Moses Rowley, Senior, "late of Saquanesset, now of Machimodus in Haddam," bought 60 acres of land of Jonathan Gilbert, originally laid out to John Henderson of Haddam, deceased. The date of this deed is May 3, 1692, and there is another deed dated October 4, 1693, which names Moses Rowley. An agreement of the heirs of James Bates of Haddam, dated Feb. 1691-2, refers to "mony in moses rowlyes and John Ackley's hands, to be reserved to pay debts with." These records indicate that he removed to Haddam as early as 1691

Death Notes: Child - Nicholas Ackley
Ackley, Nicholas, of Haddam, died April 29, 1695. He left a widow and. children, John, Nathaniel, James, Hannah, Mary, Sarah and Lydia-perhaps another son. He moved from Hartford to Haddam. (For Ashley, p. 13, read Ackley.-.'-see P. 110.)
General Notes: Child - Nicholas Ackley
Nicholas may have been one of several young men brought over to America by William Wadsworth. Daniel Brainerd and Nicholas were pioneers of Haddam CT.
Nicholas had two pieces of land recorded to him in Hartford CT one piece bought after 1655
and sold on Mar 20 1667/8 to a John Mitchell. The second piece he sold to Nathaniel Standley in Dec 1663.( the 3 could have been an 8) The street Nicholas lived on in Hartford became known as Trumbull St. ( one of his great grandchildren was named Trumbull).
He served as a fire marshall during the time he lived in Hartford.
Nicholas was one of 28 young men who bought land in 1662 at "30 Mile Island" later called Haddam. Nicholas moved his family to this land in 1667. Nicholas owned in Haddam a 14 Acre home lot as well as the "little Island at the lower end of the cove" and a "6 acre lot towards Saybrook. This cove is where the Salmon River enters the CT River.
At his death his estate showed a valuation of 188-11-00 pounds. He did not leave a will and on 5 Sept 1695, administration of his estate was granted to his son John. On 20 Mar 1696 the widow his 2nd wife and his children signed an agreement giving 12 pounds and the estate she bought to the "house" to his 2nd wife and to the eldest son John a double share and to each of the other children a single share.

(Another source lists among passengers an Ackley, ON THE TWENTIETH OF MARCH, 1630 a group of men and women, one hundred and forty in number, set sail from Plymouth, England aboard the good ship, the "Mary and John". It landed in Nantucket, Massachusetts on the Thirtieth of May, 1630.
They soon settled at Dorchester, Massachusetts. Five years later, a group of this so-called "Dorchester Company" traveled 110 miles through the New England wilderness to settle in Windsor, Connecticut, where a trading post had been established as the first English settlement in the Connecticut River Valley 26 September, 1633. Surviving the rigors of the New England winters, Indian hostilities and other challenges, they raised their families in the staunch Puritan traditions. ***This source is not verifiable at this point and is only included as possible but not entirely credible.)
WILLIAM SPENCER, of East-Haddam, Conn., was married to Sarah Ackley, daughter of Nicholas Ackley, of Haddam, one of the first settlers of that town.
ACKLEY, NICHOLAS, was located on lot No. 42 Trumbull street, in Hartford, in 1665, and was chimney viewer in Hartford in 1662--he for a time lived at 30 Mile Island, at the lower end of the Cove, and had a 6 acre lot toward Saybrook.
the sons of Nicholas, settled east of the Connecticut river
Nicholas Ackley was located on lot No. 42, Trumbull Street, Hartford, CT., in 1665. In 1662 he was chimney viewer in Hartford.
In the "Earliest Volume of the Town Votes of Hartford" appears this record, "It is ordered that evry howse shall have a ladder or tre at Most who shall reach (within) Two ffoote of the Topp of his howse uppon (the) forfeteur of fave shillings A mounth for (each) mounth he shall want the same." This vote gives us a hint only of the duties of a chimney-viewer, but Hinman, in his "First Puritan Settlers," makes the matter plain, thus--"As the office of Chimney-viewer is attached to the names of some of the first settlers, I take the liberty of explaining the cause. Immediately after the organization of the town of Hartford as a town, or, rather, as a company of land-holders, a law was enacted that all chimneys should be cleansed by the owner, once in a month, by a penalty provided by law. Therefore, that the law should be strictly
Page 217
obeyed and carried out by the inhabitants, for several years, a committee of respectable men (for no others held offices at that day) were appointed to see that all householders fully obeyed the law. It was also a law that each householder should provide a ladder for his house, where there was not a tree standing by his house, which reached within two feet of the top of the chimney. This law also came within the duties of the viewers of chimneys. At the time these laws were in force, men were selected to fill every office, high or low, with a single eye to the fact, that men who held the offices, should be of such a standing in society, as the men should honor their offices, and not the offices the holders of them. To effect this object, you find men who had filled a seat at the General Court, the next year filling the office of Hayward or Chimney-viewer. It was this practice of our worthy ancestors, which caused an officer--either civil or military, who held any place of power, to hold on to his titles with a tenacity--that living or dead--he never lost them."
Nicholas Ackley was one of the twenty-eight young men who, in 1662, bought the land where the Haddams and some adjoining towns now stand. This purchase was long denominated "The lands at Thirty Mile Island," from an Island in Connecticut River which, it was calculated, was thirty miles from its mouth. The Indians, who reserved for themselves forty acres, together with Thirty Mile Island, and the right to hunt and fish where they pleased, roamed over the plantation for many years.
Dr. Field says: "For forty or forty-five years from the time of settlement, the people were accustomed to carry arms with them to the place of public worship, that they might be able to defend themselves in case of a sudden attack." As the men could not have stayed in their homes with guns in their hands all the rest of the week, it is difficult to conjecture what comfort or security was left with the women and children. However, we have no account of any serious mischief to the first planters or their immediate descendants. All the inhabitants settled, at first, along the western border of the river, in what is now called Old Haddam. The larger
number of their houses stood near together, on a hill overlooking at the present day, a landscape of great beauty.
Most of the owners of these lands settled on them in the summer of 1662 or soon after; but some of the company were so slow in improving their rights that action was taken by the little colony to prompt them. Nicholas Ackley was one of these delinquents and he was reminded that he was wanted at Thirty Mile Island, in a way that resulted in the following promise from him to assure them that he would in fact become one of them, although it was perhaps, pleasanter to view chimneys in Hartford:
"This writing made ye eight off November 1666 bindeth me niklis Akly of harford to come with my ffamely to settle att thirte mille Island by ye twenty ninth of October next inseuing date hearof ealso to have my part of fence up yt belongs to my home lot by ye Last of next insueing as of failing hearof to forfit ten pounds to ye inhabitant of thirte mile Island as witness my hand and Seall
Nicholas Ackly
witnes James Bate."
Nicholas Ackley appears to have kept this agreement, as he removed from Hartford, and his name is recorded among the "first settlers at Thirty Mile Island," where he had a "six acre lot towards Saybrook," and he owned the little island near the Cove. Every one of his sons, seven in number, moved to the east side of the Great River, but he died on the west side. Having settled there nearly thirty years before, he still kept his home on that side. Dr. Patterson says: "March 19, 1671-2, Nicholas Ackley and wife Hannah, of Haddam, deeded to William Spencer, of same town, all their right in land between Sammon River and Lyme bounds; both divided and undivided. The Hartford probate records show that he died at Haddam April 29, 1695, and that his 2nd wife, Miriam, survived him

