AKA: James F. Dowing Born: January 17, 1827 - Near Hell Gate, NJ Baptized: Died: Buried:Spouse: Mary Ann Witham Marr: April 1868 - Warren Co., OH
General Notes: Child - James F. Downing
James F. Downing is one of the old and substantial farmers of Clinton Township, Boone County, Indiana. His father was James Downing, born in 1784, in Donegal County, Ireland. He was reared a Catholic, and owned a copy of the "Douay" Bible, published by authority of the Pope, from the "Douay" university, bears date of November 8, 1609, and is in good preservation, and highly prized by the family. He crossed the ocean in 1819, landing in New York. He was educated to the business of a gardener, and was a fine botanist as well. He married at Providence, Rhode Island, Avis Giddings, who was born in 1795 near Devires, England, and her religious teachings were those of a Presbyterian. She emigrated about two years later than her husband, landing at Providence, Rhode Island. They settled in Queens County, Long Island, at "Hell Gate," where he followed his gardening business, as well as fruit growing. Their children were all born in the State of New York, and were named as follows: John G., who served in the Civil War; Edward, who died at the close of the war; James F.; Elizabeth J.; and Mary M. Except Edward, all are living and married. Mr. Downing determined to try the west, so he started November 1833, with his family, having one horse and an ox team, and was eleven months on the way, landing here October 11, 1834. He entered 120 acres of land in what is now Clinton Township and accumulated eighty acres more. The Indians had just left for their reservation, and Mr. Downing and James tore down some of their huts that stood on the banks of Terrapin Creek. There was just one house between that stream and Brown's Wonder. He was politically a Democrat. His death occurred in February 1868 at the age of eighty-three while the death of his wife occurred in 1879, aged the same as her husband. Both were buried in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery, Boone County, Indiana.
James F. Downing was born January 17, 1827, on Long Island, eight miles from the City of New York. He was taught to work almost from the first, and as his father was a gardener, James made three trips a week with produce for the markets of New York City, sixteen miles constituting a round trip. After moving to this county with his parents, he picked and burned brush, and assisted in clearing what was then a wilderness. When the weather was inclement he attended the subscription school, which was held in the log schoolhouse. When he was of age he still lived with his parents, caring for them, as the other children left home to do for themselves; he sacrificed his feelings and prospects to do his duty to his parents. When James F. was forty-one years of age he married, April 28, 1868, Mary A. Witham of Warren County, Ohio, who was forty years old. This marriage has been blessed with two children: Lillie M., born May 9, 1870; Sylvester W. born September 10, 1871. He was a member of the Terrapin grange, No. 424, and he is also a stanch Republican. He owns 200 acres of land; seventy-five being in timber, but the rest is under a good state of cultivation. He has a fine residence, which cost over $2,000, a good barn, and all the buildings that denote a prosperous farmer. Years ago he drew wheat by wagon to Lafayette, some thirty-seven miles distant, and now he has a good gravel road and several good markets not far distant. His health is not good, for in his strong manhood he was a great worker, and helped to clear 100 acres of heavy timber.
The early life of Mr. and Mrs. Downing was spent in the log cabin, with puncheon floor, clapboard roof, and clay chimney. The family has a hammer that shows the many hard hits that it gave, as well as a workbasket that was brought with the family from New York State. Mrs. Downing has her grandfather's wedding stockings, made of silk, figured, and worn with knee britches. Also his father's cane of bamboo, that is very old. All these relics are highly prized and well cared for. Mary A. Witham was born December 28, 1827, in Warren County, Ohio, on a farm. She is a believer in the Universalist doctrine. She is a good and faithful helpmate and has done a mother's duty. Her Mother's name was Mercy Heaton, born in 1803, died in 1879. Her father was born in 1801 in Warren County, Ohio, married in 1823, died in 1864, and their children were Sarah; William H., who died August 1893; Mary A.; Rebecca; Robert M.; Sylvester, killed in the late war; Ennis; Martha E., who died at twelve years of age; and Flavius J., in the Civil War. Her parents are buried in the Mason Cemetery, Warren County, Ohio. Robert Witham, her grandfather, was born in Connecticut, was a farmer, and lived to be eighty-six years old; married Sarah Woodruff, who was born in Pennsylvania, was about thirty when she married and died aged seventy-seven. In Warren County her parents owned 330 acres of land. In his early manhood he took, a kettle, built a fire in a stump, cooked his own meals, and cleared his land. He was a great hunter and delighted to tell his children his hunting stories. Their children were William, Hannah R., Mary, Betsey, Rachael (died early), James Samuel; six lived to be married. On the maternal side the grandparents were Daniel Heaton, his wife being Annie Young, who was born in New Jersey, and lived to be seventy-seven. This union was blessed with Rebecca, Rachel, Abigail, Mercy, and William. She, being widowed, married Frederick Briney, and had three children, Daniel, Mary, and Frederick. She has the old note and hymnbook with the "buckwheat system," which is considered much of an heirloom.

