When the Revolutionary War broke out, Reuben fought with the Loyalists, joining Major Berrymore's Regiment of Voluntary Cavalry, under Col. Delancy. Becauseof this, he lost his manor, farm, horses, livestock, and money. His left arm was shot off above the wrist by a cannonball. In 1783 he joined one of the firstgroup of Westchester Co. Loyalists to be resettled in Parrtown (later renamed Saint John), New Brunswick, Canada. It is unclear whether William was born in Dec.1782 in Westchester Co., New York, or 1784 in New Brunswick. The first winter in Saint John was extremely difficult. Poor planning, by the leaders of this Loyalist group, resulted in few shelters having been built. Inadequate provisions were provided for these reluctant settlers during a very harsh winter. Many went hungry. This Loyalist group relied on the kindest of their neighbors who shared their cabins, until they were very overcrowded. Others had to make do with tents. Many of these Loyalists did not survive this winter. Reuben and his family nearly starved to death. Reuben later settled in Gagetown with his family. He died there in July 1802 when he drowned in the St. John River. Only his wife is mentioned in his will. He is buried in Gagetown with his wife Mary.

General Notes: Husband - Reuben Williams

William was born in New Brunswick, according to son John's death certificate. William and Mary were married by Rev. Richard Clarke. In the summer of 1813, William and Mary moved to Houlton, Aroostook County, Maine. William built a log cabin on lot #20, at the top of Garrison Hill. They were the 13th family to settle there (and the first family who was not from Mass). He bought land in the Williams College Grant in 1823, 1826, and 1828. Mary bought land in Houlton in 1820 and 1825. William became a member of the First Congregationalist Church of Houlton Plantation on Nov. 1, 1818. Later, he was a pat-time minister there and a chaplain for the Masonic Lodge. He appears in the 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 Census of Houlton. About this time, William decided that Houlton had become too crowded, so he and his family moved to Amity. He bought 400 acres of land in South Amity along Calais Road. William and his sons cleared the land on 4 lots and built a log cabin. Some of his sons took over these other lots and built their own houses there. William was a farmer. He is described as: 6 ft. tall, 165 lbs., with brown eyes. His wife Mary was 5 1/2 ft. tall and 125 lbs. In 1850, their property was valued at $1000. (The 1850 Federal Census also lists George Fletcher, age 13, born Woodstock, N.B., living with this family.) Later in life, William and Mary moved to Hodgdon to be with some of their other children. William died at age 78 in Hodgdon, Maine. Mary at age 75 and was buried next to her husband. Her probate record of Jan. 25, 1861 gave $4000 to her son Jared Williams. This was signed by her heirs: M.M. Williams, Bertha P. Jewell, Elizabeth C. Ham, Charles F. Williams, and A.G. Williams.

EAST MILLINOCKET – Stephen M. York Jr., 36, went to be with the Lord Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, from a Millinocket hospital, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was born March 8, 1975, in Vista, Calif., the son of Stephen M. and Laurie M. York, and Joyce and Butch Smith.
Stephen was a graduate of Schenck High School, class of 1994. He was a three-sport athlete throughout his high school career, particularly excelling at soccer. Stephen was proud to have been a part of the 1994 State Champion Basketball Schenck Wolverines team that went 22-0. He received his vocational training in Chicopee, Mass., and was a welder by trade. After completing his training, he worked in Indiana, where he met his wife, Willow Robertson. Stephen was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and spent many hours riding wherever the road would take him. He was a devoted son, husband, father, brother and friend to all who knew him, and will be remembered as a straight shooter, as well as a loyal fan of the Chicago Bears and the Los Angeles Lakers.
In addition to his parents, Stephen is survived by the two great loves of his life, his wife, Willow York and their daughter, Ava Meridian York; his two best friends, his brothers, Jason York and his wife, Heather, and Donnie "Bubba" York and his wife, Nicole, all of East Millinocket; a sister, Nicole Cox and her husband, Robbie, of Medway; a sister-in-law, Dawn Smith and her husband, Jon, and their son, Nathan, of Salem, Ind.; grandparents, Donald "Tata" and Gloria "Gogo" Hendsbee of East Millinocket, Lucille Whitworth of English, Ind., and Betty McLaughlin of Medway; a special friend, Johnny Cibula of Prince George, Va.; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by grandparents, Guy and Josephine York, Lloyd Whitworth, and Albert Van Dine; his parents-in-law, William Robertson and Janice Lucy; and a cousin, Jeremy Hendsbee.
Friends are invited to visit with the family 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 2 Orchard St., East Millinocket, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, with the Rev. Reggie Adams, pastor, and the Rev. Dottie Hutch officiating. Gifts in memory of Stephen may be sent to Katahdin Area Support Group, 10 Field St., Millinocket, ME 04462. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, East Millinocket. Messages of condolence may be expressed at

