On 23 March 1964, in response to my inquiry to the town clerk of
Yarmouth, Maine, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph
G. Mansfield, I received a response from Katherine P. Tinker. She cited no
sources. In the hand-drawn chart that she attached to the letter, she
identified Edward and Mary as the parents of Mercy Southworth and also
identified Edward as the son of Constant Southworth.

Per Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . . 8th Ed." (9:41), the youngest son. Weis does not feel that the case for Edward being the father of CONSTANT and Thomas is adequately proven. Other research, however has convinced me that the link, although not certain, is extremely likely.
According to the book "Colonial and Revolutionary Lineages in America" Vol. 19, Edward was a silk worker in Leyden, Holland.

Under the date November 19, 1938, Mrs. Mary J. Sibley, Genealogist, wrote to the Blackburn Grammar School at Blackburn, Lancashire, England. The gist of her letter is as follows: -
Ê
"I have examined the records of the Blackburn Grammar School, by George Alfred Stocks, published in 1909 in the Chetham Society Publication. Stocks does not list the pupils, but in the introduction he states - 'We learn names of the five who fled beyond the seas because of their complicity in the Counter-Reformation.' He does not name them. Will you kindly have someone examine your records prior to 1629 and send me what data you have, especially of Edward Southworth and his brother Thomas Southworth, and also, the two sons of Edward Southworth, Constant and Thomas - if they attended the school."
Ê
"In 1893 a local antiquarian, Mister Joseph Baron of Blackburn, to Mister Horatius W. Southworth, of the Springfield, Massachusetts Southworth, that Edward of Samlesbury went to Leyden, Holland; but did not name his authority. I am trying to find proof of this identity. Every item will be valuable. In 1602 Edward and his brothers, including Thomas, were still in the neighborhood of Samlesbury for they were all listed as foreign burgesses with their father in the Preston (Lancashire) Guild Roll of that year. They were all mentioned by their grandfather, Sir John Southworth, in his will dated September 17, 1593. Sir John died November 3, the same year."
Ê
"In 1622, William and Christopher, brothers of Edward Southworth of Samlesbury, were still on the rolls of the Preston, Lancashire Guild, but Thomas and Edward were omitted, indicating they were dead. William is given at the time of his grandfather's death (1595) as of Holcroft, Lancashire."
Ê
"The first authentic record of Edward Southworth at Leyden, Holland was on November 13, 1610, as a witness at a betrothal, which would suggest that he was then of age, and he married Alice Carpenter at Leyden, May 28, 1613, with his brother, Thomas, as his attendant, the record of which states that Edward was from England."
Ê
"A preserved letter shows that Edward Southworth, previously of Leyden, Holland was living at Heneage House, Duke's Place, Aldgate Ward, London, in 1620. He must have died in 1620, or early 1621 for his nephew stated at the time of his widow's death, in an ode in her honor, that he died young."
Ê
"I mean good Edward Southworth, who not long
Continued in this world the saints among.
With him she lived seven years a wife,
Till death put a period to his life,"
Ê
Alice, his widow, came to Plymouth, Massachusetts on the ship Anne in 1623, and in August that year married Governor William Bradford. Edward's sons, Constant (born 1614) and Thomas (born 1616) remained in England till 1628-9, presumably to be educated. If they were pupils in Blackburn Grammar School the information would be important. Both Sir John Southworth (died 1595) and his eldest son and heir, Thomas Southworth, Esquire were Governors and contributors to the school; therefore entitled to have their sons educated there." [End of letter to Blackburn Grammar School.]
Ê
Since the arms brought to Plymouth by Edward's widow had a sable field and since the Samlesbury Southworths bore the same and were the only Southworths in England who did - and the heir male had used crosses patonce, flory and crosslet, it seems conclusive that Edward of Samlesbury and Edward of Leyden were identical.
Mrs. Mary J. Sibley