GEORGE W. WITHAM
George W. Witham, who for many years was a representative of mercantile interests in Perry but is now living a retired life, found in an active business career that energy and determination constitute the basis of success rather than genius or any fortunate combination of circumstances. His life record began at Withamville, Ohio, February 7, 1834, his parents being Nathaniel and Jemima (Lane) Witham, who were married on the 22d of November, 1805. The father was born at Freiburg, Maine, in May, 1785, while the mother's birth occurred in North Carolina, December 12, 1789. They became the parents of twelve children, of whom George W. is the youngest, and eleven of the number reached years of maturity. The father removed to Ohio with his parents in 1800 and engaged in merchandising there and also owned two farms from which he derived a good income. He died July 25, 1847, at the age of sixty-two years, while his wife passed away on the 28th of January, 1842.
George W. Witham was fifteen years of age at the time of his father's demise. His youth was passed upon the home farm and he supplemented his early education by study in Clermont Academy in Ohio. He was married when twenty-one years of age and, having acquired a liberal education, he afterward devoted twelve or thirteen years to school-teaching, which he followed through the winter months, while in the summer seasons he gave his attention to farming. He was a capable educator and taught for nine years in one district, his services giving entire satisfaction throughout the community. In 1864, however, he sold his farm and entered the employ of A. S. Whittaker & Company at Bury, Illinois, with whom he remained for ten years. He then formed a partnership with D. S. Rickett and later bought his partner's interest. He was then alone in business until 1898, when he turned his store over to his son and daughter and is now living a retired life. He made a creditable record in business as a thoroughly reliable merchant who was honorable in his dealings and put forth every legitimate effort to increase his trade, thereby winning a gratifying measure of prosperity.
On the 28th of October, 1855, Mr. Witham was married to Miss Mary Ann Downer, of New Salem. Her parents, George W. and Sarah (Mills) Downer, were married December 16, 1838. Both were natives of Pennsylvania and the former died in 1857, while the latter passed away at the age of seventy-eight years. In their family were five children, all of whom have passed away with the exception of Mrs. Witham. Her father devoted his attention to general agricultural pursuits in Ohio until 1851, when he removed to Pike county, Illinois, settling in New Salem. He afterward purchased a farm in Fairmount township, but his death occurred in New Salem. Mrs. Witham was born February 19, 1841, and with her parents same to Illinois in a prairie schooner, being sixteen days upon the road. Mr. and Mrs. Witham have become the parents of seven children, of whom six are now living: Charles J., who was born January 11, 1857, died August 28, 1865. Collins M., born November 20, 1859, and now living at Perry, wedded Mary Lee and has three children. Effie E., born September 3, 1862, is the wife of William Hardy, of St. Louis, Missouri, and has one child. Ellen S., born September 16, 1864, married Russell Dunston, of Baylis, and they have two children. Sarah, born May 16, 1867, is the wife of James Akins. Joseph M., born June 22, 1871, married Alice Smith, who died after two years and he later wedded Mary E. Winterbotham. Harvey D., born February 1, 1874, married Myrtle Walker, who died leaving three children and later he wedded Minnie Randall.
Mr. Witham was appointed township treasurer and filled that position for more than thirty years, when he resigned. He was also township collector and treasurer for one term and in the discharge of his official duties was ever prompt and faithful, recognizing his obligations to citizenship. He belongs to Perry lodge, No. 95, A. F. & A. M., and to the Modern Woodmen camp of Pittsfield. His political allegiance has always been given to the republican party and he is ever fearless in defense of whatever he believes to be right.