A story in THE DAILY ENQUIRER (Provo, UT newspaper), January 5, 1886, about a "Grand Ball at Payson," listed among the young ladies in attendance "Miss May Wightman." Mr. Charley Vanina was listed among the young gentlemen. (see http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cgi-bin/docviewer.exe?CISOROOT=/tde1b&CISOPTR=17103&CISOSHOW=17104&CISOSHOW2=17115 ) Was May her nickname, or was this a typographical error?
THE DAILY ENQUIRER (Provo, UT newspaper), August 12, 1895:
"Mary Elizabeth Vanina has begun suit against Charles E. Vanina. They reside at Payson, where they were married Aug. 27, 1886. Plaintiff alleges desertion and wants the custody of the one child, issue of the marriage." (see http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cgi-bin/docviewer.exe?CISOROOT=/tde4a&CISOPTR=2087&CISOSHOW=2091&CISOSHOW2=2123 )
Marriage index: Homer F. Fort, age 40, and Mrs. Mary E. Vanina, 31, were married, 14 Oct 1895 at Provo, Utah County, Utah. (see http://abish.byui.edu/specialCollections/westernStates/westernStatesRecordDetail.cfm?recordID=272007 )
THE DAILY ENQUIRER (Provo, UT newspaper), October 14, 1895:
"Dr. H. F. Foot and Mary E. Vanina were today made husband and wife at the Hotel Roberts, Judge Dusenberry tying the nuptial bands. They are both of Payson where the Dr. has been in practice for a year or more. She is a Payson girl. There were a number of friends of the bride and bridegroom present to witness the interesting event, and congratulations were hearty." (see http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cgi-bin/docviewer.exe?CISOROOT=/tde4a&CISOPTR=10837&CISOSHOW=10841&CISOSHOW2=10871 )
*apparently "Foot" was a typographical error.
THE DAILY ENQUIRER (Provo, UT newspaper), October 17, 1895:
"Marriage licences have been issued to......Homer F. Fort aged 40, and Mary E. Varina, aged 31, both of Payson." (see http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cgi-bin/docviewer.exe?CISOROOT=/tde4a&CISOPTR=11874&CISOSHOW=11878&CISOSHOW2=11912 )

*Jane Elizabeth Day, daughter of William Day and Mary Ann Leonard, married William Charles Wightman twice. The first time was on 22 Mar 1862, as his 2nd wife in the principle of plural marriage (polygamy), which was practiced at that time. She was living with him & his first wife and family in the 1870 census, but was living next door (by herself) when the 1880 census was taken. By 1900 the Mormon church had outlawed the practice of polygamy, and in that census, Jane was still living nearby William C. Wightman and his first wife, but was listed as a "widow" (even though William was still living). After William Charles Wightman's first wife Lucretia died in 1907, he and Jane E. Day were married for a second time, on 15 Feb 1908 in Payson, Utah (see http://abish.byui.edu/specialCollections/westernStates/westernStatesRecordDetail.cfm?recordID=389665). They were living together in the 1910 census, listed as having being married for 2 years. William Charles and Jane Elizabeth Day Wightman had 3 children: Charles Day Wightman (1868), George Walker Wightman (1871), and William Day Wightman (1877), but they all died young.

John,
I had to do some newspaper research yesterday in Auburn, and had a
chance to check out the shooting story. First I called the town office&
found out that Lincoln died May 25th, so I now I had a date to work
with. Sure enough...front page....and rather a sad tale. He shot the
constable because the constable
shot his dog after he refused to pay the dog tax! I probably would have
shot him too if he'd shot my dog! (Said by a true animal lover!!!). I
made copies of the article & will send them to you after I receive your
address. The article sounded like an old western shoot-out. Certainly,
it will make interesting family gossip.

