General Notes: Husband - Nathaniel Millett
The Millett genealogy says Nathaniel was the first Millet to change the name from one "t".
Nathaniel received grants of land on the westerly side of Annisquam River and probably had his residence there. He finally settled at Kettle Cove, where in 1700, he and his sons had lands granted them "that were not to be alienated from the family so long as any of them survived." His 3 sons, Thomas, Andrew and Nathaniel, all settled near their father at Kettle Cove.
Millet Island is on the map of Gloucester by Boston. A ledge of Rock at Pigeon Cove - Cape Ann is called "Millett Ledge." It is seldom above the water at low tides. Rev. T. Smith of Falmouth ME says in his Journal that Millett and one Ingersol were drowned at Precampscot by the damming of the ice, raising a head of water in the night while they were asleep.

Thomas took to the sea, and was called "Captain and Mariner." When he married, he retired from seafaring and settled on Dover Neck, where he became a ship builder. He made several voyages to England and France, serving as master on his own ships. From one of these trips he brought fruit trees and originated the once celebrated "Millet Apple," which was supposed to be a variety of the Normandy pippin. For 20 years he was Judge of the New Hampshire Supreme Court, and he was known as the "Hon. Thomas Millet" in his latter days.
Millett gives the date of his death as "1 Aug. 1761-3".

General Notes: Husband - Lieut. Thomas Millett
Thomas enlisted in the Continental Army on 3 May 1775. The Company to which he belonged was in the battle of Bunker Hill. On the way to the battle they divided into two parts, one under the Captain and the other under the Lieutenant. Thomas was with the Lieutenant, and by the time they reached the site, the battle was essentially over and the seige of Boston broken. He joined Washington's army and stayed on after the term of his enlistment until after the battle of Trenton. He returned to Gloucester, and in April signed up for a year on the Hancock, a ship of 32 guns under the command of Captain John Manley. They sailed from Boston in May 1777. Cruising off Newfoundland, they captured a merchant vessel and the Fox, a sloop of war. But in August he was captured by the British warship Rainbow and impressed into service with her crew. At Halifax, on Christmas day, he and two others escaped by jumping overboard and swimming three miles to shore. From Liverpool, Nova Scotia he shipped out on the sloop Bermuda for Antigua, and went from there to St. Eustasia. In May of 1778 he shipped on the Dutch schooner for North Carolina, but was captured by the British and taken to New York. Here he was imprisoned until September. Then he was taken to Elizabethtown, New Jersey to be exchanged.
In the sixteen months that his family had not heard from him, his wife and four children had gone to New Gloucester, Maine to live with her brother William Parsons. Thomas joined them there. He never returned to Massachusetts. In 1781 he went with three other families to Leeds, Maine -- then in the heart of the wilderness. There he built a log house, and lived the rest of his life. Youngest son Benjamin always lived at the homestead, but the other children scattered to nearby areas. In 1813, age 81, Thomas applied for a pension, which was granted.
The story is told that on the day he died, Thomas hitched his team of horses to the buggy, drove to each of his children's homes for a visit, and died that night.