General Notes: Husband - James F. Downing

The Bangor Daily Commercial of Monday, June 28 and Tuesday June 29, 1910 carried the story of the "Triple Tragedy in Springfield"' The June 28, 1910 story reads.
NO INQUEST IN TRIPLE TRAGEDY
Funeral of David Downs and His Victims Today at Springfield
Coroner Charles E. Rackliffe of Old Town returned Monday night from Springfield where he invesigated the triple tragedy of Sunday morning, when David Downs shot and instantly killed his mother-in-law, Mrs. Woodward, his wife and himself.
Mr. Rackliffe interviewed nearly everybody who knew anything about the case, and after collecting the facts, decided that no inquest was necessary. The funeral of the three will be held on Tueday...
Mr. Rackliffe found that the details of the shooting varied somewhat from the first story of the tragedy, gathered when the excitement was at fever heat and facts somewhat mixed.
The tragedy was the terreble breaking of a domestic storm which has been brewing for some time in the Downs and Woodward families. Wheather with cause or not, Mrs. Downs left her husband nearly five weeks ago. In her effects were found an unfinished letter to a well known lawyer which read: "My husband has kicked me out and taken my darling child from me. Haven't I had enough to_______." It is presumed that his was a letter in regard to a divorce. Downs had been living alone and the five year old daughter at his parents, in the neighborhood.
It was Sunday morning that David Downs apparently made his mind to bring affairs to an end. Taking his 30.30 rifle he went down the road to the Woodward house. Mrs. Woodward, his mothet-in-law. met him at the door with an axe in her hand. Downs told her that he wanted to see his wife. She threatened to use the axe on him if he tried to get in. Then Downs raised his rifle and fired, Mrs. Woodward falling dead, shot thought the head.
At that moment Mrs. Downs appeared behind her mother. shrieking, "I'll come back, dave---I'll come back!"
"It's too late now," said Downs as he jacked another cartridge and again ratsed his rifle fired with the same deliberation and deadly aim. Mrs. Downs had partly turned and the shot entered the side of her head, coming out the eye. She fell almost upon the body of her mother, killrd.
Downs, who had been stabding, perhaps, six feet in front of the door, then turned and re-loafded as he went stopped in the road as if looking for another mark for his rifle. In a moment he returned and entered the house, stepping over the bodies of the two women, placed the muzzle of his rifle in his mouth and fired, falling in aheap almost upon the bodies of his victims.
Meanwhile, Mr Woodward and Mrs. Woodward's son Leroy Jipson and wife Florance had fled by the back door, terror stricken, to a neighbor's.
... The action of Downs all though appears to have been calm and deliberate. His shooting was with the most deadly accuracy and all as if he had thought out a plan of action and carried it out.
...The stories of the neighbors differ as there appears to be some who "take sides"; Some say Downs and his wife, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Jipson. would have lived happily if they had been left alone; others say that Downs was cross and irritable and his wife was not to blame foe leaving him.
... The funeral for David Downs was held at the home of his father, Charles Downs, with Rev. Mr. Branch officiating and burial was in the Tucker Ridge Cemetery. The clegyman then went to the Woodward home and officiated at the funeral for Mrs. Woodward and Mrs. Downs. Their burial was in the North Cemetery, mother and daughter in one grave.
... This article contains pictures of David Downs, of Elizabeth (Jipson) Downs, of Mr. and Mrs. Ive Woodward, the mother-in-law and her husband and of the five year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Downs, Jessie. Folloeing the tradedy, Jessie was raised by her parternal grandfather, Charles Downs. (Mrs. Mildred Lane, daughter of Jessie, supplied these news articles and gave permission to print.)
...It is interesting that when the 1910 census was taken, the census taker visiting just days before the tragedy, the families were listed as following:
66-67 Woodward Ive, 56,married second 6 years, farmer
Abbie J., 57.wife, married second 6 years, 6 children, 6 living
{66}-67 Downs David,57, married 7 years
Eva, 25, wife, married 7 years, 1 child living
Jessie, daughter, 5
{66}-68 Stevens, Jesse,27, married less that a year, farmer
Lyda, 20, married no children
... It would appear from the census that all three families lived in one house, But as Alan H. Hawkins author of the book "Genealogy of the Jipson Family of Maine" states that he was told that the three houses was side by side.
......2003 I found her grave in what is known as the Cole Cemetery, Springfield, Maine.