General Notes: Husband - Isaac Wainwright
There follows two exerpts from the book, "Philadelphia and Her Merchants," published in 1860 by the author, Abraham Ritter.
Chapter XIII Water Street, Arch to Race
---------No. 57, in 1793, and adjoins the industrial block and pump-maker depot of Isaac Wainwright. These premises run through to the wharf and the water itself, for at the foot of his yard there was a dock for the soaking and safe keeping of logs, a very sink of mortality to those who ventured to run their role from wharf to wharf, a memorable fact to your author, who, but for the timely hand of a larger boy, and the extra capillary of his head, would certainly not have been here now to tell a tale of days and things lang syne. Humbly, but vastly important to maritime requirements, the saw, the auger, and the chisel noised their daily services to shape and bore a pump, or fit a sheeve and block to the hand of a inquiring mariner. Mr. Wainwright was perhaps the most popular block and pump maker of his day. His son Jonathan succeeded him in the business, and continued it for many years. Thence he removed to Kensington, and establishe DA saw-mill and board yard, and at the same time acting as President of the Kensington Bank. He resigned the presidency creditable to his services, and retired to his more active business calling, which with his sons, he yet industriously pursues. In this connection I take occasion to state that his brother William was the persecuted President of the Com mercial Bank: for upon investigation he was honorably acquitted. Isaac Wainwright, the sire, died in July, 1844, in his eighty-third year.
Chapter XIX Front Street, east side Race to Arch
Passing a boarding-house and the shoemaker shop of Richard Miles of No. 72, we came to a nest of frames of two stories -----------. Isaac Wainwright bounds these frames by a very respectable three-story brick; it was of modern appearance and character in 1800, and from the steps down the best and handsomest house. Mr Wainwright was a respectable member of the Society of Friends; a good citizen and estimable neighbor.
The Wainwrigfhts came to America from England two years after William Penn.
General Notes: Wife - Rhoda Sparks
Rhoda's parents are listed here as Henry and Sarah following information which was probably given to Richard Sparks Wainwright by his uncle, Henry Edwin Tripler in 1929. On the other hand, a letter written by Chandler P. Wainwright on July 26, 1902 to a cousin states that Rhoda Sparks' father's name was James. He says that the name is often mentioned in Westcotts' "History of Philadelphia". The cousin's name may have been Mrs. Newkins; Chandler's writing is not clear.

If Henry's birth year is correct as stated here he must have been born very early in the year unless he was actually the twin of his brother Jonathan who was born in October of the same year.

Here is an exerp from book, "History of Union County, INdiana 1821-1988" page 281, entitled Wainwright--Johnson" Isaac Jr. was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1789, on of ten children born to Isaac Sr. and Rhonda Sprks Wainwright. Isaac Jr. married Margaret Burns and they had two sons, John and Henry. Infant Henry and his mother, Margaret died during child birth. Soon after, Isaac Jr. left Philadelphia adn went to Lynchburg, VA. He settled in a Quaker settlement and married Lucinda Johnson, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Hargrave Johnson. Three children were born in Lynshburg, Benjamin, Joseph and Mary Matilda. Joseph died in infancy. Sometime between 1827 and 1828, Isaac and Lucinda, along with Benjamin Johnson and family came to Union County, IN.
Isaac Jr. purchased 234 acres of farm land near College Corner, and they havd five more children, Sarah, Mariah (died at a few months), Caroline (died at age 19), Rhoda and Charles. Lucinda died four months after giving birth to Charles. Two years later, Isaac Jr. barried Margaret Wescoat and they had two daughters, Masrgaret Catherine and Lucinda.
Isaac Jr. and Margaret's (Burns) son, John married Susan Fouch of Liberty. They lived on a farm at College Corner and later went to Montfgomery County, IN.
Issac Jr. and Lucinda's daughter, Mary Marilda, married Laban Haworth, Rhonda married William Willis, Sarah remained single throughout her live. Their son, Charles married Sarah Ring, daughter of W. Harden and Martha Snodgrass Ring. They lived on a farm at College Corner and later went to Kosciusko County, IN, where he owned and operated a well-drilling and Hardware Business.
Isaac Jr. and Margaret's (Wescoat) daughter, M. Catherine, married Joseph Pierce and their granddaughter is Freda (John) Corrington. Their daughter, Lucinda, married Franklin Sanford and their granddaughter is Shirley (Nickles) Schunk.
Isaac Jr. Wainwright died Apr 23, 1873 and Lucinda (Johnson) Wainwright died Nov 20, 1936. They are buried at East Cemetery. They were members of the Methodist Church in Liberty and attended regularly. The church was in the same location as it is today.
General Notes: Child - William Wainwright
William was at one time the president of the Commercial Bank in Philadelphia.
General Notes: Child - Charles B. Wainwright
Charles is mentioned in the genealogy compiled by Caleb Cushing Eyre who records Jonathan as "brother of Charles B. Wainwright" and reports the marriage of Charles and Martha Ann. His date of birth and order of birth among the children of Isaac are unknown.
General Notes: Child - Henry Wainwright
Henry's birth in 1816 is inconsistant with Rhoda's death in 1815. Apart from errors in dates, another possibility is that he is the son of Matilda Williams. On the other hand, the note filed here under Matilda's name gives a 1819 date for her disowning by the Quakers. This seems to imply that she wasn't married to Isaac till about that time. Still another possibility is that Henry is not Isaac's son but rather the son of Jonathan and Susan Eyre Wainwright. The minutes of the Quaker Philadelphia Monthly Meeting notes "Henry Wainwright, son of J.W (check this) died 11 Sep. 1816".

