This Thomas came over aboard the Mary & John in 1630 according to family histories and by the Mary & John Clearinghouse, where he is on their master index as #648: "Tolman, Thomas (1608-1690) of Dorchester, MA. Possibly from Salcombe Regis, Devon 14:65"[9]. Richard Anderson, however, demurs[4]. He maintains that Thomas probably migrated alone and was from the same village as Roger Clapp[5], but makes no mention of the Mary & John.

The progenitor of this line and other lines of the WELLS family in America was Thomas WELLES, b. at Rothwell, Northamptonshire, England, about 1598 and is said to have been a descendant of the Essex an older branch of the family and much distinguished in England and having an estate and Manor House, Welles Hall first called Rayne Hall, in Essex, England. The founder of this family was Simon DE WELLES, who was at the siege of Jean D'Acre in Palestine, with Richard Coeur de Lion in 1191 and had this special grant of Arms by the King: Paly of five, gules and or, on a canton argent, a mullett sable.
GOVERNOR THOMAS WELLS, b. circa 1598 in Rothwell, England; d. 14th January, 1660, in Weathersfield, Connecticut, came to New England and settled at Hartford, Connecticut, in the summer of 1636. The next year was chosen Magistrate by the Planters and was in active participation of the duties of the office during the Pequot Wars in 1637. This office he held every successive year from this date until his decease in 1659-1660, a period of twenty-two years. In 1639 he was chosen the first Treasurer of the Colony, under the new Constitution and successively continued in this office until 1651, at which time on account of other duties asked to be eased of the Treasurer's place and the request was granted. In 1641 he was chosen Secretary of the Colony and held the office in subsequent years. In 1649 he was one of the Commissioners of the United Colonies. In 1654 Governor HOPKINS, being in England and Deputy Governor HAINES having died, he was elected by the whole body of the Freemen, convened at Hartford, Moderator of the General Court and this year was again appointed one of the Commissioners of the United Colonies, but other duties prevented him from serving and this year he was also chosen Deputy Governor in 1655 and in 1656 and 1657 Deputy Governor and in 1658 again Governor in 1659 again Deputy Governor; m. Elizabeth HUNT.

First Sttlers of the Colony.
Welles, Gov. Thomas, came into the colony and located himself at Hartford in the autumn of 1636, and upon the 28th day of March, 1637, he became a member of the Court of Magistrates. In April following an important crisis had arrived. The inhabitants of the colony had been constantly annoyed by the Indians, and particularly by the Pequots, by robberies, murders, and the abduction of two respectable young ladies from Wethersfield, who had been carried among the Indians--which outrages could no longer be submitted to by the English settlers. To redress these grievances a General Court of Magistrates were convened, and the three towns which then formed the colony, were ordered, for the purpose of adding safety to the counsels of the court, to send a committee of three persons from each town, to set as advisers with the General Court. Gov. Welles was one of the Court of Magistrates held on the 7th day of May, 1637, who declared an offensive war against the powerful and warlike nation of Pequots, for the redress of the many grievances they had visited upon the English settlers. It was a most important meetlng and decision not only to the colony, but to all the settlers in New England. The Indians had not only murdered many of the English, but had driven away their cattle, and committed other gross wrongs. After mature deliberation, war was declared, and the result saved the colony, and was of immense advantage to all the other colonies, and much credit was due to Mr. Welles for his course taken in this important step. After this time he appears to have become an important man in the colony. He was uniformly a m ember of the Court of Magistrates after March, 1637, until he was elected Deputy Governor, in 1654. In 1640 he was appointed secretary of the colony, which office he held until 1649, and performed the duty of both offices during the whole period. For a time he also performed the duties of treasurer for the colony in 1639. At the session of the General Court in1653, in March and April, the Governor being absent, Mr. Welles performed the duties of the Governor as Moderator of the General Assembly under the Constitution of the Commonwealth. In 1654 he was elected Deputy Governor, in 1656, 7 and 1659. He was also elected Governor in 1655 and 8. In 1649 he was a Commissioner to the Colony Congress. Gov. Welles was frequently associated with Haynes, Ludlow, Mason and other leading men upon important committees appointed by the General Court. He did much in the formation and union of the colonies in 1643, for the mutual benefit and protection of each other. No one of the distinguished men of his time was more uniformly attentive to all his official duties than Gov. Welles, from his first appointment in 1637, until 1659. He was a constant attendant upon the General Court, except when employed in other public duties. His whole public life being fairly examined, he was as important a prop to the new colony as any of the principal men, except Gov. Winthrop.--He died in 1668, and left a large estate to his children, viz. Thomas, Ichabod, Samuel, Jonathan, Joseph, Rebecca and Sarah. Samuel settled at Wethersfield. The descendants of Gov. Welles are numerous in Connecticut at this time. The most prominent of whom are Hon. Gideon, of Hartford--since his late appointment, at Washington--Thaddeus, Esq., of Glastenbury--Hon. Martin, of Wethersfield, and Doct. H. Welles, of Hartford. Gov. Welles came to Massachusetts in a vessel named the Susan and Ellen, E. Payne, master, in company with Richard Saltonstall, Esq. and family, Walter Thornton and others.