...On May 22, 2003 I guess because of us buring my best friedn my mother yesterday that is why I am writing this today. So i wanted to write down things I remember most. I remember going my lunch breaks from school to the restaurant and eating. I know we had out ups and downs but the past few years of her life we were very close. For the last 7 years on Sundays we would go for ice cream and a ride we had fun. I loved her very much.
...I saw this in the newspaper and it reminded me of you mom.
God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so he put his arms around you and he whispered "come with me" With tearful eyes we watched you and we saw you fade away, Although we loved you dearly we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, gentle hands were put to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.

(Amaziah Nash born 1794 in Columbia, Me.; died 1866 in Hopkinton, Iowa). Posted here with permission from Donald H. W. Robbins. Revised in April 2003 by Donald H. W. Robbins and Stephen L. Robbins. The original version was the second chapter of an independent study paper titled "The Panic of 1857 : How It Affected the Nation, People in Maine, and Its Finances, and Banking Institutions" (p. 12-20, its introduction on p. 11, and references), dated 01 May 1983. Notes on Amaziah Nash's "Survey Book."
Amaziah Nash was in Calais by 1820, the earliest date found in his book. He built several mills, lived at Bog Brook, then moved to Mill Cove in Robbinston. About 1856 he was overtaken by the economic depression; the Vose family foreclosed on the Nash's sawmill, shipbuilding and store enterprises (as Washington County Court records show). Amaziah Nash and most of his adult children then moved to Hopkinton, Iowa.
Stephen Robbins became aware of the existence of Amaziah Nash's "Survey Book" in 1978 while corresponding with its owner, Bessie (Mrs. John) Wilson, a Nash descendant living in Hopkinton, Iowa. She has since passed away, and the Field Book was (circa 1995) owned by her son, Rodney Wilson (Rt. 2, Box 215, Hopkinton, Iowa 52237). In 1995, another Nash cousin in Iowa was able to borrow the document and make a photocopy for Stephen Robbins. A copy of this photocopy of the "Survey Book" is owned by the Saint Croix Historical Society, Calais, Maine.
The majority of the book consists of accounts related to logging or lumbering in Calais (Steve does not understand them). Many early Calais names appear in this primary source on the Calais economy. But there are several other interesting entries. On p. [1] is a handwritten "Valuable receipts. To make five gallons of good ink for 12 1/2 cents..." from logwood and other ingredients. There are several "grocery lists" and personal accounts from the 1850's. Near the end, on several pages bearing dates between Apr. 21 and May 16, 1856, is a diary documenting trouble (both legal and physical) encountered during the Vose's attempts to take over the Nash properties. And in a few odd places are a few penmanship exercises and accounts obviously made by Nash grandchildren in Iowa.
The entire photocopy comes to 65 sheets on legal-size paper.
A transcription from a portion of Amaziah Nash's "Survey Book" is posted online (see Addendum, Document A, at:
< http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/o/b/Stephen-L-Robbins/FILE/00 49page.html >. This portion is an account kept by an unnamed son of Amaziah Nash (other than his son Isaac). It documents the trouble as Walt Vose tries to foreclose and take over the Nash properties at Mill Cove, Robbinston, Maine.