Lincoln A. Wyman, Offended
Because Constable Berry Killed His Dog, Shot the Con-
Stable and Then Com-
mitted Suicide
------------------------
Livermore Falls, May 26--Lincoln A. Wyman, 50, shot and seriously
wounded Howard P. Berry, a town constable, at about 8:30 o'clock this
morning, and later committed suicide by shooting himself through the head
with a .38 caliber revolver. Wyman used both barrels of a 12 gauge
double-barreled shot gun in his attack on Berry. The attack was made
becauseBerry killed Wyman's dog after the latter had refused to pay a
dog tax. Berry is at the C. M. G. Hospital, Lewiston, in serious
condition and his recovery is doubtful.
----------
Several days ago, Berry called on Wyman for his dog tax and Wyman
refused to pay. After several days had elapsed, Berry went to the Wyman
house and shot Wyman's dog. Wyman was summoned to appear in the
Livermore Municipal Court, yesterday morning, but refused to go unless
Berry came after him. Berry, it is understood, agreed to go and hired an
automobile from the Livermore Falls Garage with J. H. Crosson as driver.
When Berry arrived at the Wyman house, he leaped out of the machine
just as Wyman opened a door leading from the house into the yard. Wyman
is alleged to have said to berry: "You killed my dog," and as Berry
replied that he had, Wyman reachedbehind the door casing, drew out a
double-barreled shotgun, and fired. Berry returned the fire and at about
the same time dodged behind the automobile. The chauffeur had climbed

Wyman is alleged tohave chased Berry around the car and fired the
remaining charge at him. This shot took effect in the power part of
Berry's face and in his chest. The principle wounds are in his lungs. At
the Central Maine General Hospital, where Mr. Berry was taken immediately
following the shooting, it was stated, lastevening, that he was in
serious condition. While still conscious, he suffered great pain from
his wounds, and his condition was such as to preclude any attempt to
remove the bullets.
Four or five shots penetrated his chest and lungs, and his lower jaw
and mouth were badly torn. There were no wounds on any other part of his
body, and except for the lower part, his face is comparatively free from
bullet holes.
After the shooting was over, Crosson came outfrom behind the shed and
was ordered to "get out" or Wyman "would get him," too. Crosson hurried
to Livermore where he notified Deputy Sheriff Thomas R.Williams and
Sheriff Stevens, who with Deputy S

Sir,
It is with great pleasure that I write this to you!!!! I have been
doingresearch into my family tree off and on for a few years. I had
been doing my father's side because Mom didn't seem to know to much about
her Maine relatives.
However one day I persuaded her to tell me as much as she knew and that
started me on my search for my Mom's side of the tree. The one story
thatstuck out was her telling me HER grandfather shot himself 'over a
dog' and that his name was Abraham Lincoln Wyman. I also found that he
married Jennie Eunice Varnum and they had my Grandfather Alton (BTW-I
went to the Maine StatePolice Headquarters to see if there were any
pictures of him there, and the told me they never had a trooper by the
name of Alton S. Wyman) (My Mom has apicture of him on patrol, in
uniform, with a car stopped on the side of the road) (Go figure)
I'm sorry-I was so excited about finding your web page about Abraham I
forgot to introduce myself: My name is Stephen Wyman Nash, my mothers
name is Frances Birdella (Wyman) Nash. She is the daughter of Alton and
his first wife Gladys Meggerson Phelps of Newport News Va.. I have all of
their data but very little after them. Wow, I am so excited I can't think
right. I don't know what to ask first!!! The most obvious is-How do I go
about obtaining this info? May I copy the story in the e-mail letter? Is
it properto ask if we could contact each other? We do travel once a
year to Portlandfor a convention (usually in November) so any help with
pointing me to the right research would be appreciated. Mom did say she
would like to know more about her ancestors, so any help is
appreciated!!!
I have a number of ways of being contacted. Phone, fax, cell phone, AOL
IM, ICQ, email. I'm ramblingnow--I'm sorry. My phone number is (xxx)
xxx-xxxx and I guess you have my email address or just reply to this
message (if you desire).
I'm sorry for taking up so much of your time and will close now, with a
hearty Thank You for this site and God bless you!!!
Steve

.... Oh, by the way, my Dad told me something today, when I showed him
your email, that may be of interest to you (or you might know already).
Granddaddy Wyman was the trooper who installed the first radio system for
the State Police, and he (my Dad) was quite emphatic about it too! Gee,
the things you find out.....!
It feels good when you find BLOOD relations!!
God Bless you and keep you,
Steve