Death Notes: Husband - Nicholas Ackley
Ackley, Nicholas, of Haddam, died April 29, 1695. He left a widow and. children, John, Nathaniel, James, Hannah, Mary, Sarah and Lydia-perhaps another son. He moved from Hartford to Haddam. (For Ashley, p. 13, read Ackley.-.'-see P. 110.)
General Notes: Husband - Nicholas Ackley

General Notes: Husband - Oliver Ackley
Few Americans acquire the honor of having their name tagged to a body of water. Oliver Ackley is known today mostly for the Cutler pond which bears his name. Some fall into the habit of calling Oliver Ackley Pond: the "Pond" or "Ackley Pond;" but the slightly larger than ten acre pond, which most naturalists figure has changed little since early days of the 1780's Town settlement, cannot possess a more appropriate label.
Oliver Ackley was born at Machias on January 27, 1783. He took his first infant breath as a son of former British colo-nials, Benajah and Anna (Holmes) Ackley, who lived in the rebellious Shiretown during those dicey times. When the Peace of Paris was signed on October 19, 1783 (presently known as Sweetest Day) a mu-sician drummer, John I. Davis attended General George Wash-ington at Yorktown. Davis was one of Cutler's first settlers.
Oliver Ackley married Elizabeth McGuire of Cutler on April 4, 1806. For a while he carried mail to Cutler inhabi-tants beginning in 1837.
The first Cutler Post Office was established in 1830. Ack-ley's contract letter from the Post Office Department on April 22 1837 stated: "Sir, Before you can receive pay for carrying the mail, it will be necessary for you to furnish the certificate of the Postmaster at the beginning or end of the route, as to the date of the ac-tual commencement of service under your present contract, which expires on the 30th of June next. Respectfully, S. R. Hobbie, First Assistant P.M. General."
Earlier, in the fifty-second year of United States Independence as one document proudly explains, or 1828, Ackley was given an appointment by Gov-ernor Enoch Lincoln of Maine. Mind you, Maine was only an 8-year-old State in the Union, and Cutler in but its second year as a town, when the fish with fisheries not surprisingly were of concern under state supervi-sion.
Ackley's appointment reads: "our Governor, reposing special trust and confidence in the integrity, ability and discre-tion of Oliver Ackley of Cutler, hath nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of our Council, appointed the said Oliver Ackley, Inspector of Pickled Fish, and smoked Alewives and Herrings for the town of Cutler, in the County of Washington."
Ackley holds the distinc-tion of being Cutler's first recorded government official appointed by both the governor of the Great State of Maine, and the Assistant Post Master Gen-eral of the United States.
That first Post Office of 1830, where Ackley brought the mail, was shipped from Machi-asport to Cutler, for distribution from the Burnham Mill Lot. This Post Office operated later under the name of the "North Cutler Post Office," and after the dismantling of the sawmill at Turner Stream outlet was operated by Elvie Bryant in the present house of Arlene Bryant high on the ridge of a glacial moraine overlooking Little Ma-chias Bay.
Mail is generally reliable incoming commodity; whereas the prospect of fish on the other hand is another kettle of fish altogether.
Several years ago, while collecting information at the Maine State Archives in Augusta, I ran across the fol-lowing handwritten note of Oliver Ackley. In a good script, with bleak aspect, he penned:
n "Mr. Edward Rufsell, Esq.,
n Secretary of State, Portland:
Cutler, February 29th, 1830. Dear sir. I received a letter from you a requesting me to represent to you as near as may be in my power the quantity of dried and pickled Fish which was brought and imported into this Town in the year of 1828. Sir at the best of my knowledge there was about two hundred & fifty quen-tles of dried fish and about twenty barrels of pickled Fish. I dont know as I understand your question whether it means the dried and pickled Cod fish only, but for fear I dont answer your question I will send you the quantity of smoked fish which I inspected in the year of 1828 was 13.00 Boxes, and the year 1829 - 1.35 Boxes. Our fishery here used to be of considerable value but late years it is getting to of no great value. Respectively your most Obedi-ent Servent - Oliver Ackley
- Inspector of Fish."
The next time you go fishing in Oliver Ackley Pond, remember: tell those you meet that you weren't just dangling a line in any run-of-the-mill, generically-tagged pond, but in an historically named authentic and geologic marvel - the real thing: Oliver Ackley Pond!