First Sttlers of the Colony.
Welles, Capt. Samnel--died in 1675. His children were, Samuel 16 years old, Thomas 14, Sarah 12, Mary 10, Ann 7, and Elizabeth 5. John, son of Samuel, 1664. Edward, 1644. Thomas, son of Thomas, born 1690.
First Sttlers of the Colony.
Welles, Wid. Elizabeth, Wethersfield--died in 1683. Children, Robert Foot, (died before her,) Sarah Judson, deceased--left children, daughters Churchill, Goodrich, Barnard and Smith. Nathaniel Foot's eldest son Nathaniel and his brother and their children shared in her will, Daniel and Elizabeth--grandson John Stoddard--grandsons Joseph and Benjamin Churchill. She was a sister of John Deming, sen'r. and had a grandson Henry Buck.
First Sttlers of the Colony.
Welles, Samuel, moved from Wethersfield to Stratford, with three sons--Thomas, Samuel, and another, perhaps other children. He was the son of Gov. Welles. Perhaps the same Capt. Samuel who died in 1675.
General Notes: Wife - Alice Tomes
All six children of Thomas and Alice were born in England and traveled with their parents on the "Susan and Ellen" to America in 1635. He owned a share of the Hilton Lands in New Hampshire. He went from Boston, to Saybrook, Connecticut and finally settled in Hartford in 1637. He was magistrate and treasurer of the Colony; Secretary and Commissioner of the United Colonies; elected Governer in 1655 and 1658; and was deputy Governer for several years. He removed to Wethersfield, Connecticut in 1646 and owned land on which part of the Connecticut State Prison now stands. Governer Welles died suddenly January 14, 1659, "being very well at supper and dead before midnight". It is assumed that Thomas Welles was buried in Wethersfield but was later removed to the Ancient Burying Ground in Hartford where the actual spot of interment has been lost. His name is recorded there on the Founders' Monument at First Church, Hartford.
More About GOVERNER THOMAS WELLES: Fact 1: Served as Assistant on Panel of Magistrates in Hartford. Fact 2: As Secretary wrote into legislative record the Fundemental Orders of CT. Fact 3: 4th Colonial Governer of Connecticut. Fact 4: Served as Deputy Governer at time of death.
Marriage Notes for THOMAS WELLES and ALICE TOMES: They came under the influence of a Puritan minister in England and decided to give up their landed gentry status and make the dangerous crossing to the New World. Their children ranged in age from 2 to 17. The first came to Cambridge and made the trek to Hartford with the party of the Reverand Thomas Hooker. They lived the next 11 years there until Alice's death.