[Brøderbund WFT European Origins Vol. E1, Ed. 1, Tree #0003, Date of Import: Dec 25, 1999]
known as George Vaughan of Scituate, massachusetts
George Vaughan was born in England or Wales about 1625-27. He deposed in 1650 aged 23 and was aged 25 in 1652. In 1650 he was of Essex Co., Mass. and testified concerning the last will and testament of Honor Rolfe. She left a nuncupative will to which he and Henry Lakin of Charlestown swore (Essex Co. Probate printed records 1. 137). It seems quite possible that he was a younger brother of William Vaughan of Portsmouth, N.H., who married Margaret Cutts. There was an earlier George Vaughan who Came to the colonies in 1631 but returned to England. -- "It is suggested that George and William were his sons and that possibly John of Rhode Island was of the same family" (Mrs. Mary L. Holman in American Genealogist. Vol. 23-24 P. 24-31). He appears in Marsfield, Mass. in 1652 when he married Elizabeth Hinksman daughter of Edmond. (Mayflower Descendants Mag. Vol. 2, P.4-- Marshfield Vital Statistics-- P. 1 New England Gen. Register Vol. 16, P. 347). There his first five children were born and baptized in the Second Church of Scituate -- now the First Unitarian of Norwell, Mass. On June 5, 1658 he was sued by John Sutton for detaining a bill. He was fined in Marshfield on Oct. 21, 1666 for not attending public service. (colony records) On March 1663/4, he sued William Shurtleff for debt and won. July 5, 1699 he is allowed to keep an Inn or "Ordinary" for the entertainment of strangers at Middlebury. (Court order, Plymouth Col. Rec. 5.24.) Two more Children, George and Mercy were born to them in Middleboro -- both mentioned in his will, but since many Middleboro Records were destroyed in King Philips War in 1675*, they were not recorded. Much of the data we have was compiled from Bible records, documents preserved by citizens and from Plymouth Church Records of which Middleboro was at first part. He was a Freeman among the list of residents in 1663 in Middleboro, owned much land, was a town constable 1 June 1675, was in the garrison at the outbreak of King Philip's War. He and Many of his descendants lived in that part of Middleboro known as the Wauppaunucket. There still is a Vaughan Street in that section. 1n 1677 he purchased William Hoskin's share in 26 mens purchase -- passed to Joseph in 1690. (Mayflower Descendants Mag. Vol. 2, P. 159, Vol 10, P. 1-9,101.)See Weston's History of Middle- boro. He died 20 October 1694 in his 73rd yr. and is burrued in Nemasket Hill Cemetery beside his wife Elizabeth who died 26 June 1693 in her 60th year. Hers is the oldest stone in the cemetery. The inscription is still legible. His will dated June 30, 1694 was proved 10 Nov. 1694. The Inventory was taken by Samuel Wood and John Bennett. His property ammounted to L-43, 8-s, 4-p-some over $2,000 in those days.
Will of George Vaughan:
Following the usual preamble, it states--
1. "I do bequeath to my son, Daniel Vaughan, the lot of land which he now lives on with 1/2 my undivided meddow to him and his heirs etc.
2. To my son, George Vaughan, I do give a 20 acre lot lying at ye head of ye lot of John Cob. with 3 acres and a half of the meddow lying in the meddow, commonly calles the lower meddow, and an interest in all my undivided upland, also my best bed with 2 sheets, a coverlid, a rugge and one blanket, two pillows with pillow-beers, a bolster and curtains--to him and his heirs etc.
3. To my daughter, Mary Washburn, I do give ten acres of land lying where my house now stands that I now live in with a bed and a rugge.
4. All my upland and meddow except what is afore mentioned I do give my son, Joseph Vaughan.
5. To my daughter, Elizabeth Howland, I give my biggest brass kettle.
6. To my daughter, Mercy Due, I do give a bed and bolster.
The rest of my estate I do give to my children (my debts and necessary charges paid first) equally to be divided among them except that my son George Vaughan shal have a doubl share of all my iron and pewter vessels of my household stuff -- I appiont my eldest son, Joseph's custody till he be settled.
He was a man of considerable education-- for he kept a diary or record book dated Oct. 16, 1687 -- a photostat of the frontispiece the author (A.V.W.) possesses. The book is partly written in Latin -- containes many mathematical calculations and is one in exquisite penmanship. This book was passed from eldest son --
or grandson -- and containes this inscription.
"Daniel Vaughan, his book, givento him by his honored grand- father Daniel Vaughan, 1788. James Vaughan his book given him by his father, Daniel, 1844. Volney Vaughan, his book given him by his father Aug. 1882."
Also in the book --
"Daniel Vaughan, March ye 22, 1757. This year I am 44 years of age and I was born Oct. ye 29, 1712.O.S."

