Notes: Marriage

At the time of the Acadian Expulsion in 1755, the large numbers of SAVOIE households in Acadia traced their ancestory to a common progenitor, Francois Savoie . He was born in 1621 in the Poitou Province of France. He emigrated to Port Royal in about 1643 and married Catherine Lejeune in 1652. She was born in 1633. A 1671 census showed Francois and Catherine to have had nine children.

Although after the 1755 expulsion, most of his descendants were exiled to various points along the Atlantic seaboard of British North America, at least six of his great-grandsons found their way to Louisiana, probably arriving in 1765 with a shipload of Acadian refugees from Halifax. All six first settled along the Mississippi River in St. James Parish. Few of the original Savoies remained in St. James, most migrating to either Opelousas or the Attakapas area.

Soon after coming to Louisiana, the youngest of the six brothers, Pierre and Jean dit Valois , moved to the Opelousas prairies to engage in stock raising. Jean married in 1773 Marguerite Bordelon settling in the Grand Coteau and Carencro areas. Along with other members of the clan, Jean made the area one of the main Savoie strongholds of the state.

General Notes: Husband - Pierre Le Jeune

There are a number of theories about Pierre LeJeune:

Theory 1: in 1611 Pierre came to Acadia with Pointrincourt; he was a Jesuit Priest.

Theory 2: ABT. 1619 Pierre arrived from France either as a single man or as a bondsman hired by one of the fur traders.

Theory 3: On 8 SEP 1632 Pierre arrived in Acadia wtih Isaac de Razilly.

Theory 4: ABT. 1636 a farmer from the from Martaize, Poitou region of France, came to Canada with D'Aulnay. He arrived in Acadia on the ship "St Jehan," which sailed from LaRochelle. However, in checking the passenger lists of this ship, the name LeJeune is not listed.

Theory 5: lived in Port Royal Fort with an Indian wife.

Fact: We know nothing about him, where he came from, not even his name as the father of Edmee and Catherine, who are the only two documented to be related.

General Notes: Husband - Ezekiel Richardson

The Richardson Memorial by John Adams Vinton, 1876, Brown & Thurston Co.,
Portland, ME, pg 130:
COLONEL EZEKIEL RICHARDSON, youngest son of Edward and Ann(Wilson)
Richardson, of Jay, Me.; born in West Cambridge, Mass., May 8, 1788; m.
Elizabeth Winter Leach, of Jay, Me., She was a sister of Hannah Leach
and Mary Pierce Leach, wives of Ezra and Josiah Richardson, elder
brothers of Ezekiel. They were daughters of Luke Leach, who came with
his family from Bridgewater, Mass, about the year 1801. His wife was
Molly Starr, sister of Rev. Robert and Judge James Starr. The Starrs, as
already stated, are descendants of Robert Calef, of Boston, who so
triumphantly exposed the witchcraft delusion of 1692.
Ezekiel Richard lived and died in Jay, where he was, for many years, in
mercantile business; but during his later years engaged in the business
of a civil engineer. He held public offices many years; was a
representative in the State legislature; was justice of the peace, county
commissioner, and colonel in the militia. He died July 12, 1838, aged 50.

1892, William Augustus Evans, a brother of Hon. George Evans, who
graduated Bowdoin College, in 1815, resided in Augusta, was a
representative of Maine in Congress, and her senator there, and died in
1867, aged 70.
I do notfind that William A. Evans was a graduate of any college. He
was, however, a lawyer and lived in Washington, D. C., many years as a
clerk. At the outbreak of the rebellion he came North, and is now, it is
said, in the Aroostook region, Maine. His wife Abigail died Feb. 12,
1872.

General Notes: Husband - Josiah Richardson

The Richardson Memorial by John Adams Vinton, 1876, Brown & Thurston Co.,
Portland, ME, pg 129-130:
JOSIAH RICHARDSON, Esq., fifth son of Edward and Ann Richardson; born
in West Cambridge, Mass., July 10, 1785; m., 1811, Mary Pierce Leach, of
Jay, Maine. She was born in South Bridgewater, Mass.
He removedin childhood, with his father's family, from Cambridge to
Jay, Maine, in 1793, when it was a rude, uncultivated state. In his
youth, 1805, he attended the academy in Fryeburg, Me., and boarded with
his aunt Weston (Ruth (Richardson) Weston]. In 1858, his granddaughter,
Julia Arnott Reade, attended the same institution, boarded in the same
house, with the same family, occupied thesame room, and used the same
Latin dictionary, that had been used by him fifty-three years before.
He lived in Jay till 1818, when he removed to Monmouth,Me., where he
resided twenty years. his chief motive in thus removing was to have his
children in the excellent academy there. He was always deeply interested
in the cause of education. He was engaged in mercantile business most of
the time, but at length, in Auburn, was engaged in pursuits of
agriculture. He was a justice of the peace, and one of the selectmen of
the town many years. His honesty and uprightness was proverbial.
He died in Auburn, Me.,1865, aged 80. On his headstone is sculptured,
"an honest man's the noblestwork of God." His widow is still living in
Auburn, 1874, at the age of 84.
She was descended, on the mother's side from Robert Calfe or Calef of
Roxbury, who died April 13, 1719. He had a son Robert, who was a
merchant in Boston; he m. Margaret Barton, Dec. 23, 1699. They had eight
or more children, most of whom died young. Their daughter Margaret m.
_____ Starr, and had four or more children. A daughter or granddaughter
of this Margaret Starr, was Mary Pierce Leach, the wife of Josiah
Richardson, of whom this notice treats.
A portrait of Margaret, the wife of Robert Calef, is in the possession
of Mrs. Mary Salina Reade, dau. of Josiah Richardson, from whom this
account was received.

