thecastle and manors of Karryk Macgriffyn and Roscrea, whereby he has

BUTLER FAMILY HISTO RY
The 5th Butler [Theobald] stood fifth on the Roll of the Irish Parliament
of 1295 without any territorial designation, which indicates that the
Chief Butlerage of Ireland carried with it the status of a baron at
least. He then accompanied Edward I to Scotland when the Coronation Stone
was purloined and in 1299, at the age of 30, died unmarried. He was
succeeded by his brother, Edmund, aged about 26, as 6th Butler. Edmund is
an enigma. Like many of hisfamily, he was governor of Ireland. But it
was with some reluctance that he accepted the post. Perhaps he had no
desire for high office, especially undersuch an inept monarch as Edward
II. Whether his governorship was a success is open to question. It was
bedevilled by the Scottish invasion of Ireland under the Bruce brothers
and very likely Edmund was no match for them as a general. Yet, he was
said to have bestowed peace on the land so effectually that he was able
to travel from his barony at Arklow to Limerick, guarded by no more than
three horsemen, and his services were recognised and rewarded. In 1315,
Edward II granted him the castle and manor of Karryk MacGriffyn and
Roscrea to be held by him and his heirs, under the name and honour of
Earl of Karryk. Whether there was an accompanying charter actually
creating him Earl of Carrick is not now known. He was so styled in a
mandate witnessed by Edward IIhim self at York in 1316, and also,
although sporadically, in the Close, Patent and Fine Rolls. But it was an
ephemeral earldom and no one knows why. Historians have argued endlessly
about it. The explanation could be that in the circumstances the title
was of no real consequence. Edmund was already hereditary Chief Butler of
Ireland and, as such, had a high place in Parliament. So"Earl of Karryk"
may not have meant a great deal to him. Unlike his father-in-law, who
bleated that he had the title but not the fleece of Earl of Kildare,
Edmund had the fleece but no need for the title of Earl of Carrick. On
the ot her hand, allegations of treachery which were later made against
him, though false, may have swayed the wayward king against Edmund. At
all events, with his fair name cleared, he turned to more lasting things
in the evening of his l ife, and in March, 1321, set forth with his
devoted younger brother, Thomas, 1st Lord Dunboyne, for Spain, on a
pilgrimage to the shrine of St James of Compostela. Spiritually so
fortified, Edmund died on his return to London in Se ptember; and to this
day the Dunboynes bear three escallop shells ontheir shield to
commemorate that pilgrimage. It was performed more than 150 years before
Pope Sixtus IV placed pilgrimages to the shrine of St James on official
equality with those to Rome and Jerusalem.

Lived at 115 N. View Street, Aurora, while in West Aurora High School. Parents bought the house in about 1895.
Ward produced artwork throughout high school for various booklets and pamphlets, and more. He longed to be a commercial artist. Produced many fine pen and ink drawings as early as 1896.
He was a Tackle for and Captain of the West Aurora Football Team for at least two years: 1896 & 1897, Manager of the Track Team in 1896.
21 Feb 1898 - Sang Baritone in the "City Club Minstrels", under the auspices of the Aurora City Club, in a concert at the Aurora Opera House. His brother Florian sang bass.
Graduated from West Aurora High School at the age of 20, in 1899, in the same Class as his future wife, May Belle Fitzgerald.
1899-1900 - He attended the University of Michigan. At the University of Michigan he was initiated into Phi Delta Theta fraternity on Sunday, November 17, 1899. He was enrolled in a course of study for Commercial Artist, or The Law School, according to Phi Delta Theta fraternity archives / records.
He engaged in farming on the Lett Farm after returning from College.
21 Feb 1906 - Married May Belle Fitzgerald. Lived with his new bride and farmed the Lett Farm.
17 Feb 1907 - Marilla May Montgomery born.
13 Dec 1911 - James Robert Montgomery born.
18 Jul 1913 - Mary Louise Montgomery born.
After 1915 - Moved to a farm on Base Line Road west of Montgomery, IL, and again to another farm on Randall Road just north of Galena Street, in Aurora. He developed Tuberculosis for a while, while living on the farm, and lived in a screened-in house and was quarantined there for a while.
1922 - Moved his family into Aurora, on Blackhawk Street.
13 March 1919 - Abstract of Title and Articles of Agreement - Mary and J. Ivor Montgomery agreed to sell the Land surrounding the Lett farm site, excepting the Lett cemetery and the village hall site (NW corner) to a Frank Ropp, Jr., for $19,000.00, with terms to be satisfied later. Frank Ropp would take out a $9,000 mortgage as part of the transaction monies. Ropp had apparently leased the farm earlier, as mentioned in the Articles of Agreement, how long previously is not indicated.
21 March 1919 - Eight (8) days later - Indenture (Agreement): Frank Ropp, Jr., and wife, Convey and Warrant (sell) to W.P. Montgomery (Ward Pease Montgomery) the same Lett Farm property, for $9,000.00 (so as to satisfy the $9,000 mortgage the Ropps took out as part of the earlier sale), with F. L. Montgomery (Florian) "appointed and made successor in trust, with like power and authority as is hereby vested in said grantee". NOTE: The $9,000 was payable in the form of six (6) various promissory notes, all due five years after 21 March 1919. (In 1919, there existed a rural school, "School No. 6", about 1/2 of a mile north of the Lett Cemetery, across the road to the west, as did exist a "Town Hall" on the east side of the road, as the Lett Cemetery is, 200 yards to the north.) But Ward farmed elsewhere, on Base Line Road and Randall Road, and, after leaving farming and moving into Aurora in 1922, had time to sell Real Estate and did some Surveying, as family history is related. That scenario does not sound like one which allowed him time to farm the farm he was born on.
