Elizabeth de Clare
(16 September 1295 -4 November 1360) was the heiress to the lordships of Clare, Suffolk in England and Usk in Wales. She was one of three daughters of Gilbert de Clare, 6th Earl of Hertford and Joan of Acre, and sister of the infant fourth earl, also Gilbert de Clare. She is commonly referred to as Elizabeth de Burgh, due to her first marriage.
First marriage
She accompanied her brother Gilbert to Ireland for their double wedding to two siblings: the son and daughter of the Earl of Ulster. Elizabeth married John de Burgh on 30 September 1308.
He was the heir to the Earl of Ulster, and Elizabeth could expect to be a countess. She gave birth to their only child, a son, in 1312; he would become William Donn de Burgh, 3rd Earl of Ulster. Only a year later, her husband John was suddenly killed in a minor skirmish. Now a widow, Elizabeth remained in Ireland until another family tragedy demanded her return.
Inheritance
Her brother Gilbert was killed at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 aged only 23 and, as he left no surviving issue and had no brothers, his property was equally divided between his three full sisters, Elizabeth, Eleanor and Margaret. Suddenly Elizabeth was one of the greatest heiresses in England. Her uncle, King Edward II, recalled her to the land of her birth so he could select a husband for her. She left Ireland in 1316, leaving behind her young son, William. Elizabeth never returned.
Second marriage
Edward II placed her in Bristol Castle, but his plans to marry her to one of his supporters were dashed in February 1316, when Elizabeth was abducted from Bristol by Theobald II de Verdun, the former Justiciar of Ireland. He and Elizabeth had been engaged before she was called back to England. She was Lady Verdun for only six months however, for Theobald died on 27 July 1316, at Alton, Staffordshire, of typhoid. He left behind three daughters from a prior marriage and Elizabeth, who was pregnant. She fled to Amesbury Priory, where she stayed under the protection of her aunt Mary de Burgh, who was a nun there, and where Theobald's posthumous daughter, Isabel de Verdun, named after the Queen, was born on 21 March 1317[1].
Third Marriage
Just a few weeks later after Isabel's birth, Edward II married Elizabeth to Sir Roger D'Amory, Lord D'Amory, Baron of Armoy in Ireland.
D'Amory had been a knight in her brother's service who rose to prominence as a favourite of Edward II. Now married to him, Elizabeth was caught up in the political upheavals of her uncle's reign. She gave birth to another daughter, Elizabeth, in May 1318. Roger was reckless and violent, and made a deadly enemy of his brother-in-law, Hugh the younger Despenser. D'Amory switched sides over to Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, and died in March 1322, having been captured by royalist forces. Elizabeth was taken and imprisoned at Barking Abbey with her children by the victorious faction.
Loss and regain of property
At this time she became the victim of an elaborate plot by Hugh Despenser the younger with the help of King Edward II. It provides a good example of the abuse of power which eventually led to their downfall.[2] Despenser had received Gower from the king, who had taken it from its previous holder, William de Braose. Elizabeth was forced to exchange Usk for Gower, which was less valuable. De Braose then undertook legal proceedings against her for possession of Gower, which were successful under pressure from the king. Finally, de Braose gave Gower to the Despensers.[3]
Elizabeth supported her friend Queen Isabella when she invaded England, and she benefited greatly from the reign of Isabella's son, King Edward III of England. In January 1327, after the fall of the Despensers, the lands they had taken were returned to her.[4]
Later life
She took a vow of chastity after Roger's death, effectively removing herself from the aristocratic marriage market. She enjoyed a long and fruitful widowhood, becoming patroness of many religious houses. Elizabeth is best remembered for having used much of her fortune to found Clare College, Cambridge. The survival of many of her household records has been a boon to medieval scholars, particularly those focusing on medieval women; a study of Elizabeth by Frances Underhill, For Her Good Estate: The Life of Elizabeth de Burgh, is largely based upon these records.
Her daughter, Elizabeth d'Amory, married John Bardolf, 3rd Lord Bardolf of Wormegay, Knight Banneret (1314-1363).

Isabel de Verdun Lady Ferrers of Groby
(21 March 1317- 25 July 1349), was an English heiress, and the eldest daughter of Elizabeth de Clare, and through her, the great-granddaughter of King Edward I of England. She was the wife of Henry de Ferrers, 2nd Lord Ferrers of Groby.[1]
Family and lineage
Isabel was born at Amesbury Priory, Wiltshire, on 21 March 1317, the only child of the marriage of Theobald de Verdun, 2nd Lord Verdun, Justiciar of Ireland (born 8 September 1278) and Lady Elizabeth de Clare (16 September 1295- 4 November 1360). She was born eight months after the death of her father, which occurred on 27 July 1316, of typhoid. He had abducted her mother from Bristol Castle in early 1316, and married her shortly afterwards on 4 February. Elizabeth was his second wife, his first wife having been Maud Mortimer (c.1289- 18 September 1312). Isabel had three half-sisters from her father's prior marriage, Joan de Verdun, Elizabeth de Verdun, and Margery de Verdun.