General Notes: Husband - Lieut. Thomas Millett
Millett gives the date of Thomas' baptism as "16 Aug 1632-3"; Torrey shows his birth as 1633. Since August is not one of the months that can use double-dating, the correct baptismal date is probably 16 August 1633. Reed and Mahler confirm that Thomas was not baptized at Newbury, Berkshire, where his father came from, but had not examined the St. Saviour's, Southwark, registers to confirm the date Millett gave.
Thomas, age 2, came with his parents in 1635 on the "Elizabeth".
Thomas married (1) Mary Eveleth; they had no children. He married (2) Abigail (Coit) Eveleth, widow of Mary's brother Isaac Eveleth. She bore him three sons, two of whom survived.
Savage says Thomas was at Gloucester in 1642. In 1655, Thomas had the land of his father, lying near the old Meeting-house Plain in Gloucester. Babson calls him Ensign in the military company; Millet calls him Lieutenant. He served a few years as a selectman.
Thomas came into possession of the land at Kettle Cove originally granted to Mr. Blynman. This was situated near the Manchester bounds, and in the last years of his life, Thomas was a resident of Manchester. He kept his house in Gloucester, however.
John Greenway (Greenaway), in a deed dated "fifth day, twelf month ... 1650", gave his house and lands at Dorchester to his daughter Ursula after the death of John and Mary Greenway. If Ursula were to die without children, the property was to go to "my kinsman and servant Thomas millett, the sonne of Thomas & mary Millett my sonne in Lawe & daughter", Thomas making specified payments to the other children of John Greenway and their heirs.
The will of Thomas Millett is dated 9 June 1707, proved 2 August 1708. He directs "unto my wifes three first children namely Isaac Evelethe, Job Evelethe and Hannah Bennett ye wife of Peter Bennett, foure pounds a peice." (Essex Co. Probates #9162).
Following his death there was apparently some dispute over the ownership of Isaac's Gloucester common right, for in the commanage list of 24 January 1708/1709 there is a note dated 7 March 1710 that states that as one of Thomas Millett's two common rights derived from "the house and land of Isaac Eveleth deceased the said Tho: Millett marrying with the widow..." the said right should revert to Isaac's children. Birth Notes: Husband - Jesse M. Ray
"Jesse M. Ray, a well-to-do and respected resident of Surry, Hancock County, was born in this town, August 17, 1824, son of Robert and Edith (Wormwood) Ray. Robert Ray, who was born and reared in one of the coast towns of Maine, after his marriage settled in Surry, which was then in its earliest stage of development. Having bought a tract of unbroken land on the Shore Road, he cleared a part of it, and for a time tilled the soil. He subsequently sold the property, and purchased land on the Bay Road, on which he was engaged in general farming and lumbering until his death, at the advanced age of seventy-nine years. His wife died at the homestead, in the sixty-sixth year of her age. Their family included fourteen children, namely: Susan and Henry, deceased; Mary, who first married the late Jacob Lord, and is now the wife to Philip Brown, of Surry; Phoebe, the wife of Philip Milliken, of Surry; Jane, Ingalls, Nathaniel, Almira, and Nancy deceased; Jesse M., the subject of this sketch; Adeline, deceased; Archibald, a resident of Massachusetts; and Frederick and Augustus, twins, who live in California.
Making the most of the educational advantages offered him at the district school, Jesse M. Ray obtained a good knowledge of the subjects there taught. Having a natural aptitude of mechanical pursuits, he afterward learned the trade of house and ship carpenter, and followed it in this locality for many years. Skilful in the use of tools, he was kept busily employed during his days of activity, and made carpentering and joining the chief occupation through life, although he was also engaged in trade for a time. A few years ago he built a fine residence in the village, where he and his family have since resided.
In politics Mr. Ray has been a faithful supporter of the Republican party since its formation. His first Presidential vote, cast in 1848, was given to Zachary Taylor. During one tern he represented his district in the legislature, and he was Town Treasurer for nine years and Collector of Taxes for three years. His religious belief brings him into fellowship with the Methodist Episcopal church, with which he united several years ago. In 1848 he married Miss Jane H. Milliken, a daughter of the late James Milliken and a sister of Henry J. of whom a brief sketch appears elsewhere in this work. The only child born of their union, Emily J., died at the ate of eighteen years."

Birth Notes: Child - Helen Jennett Milliken
She married Albert Blaisdell who by family accounts was a pretty violent and self-righteous man. My grandfather used to say that when he was courting my grandmother. Annice, he always took his revolve with him for protection.
Children of Albert and Helen: Howard, John, Annice, Blanch and Sadie.
Howard and John never married. John was mentally retarded and Howard took care of him until he died. John was somewhat of an idiot-savant because he could hear any piece of music and then play it on the piano by memory, but that is about all he could do. His father used to beat him unmercifully, and there was family speculation that those beatings caused brain damage.
Sadie married Archie Haney -- no children.
Blanch married and I believe had one child . She died young, perhaps in childbirth and I believe the child too, but I'm a little hazy on that point.
Annice married Henry Dunbar and they had eight children:
Harold died in early childhood.
Warren b. 1897 d. 1964 - married Linnie - no children. I don't know for sure her surname, but they did take in a young boy who was some relative of hers and he lived with them for several years. His name was Jackie (that is what we knew him by) MacDonald. Could he have been related to you? Maybe that was Linnie's last name too?
Alberta b. 1900 d. ca. 1930 m. Vincent Decourcy -- children Margaret, Russell and Edward.
Emily b. 1903 d. 1972 - married ? Coombs - one child, Sylvia.
Helen b. 1903 d. 1970 - no children (She and Emily were twins.)
Muriel b. 1907 d. 1970 married Roy Cotton: children Wayne b. 1929 (that's me) and Gloria b. 1933 d. 1997
Annice b. 1908 d. 1994 - no children
Geneva b. 1910 d. 1970 - no children
I have no children but my sister Gloria had 4 - Jennifer b. 1951, Lorraine b. 1954, Tracy b. 1968 and Vance b. 1963. Lorraine and Tracy have no children. Jennifer m. Raymond Archer - children- Emily b. 1974, Amanda, b. 1982 and Alexandra b. 1993. Vance m. Karan Kingman - children - Olivia, b. 1988 and Evan, b. 1993.
That's about it. As you can see, except for my grandmother Annice, the
descendants of Helen Milliken were not a prolific lot.