1922-1923 - Ward took a correspondence art course, during which his talent truly began to emerge. Many of the pieces remain examples of the true artist more than one hundred years after they were carefully penned, painted and drawn. Ward continued to do a little land surveying and sold real estate after the move to Aurora.
25 June to 2 July 1923 - Admitted to hospital in Aurora. He succumbed to a ruptured duodenal ulcer from which his Doctor could not provide relief nor a cure. He died of inoperable conditions.
21 March 1924 - Five (5) years to the day after the Indenture (Agreement) with Frank Ropp, Jr., and wife - LaSalle County Recorder's Office, Release Record No. 609, pg. 173: "That Whereas W.P. Montgomery is dead", F. L. Montgomery (Florian) filed a Release of the Lett Farm property, essentially returning it to Frank Ropp, Jr., and his wife, "for and in consideration of one dollar, and for other good and valuable consideration". What these documents dated 1919 and 1924 indicate is the Lett farm was not "sold for taxes", as was family "legend". But it does create a new void as to why Ward Pease would sign an agreement to buy the farm from Ropp and be farming elsewhere, as early as 1918 and up until 1922. NOTE: His brother, Florian, stated his residence to be the Lett Farm (RD2, Sandwich, IL) when he registered for the WWI Draft on September 12, 1918.
He was a kind, sweet and gentle man, as recorded in his wife May Belle's personal Journal of January 1 to February 4, 1913.
General Notes: Wife - May Belle Fitzgerald
Born in Sullivanville, NY., 1881.
Moved to Illinois with family at the age of 2, in 1883.
Graduated West Aurora High School 1899 (in same class as her future husband). At times, driven to high school in a buggy from Sugar Grove by her father, James Fitzgerald.
Attended Northern Illinois State Teacher College, DeKalb, IL, in 1902, taught in rural schools in Kendall County, IL, then in Morgan Park / East Aurora schools, until she married in 1906. Her Kendall School pupils presented her with a teaspoon as a parting / wedding gift, engraved 'Mae' on the handle.
Raised three children on the Lett farm just south of Sandwich, IL, until about 1915-1918 when the family moved to a farm on Base Line Road, west of Montgomery, IL, and then to a farm on Randall Road just north of Galena Street, Aurora, IL, into Aurora on Blackhawk Street.
Upon the death of her husband, Ward, in 1923, she began to teach after attending Wheaton College and NITC in DeKalb again, earning her Second Grade Teaching Certificate by August 1923, which brought better wages and she became eligible for a pension.
She spent 6 months in an Aurora hospital in 1936, healing from a fractured hip incurred one day while teaching. All hospital expenses were paid by the School District. The hip bothered her the rest of her life.
See her son's Life Notes for details on where she moved her family while going to school again. They were apart for about 2 years until she could pull them back together as she began teaching again.
She retired from teaching in 1947, having taught in the Aurora schools for that entire 25 years.

January 1, 1913
Rose at 4:45 AM. Father Montgomery, Ward, the children and I went to Maude’s on 8:25 train. All our people and Nate’s were there for dinner - 34 in all. It was a beautiful day - not very cold. Had a fine dinner and fine time. Ward, the children and I stayed all night. Mama brought me a pair of embroidered pillow slips - other gifts from Ella and family for all. Retired at 11:00 P.M.
January 2
Had late breakfast at Maude’s, then Nate drove us to Oswego to the train. Reached home about noon, Clare and family came for supper. Had popped corn and expected them in afternoon. Ward helped me with dishes after they went and we retired about
10:00 P.M.
January 3
Felt all tired out all day. Received letter from Edith and card from Mrs. Blackwelder. Wrote Mrs. MacFarland.
January 4
Did baking and cooking all morning. In afternoon swept and cleaned all the rooms. Father did the kitchen for me. Marilla had fever 101 degrees at bedtime. Ward dressed a chicken. We were all pretty tired when we got through. Had cold coming on - used alcohol all day.
Sunday, January 5
Was busy all day long. Marilla still had fever so we could not go to Jessie’s with uncle S and Aunt P. Snowed and sleeted some in P.M. Ward and father worked all day getting cobs under cover. Bathed Robert in A.M. and Marilla at bedtime. Had bad sore throat in evening - felt very sick.
Monday, January 6
My cold has been some better today. Marilla has felt more like herself. No fever all day. Has played with her dolls a great deal. Robert has been good as usual - such a dear happy boy. Ward took a big load of cobs to Aunt Delia today. Brought home a barrel of Belflower apples and a box of prunes among other things. Aunt Delia sent me two quarts of her own mince meat in the jar I sent her full of buttermilk. I ironed some this afternoon and washed out some diapers. Robert has dirtied several the last few days. Tonight since supper I have washed my dishes, made applesauce, set my bread, made hash for breakfast, put Manila to bed and saved some buttons on her dress and mine. I’m very tired and my throat is bad again tonight, Think I shall retire as it is toward ten o’clock. Father made me a new woodbox today.