Isabel, along with her three de Verdon half-sisters, was a co-heiress of her father. She is occasionally referred to as Heiress of Ludlow.
Theobald was Elizabeth's second husband, her first husband John de Burgh had died in a minor skirmish in Galway, Ireland on 18 June 1313. She had a son by de Burgh, William Donn de Burgh, 3rd Earl of Ulster (17 September 1312- 6 June 1333), who was Isabel's uterine half-brother. William would later marry Maud of Lancaster, by whom he had a daughter Elizabeth de Burgh, suo jure 4th Countess of Ulster (6 July 1332- 10 December 1363). Following the death of her brother Gilbert at Bannockburn in 1314, Elizabeth, along with her two sisters, Margaret and Eleanor, became one of the greatest heiresses in England. Her uncle, King Edward II of England, ordered her to return to England, where he planned to select a husband for her from among his supporters. She was placed in Bristol Castle where Verdun would afterwards abduct her, to the fury of King Edward.
After her husband's death, Elizabeth, pregnant with Verdun's child, fled to Amesbury Priory and placed herself under the protection of her aunt, Mary de Burgh, who was one of the nuns. It was there that she gave birth to Isabel.
Isabel's birth is recorded in an entry of King Edward II's Wardrobe Accounts, as well as the King's gift of a silver-gilt cup which valued at one pound, ten shillings.
Her paternal grandparents were Theobald de Verdun, 1st Lord Verdun and Margery de Bohun, and her maternal grandparents were Gilbert de Clare, 6th Earl of Hertford, 3rd Earl of Gloucester, and Joan of Acre, the daughter of King Edward I of England and Eleanor of Castile.
On 3 May 1317, when Isabel was just about six weeks old, her mother married Sir Roger D'Amory, Lord D'Amory, Baron of Armoy (c.1290- 14 March 1322) a favourite of King Edward II, who encouraged the match. Isabel's wardship and marriage rights were awarded to her stepfather. From her mother's marriage to D'Amory, Isabel had a uterine half-sister, Elizabeth D'Amory, (born shortly before 23 May 1318- 5 February 1361), who would later marry Sir John Bardolf, by whom she had issue. Following D'Amory's participation in Lancaster's rebellion of 1322, against his former friend and patron, the King and the latter's new favourites, the Despensers, the wardship and marriage rights were forfeit to the Crown and eventually passed to Queen Isabella. Roger D'Amory died on 14 March 1322, two days before the Battle of Boroughbridge where the rebels were defeated by the Royal forces. Isabel, not quite five years old, together with her sister Elizabeth and her mother, was imprisoned at Barking Abbey.
Marriage and issue
Isabel married Henry de Ferrers, 2nd Lord Ferrers of Groby (born before 1303- 15 September 1343) in 1328 at Newbold Verdon, Leicestershire. He was the son of William de Ferrers, 1st Lord Ferrers of Groby and Ellen de Seagrove. She was eleven years old at the time of her marriage. The marriage produced at least five children, four of whom survived infancy:
· Infant, whose name and sex is not known, died shortly after birth.
· William de Ferrers, 3rd Lord Ferrers of Groby (28 February 1333 Newbold Verdon- 8 January 1371), married Margaret de Ufford, daughter of Robert d'Ufford, 1st Earl of Suffolk and Margaret de Norwich, by whom he had issue, including Henry de Ferrers, 4th Lord Ferrers of Groby, who married Joan de Hoo, and Margaret de Ferrers, who married Thomas de Beauchamp, 12th Earl of Warwick.
· Ralph de Ferrers, married Joan de Grey of Codnor.
· Elizabeth de Ferrers (died 22 October 1375), married firstly David de Strathbogie, 12th Earl of Atholl, by whom she had issue. She married secondly, John Malewayn.[2]
· Philippa de Ferrers (died 10 August 1384), married Guy de Beauchamp, son of Thomas de Beauchamp, 11th Earl of Warwick and Katherine Mortimer, by whom she had two daughters.
Death
Isabel died on 25 July 1349 of the plague. Her husband had died on 15 September 1343 and was buried in Ulvescroft Priory.
Isabel de Verdun is an ancestress of American president George W. Bush.

General Notes: Husband - Walter Fitzrobert De Clare
Walter FitzRobert, 2nd Lord of Dunmow Castle, who in the controversy between the Earl of Moreton, brother of Richard I, and the Bishop of Ely, Walter adhered to the Bishop, and was given custody of the Castle of Eye in Suffolk. He married 1st Maud, died 1140, daughter of Richard Lucie, and with her had the lordship of Disce in Norfolk. Married 2nd Margaret de Bohun and dying in 1198 was succeeded by his eldest son, Robert.