John was a taxpayer in Clinton, ME in 1797, but moved to Winslow, ME

John Wyman was elected to the position of fence viewer in Brighton in

John,
I noticed on WorldConnect that you show that the John Wyman who married
Abiah Spaulding was a son of William Wyman and Love Chick. That couple
did
have a son Johnof almost the same age, and who lived a while in
Winslow, but he wasn't theJohn in Winslow who md Abiah.
The John who md Abiah was a son of Reuben Wymanand Elizabeth Bancroft,
which helps explain a lot - e.g. a son named Bancroft, etc. If you want
to
verify, I would suggest as a starter that you consult Wyman Genealogy,
Vol
1, by Thomas Bellows Wyman Jr., Charlestown, Massachusetts. It was in
the
collection of the New England Historic & Genealogical Society, Boston, ca
1993. It contains considerable data on Reuben, his descendants and
forebears. An earlier version was printed in the Register, vol3, pp.
33-8, and was reprinted in pamphlet form.
Thought you would want to know.

Following the usual customof the day, John was elected hog reeve at the
Brighton town meeting in 1818,the first town meeting after being
married. In 1819, his involvement in town government changed to surveyor
of highways and fence viewer. Brighton town records show that he backed
away from civic duties for the next few years, but was elected to various
posts occasionally over the coming years.

Research Notes: Wife - Margaret Spencer
MARGARET C3 SPENCER (2. Patience 2 William 1), born circa 1632, died by 1673 (husband's second marriage); married as his first wife before Mar 1653 (birth of first known child) DANIEL 1 GOODWIN, believed to be the Daniel Goodwin born Yoxford, Suffolk, England 1617 (IGI) or 1620 (rickmorgan@mediaone.net; CFAA), died by 16 Mar 1712/3 when his son Thomas took administration of his estate (MPA 2/100, #6985), son of Daniel and Dorothy (Barker) Goodwin. Daniel married second after July 1673 widow Sarah (Sanders) Turbet, daughter of Lt John Saunders of Wells and Cape Porpoise, and widow of Peter 1 Turbet.
Margaret's father, Thomas Spencer, provided very well for her, his eldest daughter, as seen in the following excerpt from YD 2:79:
The deposisun of Nicholasse Hodesden & his wife Aged 40 years & upward. These deponants being sworen saith that about fifteene or sixteene yeares agooe that Thomas Spenseer being att quamphegon at the howes wee then lived in said that he had given the on half of his half part of the mill & Timber thereunto belonging being on quartor part of the mill unto Daniell Goodin for his dafters Portion Nickhollas Hodsden & his wife reploied & said neyhbouer Spenser I wish you well to Consedar what you doe for you had many Children & every on would have a lettell & you cannot give every one such A Portion & he answared & said that shee wase the Eldest dafter & hee had don yt & farther saith not:/ Taken upon oath this 18th day of Aprill 1670
Daniel was in Kittery by 1652, as he deposed in Aug 1701 that he had been a resident of the upper part of Kittery for fifty years. If he is the Daniel of Yoxford as suggested above, he could have been the Daniel Goodwin with brother Stephen who were headrights for land in VA for their uncle William Barker, captain of the ship America. In 1702 he appears on a list of the original members of the Berwick Church. While there was an earlier church by 1663, no records survive (Old Kittery Families, 195fl) and there was no official Congregational Church in Berwick before 1702 (Joseph Anderson, personal communication).
Daniel Goodwin was a keeper of a public house in Kittery for many years. He was also town commissioner and sergeant, constable for 1662/3 and coroner in 1668. In 1711, Daniel and second wife Sarah gave a deed to his son Thomas for the homestead in return for maintenance during their natural lives (YD 7:220).
Daniel's last child, SARAH GOODWIN, was his second wife's child, rather than Margaret's. This daughter Sarah, born ca 1674, married Berwick 6 Dec 1694 Isaac Barron of Chelmsford MA, a soldier assigned to guard Berwick, and had at least four daughters recorded in Chelmsford, surname Barron: 1. Sarah, b 29 Sep 1695 2. Mary b 11 Sep 1698 3. Elizabeth b 9 Sep 1700 4. Hannah b 14 Oct 1703. [page 20]
Children, born Berwick ME (Seaman, "Daniel Goodwin", 271), surname GOODWIN:
18 i. PATIENCE C4 b 23 Mar 1653.
19 ii. DANIEL, b ca 1656.
20 iii. THOMAS, b ca 1657.
21 iv. JAMES, b ca 1658.
v. (probably) ADAM, b after 1656; d after 1675 (LND). He was absent from meeting in 1675.
22 vi. WILLIAM, b 1663 (R Morgan, CFAA).
23 vii. MOSES, b ca 1665.
24 viii. ELIZABETH b 1661 or ca 1666.