Tuesday, January 7 and Wednesday, January 8
I had such a sick headache I couldn’t write last night (Tuesday). I baked bread and with Ward’s help in the afternoon canned 17 quarts of apples. They got jammed in the barrel coming home Monday. Ward churned - got about four pounds butter - while I got supper. Was too sick to eat so lay down while men ate.
Today we washed. Had a big washing and I did the flannels after three o’clock. It has been a most beautiful day. Jessie and children went to Aurora today to visit mother and Edith. Expected E. to call me up as she was due at Dr. Miller’s today but haven’t heard from her. Ward went to town this afternoon to take things to E. Sent 2 1/2 dozen eggs and about 7 or eight lbs. Butter besides other things. W. isn’t home yet. He got a late start.
Had letter from mother M. and also from Mrs. MacFarland today. Mrs. M. is to send us a girl very soon. I am so thankful and hope she wilt be good. If Ward doesn’t come soon I’m going to bed, for Robert likes to get up so early. My cold has been better today altho it is still bad enough.
Thursday, January 9
It has been cloudy with a cold south wind all day. This morning Ward helped me change beds around and clean the east room for the girl. He expected to go to Aurora on noon train but the clocks were slow so he didn’t get ready in time. F. called up from Dr. Millers. Ward went up town to go with her on four o’clock to Aurora. I don’t expect him back until tomorrow although he said he’d come on the midnight. But I told him to stay.
Had card from Maude today. Compton’s sore mouth is much better. She expects to come down soon. Have to fill the rack up with damp clothes and get Robert’s milk first. Have the children both in my bed so don’t expect to sleep very well.
Saturday, January 11
I was too tired to write again last night. Cleaned the pantry thoroly in the morning and worked all afternoon changing our clothes around and cleaning up generally. Had headache all afternoon. Ward came home on noon train. Had bought a new overcoat - very pretty and I’m so glad he has it. He scrubbed the kitchen floor for me after he had his lunch. Was quite moderate with south wind all day. Today it is colder - quite a north wind blowing tonight. Have felt used up with my cold all day. This morning I baked bread, beans, macaroni, and an apple cake besides my other work. We expect Mr. Kecham to butcher Monday so Ward cleaned up the cellar and washed the crocks this morning.
Father churned for me this afternoon and I did innumerable things. Bathed Robert and just now (9:00) have Marilla bathed and in bed. W. has gone to Sandwich. Expect him back soon. Have a chicken to dress so must go and do it, then bathe and go to bed.
Sunday, January 12
This has been a beautiful day, but rather cold - 3 degrees below zero this morning, Ernest told me. Robert seems to have more cold in his nose. Marilla has felt well all day. Father is sick with his cold. He will not put on a coat but just sits and shivers.
We had roast chicken for dinner, Was busy all forenoon. Mr. Macatee called this afternoon and he and Ward went up to Arthur Breuer’s a little while. Am so very tired tonight and my cold seems worse. Didn’t get to bed until 11:45 last night. Will wash my dishes and go to bed at once. Marilla stands here watching me. She is tired too.
Monday, January 13
It has been another nice day, tho cloudy part of the time - not so cold as yesterday. My cold seems no better - am hoarse and coughing again tonight. Mr. Kecham is here - they butchered four hogs today. He and Ward are down cellar, cutting up lard now for they want to get thru tomorrow.
Robert has quite a little cold in his head today. He is so very good and happy, tho. I bathed him and oiled him well at bedtime. Manila has felt ill all day. Was out doors a long time this afternoon.
Can scarcely keep my eyes open. Must get ready for bed.
Wednesday, January 15
If I am not careful I won’t keep this diary at all - I am so used up every night. Yesterday Ward and Mr. K. tried out the lard - 32 gallons. Mr. K. packed the meat 300 lbs. And made about 170 lbs. Sausage, They stuffed some of it last night and didn’t get thru until 12 o’clock. This morning I made some casings and they finished stuffing it. It surely looks fine.
Had letter from mother M. today. Sent her a card - also Mr. MacFarland a note. Ward went to Millington this afternoon and sent mother some money. I am going to sleep writing so am going to bed.
Thursday, January 16
A damp misty day. Is raining tonight and a little colder. Helped Marilla get a letter off to mother this morning. We sent mother a box by express today. Sausage, lard, ribs, tongue, tenderloin, liver, half a shoulder, bread, fruit and a few apples. Ward went to Sheridan with the box and took a bag of corn to the mill.
I took all the head, feet, and backbone meat from the bones this afternoon, Can make the scrapple and the pickled meat tomorrow. Robert’s cold seems a little worse - mine a trifle better, Must go now and give him onion syrup and his bottle. Then I’m going to bed, Mother called up this afternoon. Said J, wouldn’t go home until the morning train.
Saturday, January 18
I am afraid I’ll have to make a greater effort or I’ll never keep this diary up. I am so used up every night that it seems that I can’t write.
Yesterday Ward and I put in a busy day. We didn’t get up until a quarter to seven for Robert had been awake two hours in the night. We fried down the ribs, Have a gallon jar packed as tightly as possible. Made two kettles of scrapple and one of pickled meat. Didn’t have vinegar enough to finish the pickled meat, It isn’t as nice as it should be any way - meat is too fine and not enough jelly. Think perhaps we’ll make it into scrapple as it isn’t sour. Ward churned - got about four pounds butter. Rose came over in the afternoon. Had a real nice visit with her. Jessie came borne from Aurora - called up about 1 o’clock. Ward went to Sandwich after supper to see Mr. Faxon.