". . . . [I] came [on train] through Bangor and on up into the North country, arriving in Calais at 8:50 [p.m]. There were five Indians on the train, that got off at Ayers Junction, the station below Calais. I guess they were the descendants of the basket makers that Grandma [i.e., Esther (Gerry] Nash] used to tell of. . . . . Edith and Nellie Gerry live here alone and have farming done on shares. . . . . It is only a little way down the road to Mill Cove and the first afternoon, Edith showed me the site of the old dam and mill built by Capt. Amaziah Nash. Two brooks from Eastern and Western lakes converge and cascade over a great ledge of conglomerate, falling into a pool below. Timbers of the old dam at the top of the ledge may still be seen, and the logs that were floated down to the mill, are some of them, lying moss covered in what was once the mill pond. Farther down the cove there used to be several tide mills, and it is here that the road crosses the bridge you spoke of in your letter."

"I'd like to see your old Bible sometime for I am sure I didn't have the date of Grandfather and Grandmother's [i.e., Amaziah Nash, Senior, and Sarah Jackson] marriage. I have the dates of their death. He was 72 and she was 81 I believe, but I think that is on the grave stones. I was four years old when Grandma [i.e., Sarah (Jackson) Nash] died and I'm sure I can remember. I woke up from a nap and mother [Esther (Gerry) Nash] took me into her room just a short time before she died and she began singing "Happy Day". She used to sing that to me. Mother said that was her favorite song. . . . ."
" . . . . You know[,] we just happened to be going to Hopkinton the day Mrs. Sam Carter was having her sale and Belle Knox told us about it so we stopped. Do you remember the center table Aunt Sarah always had in the SW corner of the parlor? When I saw it I wanted it and got it. I am sure Grandfather Nash [i.e., Katherine's grandfather Amaziah Nash, Senior] made it. I have a walnut bureau he made."
[Bessie Wilson's note: I used to think my father had the family Bible, but since hearing from you [i.e., Steve Robbins, who mentioned Isaac Nash's Bible given to him by his mother Sarah (Jackson) Nash], I've decided it must have been his mother's, and she had her parents and their family written in. In mine -- Isaac William Nash and Almira S. Loring married on Calais Dec. 3 1846 by Rev. David B. Sewall. Yours is different. . . . . Sometime soon I will make a copy of names & dates from this old Bible; It's so near like yours."

"I'm not sure what Amaziah [Nash] Jr. did in Robbinston, but after he moved to Iowa in 1862, he worked with his father in building wagons and carriages. It is believed that Henry Carter helped Amaziah [Nash] Sr. get started again in Iowa."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Source: Ina Byers' typewritten notes, sent to Steve Robbins in envelope postmarked 03 July 1996. Ina has some insights on how Amaziah Nash may have got started in Hopkinton, Iowa.]
"Mary Jackson Nash (born March 9, 1822 in Calais, Me.) (the daughter of Amaziah and Sarah Jackson Nash) in 1850 was engaged to one Samuel Prey. He and a friend Alonzo P. Nash (son of Stillman Nash of Ebenezer and Charlotte Nash of Abraham) were in Delaware Co., Iowa teaching school. Samuel was teaching in Hopkinton and Alonzo was one of the first two teachers in Delhi. Samuel Prey [sic; i.e., Pray] suddenly took ill and died. He was attached to the Henry A. Carter household. It fell to Henry A. Carter to write to Mary Nash about the death of her fiance. His grave is in the Carter plot in Hopkinton. After Samuel's death Alonzo returned to Maine where he soon married and never returned to Iowa.
"Henry Carter's wife Susan died on Dec. 21, 1850 of either childbirth or some other illness. It is thought that Mary may have come to Iowa to see where her fiance was buried and met the Carter family. But this isn't verified. Because in the winter of 1853, Henry journeyed to Robbinston, Me. and he and Mary Nash were married on Feb. 15, 1853 by the Rev. D. W. Sewall. . . . ."
" . . . . I am adding this paragraph on my own -- it is something I have always wondered about. Did Mary Nash make a trip to Iowa to see where Samuel was buried and meet the Carter family, or did Henry correspond with Mary[,] telling her of his wife's death, then continue writing to her or what. Anyway[,] he journeyed to Robbinston, maine where he and Mary were married in Dec. 1953 [sic; i.e., 1853]. . . . ."
" . . . . The following lines are my own thoughts and there is no documented proof that they are true. I met Samuel Carter Jr. in the summer of 1988. He was Henry Carter's grandson. As we both knew [that] Amaziah Nash Sr. had lost everything he owned in Robbinston, Maine. We both believed that Henry Carter gave his father-in-law a helping hand at this point in time, and helped him relocate in Hopkinton, Iowa in the last half of 1857 or first half of 1858, and open a shop in Hopkinton where he was making wagons and carriages or at least wheels for these vehicles. Family tales passed down stated that he had done both. But I have been unable to find anything to say which he did.
"Mary (Nash) Carter had a sister also living in the area at this time. Harrison and Martha (Nash) Hill had moved to the area of Buck Creek on a farm about 1855. Whether this family had the means to also help the destitute Nas[h] family, I do not know.
"If Henry had helped the Nash family, he didn't probably have the additional funds to help work on the college [i.e., Bowen College, later named Lennox College] for that period of the year the building was left unfinished."
[Note: Ina Byers included a transcript from "A Three Volume History of Delaware County -- Belle Bailey":
" . . . when the panic of 1857 hit, the [college] building lay unfinished for over a year or more, money was scarce through this period."

