HATHAWAYS PASS 50TH WEDDING DATE TODAY
Surrounded by relatives and friends, Mr. and Mrs. U. M. Hathaway today are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary.
On March 25, 1876, Mr. and Mrs. Hathaway were married at the home of the bride's father, M. A. Curtis, of Auburn township. The Rev. Mr. Richardson, a Windsor pastor living in Auburn, performed the ceremony.
Mrs. J. A. Shales of Sumner, one of the guests at the wedding a half century ago, will be present at the golden jubilee today. Yesterday, she recounted reminiscences of the happy day five decades back. She said; "Nature had seemingly bedecked itself in bridal array for this occasion 50 years ago. After the wedding ceremony, a bountiful wedding dinner was served. Then the younger set of the bridal party accompanied the bride and groom to the Grange gathering ( an organization akin to the Farm Bureau) at Eden (then a prosperous little village) where a banquet was given."
The Golden wedding dinner today will take place at the C. L. Curtis home. Only relatives and Mrs. Shales will attend. Out-of -town guests will include Mrs. Frank Winnette of Minneapolis and Mr. and Mrs. Will Hoyt of Auburn.
Two sons were born to the Hathaways. The oldest son died at the age of 6 years. The other son, Dexter, is now a resident of California.

Obituary, Hawkeye Newspaper
It seemed almost beyond belief, when the word passed along the street Wednesday monring, that our townsman A. K. Hathaway had passed away while asleep that morning, but such is the sad fact. He was boarding with his nephew, Walter Hathaway, and rooming in his building and when he did not come to breakfast about eight o'clock Walter made an investigation and made the startling discovery. The deceased was found in bed. There was no evidence of his having made a move when death came and his features were composed as in sleep. Upon discovery medical aid was summoned and pronounced that from indications death had come about five o'clock a. m. and that the cause was Bright's disease and heart failure.
The deceased had suffered considerably from rheumatism, but was better and the night before Walter was in the store until a late hour and left him in the best of spirits and seemingly in complete enjoyment of health. The funeral service will be conducted from the Methodist Episcopal Church Sunday afternoon. A complete obituary will appear in our next issue.
In Memoriam, ANAH K. HATHAWAY
June 2, 1857 - Jan. 29, 1908
Anah K. Hathaway, the youngest son of Russell and Sarah G. Hathaway, was born at Malone, Franklin county, New York, June 2, 1857. With the family he came west in 1863. They located on a farm near the village of Eden in this county. In 1876 the Hathaway family moved to Bethel township and the deceased lived with them a number of years, before engaging in the jewelry business. He first built in Hawkeye, then moved to Waucoma, thence to Fredericksburg and returned to Hawkeye in 1890 where he has since resided. In 1894 he was converted and became a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and remained true to the faith until the end.
He is survived by three children, Earl and Viola, of Rockford, Ill., Hazel, of Battle Creek, Mich. Of brothers and sisters surviving there are Mary Gardner, of Auburn; Allen and Uriah, of Hawkeye; Edith Hoyt, of Auburn; his parents; two brothers, John and Chas.; one sister Sarah preceded him in death.
At the time of his death he was a member of the town council, and had served in that body for many years. He was a trustworthy public servant and always discharged his duties with fidelity and honor. His success in his own business was due to the painstaking service and sterling honesty in carrying out of all his obligations. He will be greatly missed by his many associates.
The funeral services were held from the Methodist Episcopal Church Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, Elder E. G. Olson, of the Adventist Church at Forest City conducting the service, the mayor and members of the council acting as pall bearers. Notwithstanding the severity of the weather there was a large attendance, all the space in the church being taken up. Interment was made in Hawkeye Cemetery. Owing to the suddeness of his death not all of his wishes regarding his funeral were known but so far as he expressed them, they were carried out. There are few men in town who will be more missed than he.