THE MAYFLOWER DESCENDANT
VOL 18 PAGE 115
George Vaughan (1) died at Middleborough, Mass., on 20 October, 1694, in his seventy-third year, and his wife died there on 24 June, 1693, in her sixtieth year, according to the records of that town. His will was made at Middleborough, on 30 June, 1694, and proved at Plymouth, on 10 November, 1694. An exhaustive abstract of his will is here printed because two of his daughters had married descendants of Mayflower Passengers.
The oldest daughter, Elizabeth (2) Vaughn (George 1), married Isaac 2 Howland (John 1 ); and another daughter, Mary 2 Vaughan, married Jonathan Washburn 4 (Elizabeth Mitchell 3, Jane 2 Cooke, Francis 1). The original will and the original inventory, which are still preserved in the Plymouth County Probate Files, have been used in making the following abstracts.

"My will is yt what I give unto my youngest son George Vaughan shall be in my eldest son's Joseph VaughansCustody untill he be setled."
The witnesses were Samuel Wood and Ebenezer Tinkham, each of whom signed by a mark. The will be probated on 10 November, 1694, both witnesses being present qand making oath "yt ye three lines under written were added by ye sd Testator at ye time of Sealing. The will was also recorded, 1:210)
George Vaughan was born in England or Wales about 1625-27. He deposed in
1650 aged 23 and was aged 25 in 1652. In 1650 he was of Essex Co., Mass. and
testified concerning the last will and testament of Honor Rolfe. She laft a
nuncupative will towhich he and Henry Lakin of Charlestown swore (Essex Co.
Probate printed records 1. 137). It seems quite possible that he was a
younger brother of William Vaughan of Portsmouth, N.H., who married Margaret
Cutts. There was an earlier George Vaughan who Came to the colonies in 1631
but returned to England. It has been considered that both William and Geaoge
were his sons -- and that possibly John of Rhode Island was of the same
family" (Mrs. Mary L. Holman in American Genealogist. Vol. 23-24 P. 24-31).
He appears in Marsfield, Mass. in 1652 when he married Elizabeth
Hinksman daughter of Edmond. (Mayflower Descendants Mag. Vol. 2, P.4--
Marshfield Vital Statistics-- P. 1 New England Gen. Register Vol. 16, P.
347). There his first five children were born and baptized in the Second
Church of Scituate -- now the First Unitarian of Norwell, Mass. On June 5,
1658 he was sued by John Sutton for detaining a bill. He was fined in
Marshfield on Oct. 21, 1666 for not attending public service. (colony
records) On March 1663/4, he sued William Shurtleff for debt and won. July
5, 1699 he is allowed to keep an Inn or "Ordinary" for the entertainment of
strangers at Middlebury. (Court order, Plymouth Col. Rec. 5.24.). Two
more Children, George and Mercy were born to them in Middleboro -- both
mentioned in his will, but since many Middleboro
Records were destroyed in King Philips War in 1675*, they were not recorded.
Much of the data we have was compiled from Bible records, documents
preserved by citizens and from Plymouth Church Records of which Middleboro
was at first part. He was a Freeman among the list of residents in 1663 in
Middleboro, owned much land, was a town constable 1 June 1675, was in the
garrison at the outbreak of King Philip's War. He and Many of his
descendants lived in that part of Middleboro known as the Wauppaunucket.
There still is a Vaughan Street in that section. 1n 1677 he purchased
William Hoskin's share in 26 mens purchase -- passed to Joseph in 1690.
(Mayflower Descendants Mag.Vol. 2, P. 159, Vol 10, P. 1-9,101.).
See Weston's History of Middleboro.
He died 20 October 1694 in his 73rd yr. and is burrued in Nemasket Hill
Cemetery beside his wife Elizabeth who died 26 June 1693 in her 60th year.
Hers is the oldest stone in the cemetery. The inscription is still legible.
His will dated June 30, 1694 was proved 10 Nov. 1694. The Inventory was
taken by Samuel Wood and John Bennett. His property ammounted to L-43, 8-s,
4-p-some over $2,000 in those days.
Will of George Vaughan:
Following the usual preamble, it states--

