In fact, he was the oldest person to ever live in Otisfield, living to the age of 102. He was a lumberman whose purpose for going to Otisfield was to build houses and settle the town. He settled on Scribner Hill on a lot he purchased from George Peirce on 19 December 1796 for $500.

Daniel is referred to as "Lieutenant" Daniel, however, the DAR PATRIOT INDEX, Centennial Edition, page 2595 (op. cit.), states that he served in the Continental Army as a Private. He enlisted at age 30 in 1778. He was said to be 5 feet, 5 inches tall.
An unrecorded Quit-Claim Deed dated 29 April 1780 (in the possession of Bourdon Scribner in Harrison, ME) states that Daniel Coffin sold 60 acres of land in Massabesic [Waterboro] to Daniel.

Born: Baptized: Died: Buried:

General Notes: Husband - Capt. Daniel Scribner
Daniel was one of the earliest settlers in Waterborough. He and his brothers, Edward, Samuel and John, all lived there, at least for a few years.
Each settler was required by the Proprietors (the ones who actually held title to the town's lands) to clear part of the land they claimed, erect a house and live in it for three years before being given title to their property. The Waterborough Proprietors, who lived in Boston, were very slow in agreeing to grant title to the settlers, even though the settlers had fulfilled the requirements. On 6 December 1781, Daniel, Daniel, Jr., Samuel, John and Edward were among the 22 settlers of Waterborough (then called Massabesick) who signed a petition to the Proprietors to have their land surveyed and, in essence, move the process along (the Proprietors had been meeting regularly for months, but only to meet legal meeting requirements and would, after setting the date of their next meeting, adjourn to the local coffee house). That petition reads as follows:
"Whereas the subscribers have taken up and are in possession of Lands in the Town of Massabesick, so called and Country adjacent belonging to and claimed by the proprietors under the will of Bridget Phillips, some time since deceased, and whereas said Proprietors are desirous of settling the country and quieting the Minds of the present Possessors of Lands belonging to said Proprietors, ... and are so inclined to dispose of one hundred acres to each Settler, and whereas the Quantity of Lands taken possession of cannot be ascertained untill surveyed and measured, - We the Subscribers Possessors thereof do hereby engage to have the Land by us at present held, surveyed and measured at our own Expence under the direction and with the [undecipherable] so that regular deeds may be made out and payment for said Lands agreed upon between us and the Proprietors. The price to be 4 shillings [Pound] Money in Gold or Silver for each acre of the 100 disposed to them" (WATERBOROUGH PROPRIETORS' RECORDS 1780-1790, Maine State Archives Microfilm Roll 614).
Daniel was commonly referred to as "Capt. Daniel." During the Revolutionary War, he served in a New Hampshire Regiment and attained the rank of Captain, which is how he was known for the rest of his life. It's believed that he was killed by Benjamin Kimball, husband of his daughter, Susan, in a fight over an unpaid debt. After Daniel's death, Benjamin and Susan left Otisfield and moved to Gilead, ME, or Milan, Coos County, NH, for a few years. They later returned to Otisfield.
Daniel's monument is in the Scribner Cemetery, Lower Yard, Scribner Hill, Otisfield. Elizabeth is buried in the Scribner Cemetery, Upper Yard.

General Notes: Husband - Daniel L. Scribner
Daniel was known as "Long Daniel" because he was a tall, slim man. He was a farmer in Otisfield and, at one time, a partner with his brother, Joseph, in a mill at East Otisfield (It burned in December 1901). He lived in Portland for several years, operating a hotel. Then, he moved on to Boston for a year or two before returning to Maine and Harrison where he lived for 15 years. He then moved back to Otisfield for a few years, then he moved to Bolster's Mills. Daniel is also remembered as being one of the old time fifers who played for the musters and other gatherings.
For a few years in the late 1800's, Daniel wrote an occasional newspaper column for the "Oxford County Advertiser" in which he told of his recollections of persons and events in Otisfield during the 19th century. For example, one article, "Recollections of an Old Man in His Eighty-first Year," in the 7 September 1883 edition, told about early wagons and carriages in Otisfield.
In the article he wrote for the 1 February 1884 edition, he states "I was born in Otisfield in the second year of the present century." Three years later, in the 3 June 1887 edition, he states "I was born 18 October 1802."

He settled on Scribner Hill on a lot he purchased from George Peirce on 19 December 1796 for $500.
General Notes: Child - Edward Scribner Jr.
Edward was a farmer. He died when he was thrown from a horse.
General Notes: Child - Joseph U. Scribner
Joseph was called "Uncle Jose" to distinguish him from the other Joseph Scribners.
His second wife, Mary, was the widow of Fletcher Ingalls, who died in Otisfield 16 August 1804 (OTISFIELD VRs [op. cit.], 307). She and Joseph are buried in the South Otisfield Cemetery.
Joseph was known to have an ugly temper. One day in 1816, while he was chopping wood, a constable, Squire Keith of Oxford, came to arrest him for debt. Joseph said to the officer, "You come an inch nearer and whit goes your horse's head." The officer stepped closer. Joseph then struck the horse with an axe and killed the horse. As a result, he was placed in jail in Portland for a time.
General Notes: Child - John Scribner 3rd.
John and Elizabeth rode on horseback to Otisfield in November of 1796, bringing with them their six-month-old son, William. They came by a trail of spotted trees near the end of their cold November journey through the wilderness of Maine.
The Norway, Maine, "Advertiser" of 24 October 1914, carried this article written by a nephew, Granville Fernald:
"One of the most conspicuous old men that I can remember was Uncle John Scribner, in his last years of life. He was of very portly form, and as he came up the aisle of the church, supported by his long staff, his venerable form and snowy locks suggested one of the old prophets of Israel. There were many Scribners, two or three generations that I can remember well. I have a distinct impression to this day of the beautiful expressive eyes of the race of Scribners in Otisfield. It is a feature of the family yet to be seen in some of the children of the family I know."