Nicholas Hathaway was at Braintree, Massachusetts as early as February 24, 1639, when he was granted some land. He moved to Taunton in 1640.
"Daughters of Founders and Patriots" page 120
-----
A tradition has come down from past generations that he was a native of Wales, but this remains to be authenticated.
Nicholas Hathwaye and his family immigrated to Massachusetts in 1638/39 and lived in Braintree14 May 1642 where adjoining lands were described as "betwene the lands of Hattaways and Daniel Lovell". He was not on the list of men of Plymouth Colony able to bear arms in 1643. He may have had several children, including Jacob and Joseph, but certainly had son John.
Soon after the purchase of Taunton, a company of men migrating from some of the older towns came to reside within its borders, and were designated as the 'first settlers', a term which has adhered and served to distinguish them from the first purchasers. Among these appears the name of Nicholas Hathway". Of his previous history nothing is known except what may be learned from the notices of him contained in the records of Boston, which show that he sojourned there for a season and purchased lands in that vicinity before coming to Taunton.
That he became an extensive land owner in Taunton, is evident from the frequency with which his name occurs in the Proprietary Records in relation to sales and adjustments of the original rights and grants.
As he is not included in the military list of 1643, which comprised all able to bear arms between the ages of 16 and 60, it is obvious that if he were living at that period his health must have been inadequate, or he was too far advanced in years to be eligible for service; and as nothing further is heard of him in connection with any public activities the conclusion is reasonable that he did not live very long after establishing his home in New England.
He may or may not have later returned to old England

Born: Baptized: Died: Buried:

General Notes: Husband - Timothy Hatherly
In the reorganization of Plymouth Colony's financial affairs in 1627, Timothy Hatherly became one of the four London Associates, and in the years ensuing figures frequently in colony business. Before coming over in 1634 to reside permanently at Scituate, Hatherly withdrew from this position, although he acted as agent for the other three associates in acquiring a grant of land near the Massachusetts Bay line.
Timothy Hatherly is described as of the parish of St. Olave, Southwark, feltmaker, in an indenture dated 20 April 1629 with John Irish.
While in England between 1623 and 1631 Hatherly was one of the group of merchants who looked over, and frequently worsened, the business affairs of the planters at Plymouth. Then in 1631 he began a pattern, which lasted for four years, of coming to New England early in the year, and then returning to England after a few weeks or months. He is called merchant, and was initially more interested in trade than in settlement, but soon he began to make preparations to stayin New England permanently.
Hatherly came to New England in 1631 on the FRIENDSHIP, landing at Boston on 14 July 1631, carrying letters for Governor Winthrop. [Governor William Bradford places the arrival of this ship in 1630, but his chronology for 1630 and 1631 is muddled, and most of the events placed by him in 1630 actually took place in 1631.] Hatherly made a voyage downeast to look into his fishing affairs, and then in the fall returned to England.
Winthrop reports on 5 June 1632 the arrival at Boston of the CHARLES of Barnstaple, with "Mr. Hatherly, the merchant," aboard. Bradford futher tells us under 1632 that "Mr. Hatherly came over again this year, but upon his own occasions, and began to make preparation to plant and dwell in the country."
Hatherly cannothave stayed for long in New England in 1632, for we find that he was in England in December of that year. On 22 February 1632/3 he arrived again at Plymouthon the WILLIAM. ["These letters [received] per the ship Mr. Trevore master, Mr. Hatherly, merchant, arrived at New-Plymouth."] He apparently returned againto England quite soon, for on 6 August 1633 Francis Kirby, writing from London, stated that "We expect Mr. Hatherly per the next West Country ship, and by him I hope to receive letters." The implication is that Hatherly was already in England, at some West Country port, and was expected momentarily in London.
There is no record of Hatherly's return to New England in 1634, but he first appears again on the Plymouth record on 1 July 1634 as a plaintiff in a civil suit, and again on 23 July 1634 when he turned over to John Winslow his servant Ephraim Tinkham]. He now became a permanent resident of the colony; on 11 January 1634/5 Hatherly joined the church at Scituate and on 5 January 1635/6 he was made a freeman of Plymouth Colony and was elected Assistant

JOSEPH BECKET RICHARDSON, eldest son of Abijah and Revecca 9Malcolm)
Richardson; born in Salem, Mass., Feb. 1, 1800; married Ann Hathorne,
dau. of James Hathorne.
CyrusEaton's History of Thomaston informs us that "he came from
Cushing, Me., to Thomaston," without specifying or giving further
information, except that he "came to Old Thomaston," that is, before the
division of that town, which wasin 1848. Old Thomaston was divided into
the three towns of Thomaston, Rockland and South Thomaston. Rockland was
formerly known as East Thomaston. Cushing is a town on the St. George's
River, Me., south of Waldoborough, which it adjoins, and nearly west of
"Old Thomaston."
No information is afforded ofJoseph Becket Richardson, except that he
had the following children, recorded in Thomaston, but some or all of
them were born previously to the removal.