The identification of John Towne as the father of William Towne, immigrant to Massachusetts, has been established by research of the Towne Family Association,
http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/brbaylis/myhomepage/index.html. Edmund Eugene Towne 1901,
The Descendants of William Towne. Richard Towne is given as the father of William Towne, but this has been shown to be incorrect. Cf. Towne Family Association. Potential progenitors of this family (Edmund Eugene Towne 1901, The Descendants of William Towne, pp. 5-11): William de la Towne of Alvely, Shropshire, in the year 1274, filed a suit-at-law against a parish officer. In 1275 he sat on a jury at Astley, Shropshire. Thomas at Towne, ca. 1400, owner of land about Charing, he married Benedicta Brampton, only daughter of John Brampton (a.k.a. Detling) of Detling Court from whom he inherited a manor at Throwley, namingit Towne Place. A Towne coat of arms was placed upon the windows of the church in Kennington, Kent County. Shortly thereafter he died, leaving his possessions to his three daughters. Eleanor Towne who inherited the estate at Throwley about 1446 married Richard Lewknor of Challock. William Towne, Doctor of Divinity, 1459, became clergyman of the parish at Stow in Lindsey, Lincolnshire. On 10 December 1470 he was appointed Almoner (collector for the Fund for Alms, obtained by seizure of the property of suicides) to King Henry VI. He died 1496 and is buried in Kings College Chapel. John Towne, Professor of Divinity, succeeded in 1470 to the post of Precentor (choir leader) at the Cathedral of Lincoln. He resigned in 1473 for the Prebend of Dunholme. John Towne of Irby, Lincolnshire, left a will dated 18 November 1540, leaving legacies to Anne Towne, Thomas Towne, and George, as well as to his brother William Towne of Irby. Will proved 1 June 1541.
Robert Towne, 1580, resigned the rectorship of Hockwold. Sir Samuel Towne (date?) obtained possession of Isaack Manor, East Beckham, Norfolk. John Towne, Ludborough, Lincolnshire, wrote his will 24 January 1637,naming sons Leonard Towne, John Towne, and William Towne, and a brother Richard Towne. Richard Towne of Braceby, Lincolnshire, married Ann ______ (her will dated 10 December 1629, proved 10 May 1630). Their children were:
1. Richard Towne, died 1617, leaving wife Alice, son Leonard, and daughter Helen (under age 21).
2. Edward Towne who had children in 1630.
3. Elizabeth Towne, wife of ______ Phillip. Children are mentioned in Ann's will.
4. Helen (Ellen) Towne, wife of ______ Oxman. There were children.
5. Prudence Towne, wife of ______ Walton. There were children.
6. Ann Towne, wife of ______ Armestone.
7. Katherine Towne, baptised 14 October 1599.
8. Mary Towne, baptised 15 April 1601.
9. William Towne, baptised 21 May 1603. This William Towne is notthe ancestor of the Towne family in America.
10. Margery Towne.
A Towne was an alderman in Nottingham in 1760.

Parents of William Towne given as Richard Towne (12 December 1568 Heydour, Lincolnshire, England - Braceby, England) and Ann Denton (ca. 11569 Heydour - 10 May 1630), marriedf 16 February 1588/9 Heydour. His parents Leonard Towne (1540 Heydour - ) and Ellen Greene (1544 Heydour - ), married 6 August 1565 Heydour. About Towne, Vol. 1, #3, p. 25, 1981. Name Towne stems from "tun"meaning the hedge or wall, or other border, indicating the limits of a town. W.G. Davis 1927, The Ancestry of Lieut. Amos Towne 1737-1793 of Arundel (Kennebunkport), Maine, p. 3. Great Yarmouth records show the baptisms of Arthur, son of John and Alice, and William, son of John and Elizabeth. Davis assumed that Elizabeth (Alice) died before1600 at which time there is a marriage 1 September 1600 between John Towne and Margaret Walden. As later burial records exist for Elizabeth, this marriage must concern a different John Towne.

There seems to be some confusion as to the real identity of the parents of William Towne. Some have written that he is the son of Richard Towne and Ann Denton, others John Towne and Elizabeth Clarke.
However, Historical Documents seem to support that John Towne and Elizabeth Clarke are his parents, and I have written this family tree with them as the parents of William.
In the Norfolk Record Office Norwich England, there is an entry in the Parish Register of St. Nicholas Parish Church, Yarmouth. " William Towne, baptized 18 March 1598, son of John and Elizabeth Towne."