General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Scribner
It appears likely that Elizabeth died prior to 3 December 1724, which is when Samuel prepared his will. There is no mention of Elizabeth in it.
A question exists as to whether Samuel re-married following the death of Elizabeth. Even the chronicler of the Eastman Family, Guy S. Rix of Concord, New Hampshire, states (in his HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE EASTMAN FAMILY IN AMERICA [Concord: The author, 1901],13) that Samuel's second marriage, on 17 September 1719, was to Sarah Fifield, who died in Kingston, NH, 3 August 1726. However, there are compelling reasons as to the inaccuracy of that assumption. First, Rix is confusing Shuah Fifield (the woman in question) with her mother, Sarah. Second, Samuel was born in 1657. Shuah Fifield was born in Kingston on 13 March 1702/03, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Sherburne) Fifield (Kingston Town Records, quoted by Kathleen Hosier in KINGSTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE, EARLY FAMILIES, PATRIOTS & SOLDIERS [op. cit.], 65). That makes Samuel 46 years older than Shuah. Third, Kingston Town Records record the marriage on 17 September 1719 of Shuah Fifield (who died 3 August 1726) and Samuel's son, Samuel Eastman, Jr. This is corroborated by David W. Hoyt in THE OLD FAMILIES OF SALISBURY AND AMESBURY, MASSACHUSETTS,1[op. cit.], 146. A fourth reason would be that, in his will, Samuel makes no mention of Shuah.

He was also an honest, industrious citizen, always faithful in all his duties.
In 1900, Emily was working for Samuel A. Kneeland of Harrison, as his housekeeper. Kneeland's house was next door to that of Frank Foster, for whom Eri and Emily's daughter, Addie, was working as housekeeper and the man she eventually married.

John was the first Scribner to settle in Waterborough, moving there about 1770 from New Hampshire to do lumbering. According to THE HISTORY OF YORK COUNTY, MAINE (Philadelphia: Everts & Peck,1880), page 388: "The first settler was John Smith, who located near Waterborough Old Corner, in 1768. During the next two years, he was joined by seven other families: John Scribner, Robert Harvey, Alexander Jellison, Wm. Deering, Scammon Hodgdon, Wm. Philpot, and Wm. Nason. These men came from Berwick, Scarborough, and Somersworth, N.H., to engage in lumbering."
Along with his brother, Daniel, John served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.

Samuel and family moved from Raymond, New Hampshire, to Waterborough in September of 1764. One of the first Constables of Waterborough when the town was incorporated (March 6,1787), Samuel was the first Representative from Waterborough to the District Court of Massachusetts, 1789-91, and in 1794.
Perhaps his most noteworthy endeavor was being involved in the effort to have the Province of Maine set off as the State of Maine, which came to be in 1820. A sketch in the Lewiston, Maine, "Journal" of 27 February 1889 states: "Samuel Scribner was a great man. Among other things that he set on foot was to get the Province of Maine set off as a State from Mass. He also led in getting the County Seat of York moved from the town of York on the seacoast to what is now Alfred, Me. He also led in getting a portion of the town of Sanford set off as the town of Alfred as the York County Seat, in 1808. Samuel Scribner and two neighbors built on the original Scribner farm at Waterboro, Me., about 1790, a two-story building which was used for the alternate sittings of the York County Court until Alfred was set off as the permanent seat of the County. This building was also used for Town Meetings, for a school house, and for the First Baptist Church. An old record says, 'This house was built by Square Scribner, Square Burleigh and Square Warren.' "
Samuel enlisted July 1775 at Hollis, ME, and served 8 months in the Revolutionary War. He was about 40 years old when he enlisted and was a noble soldier.
According to his grandson, David W. Scribner, Samuel suffered a paralyzing stroke several years before his death. He lost the use of the left side of his body and was a cripple for the rest of his life (See Notes for DAVID W. SCRIBNER [50-i,160], below). Samuel is buried "in the old Scribner burying ground on the old original Scribner farm forming the Alfred line, at the head of Shaker Pond in Waterboro" (Letter from William Marshall Scribner to Abba Ella Knight in 1899). According to this letter, also buried there are Samuel's son, John, and John's son, Rowell.

John served in the Revolutionary War, and was a proprietor (an original owner of town land) of Gilmanton, Belknap, NH (THOMAS MUDGETT OF SALISBURY [op. cit.],53).
Nicholas was a farmer. Susannah was his second wife, since he had been married first to Judith Gilman (Noyes, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE [op. cit.], 615). We learn the names of their children from Nicholas' will.
His sister, Patience, married Joseph Eastman, a son of Susannah's uncle and aunt, Samuel and Elizabeth (Scribner) Eastman.
After Nicholas died, Susannah married a man named Thurston about 1763. We learn this from the fact that, in the account of Nicholas' will, when the estate was settled and allowed on 26 October 1763, Susannah is referred to as "Susanna Thurston, formerly widow of the deceased, executrix" (Hammond, PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, 4 [op. cit.], 503).