The Richardson Memorial by John Adams Vinton, 1876, Brown & Thurston Co.,
Portland, ME, pg 165-166:
MARY SALINA RICHARDSON, dau. of Josiah and Mary Pierce(Leach)
Richardson of Jay, Me.; born there, May 23, 1814; m., 1836, Dan Reade,
born 1812, seventh son of Dan Reade, Esq., who came from Attleborough,
Mass., his native place to Lewiston, Me., in the early days of the town
last named. His mother was Susanna Hart, born in Durban, Maine. Dan
Reade, the father, was the first schoolmaster, the first postmaster, the
first town-clerk,the first justice of the peace, the first selectman,
and the first representative ever chosen in the town of Lewiston, Maine.
Dan Reade, the son suffered from ill health, when a boy, and was,
therefore, unaccustomed to manual labor. He "kept store" a number of
years, and became a sort of speculator. He has acquired some property
and likes fine horses. He has been agent for several parties at a
distance, and is a smart, capable man. He never smokes, neveruses
profane words, and has not tasted of intoxicating liquors these forty
years. He enjoys good health, and is always cheerful. His residence is
nowAuburn, Me., formerly Danville, on the Androscoggin River, and
opposite Lewiston.
His wife, the principal subject of this notice, is a capable, active,
cheerful, and well educated woman. She suffers much from bad health, and
though she writes much, is often obliged to write in a recumbent
posture. She is nervous, impulsive, and wide0-awake. She has written
for the papers since she was fourteen years old. She has a talent for
poetry, and in her younger years published a small volume of poems. Her
fugitive pieces are frequently seen in print, and are read on public and
festive occasions. She has corresponded with several eminent writers.
She is, in religious sentiment, a Unitarian, like her father. She has
taken a lively interest in this RICHARDSON MEMORIAL, and has rendered the
compiler very important assistance.

When I was researching in Stafford some years ago, I obtained a copy of a typed Washburn genealogical manuscript that stated that Ezra Senior and Junior both died in 1793. The author also stated that there was a family story that they were both buried in the same grave.

In attempting to see if I could verify the death dates, yesterday, I went to the Stafford Town Hall and researched a bound book of original church records.

attending meeting 28 June 1655. Lists 282, 298. He and his brother gave bonds 5 Dec. 1655 that he would go to England within 18 months to render full account to John Beex & Co. concerning the Piscataqua saw-mills. He probably took his wife and
never returned. His neice, Anne Clark (49) was granted administration of his estate in 1720.

UNPLACED:

Leane?, Samuel List 54.

Research Notes: Child - Richard Leader

Richard Gent. (2), brother of George (1), was engaged in Ireland (or England) to manage the ironworks outside Lynn in 1644, having had mining experience in Ireland and being "a perfect accountant." He came over with his wife, 2 children and 3
servants (including Thaddeus Riddan, bookkeeper) and settled in a house built by his employers, John Beex & Co., his salary being £100 a year, but proved unsuccessful in business and unpopular with the aythorities. He left there in 1650 and
lived for a time in Boston, but in Mar. 1650-1 had come to Maine, obtained a large grant on the Little Newichawannock River and began the erection of the sawmills known as Great Works. Later in 1651 he went to England and on his return was
charged with speaking against the government, but as the words were spoken "in the midst of the sea," the court had no jurisdiction. As Gov. Godfrey asked the Colonial Office to grant audience to Leader as "agent of the Province" 6 Nov. 1652,
he probably spent that winter in England also. Magistrate 1651, 1652; Kittery grants 1651, 1653, 1654; O. A. at Kittery 16 Nov. 1652. Lists 75a, 282, 283, 298, 323. He mortgaged a house in Boston and a house at Strawberry Bank, lately bought
from Mr. Ambrose Lane, to Mr. Thomas Savage in 1654, and sold both properties in 1655, the latter to John and Richard Cutt. R. Cutt's wife was sister of Leader's wife, who probably died before he came to Maine. He had sold 3/4 of Great Works to
London capitalists (John Beex, Richard Hutchinson, Col. William Beale and Capt. Thomas Alderne) in 1653, and the venture proving a failure, he mortgaged his remaining 1/4 on 14 Feb. 1655-6 to secure his appearance in London to render an account
within 18 months. Leaving Thomas Broughton as his attorney, he reached England 1 Sept. 1657 and remained there until May 1658 when he sailed for Barbadoes with a second wife, "a gentlewoman whom a long time had waited for me." On 16 Jan.
1659-60 he was in the sugar-refining business but intended to journey to New England in the spring. He did so, and died soon after. Administration was granted on his estate to Rev. Robert Jordan 27 Dec. 1661, to John Hole and Samuel Clark, hey
having married the daughters of said Leader, June 1663, and finally 6 Apr. 1720 to Mrs Anne Clark and her daughter Sarah Clark. Children two daughters Elizabeth, married John Hole (2) and Anne, married Samuel Clark (49).
LEADER: This name is found at Salehurst, co. Sussex, in a district of iron foundries, a most likely place for Richard and George Leader.