Today father helped me wash flannels and baby’s things. Ward took George to Millington to see the Dr. this forenoon, Dr. wasn’t there. They got Prince shod. George has been feeling miserable since Thursday A.M. Is feeling better tonight - ate some supper. This afternoon Ward cleaned the kitchen floor and mopped up other floors after I swept. He moved the kitchen stove around facing the east window Think (shall like it much better.
Ethel called up this morning and invited us up tomorrow, but we can’t go. Haven’t any rig and I have nothing to wear but my old black dress, Hope I get a girl soon so I can sew.
It’s after ten, I’ll wash, go to bed, Have bread set and Robert has his bottle.
Sunday, January 19
This is my sister Maude’s 29th birthday anniversary. I intended to write her but now it is so late - will have to wait until another day.
I rose about 5:20 this morning and bathed Robert as soon as I was dressed. Then got breakfast, etc. and just started to bathe Marilla when Ethel called up. Ward told her we would go so we hustled. Had to iron Robert’s things and wash and iron Maxilla’s gimple and drawers. Got the bread into the oven and took my bath. We started at about eleven, Had a real nice time but we were all very tired riding four in the single buggy. Have been working ever since we got home at (?):30. It’s ten o’clock now so am going to bed. Ethel gave me a pattern like Helen’s dress. We took them a liver and some sausage.
Monday, January 20
Of all the surprises I ever had I think today’s was the greatest. Ethel has a baby girl born at (?) A.M. today. Clare called me just before five but it was very hard to hear him. Yesterday I couldn’t quite make up my mind whether Ethel was in family way or not. She looked just stout. She was planning on attending Charlie’s wedding in about three weeks. Am afraid it was premature and am anxious about her but can’t get anyone tonight. Will call Aunt Phoebe in the morning. I hope she and baby are all right, poor girl.
It has snowed all day and blown quite hard. Tonight it is clear, still and getting very cold. Ward and George cleared out the open end of the shed today. Made a shelter for the horses. I scarcely know what I have done but have been busy as a bee all day. Did some ironing kite this afternoon and just now (8:30) finished. Am going to feed Robert now and go to bed.
Wednesday, January 22
Too tired to write again last night. Ethel’s little baby died. It was a premature birth.
Poor Ethel. I am so sorry for her as she has no mother. I must write her tomorrow. Aunt Phoebe said she is getting along all right.
We washed yesterday. It was a most beautiful day and the clothes dried fine. Ward helped me until 2:o’clock then went up the creek and got Iwo rabbits. After that he went up to Aunt Delia’s and brought Edith home. She brought me a tennis night gown and a white pique dress for Bobbie.
Mrs. Sweetland called up in afternoon. Inquired about everyone. Won’t be back until April.
Mrs. MacFarland called up and said my girl won’t be here until tomorrow morning. Today I baked bread and Ward churned. Had card from Maude. Edith and Marilla went to Jessie’s tonight and go to Aurora tomorrow afternoon. Sent a loaf of bread and the butter to Mother.
Friday, January 24
My girl, Sylvia Reynolds, came yesterday. Father took Ward to the Roger’s sale and went on to the train. They got here soon after twelve. I had a headache all day. Robert bit the end off his old nipple and had quite a crying time before he would take a new one.
Ward rode home with Frank. He bought a brood mare for $23, a milk wagon and various other things. I wrote Mama last night. Sent her the recipe for curing the meat.
Sylvia is going to be a good girl, I think, She is not as very capable but is very willing and wants to do things right. That is a great deal. She is stout and has red hair. Is neat and clean. Will do very well, I think.
Ward and I looked over most of the papers in the desk last night. Had stayed up until eleven the night before planning the kitchen cabinet he is going to make me out of the desk. This morning Ward [and] George went up to Roger’s for the things he bought yesterday. Sylvia cleaned the kitchen floor and I cleaned one of the cupboards and finished the ironing. Made a pie for dinner.
This afternoon Ward worked on the cabinet and got a big start. It’s almost nine o’clock and he will scarcely stop now. I never saw such a boy.
I made five more pans [of] scrapple this afternoon and dressed three chickens, two of them for mother. We are going to send her a box in the morning. Must help pack It and go to bed, Jessie thinks maybe they will come up Sunday. I hope so.
Monday, January 27
It was so late when I got thru Sat, night that I didn’t write and last night I was at Jessie’s. Saturday Sylvia cleaned and I did the baking - bread, brown bread, cake and snow pudding. Cooked a chicken for dinner and baked beans for supper. Jessie thought they couldn’t come up so I told her we would go down.
Sunday morning we went down about 10:30. Took us two hrs. Had a fine visit. Adelle came in afternoon and stayed to supper. Came home this afternoon. Brought Jessie’s blue surge dress and some of Stanley’s dresses for Robert. Jessie has enough of Mary’s dresses that I don’t need to make any long ones. It is such a big help. I’ll help her make some for Mary instead,
Ernest went to Streator and expected to go on to Bloomington today.
Ward went to Johnson’s sale today. Bought a hay loader and a corn boiler. He and father had the cabinet all finished and in place and the cupboard moved when I came home. They haul the hogs in the morning and we are going to wash so must go to bed.