The stone house on the St. Croix River in Calais, now is a historical site. Owned and lived in by Brand Livingstone, it is at the Lodge District or Bog Brook (L. A. Gray said, "I don't know where one [district] begins and where the other ends". The house was built between 1820 and [the] 1830s for (not sure) [or] by Amaziah Nash Sr., and he lived in it for a time while building it, my grandfather [William] Allen Sharman told me [i.e., L. Austin Gray, Jr.]" It was long called the Captain Jellison House. Jellison was probably the one for whom the house was built. About 1880 Julia Livingstone (grandmother to Brand Livingstone) bought the house. It is a small house built of split granite, quarried from the farm. Just across the road and near the house, is also a stone dock [which] was made on the river bank. When the tide was out, everything was mud and no ship could go upriver any further, but on a high tide they could go up nearly to the International Bridge at Ferry Point. Mr. Gray said, "In fact, in 1939 I saw a ship from Scotland loaded with coal in the river nearly up to the International Bridge".

[Source: C. Brand Livingstone (President, St. Croix Historical Society, Holmes Cottage, P.O. Box 242, Calais, Maine 04619), letter to Ina Byers, 04 February 1996. Photocopy sent by Ina Byers to Steve Robbins, in envelope postmarked 21 February 1996. Steve Robbins' note: Mr. Livingstone owned and lived in the Stone House at the time this letter was written; Ina Byers had visited there in the summer of 1995.]
"As we discussed the Stone House I told you it was built by Theodore Jellison, a man who owned the property including the granite quarry just above the main road. He hired stone cutters and built a wharf out on the river front, to ship granite to be used as a building material. We do not know who the actual workers were as there is not that kind of a record, only that Jellison paid taxes on the land, quarry, house and wharf in 1825. How long it took to build we can only guess, but I think it must have been started in 1822 or 3.
"You said that Amazia[h] Nash's place of residence was 'the other side of Boggs (Bog) Brook from where the Heslin Motel is.' If he lived in that area he would only be a mile or two from the Stone House and could well have been a granite worker who helped erect this house. Certainly the timing is right if he was building in the Calais area in 1824. The Stone House was probably finished by that time."

"I wonder if Amaziah & Sarah gave each child a Bible as they got married. Martha Hill also had a Bible that went from Amaziah's family to Martha's family. If A. Jr. had one, I have no idea who got it."

The site of Amaziah Nash's mill was on the Sweeney Road "at Mill Hollow".
Mill Cove was the site of Nash's store and 3 houses that Amaziah Nash built.
At Mill Cove was the site of Amaziah Nash's shipyard.
At Mill Cove there was a school house on the corner.