His marriage to Joanna Blessing and the baptism ,of 6 of their children, is also recorded in the Parish register. -- PL
Baptismal records for both William and brother Arthur are from the Great Yarmouth Register for this period. -- PL
The first record of William Towne in America appears in the town book of Salem in 1640 when he granted " a little neck of land right over and against his house on the other side of the river". In the same year he sued John Cook in what seems to be a boundary dispute and obtained a verdict and costs. It is probable that he was in Salem some years before 1640, however. The best opinion seems to indicate that the grants were made before 1635 when the town records began. William Towne's name appears on this list, and it was in the North Fields that he lived. In 1651 he purchased land in the neighboring town of Topsfield from William Paine of Ipswich. He sold his Salem property, to Henry Bullock, in 1652 and bought additional land at Topsfield in 1656. He was made a commoner of Topsfield in 1661 and his wife was dismissed from the Salem church to that of Topsfield in 1664. On the occasion of the marriage of his son, Joseph, to Phebe Perkins, daughter of Deacon Thomas Perkins, in 1663, William Towne deeded two-thirds of his real property to Joseph, with whom he and his wife doubtless lived for the remainder of their days.
At the June term od court, 1673, Joanna Towne was appointed to administer the estate of her husband, which fixes the approximate date of William Towne's death.

Parents John and Elizabeth Towne. Baptized 18 March 1598/9 in Great Yarmouth. The Salem witchcraft trials (which affected William and Joanna'sdaughters Rebecca, Mary, and Sarah) have been recently treated byFrancis Hill 1995, A Delusion of Satan. The hysteria of the youngpersons who began the events is attributed to: 1) the repressive andintolerant strictures of Puritanism which allowed little individualfreedom, exerted control by terror and shame, and ensured a monotonyof life filled with anxiety; 2) the additional discipline and controlexerted by a strong class structure; 3) the influence of rigid andmerciless, if not outright paranoid, pastor Samuel Parris who wasobsessed with seeing evil everywhere; 4) a life with strong emotionaland physical hardships including the constant fear of disease and of Indian attack among families who lived dispersed in a ruralcommunity; and 5) the recent revocation in 1684 of the colony'scharter and right to self-rule, an action which made uncertain thelegal status of all property ownership, the fundamental basis of thelivelihood of the inhabitants, although property disputes dated backdecades to 1639 and 1643 because both Salem and Ipswich had beengranted permission by the Massachusetts General Court to found avillage (later Topsfield) in the same locale. In this context, theonly outlet was psychological hysteria, in which the individuals wereconsidered to not be in control and hence not culpable, and which also provided a diversion to others.
The specific context of Salem Village, however, allowed aninitial outbreak of hysteria to get well of hand. The Village was inthe unfortunate situation of being a separate community, but legallypart of somewhat distant Salem Town. Local disputes, such as whetherto establish a local church and appointment of a local pastor, thusbecame long running without the means of resolution. In addition, the rural provincial values of Salem Village were increasinglychallenged by the growth of Salem Town's merchantilism, its growingprosperity which was not shared by the agrarian populace, and itsmore liberal attitudes toward religion and life; economic and socialconflict was occuring between an established and entrenched elite andmore prosperous newcomers. Those first accused were misfits orsocial (but not geographic) outsiders. In due course, however, thedelusions of disturbed youth may have been deliberately guided byThomas Putnam directly against those he considered his social, religious and economic enemies. WILLIAM2 TOWNE (John1) was baptized in the church of St. Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, on March 18, 1598/9. He was married to Jone (Joanna) Blessing on April 25, 1620, in the same church, where, between 1621 and 1634, their first six children were baptized. Inasmuch as the name Blessing has not been found after considerable search in the Norfolk County records at Norwich and as the marriage record of "Jone" is the unique instance of the name in the parish register at Yarmouth during the period searched (1558-1611), it would seem probable that she was a foreigner, many emigrants from Germany and the Low Countries having been attracted to Yarmouth by the herring fisheries in the sixteenth century. A general search for the name in records covering all England has been fruitless, and families named Blessing now living in the United States claim a German origin. The first record of William Towne in America appears in the town book of Salem in 1640 when he was granted "a little neck of Land right over against his house on the other side of the river." In the same year he sued John Cook in what seems to have been a boundary dispute and obtained a verdict and costs. It is probable that Towne was in Salem some years before 1640, however. The list of grants by the town to that portion of its territory called the North Fields is undated and the best opinion seems to indicate that the grants were made before 1635, when the town records begin. William Towne's name appears on this list, and it was in the North Fields that he lived. In 1651 Towne purchased land in the neighboring town of Topsfield from William Paine of Ipswich. This farm contained forty acres "part of which is plow land, another part is meaddow, another part is upland unplowed, all lying together," bounded by William Howard toward the east, Walter Roper on the north and a "Sertaine River" toward the south or southwest. There were also included two acres on the south side of the river. He sold his Salem property to Henry Bullock in 1652 and bought additional land at Topsfield in 1656. In 1660 in testifying in a lawsuit his age was estimated at three score years. He was made a commoner of Topsfield in 1661, and his wife was dismissed from the Salem church to that of Topsfield in 1664. On the occasion of the marriage of his son, Joseph, to Phebe Perkins, daughter of Deacon Thomas Perkins, in 1663, William Towne deeded two-thirds of his real property to Joseph, with whom he and his wife doubtless lived for the remainder of their days. Joanna Towne figured in a series of suits brought by and against Rev. Thomas Gilbert, the Topsfield minister, in 1670. Gilbert, by his own testimony and that of his wife, was a sick man and he was doubtless of erratic temperament, but some of his principal parishioners laid his acts and eccentricities to overindulgence in drink, and the court seems to have considered their suspicions credible. Most of the evidence produced dealt with a dinner at the parsonage between two Sunday services at which Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert had Capt. John Gould, Mr. Thomas Perkins, and their wives, and old Mrs. Towne as their guests. A gold cup (surely a rare treasure in seventeenth-century New England) filled with wine was passed about the table and Mr. Gould alleged that Mr. Gilbert drank too freely therefrom. Joanna Towne (her age being given at seventy-five) testified that on Sunday Mr. Gilbert had administered the "sacrament swetly unto us" and that after the service "I was att dinner att Mter Gilberts table ... and sat next to him on his right hand, and though some report that he drank too much of the sacrament wyn ... I believe he is wronged, for I that then sat next him saw no such matter ... And I can saifly take my oath that though our minister had the cup twyce in his hand, yet the first tyme he drank not one drop of it, but gave it out of his hand to Thomas Perkins, bidding him give it to me, for I needed it mor than he, being older. When the cup had gone about, it came into his hand the second time and I am sure ther could not be much in it then (it may be two or three spoon-ful) and that he drank." At the June term of court, 1673, Joanna Towne was appointed to administer the estate of her late husband, which fixes the approximate date of William Towne's death. The property was probably retained by her until her death, and it was not divided until 1682, when Mary, widow of Edmund Towne, Jacob Towne, Joseph Towne, Francis Nourse, Mary Estey and Sarah Bridges addressed to the court "the Humbell peticion of us whos names are under wrighten in way of the seatellment of a small esteat left to us by our Honered ffather deceased about tenn yers agoo who died and leaft no will," and requested that the real estate be assigned to the sons and the personal property to the daughters.