Tuesday, January 28
I have put in an extremely busy day. We had a big washing and Sylvia can’t manage herself two minutes. I made a pie and apple sauce this forenoon. Did all the dishes and helped a lot with the washing. This afternoon did same. Made a brown bread and cooked lima beans for supper. They were fine. Sent Marilla a card this morning. Will be so glad to have her come home, tho I know she is having a fine time.
Ward went to Urv Harvey’s sale when he came back from hauling hogs. He bought a harness for the ponies. It looks fine, Paid only $2.00 for it. Went to Sandwich this afternoon. Isn’t home yet, but hope he will come soon for I have his supper on the stove.Sylvia has gone to bed without setting bread so I must go and do it. It’s colder tonight and clear. Will be pretty cold by morning.
Wednesday, January 29
Ward went to Herbert Rohrer’s sale today and bought 13 brood sows. From there he went to Sandwich. Didn’t get home until supper time. Sylvia and I cleaned the kitchen cupboards and I got the cabinet in order. It was a big job and I’ve had a headache all afternoon. Gave Robert a goo bath before I put him to bed, He is so sweet and good. Guess he misses Marilla. Jessie had letter from mother today, They are sewing for Marilla. Am glad she is happy and enjoying herself. Must go to bed [indecipherable] nearly 8 o’clock, but my head aches.
Friday, January 31
I forgot to write last night. Made Robert some oatmeal gruel and then staid in the kitchen and read until bedtime so forgot to write. We ironed yesterday and I canned two quarts apples and did various other things. Ward went to Somonauk to see Mr. Wright. Got home just at supper time. We ironed again today. Sylvia finished this afternoon. I made Robert two pads. Bless his dear little hear. He needed them badly. He has been so very good all day. He is such a little blessing. So full of fun and happy all the time. Ernest got home from Bloomington today. Jessie thinks they won’t be up Sunday. It has turned very cold. Must be zero or below and a high wind blowing. Ward and George put the harness on the ponies this forenoon and this afternoon Ward drove them to Millington and had them shod. George goes tomorrow. I hope we won't be sorry to have made the change. Paid Sylvia her weekly allowance 10 cents today.
Saturday, February 1
It is 8:20 and I am going to bed soon. Robert was awake before 4:30 this morning and we rose about 5:30. Have baked bread and cookies, made butter and dressed a chicken besides sweeping and cleaning floors all over downstairs and cleaning the pantry. Will do the dusting in the morning while Sylvia does her kitchen work.
Ward took George to the noon train today. Said he was going to Aurora and then perhaps to Battle Creek. Ward brought the zinc for my cabinets, also a mop pail among other things. Stopped at Aunt Delia’s a moment. She offered to make my bedding for me. Invitations to Lillian and Charlie’s wedding come today. Scarcely think we shall go. No other mail except papers.
Tuesday, February 4
Here I am way behind with my diary again. Sunday night I was all in. Worked all day dusting, hanging pictures and cleaning up here in the library. Hope we are settled now for a little while. Ward and Father worked all day on the new wagon box. Yesterday we washed and Sylvia scrubbed. Had a hard day’s work. Ward put the zinc in the cabinet. It is just grand. I wrote to Mother. W. had letter from her and I one from Jessie. E. is going to get voile for me to make up over my old brown silk for the wedding. I started to rip it out last night.
Today Sylvia did the ironing. I baked a cake and some cookies and various other things. Ripped my waist all up this afternoon and made a mush. Have started to rip the skirt. Ward and Father have the wagon box nearly done. Had card from Maude. She is at Mama’s. W. had bill from Dr. Montgomery.
E. called up this morning. She goes to J. in the morning and Marilla comes to Millington. We will be so glad to see her. Almost fainted while talking to J. right after talking with E. Guess my condition is telling on me but I’ve been so thankful to have been so well this far.
This was the last entry.
Notes: Marriage
The MInister at the wedding, who signed their wedding certificate, was John Ford Leffler, husband of Lena Compton Leffler, sister of Ida Compton Fitzgerald, Grandmother of May Belle Fitzgerald Montgomery.
General Notes: Child - James Robert Montgomery
Born December 13, 1911, at the family home, on the Lett Family Homestead, south of Sandwich, Illinois.
Family:
Father, Ward Pease Montgomery.
Mother, May Belle Fitzgerald Montgomery.
Sister, Marilla May, age 3.
His next sister, Mary Louise, would arrive two years later, 1913.
1911-1915 - Raised on the Lett Homestead farm, south of Sandwich, IL.
1915-1917 - Family left the Lett Homestead Farm, moving to a farm on Base Line Road, west of Montgomery, IL. He attended school with his older sister Marilla, the "Keck" School, as it was called, on (Orchard Road) the road south of Base Line Road, west of Montgomery, IL, next to the "Keck" Cemetery (now named the Joseph G. Keck Memorial Cemetery - 1843). He would come home from school and teach his younger sister, Mary Louise, to read. Younger sister Mary Louise also briefly attended this school.