he now lives on with 1/2 my undivided meddow to him and his heirs
etc.
2. To my son, George Vaughan, I do give a 20 acre lot lying at ye
head of ye lot of John Cob. with 3 acres and a half of the meddow
lying in the meddow, commonly calles the lower meddow, and an
interest in all mu undivided upland, also my best bed with 2
sheets, a coverlid, a rugge and one blanket, two pillows with
pillow-beers, a bolster and curtains--to him and his heirs etc.
3. To my daughter, Mary Washburn, I do give ten acres of land lying
where my house now stands that I now live in with a bed and a

except that my son George Vaughan shal have a doubl share of all
my iron and pewter vessels of my household stuff -- I appiont my
eldest son, Joseph's custody till he be settled.
He was a man of considerable education-- for he kept a diary or record book dated Oct. 16, 1687 -- a photostat of the frontispiece the author (A.V.W.)
possesses. The book is partly written in Latin -- containes many
mathematical calculations and is one in exquisite penmanship. This book was
passed from eldest son -- or grandson -- and containes this inscription.
"Daniel Vaughan, his book, givento him by his honored grandfather Daniel
Vaughan, 1788. James Vaughan his book given him by his father, Daniel, 1844.
Volney Vaughan, his book given him by his father Aug. 1882."
Also in the book --
"Daniel Vaughan, March ye 22, 1757. This year I am 44 years of
age and I was born Oct. ye 29, 1712.O.S."
*King Philip's War
In New England, the first of two Indian wars was fought against the
Pequot, a powerful Mohegan clan treated by the English as a threat.
Urged on by Boston Preachers and using a trumped-up murder charge as a
pretext, the Puritans declared all-out war on the Pequot in 1637.
It was not a war fought by the chivalrous standards of European
engagement. The Puritans sacked and burned Indian villages by night.
Aided by loyal Naragansett and Mohegan forces, the colonial equivalent
of a search-and-destroy team entered a stockaded Pequot town near the
Mystic River, slaughtered its 600 inhabitants, and burned the village.
In the only other confrontation of the war, a group of Pequots was
trapped. The men were killed, the boys sold to slavers, and the women
and girls kept by the Puritans as slaves. As a tribe, the Pequot was
practically exterminated.
The English maintained peace for nearly forty years thanks to
their old allies, Massasoit's Wampanog-saviors of the Pilgrims-and the
Naragansett led by Canonicus (who had sheltered Roger Williams after
he was bannished from Boston). When these two chiefs died, the English
were ready to complete the subjugation of the New England Indians. But
Massasoit's son Metacom, called King Phillip by the English for his
adoption of European dress and customs, struck back.
The fighting took place in the summer of 1676, and for the
colonists it wasn's as easy as the Pequot battles had been. The combat
was the fiercest in New England history, and far bloodier than much of
the fighting during the Revolution. Metacom's Indians were equipped
with guns and armor acquired through trade, and he was an aggressive
leader. The outcome of this war was not assured, particularly in the
early going. But the colonists had too much on their side: superior
numbers-including 500 Mohegan gunmen, blood rivals of the Wampanoag-
and devastating battle tactics, including a return to the wholesale
massacre of noncombatants.
King Phillip was ultimately killed, his head displayed on a pole.
His wife and son, the grandson of the chief who had saved the Pilgrim,
was sold into slavery in the West Indies. an act of mercy according to
the leading Puritan clerics.

REF: "George Vaughan of Middleboro, Mass. and some of his descendants"from data collected by Agnes Vaughan Woods 1930 - 1961
In the appendix of his book Mr. Griffin mentions other early Vaughan
settlers in the colonies, including George and William.
Concerning George:
"George Vaughan, born probably in England or Wales c1625, died in
Middleborough, Mass Oct 20, 1794 age 73. His will proved Nov 10, 1694
(Plymouth Co. Probate 21524). He married Elizabeth, dau of Edmund Henchman
(Hincksman) in Marshfield, Mass. She died June 24, 1693 in 60th year.
Some genealogists think he could have been a brother of John Vaughan of
Newport, RI, or a younger brother of William Vaughan of Portsmouth, NH.
Children of George born in Plymouth Colony were: Elizabeth b.1653, m. Isaac
Howland; Joseph (Captain), b. 1654, m. (1) 1680 Joanna Thomas, m. (2) 1720
Mary (Hallet) Fuller, he died 1733. [...data omitted regarding descendants
of Capt Joseph Vaughan...] (Above condensed from article by Mary L. Holman
in American Genealogist July 1946)"