*******************************
Perley in his History of Salem states that William Towne was the son of John and Elizabeth Towne of Yarmouth, and that he was baptized in the Saint Nicholas Parish Church there on March 18, 1598/9. William1 Towne and his wife remained at Yarmouth, and six children were born to them there, but in or about 1640 they emigrated to New England, and settled at Salem, Massachusetts. At Salem, on October 11, 1640, the town "Graunted to William Townde a little neck of land right over against his howse on the other side of the riuer to be sett out by the towne." In June and July, 1640, he had brought an action of debt against John Cook, at Salem. He and Francis Nurse asked the town for a grant of land on March 20, 1647, and it was then ordered that the land be surveyed before a decision should be made as to granting it. In 1652 he removed to Topsfield, Massachusetts, where he purchased forty acres of land, and made further purchases in 1656. In 1652 he sold his land at Salem. He was listed among those to share in the common lands at Topsfield in 1661. In 1663 he gave his son, Joseph Towne, two-thirds of his property at Topsfield, reserving only a third share for himself. He died at Topsfield in 1673, and administration on his estate was granted to his widow, June 24, 1673. His widow died in or about 1682, and on January 17, 1682, the six children signed a petition for the settlement of her estate. According to "The Four Blessing Sisters", by Walter Goodwin Davis, an article in the American Genealogists, Vol 33 pages 199 - 206; "Although William is first recorded at Salem in 1640, it is possible that the family emigrated a few years earlier, with the Buffums and the Firmages. The eldest son, Edmund, who was apprenticed to Henry Skerry in Great Yarmouth, sailed with his master in 1637, either on the Rose of Great Yarmouth, or the Henry and Dorothy of Ipswich, two vessels commanded by Wm. and William Andrews Jr., arriving in Boston in June. Skerry and his family settled in Salem." "Upon the east coast of England, 120 miles northeast from London is the old town of Yarmouth. Among its venerable buildings is St. Nicholas Church (founded A.D. 1123). In which on 25 March, 1620, William Towne and Joanna Blessing were m. They were the grandparents of John, the leading man in the English settlement at Oxford. Twenty years after this m. six of their ch. had been baptized in that Church and the family joined the emigrants to America. They resided first at "Northfields," Salem, removed 1652 to Topsfield, there they settled (History of Oxford - page 720) 1637; Came to America on ship Rose from Great Yarmouth, leaving Ipswich and arriving 6/1637 with wife and 5 or 6 children. The land bordered on a swamp at the s, was common belonging to Salem at Ryal side, and ran 80 rods to the northward. This lot sold to Nathaniel Felton of Salem, on his removal to Topsfield. (George Towne book)1651; Bought land in Topsfield from early proprietor William Paine of Ipswich, containing "forty acres of ground or thereabouts, whereof 6 acres is by the seller (cellar) which William Howard of Topsfield built, and about 32 acres joyning up to the sayd 6 acres eastward of it, part of which is plow ground, another part is meadow, another part is upland, unplowed, all lying together, having the meadow and the plow ground of the said William Howards towards the east, and the ground of Walter Roper towards the north and a certain river towards the south or southwest, also a little piece of meadow of about 2 acres lying on the south side of the river directly against the plains of the said William Howard, having ye grounds of the said William Howard towards ye East and the said River towards ye North and upland towards the South." His property was partly on the boundary line between Topsfield and Salem (the part known as "The Farms" or "Salem Village". The site of his home may have been on the w side of Main St, nearly opposite Maple St. and on the highest ground about midway of two apple trees formerly standing near the street. This site is near what is known as the Estey house, and on the opposite side of Main St. (George Towne book; Currents of Malice - McMillen) The Towne children were brought up in a house which was located "near the intersedtion of South Main Street and Salem Street." (Topsfield and the Witchcraft Tragedy -Topsfield Historical Society Publication) In the latter part of October 1756, Nathaniel Porter and Thomas Baker, selectman of Topsfield, sent a yeoman to Boston to transport the French family of Michael Dugoy to town in accordance with an order of the Province to distribute the French imigrants. William1 TOWNE, the emigrant ancestor of the Towne Family of Topsfield, MA, was bp. 18 March 1598/9 in the church of St. Nicholas at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk County, England and d. ca. 1673 at Topsfield, MA. He m. Joanna/Jone BLESSING (b. ca. 1600 in England and d. by 1682 at Topsfield, MA) on 25 Apr 1620 in the same church, where, between 1621 and 1634, their first six children were baptized. Based on research by Walter Goodwin Davis [4], it seems that William TOWNE most likely was the son of John and Elizabeth (or Alice) TOWNE. The only Towne entries in the Great Yarmouth parish register for the period around 1600 are as follows:
28 Aug 1597. Arthur, son of John and Alice Towne, baptized.
18 March 1598/9. William, son of John and Elizabeth Towne, baptized.
1 Sept 1600. John Towne and Margaret Walden, married.
Since it is not uncommon to find the names of Alice and Elizabeth used interchangeably, it is therefore quite possible that Arthur and William had the same mother. It appears that after the death of his wife Elizabeth, John TOWNE m. Margaret WALDEN on 1 Sept 1600. There are no further Towne items in the parish register until the marriage of William TOWNE in 1620. Since the name Blessing could not be found by the above researcher after a considerable search of the Norfolk County records at Norwich and as the marriage record of "Jone" is the unique instance of the name in the parish register at Yarmouth during the period searched (1558-1611), it seems probable that she was a foreigner. Note that many emigrants from Germany and the Low Countries were attracted to Yarmouth in the sixteenth century by the herring fisheries and that families named Blessing now living in the United States generally claim a German origin.
The first record of William TOWNE in America appears in the book of early grants for Salem, Essex Co., MA: "11, 8 mo., 1640, granted to Wm. Towne, a little neck of land right over against his house on the other side of the river." [1,4]. In the same year he sued John Cook in what seems to have been a boundary dispute and obtained a verdict and costs. It is probable however that William TOWNE was in Salem some years before 1640. The list of grants by the town to that portion of its territory called North Fields is undated and the best opinion seems to indicate that the grants were made before 1635, when the town records begin. William TOWNE's name appears on this list, and it was in the North Fields that he and his family lived.
William TOWNE's residence remained in this part of Salem until 1651, the year following the incorporation of the town of Topsfield, when he purchased a tract of land in Topsfield from William Paine of Ipswich, "containing forty acres of ground or thereabouts, whereof six acres is by the seller, which Wm. Howard, of Topsfield, built, and about thirty-two acres joyning up to the sayd six acres eastward of it, part of which is plow ground, another part is meaddow, another part is upland unploughed, all lying together, having the meadow and the plow ground of the said Wm. Howard towards the east and the ground of Walter Roper towards the north, and a sertaine River towards the south or south-west. Also, a little piece of meddow of about two acres lying on the south side of the river, directly against the plains of the said Wm. Howard, having ye grounds of the said Wm. Howard towards ye East and the said River towards ye North and upland towards the South."
He sold his Salem property to Henry Bullock in 1652 and bought additional land at Topsfield in 1656. In testifying in a lawsuit in 1660, his age was estimated at three score years. He was made a commoner of Topsfield in 1661, and his wife was dismissed from the Salem church to that of Topsfield in 1664. In 1663, "in consideration of natural affection and the contemplated marriage of their sonn, Joseph Towne, with Phebe Perkins, the dau. of Thomas Perkins," William TOWNE and his wife conveyed to their son Joseph two thirds "of the home wherein they then did dwell, with Barne, out-houses, yard, gardens, orchards, lying situate and being in Topsfield, together with a parcel of broken upland by the meddow side, only a cartway reserved between the said land and the meadow towards the South, and the land of Jacob Towne towards the East, and the land of Jacob Towne and Edmund Towne towards the North, and the lands of Isaac Estie towards the West -- also, another parcell of land broke up and unbroken, containing, by estimation, thirty acres, bounded by the way towards the South-East and North-East, and a way also towards the South West; the land of Zacheus Gould and Edmund Towne towards the North-West, and the land of Edmund Towne and Isaac Estie towards the North. Also, a parcell of meddow lying on the North side of the river, having the river for the bounds towards the South, a highway towards the West, and a way towards the North, and meddow of Jacob Towne towards the East, containing, by estimation, fourteen acres." For the remainder of their lives, William TOWNE and his wife doubtless lived with their son Joseph.
At the June term of court, 1673, Joanna TOWNE was appointed to administer the estate of her late husband, which fixes the approximate date of William TOWNE's death. The property was probably retained by her until her death, and it was not divided until 1682, when Mary, widow of Edmund Towne, Jacob Towne, Joseph Towne, Francis Nourse, Mary Estey and Sarah Bridges addressed to the court "the Humbell peticion of us whos names are under wrighten in way of seatellment of a small esteat left to us by our Honered ffather deceased about tenn yers agoo who died and leaft no will," and requested that the real estate be assigned to the sons and the personal property to the daughters.
William TOWNE and Joanna BLESSING had eight children (see refs. for details).