1917-1918 - The family moved to another farm on Randall Road, just north of Galena Street in Aurora, where today there are only pine trees amid "newer subdivisions" to suggest the location. His father's WWI Draft Card of September 12, 1918, attests to the address. Attended the nearby rural "Randall School", the "Little Red Schoolhouse" on Galena Street just west of Randall Road, with his big sister, Marilla. (See the caption written on the back of a photo taken of their Randall School Class field trip, taken at the Island Shelter House in front of Mill Race Inn, on the Fox River at Geneva, IL.) His younger sister Mary Lou remembers the family's pet hens, their Collie, "Flossie", and Shetland pony, "Bud". Bob used to ride "Bud" bareback. One time his dad hitched Bud to a little cart and drove Bob and his sister, Mary Lou, to the little red schoolhouse. The last year they lived there (1921-1922), his Dad would drive his sister, Marilla, to her Freshman year at West Aurora High School. Marilla would graduate in 1925.
1922 - Moved with his family from the Randall Road farm to live on Blackhawk Street near Greenman School, west side of Aurora, IL. His father, Ward, started to sell real estate while taking commercial art correspondence classes and doing some surveying.
1923, July 2 - While the family lived on Blackhawk Street in Aurora, his father, Ward Pease Montgomery, died of a ruptured duodenum in Aurora, Illinois, after only a week in hospital. Ward had apparently begun ulcer problems while living on the farm(s).
1923 - 1924 - Lived with his Mother and sister Mary Louise and his Uncle Harold (Harold was only about 13 years older than Bob) at the farm of maternal grandparents, James and Ida (Compton) Fitzgerald, north of Wheaton, Illinois. Went to grammar school there. Sister Marilla stayed in Aurora, attended West Aurora high school through graduation.
1924 - Moved from Grandparent Fitzgerald's farm north of Wheaton back to Aurora. Reunited as a family unit, with Mother and 2 sisters, after sister Marilla's West Aurora High School Graduation in 1925. He attended Young School on Fifth Street, at the same time as his younger sister, Mary Louise.
1924 - 1925 - First job: paper route route for Aurora Beacon News.
1925 - 1929 - Attended East Aurora High School, Aurora, IL. Interested in music, art, illustration, as was his father. In an autobiography at age 14, he expressed a desire to one day become a commercial artist, as his father desired at the end of his life. He played drums in the school orchestra, but apparently the school band only his freshman year. His artwork is displayed on the pages of his high school yearbook. In the yearbook, next to his senior class photo is written, "Bob spends so much time helping others that he never has time to do any work". His high school achievements are listed: Student Council Rep. 1-4; French Club 3, 4, Treas. 3; Boys' Glee Club 3,4, Vice-Pres. 3, Sec. 4; Orchestra 2, 3, 4; Band 1; Auroran Staff 3,4 (school newspaper?); Patron Staff; Class Motto Committee. He designed scenery for three various stage productions during his senior year.
1926 - 1928 - Purchased first second-hand snare drum with $5.00 from paper route. Became a Boy Scout (picture taken n uniform at 303 ???? Street house address.)
1928 - 1929 - Worked after school and Saturdays at Fisher's Bakery in Aurora for 25 cents per hour during last year of High School.
1929, June - Graduated East Aurora High School, East Aurora, IL.
1929 - Began playing dance jobs using his expanded drum set, added to during high school with money from the Bakery job.
1929, October - Stock Market Crash.
1931 - August - Living with family in an up/down duplex on Evans Avenue. Contracted polio of the lower extremeties following a long hot day, having had a headache all day and playing a band job. Doctored daily by a Doctor Lindbergh, Osteopath, and his family with the aid of fluids, fruit and many massages. Recovered from polio enough to be able to walk independently and play drums - but never to run again. Took drum lessons in Chicago for a brief time after the polio - paid for by his Mother.
1932, October 22 - Bob's Band, "The Fidgety Five", a novelty band, won first place in the district finals of the WLS Radio / Paramount Radio contest at the Paramount Theater in Aurora, IL, winning $75 and an opportunity to perform before a live audience on the air on November 20, 1932, at the WLS Radio Studios in Chicago, IL. Playing in the band were: Don Wiley, bass; Russ Lindgren, guitar; Jack Pfeffers, trumpet; Clyde Rogers, sax, Bob Montgomery, drums. (Although press releases and news clippings about the performance of "The Fidgety Five" reported that the group had performed at WLS on November 20, 1932, upon being asked by son William as to whether there may have been any recordings of the performance, Bob replied that the performance really never took place. One of the group's members (second from right in photo?) who did the arrangements for the band did not "come through", as Bob put it. When it came to the time of the performance that member developed stage fright, or something similar defining that member's unwillingness to perform.) The news clippings attest only to what coulda, woulda, shoulda happened on November 20, 1932. NOTE: One of the WLS judges eventually purchased radio station WLBK, in DeKalb, IL.
1932, November - Grandpa Fitzgerald died, Grandma Ida Compton Fitzgerald came to live with the family.
1932 - 1933 - "Bob Montgomery and His Band" - played at small clubs in and around the Fox River Valley, ala Geneva and Aurora, IL. Places like the Prima Gardens, the Fox Valley Gardens and a nice club on the east side of Geneva.
1933 - With the expanded family, including Grandma Fitzgerald, moved to 440 Weston Avenue in Aurora, a four-bedroom house near Copley Hospital.
Before this move (1924-1933), the family had lived in houses / apartments / duplexes on:
Grant Place, "near the coffee house"
South Avenue, two times; once in 1924 after living on the farm with his Grandfather and Grandmother Fitzgerald and Uncle Harold, and once by themselves, May, Marilla, Bob and Mary Lou in 1929 or 1930
Evans Avenue (when he contracted polio)
Root Street and Benton Street near the high school - all on the east side of Aurora
1933 - Played drums in a small band (his band?) at a club north of Aurora - The Paramount, in Geneva. At home in Aurora, took on a roommate, a fellow band member, named Harold O'Brien.