This Otis is mixed up with that of Oliver. Their children were the same, same birth dates, the wives named Nancy Annison and Nancy A Dennison. Probably the same woman, children belonging to one or the other. At any rate, this needs to be clarifiedThis Otis and that of James were mixed.
I removed Edgar J from this family, as he showed two sets of natural parents. It needs to be cleared up.

3. Obituary, Pictou Advocate, October 28, 1898 - Pictou, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Canada
Many readers of the Pictou Advocate will learn with sincere regret of the death off Mrs. Crerar, widow of the late Captain David Crerar, which took place Saturday evening. She had not been in good health for some months, but her condition was not considered serious, and upon her return from Halifax a few weeks ago, where she had gone for medical advice, she went to spend a short season with her daughter, Mrs. Edward Carson. Here she was taken ill and passed away three days later. Mrs. Crerar was dearly loved by a large circle of friends and acquaintances, and the esteem in which she was generally held in the community was evidenced by the large concourse of people that gathered on Monday afternoon to attend the last rites. The deceased leaves one son Peter, member of the Northwest Mounted Police, two daughters, Mrs. Thomas Hudson and Mrs. Edward Carson of Pictou, who have sincere sympathy in their sad and sudden bereavement.

Description:
The Gene Pool was created while gathering genealogical data for use in the study of human genetics and disease. Compiling data for genetic research does not require the same type of documentation as traditional genealogical research. The genes themselves verify relationships and qualify or disqualify a person from a particular study. Citing the source of every genealogical fact in the electronic gene pool was deemed unnecessary and cost prohibitive by medical researchers. Millions of individual records were created from birth, marriage and death records; obituaries; probate records; books of remembrance; family histories; genealogies; family group sheets; pedigree charts; and other sources. The records collected that did not fit a specific study became the project's "by-products" and were schedule to be discarded. After viewing the quality of the source material used to create the gene pool and despite the absence of cited documentation, the electronic rights to the data were purchased, rather than see it destroyed.
Extended Description:
Thousands of families are known to be present in the database, containing 20 million names in 5 million records. This data covers the entire U.S. for a wide expanse of years. At a minimum, each record contains an individual's name, date and place of birth, and the name of his or her father. A complete record will contain the following information for an individual: Name, Date and Place of Birth, Date and Place Married, Date and Place of Death, Name of Spouse, Name of Father, Name of Mother, Use this database as a finding tool, just as you would any other secondary source. When you find the name of an ancestor listed, confirm the facts in original sources, such as birth, marriage, and death records, church records, census enumerations, and probate records for the place where the even took place.

The district of Hartford, located in central Connecticut, was home to thousands of colonists in the seventeenth century. This database is a collection of probate records from the district between 1635 and 1650. Each probate record contains the filing individual's name, date of probate, and location of filing. Entries often reveal the person's close family relations such as spouse, heirs, and siblings, along with the names of witnesses. Additionally, marriage, burial, and death dates are provided when relevant to the document. Page numbers refer to the original probate book kept by the district. With nearly 1000 entries and about 5000 names, this collection can be a valuable source of detailed information for those seeking ancestors from colonial Connecticut.
