for a long time. The couple bought a house in Arkansas City (711 North Fourth Street, which still stands and belongs to the family). Oscar's grandson Ernest Cooke remembers living in this house with Oscar and Rhoda for several months in 1911 when his mother was pregnant. He said his grandfather was ill with diabetes, but was never strict. Rather, he was always personable and smiled a lot.
Oscar died in 1916. Two of his children died in infancy and a third died at the age of thirteen. He was survived by three sons and five daughters. Oscar is buried at the Geuda Springs, KS Cemetery.