1934 - 11 June - Harold "Obie" O'Brien marries his sister, Mary Lou, in Denver, CO.
1934 - 35 - Traveled with Artie Collins' Band to, among other places; Detroit, Chicago, Nashville, Cleveland, Akron, Syracuse, Buffalo, Columbus, Youngstown, Louisville. In a letter to his Mother in late summer, 1935, he writes from The Garfield Hotel in Cleveland of having nothing to do while waiting to leave for "a one-nighter in Bascom, OH, then to Youngstown for 2 weeks at $20 a week - a "living wage", and then to the "Roosevelt in Pittsburgh, the Van Cleve in Dayton, the Gibson in Cincinnati or the Carter in Cleveland." The bookings didn't sound reliable to him - confusion was blamed on the bookings office, as per Collins. His money was shrinking, too.
1935 - November - Had left playing with Artie Collins' Band to play with Harold Menning's Orchestra and was living in Appleton, Wisconsin. Bob talked to Menning about hiring Obie and in mid-January 1936, Obie and Bob's sister, Mary Lou, "joined" the band. Appleton was headquarters for the band and they played in surrounding towns, traveling in a bus. Returned home in time for his sister Marilla's wedding at Thanksgiving-time and gave away the bride.
1935 - 1936 - Played drums in the Harold Menning Orchestra. Traveled by bus to surrounding towns. Maybe got in the band by knowing someone in the band, as it was when he got his brother-in-law, Obie into the band. Owned a 78 rpm disc, dated as recorded in 1928 and recorded in Port Washington / Grafton, WI, of the Harold Menning Band's performance of "My Suppressed Desire".
1936 - January-July - Brother-in-law Obie also played with the Menning Band and then moved back to Illinois. Lived with Bob Tuckis and another man in Appleton and slept on an open sleeping porch. Obie and Lou came up to town. They lived with their son "Jackie" in an apartment in a private residence in Appleton. He returned to Aurora after the band had apparently broken up.
1939 - 1941 - Working at a men's clothing store in Aurora. Met the famous actor, Buster Crabbe, of "Flash Gordon" movies fame, sold him some shoes, while working in Aurora.
August 28, 1940 - Recorded on a Silvertone Label disc; "Exactly Like You" and "Medley: Whispering / On The Alamo / More Than You Know," with vocals by Bob in the Medley. Band recorded with: unknown.
1941 - 1942 - Invited to DeKalb by a man named Dee Palmer, who needed a good drummer for big band and "combo" gigs. Bob was recommended to Dee by Bob's brother-in-law, Obie. Bob's response to Dee was that he didn't have a set of drums anymore. Dee replied that would not be a problem because he had a music store. It's quite possible Dee helped Bob get a job at Montgomery Wards. (As of 2009, Dee Palmer, at the age of 95, continues to conduct the DeKalb Municipal Band at weekly concerts in Hopkins Park in DeKalb. The DeKalb Municipal Band is the oldest continuous Municipal Band in Illinois, over 150 years, and, quite possibly, in the United States.)
1941 - De Kalb, IL - Would eat his evening meal at "Punk's Cabin", a tavern and eating establishment in downtown De Kalb. An evening meal at "The Cabin" cost $ .75 in 1941. General Notes: Child - Mary Louise Montgomery
Excerpts from "It All Started", an autobiography by Mary Lou Montgomery O'Brien, Obie's wife;
"My mother was May Belle Fitzgerald and my father was Ward Pease Montgomery. I am the youngest of three children. My sister, Marilla, was born February 17, 1907, and my brother, James Robert "Bob" was born December 13, 1911.
May Montgomery's parents were James and Ida (Compton) Fitzgerald. May had an older brother, Clifford, a younger sister, Maude, and two younger brothers, Norris and Harold.
May was born September 4, 1881. Ward Montgomery's parents were J. Ivor and Mary (Lett) Montgomery. Ward had an older sister, Jessie, a brother, Florian, and a sister, Edith. Ward was born October 24, 1879.
Marilla, Bob and I all attended a one-room country school. Bob started first grade three months before his sixth birthday and shortly after my fourth birthday. He loved it and would come home and play school with me every day. I started school when I was six and the teacher put me in second grade after the first week, since I'd had such good tutoring!
When I was nine I had a birthday party. The one gift I remember receiving was a box of candy - the first Whitman's Sampler I ever saw. Many things happened in the year that followed - some good and some bad. The first was leaving the farm and our pet hens, and our Collie, "Flossie", and our Shetland pony, "Bud". We used to ride him bareback and I remember one time our dad hitched Bud to a little cart and Bob and I drove him to our little red schoolhouse. So, we moved into Aurora and we went to city schools and we had electric lights! Then, I went to the hospital with a ruptured appendix and stayed there three weeks! But, worst of all was when my father was hospitalized with a ruptured duodenum and the doctor was unable to save his life. On July 2, 1923 he died at the age of 43. On the 18th I became ten years old. Bob was 11 and Marilla was 16 and in high school.
