WITHAM, MRS. WALTER (THURSTON)
Franklin Times, August 3, 1916
PISGAH WOMAN DIES SUDDENLY
Mrs. Walter Witham died suddenly at the family home in Pisgah Saturday evening. Dr. R. R. Jones, of Woodson, who was called and arrived after she had passed away, expressed the opinion that her death was caused by heart trouble, with heat exhaustion as a contributory cause.
Mr. and Mrs. Witham drove to Jacksonville Saturday and after returning home and eating supper spent the evening on the porch in an effort to cool off before retiring for the night. Shortly after 9 o'clock they went into the house to prepare for bed. Mr. Witham undressed and got into bed and his wife started into another room for an article of clothing and as she reached the doorway fell in the floor.
Her husband went at once to her assistance, thinking she had fainted, but she was gasping for breath and died in a few minutes. Dr. Jones was called at once, but she had been dead some time when he arrived. The coroner's jury at an inquest held Sunday morning returned a verdict in accordance
with the above facts.
Mrs. Witham was the daughter of Charles Thurston, of Murrayville, and was about 25 years old. She was married to Walter Witham eight years ago and is survived by her husband and one son, Haskell, aged seven years, and a daughter, aged 18 months. She also leaves three brothers and five sisters. She was a member of the Baptist church and a woman esteemed by many friends.
Funeral services were conducted form the Union Baptist church near Pisgah Monday afternoon in charge of Rev. F. M. Crabtree, of White Hall, assisted by Elder J. E. Curry. Interment was made in Union cemetery.

General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Tidy
The Tidy family has been difficult to trace back further than Elizabeth's father, who was born in Scarborough, Maine, between 1649 and 1655. In a book about New England genealogy, the author tells about two maiden ladies with that surname and sais that, when they pass on, the Tidy name will have disappeared in America; the line has "daughtered out." Elizabeth's mother, Sarah Libby, was the daughter of the immigrant, John Libby, who came from Wales and died in Scarborough, Maine. In 1676, they were living in Black Point Garrison.

Rev. Samuel Chandler, pastor of the Scotland (York County) Church, made the following entry in his diary:
1746 Feb, 10 I visited the sick -- went up to Mr. Kilgore's to John Wittims -- he say he likes the Quakers best of any -- thinks that way is the Best. His wife says seems more terrible to her than Death - when she thinks of it she is just ready to sink."

A Rev. Samuel Chandler was ordained on 20 January 1742 and became the pastor of the Scotland (York County, Maine) Church. He kept a diary, portions of which still exist, and the following extract gives a picture of his life and that of his parishioners:
"Jan. 6 ...Then I went to Gideon Whitham's. she spoke of her little son now sick of a fever that he sd he was willing to leave Father and Mother to go to Christ -- that he loved Christ -- he reproved others for speaking bad words ..."
In May 1756, England made a declaration of war against France. The recapture of Louisburg was again planned but temporarily postponed to meet the necessities of the greater strategy of the coming campaigns. At this time soldiers of York were actively engaged in service at Ft. Williamand Henry, at the head of Lake George, to which relief had been rushed. The loyal troops arrived there two months later, about October 1756, under the command of Capt. Joseph Holt. His company was attached to the regiment of Col. Ichabod Goodwin, and Gideon Witham was a private. (History of York, Maine, Vol I, by Charles Edward Banks, p. 339). This company was still in service the following year.