General Notes: Child - Robert Fitzwalter
Robert FitzWalter, Surety, 3rd Lord of Dunmow Castle, upon the scutage assessment of Scotland, in the 13th of King John, 1212, had the king's special writ of acquittal for 63 1/2 knight's fees, which were of his own proper inheritance, and a 3rd part which he had acquired by marriage. But the next year, on account of conspiracies with the barons against King John to keep his promises in the matter of proposed statutes, he was forced to flee with his family into France in order to avoid being arrested upon the first disposition of the barons to revolt.
He was charged soon with treason and rebellion and his house in London, called Baynard's Castle, was demolished by order of King John. "The primary occasion for these discontents," says Dugdale (Sir Wm. Dugdale, 1605-1686, noted English antiquary, who published History of Warwickshire and History of English Peerage, and was Norrey King-at-arms), "is by some thus reported, viz., that this Robert FitzWalter, having a very beautiful daughter, called Maud, residing at Dunmow Castle, and King John frequently solicited her chastity, but never prevailing, grew so enraged that he caused her to be privately poisoned. She was buried at the south side of the quire at Dunmow between two pillars there."
Tradition has thus assigned this disgraceful act on the part of King John as the principal cause of his enmity for Robert FitzWalter, which was no less than an attempt to obtain Maud for one of his concubines. But whether this is the truth or not, FitzWalter's opposition seemed to be dominated by the desire for the Magna Charta, and his feelings and conduct were engulfed in the agitated sea of history which opened at this period. To endeavor to win him over to his side King John pretended to admire FitzWalter's skill, prowess and valour at a tournament, which took place in Normandy, in France, and making this an excuse, restored to him the whole of his forfeited estates and permitted him to repair his Castle of Baynard in London and other fortresses and constituted him Governor of Hertford Castle in 1214-15. But FitzWalter's heart was still in the cause of the barons and he was soon in open opposition to the king, while his high rank, tried courage and acknowledged abilities soon gave him a lead amongst his compeers.
We find him, therefore, among the first commissioners nominated to treat with the king when it was agreed that the City of London should be delivered up to the barons and twenty-five of those powerful chiefs should be chosen to govern the realm. The insurrectionary lords subsequently assembled at St. Edmondsbury, and there pledged themselves by solemn oath at the high altar that if the king refused to confirm the laws and liberties granted by Edward the Confessor they would withdraw their allegiance from him and seize upon his fortresses. After which, forming themselves into a regular army, they appointed FitzWalter leader of the barons and General of their army, under the title of "Marshal of the Army of God and the Holy Church," and, under his command, they eventually extorted the "Great Charters of Freedom" from King John on the plains of Runnemede, when FitzWalter was elected one of the celebrated twenty-five appointed to see to the faithful observance of those laws.
After the granting of the Magna Charta, when King John endeavored to elude his promises, FitzWalter was one of the committee of the baronial party, which went to France to invite the Dauphin to accept the throne of England, and on this Prince's coming he, with William de Mandeville and William de Huntingfield, both Sureties, reduced the Counties of Essex and Suffolk to the authority of the Dauphin. Upon the accession of Henry III, after the Battle of Lincoln, and the Royal Army was victorious, FitzWalter was made a prisoner with the majority of the barons. And then finding the Dauphin, whom they had attempted to put on the throne. a useless political factor, they dropped him and returned to their allegiance and engaged a ship and took the Dauphin back to France. In 1218 FitzWalter was allowed to assume the cross and join a crusade. When he took part in the siege of Damietta he returned and died a peaceful death in 1234 and was buried before the high altar of Dunmow Priory. Notwithstanding his enmity to Kings John and Henry III, and the frequent confiscations of his property, FitzWalter died possessed of an extensive estate.
He married 1st Gunora, daughter and heiress of Robert, 2nd Lord of Valoines, by his wife Roesia, daughter of William, 5th feudal Baron of Blount, 2nd Rose or Roese. By 1st wife he had Walter, his successor, Maud, or Matilda, and Christian. Maud, who was poisoned by King John, through her persecution and romantic death, has been the subject of many plays, poems and popular tales, her name appearing under that of "Matilda, the Fair," "Malkin or Maid Marion," "the Queen of the Mays," "Sherwood Forest, Mistress of Robin Hood," or "Robert, Earl of Huntingdon." (Cokayne's Complete Peerage, Vol 6, p. 650, says that Robin Hood, otherwise Robin Fitzoath, the famous forest outlaw, popularly ennobled in legend as Earl of Huntingdon, never possessed that Earldom, or any other title of dignity.)