So our mother, May, was left with three children to raise and support. Since Marilla had two years of high school left, it was decided that she would live in Aurora with our paternal grandparents, Mary and Ivor Montgomery. Mother, Bob and I went to our maternal grandparents, Jim and Ida Fitzgerald, who, with Uncle Harold, lived on a farm north of Wheaton, Illinois. May had taught school before she was married and she found a job at a country school quite a distance from Wheaton. This meant we got to see her only on weekends. The next year we all moved to Aurora and May taught in the East Aurora schools. In 1925 Marilla graduated from West High. She got a job and the family was reunited and had our own apartment. Bob's first job was as a paperboy and he spent five dollars of his earnings on a second-hand snare drum. Then, during his last year at East High, he worked after school and Saturdays at Fisher's Bakery at 25 cents an hour. Bob added to his drum set and was soon playing dance jobs. When he graduated in 1929, I took over his job at the bakery. I graduated in 1930 and continued to work for Fisher's, part-time.
In 1931 we were living in a duplex on Evans Ave. and Mother took some summer classes at NITC in DeKalb in order to get more credits for her teacher's certificate. Of course we had no car and she had to depend upon public transportation. So, she was home on weekends only. One hot Friday night in August, Bob had played a job after having a headache all day. When he got home he had a backache, too, and couldn't get to sleep. He asked me to rub his back, which I did. I returned to my room and went to sleep. Soon, he was in my room, wanting me to rub his back again. I think he finally fell asleep in my bed. The next morning he was paralyzed and couldn't get out of bed. I don't know where Marilla was, but when Mother got home, that was what confronted her. She called Dr. Lindbergh, whom we knew from the Presbyterian Church. He was an osteopath and he came just about every day and massaged and massaged. He said it was polio and recommended lots of fluids, fruit and juices, which I took up to Bob. I used to help him out of bed, to the bathroom, back to bed, turn him over. I still worked at the bakery from 4:00 to 6:00 and Saturdays, so he wasn't left alone very much. When he got so he could go downstairs, he would sit at the top and go down a step at a time, sitting down. Then he used crutches and gradually got so he could do things and play the drums again. After this "recovery" he was still never able to run.
Fisher's opened a second store in 1932 and I was there by myself every day! Mrs. Fisher brought the day's supply of baked goods and the money and helped me open the store. She came back at noon while I went home for lunch and returned to help me close up at 6:00. It was the beginning of the Great Depression and by 1933 it was obvious that the second store would have to close. As a result, I was out of work. Grandpa Fitzgerald had died in November 1932, so Grandma came to live with us. We moved to a four-bedroom house at 440 Weston in 1933 and that's when IT ALL STARTED.
Bob was playing drums in a small band at a club north of Aurora and they needed a trumpet player. Obie was "between jobs" and joined the band, rooming with Bob. It wasn't long before Obie and I knew we were attracted to each other. He would wash the dishes (Bless his mother!) and I would dry them. So, we always said that love blossomed over the dishpan. Obie didn't have a car at that time, so when we had our first date in October we went to a movie by taxi.
We got engaged on Christmas Eve then, early in January, he left to join Jimmy Garrigan's band in Dallas, Texas. Next they played in Galveston and then up to Minneapolis. While there, Obie came down to Chicago. Marilla and I met him and he bought my engagement ring. Then Marilla and I went shopping for my white organdy wedding dress.
Obie rejoined the band, which went on to Denver. Jimmy was paying $40 a week plus hotel room, which was good, for Depression wages. During all of this time we were writing to each other just about every day. In fact I have a large box filled with our love letters. Phone calls were being made, too, because we were making plans for our wedding! In May, Mother and Marilla had given a Sunday afternoon Tea to announce our engagement. I had four bridal showers. Three cousins - Dorothy and Margaret Montgomery, and Mary Bernard, gave one of them. At noon, Sunday, June 10, friends and family were at the depot in Aurora as I boarded the train for Denver, Colorado. Obie had sent me a hand-trunk, which went in the baggage car. I carried a suitcase (shower gift) and my wedding cake (a gift from Fisher's Bakery) and a box holding my wedding dress. I was so nervous. Chicago was the farthest I'd ever been from home. And, besides, I wasn't sure I was doing the right thing. But, I got lucky.
Bill Smith and Pat Patelski, graduates from East High in 1928, were on the train. They were going to Seattle, Washington and had a few hours' layover in Denver. So, they took me under their wing. There were no eating facilities on the train, so when we got to Omaha, Nebraska, everyone went in the station to eat. The next morning, the train stopped in McCook, Nebraska. We all walked up a little hill to have breakfast at a diner. We arrived in Denver at noon and Obie was really surprised to see me get off the train with those two fellows, but he invited them to the wedding. And they came!
He took me to his place at the Winbro Apartments, then went to the apartment of the best man and his wife, Bob and Lucille Hill. On my wedding day, I couldn't find a washcloth, so I took my bath with a dishrag. I got dressed and we went to the Methodist Church for the four o'clock ceremony. "Skip" Letford, pianist with the orchestra, played the wedding march as Obie and I, wearing a gardenia corsage, went down the aisle together. Band members and wives attended and came to our apartment afterward for wedding cake and punch (generously "spiked" by several of the guys). The band had to play that night, but I spent part of the time napping in the car, making up for sleep lost on the train. Bands in those days often did "remote" radio broadcasts. That night Jimmy Garrigan's orchestra dedicated "I'll String Along With You" to the new Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien who were married that afternoon, June 11, 1934."
