General Notes: Husband - William I Earl Of Surrey De Warren
Wm I was a follower of Wm of Normandy in conquest of
England (1064) The youngest son of Rulfe of Varenne, of
Normandy. Distinguish in Ducal services [1050's], he
received estates in upper Normandy, During the
English invasion, he achieved elevated rank.
He was one of the largest land holders in England
by the end of William's reign. He held a dominant
position in putting down th revolt of the Earls of
Hereford & Norfolk. Wm Warren supported Wm Rufus
[1087-1088] against Robert Curthose & Odo of Bayeux,
resulting in his elevation to Earl of Surrey.
He sustained a greivous wound by arrow in his leg
at the Siege of Prevensey and died at his Priory in
Lewes, June 24, 1088.
Wm Warenne was a kinsman of Wm I. He distinguished
himself a the battle of Hastings, and took away a
consideable amount of the spoils. He aquired large
grants of land ie The Barony of Lewes in Sussex,
The Manors of Carletune & Bennington in Lincolnshire.
He had the absolute confidence of the King, so was
appointed the joint Justice-General with Richard De
Benefactis in adminitering to the entire realm.
Since the opposing barons refused to aquies to his
summonses, the Earls took up armes and quashed
the rebellion at Fagdune. he ordered the the right
foot of each prisoner to be cut off !
Of the rebeling group were: Ralph Wahir of Guarder,
Earl of Norfolk, Roger Earl of Hereford.
Esteemed by Wm Rufus he was created Earl of Surrey.
He had issue by Gundred dau. of Wm Rufus,____
William, Reginald & Grundred-Edith and another dau.
who married Ernise de Colungis. He resided in the
Castle of Lewes, founding a priory at Lewes, building
a Castle of Holt. He used other residencies at
Castle-Acre in Norfolk, Coningsburg and Sandal.
It was reported by Dugdale that Earl Wm Warren
did violenly detain certain lands from the monks of Ely
Though admonished repeatedly by the abbot he failed
in making restitution, and died miserably. The wife of the
Earl was said to have sent 100 shillings in restitution for
his soul. It was alleged the abbot nor the monks
accepted the money of such a person..so damned..

of the family of Gerardini, Tuscanny. Came to England & Wales at time of Edward the Confessor.
Gerald was the ancestor of the Fitzgeralds, Fitzmaurices, Carews, Redmonds and Keatings of Ireland, among others. Otho was so powerful that his favor with the King was greatly resented by the native Norman nobles. He possessed three lordships in Surrey, three in Buckinghamshire, two in Berkshire, four in Middlesex, nine in Wiltshire, two in Hampshire, three in Dorset, and one in Somerset. With him, the family name was changed to Geraldini. Otho's son, Walter fitz-Otho Geraldini, was treated as a fellow countryman by the Normans after the conquest of England in 1066. He succeeded to all of Otho's estates and his name is shown in the Domesday Book of 1087 that listed all the landholders of England. Windsor Castle, a great gray pile overlooking the Thames, had just been built amid the forests of Berkshire, and Walter was appointed its first castellan, as well as warden of the forests. He was, it is clear, one of the most Norman of the Normans -- a race renowned for its adaptability, no less than for its valor and ferocity.
Windsor Castle continued as a baronage for Otho's descendants for centuries, until it passed out of existence due to lack of male heirs in the direct line. An interesting footnote is the story of how the current English royal family, the House of Windsor, took their name from this vacated baronage. During the First World War, there was enormous anti-German sentiment in England, and the king wanted to distance himself from the German House of Hanover, their name at the time. Since the Gherardini family can be traced as the founders of the House of Hanover, it was very convenient that Gerald de Windsor, baron of England, was related both to the English royal family and the Florentine Gheradinis, and hence the House of Hanover (see above). This provided justification (after much research) for the German House of Hanover to become the more politically-correct English House of Windsor, which they remain to this day.