The best way for me to describe the relationship, is for
example if you have 6,000 people in your data base
that are connected via interlocking marriges, and
you find that you have a marriage that is interlocked into
one of my people in my data base, then they are related
via interlocking marriages, does not matter how distant.
The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 724,091 people via interlocking
marriages.
My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any

General Notes: Child - Joseph Daniel Peavey
According to "The History of Penobscot County", quote, "About 1840 a blacksmith by the name of Daniel Peavey moved into the town and occupied a little shop on the south side of the bridge. He was possessed of wonderful mechanical ability and patented many valuable inventions, among them the Peavey cant dog, now in general use all over the country, a hay press and a stump-puller that came to be commonly used. But his mechanical talent was better than his business talent, and he never gained wealth by his ingenuity. He was the father of a numerous family, among which were four pairs of twins."
This information seems to fit with Joseph except for the name Daniel. It is possible that Joseph went by the name Daniel and that his middle initial was D. instead of L. as is listed in other records. The twins have to fit with this Joseph. It is also possible that the author confused the father Joseph with his son Daniel but that does not seem likely because of the age of Daniel in 1840 and the number of years that would have passed before the son had children of his own. The 1840 Census Record for Lowell, which was a split off from Passadumkaeg has Joseph actually listed as J. Daniel and he has numerous sons which would match Joseph. There seems to be little doubt that Joseph's middle name was Daniel and he used it in many of the records. We do have a problem with the 1840 Census Record because it appears that Diane and Dianthe were listed as males instead of females. If that was an error on the part of the census taker the children would line up fairly well with the rest of our records.
Joseph was in Burlington, Penobscot County, Maine for the 1850 Census.
The following is a quotation from "The History of the Town of Burlington, Penobscot County, Maine".
"Joseph Peavey was in town by 1850 and settled on Folson Ridge in the southern part of the town. He came to Burlington from Levant (near Exeter), where he had settled in November 1829. According to the Levant records he was born in Brentwood, New Hampshire and his wife Susan was of Dracut, Massachusetts.
The Peavey's had at least 13 children. Of these, Daniel and Warren were also in town in 1850. The "History of Penobscot County" tells us that Daniel Peavey moved into Passadumkeag about 1840. He occupied a little shop at the south side of the bridge and there patented many valuable inventions, including the Peavey cantdog, hay press and stump puller. Hiram Peavey was in Passadumkeag and built a mill there is 1862. Both are sons of Jospeh of Burlington.
One of the major controversies in lumbering circles for years has been the identity of the man who invented the Peavey. Several towns up and down the Penobscot have claimed this Peavey as their own. Other than "The History of Penobscot County", quoted above, most agree that he was Joseph Peavey and that he was of Stillwater. Hatch's "Maine: A History", states that "the Peavey belongs distinctly to the Penobscot. Joseph Peavey, then of Upper Stillwater, formerly of Lincoln, in 1858, standing on the bridge watching some river-drivers at work below, with the old swing dog (swing bail) cant-dog, conceived an improvement. He was a blacksmith, and going to his shop nearby, he worked out his idea. The tool as he made it, has ever since been known as the peavey and is universally used in log driving."
The Peavey's of Burlington were all blacksmiths and it is likely that the Joseph of Lincoln was a son to Joseph of Burlington. Warren Peavey was the only member of the family in Burlington in 1860 and he remained there the rest of his life. He was well known to the people of the town as an expert in making bear traps, springs, axes, skates and hoop poles. He is buried at Folsom Ridge in an unmarked grave near Earl Harriman's place, formerly the Peavey Place." End Quote.
Putting the Census Records together with these histories and the cemetery records, most of the information can be reconciled. Joseph Daniel Peavey started in Levant in 1829 which was listed as part of Exeter in the 1830 census which is the first census that lists Joseph. He is then found in 1840 in Lowell which part of Passadumkaeg under the name of J. Daniel. This confirms the use of his middle name while he was in that area. The connection to Brentwood ties him to Samuel who was the only Peavey in the Brentwood Census before he moved to Maine. It is not clear how Joseph Daniel ended up in the Exeter area with the Tuftonborough and Farmington Peavey's but it is clear that he was there. Joseph seems to have been listed with Samuel in the 1810 & 1820 Census Records in Clinton, York County, Maine.
