The marriage of John Briggs to Agnes Thayer and his family line are presen
ted because it has information that is widely accepted as being factual. H
owever thereis nodocumentation that has been found to establish Agn
es as the wife of John of Taunton, nor is there any proof that the John Br
idges found in the Gloucestershire records is the same John Briggs that ap
peared in Taunton, MA 1657.The information is based on research publish
ed in "The American Genealogists", vol 59, 1983 by Douglas Richardson, M.
A. In this article, Mr. Richardson gives the following children for John a
nd Agnes:
1. John bp 27 Sept 1634, Thornbury; suggests without any proof that th
is is the younger John of Taunton;
2. Katherine bp Jan 1636/7; nfr
3. Richard bp 17 Mar 1638/9; d Taunton bef. 13, Dec 1692; [againspeculativ
e-no proof that Richard of Thornbury is the sameman as Richard of Taunton

It is proven through land records and deeds that John of Taunton was the f
ather of Richard, William and Hugh; based on the fact this was the only Br

James Bundy was born on 29 Dec 1664 in Taunton, MA. He died on 25 Sep 17
21 in East Greenwich, RI.(209) On 6 Jan. 1690 James Bundy of Braintree so
ld land in Taunton. On 31 May 1703 James Bundy of "Narrigansett country ne
ar Point Judah," eldest surviving son of John Bundy formerly of Taunton, t
ransferred land in Taunton. James Bundy of "Kings Town" cooper sold all ri
ghts to house andland which had been his for 16 years, near Point Judi
th RI in 1719/20. In 1720 James of Kingstown gave to his son Samuel Bun
dy of Kingstown, laborer, part of his East Greenwich farm. On 15 Sept. 17
21 James of East Greenwich sold to Samuel Bundy of East Greenwich, coope
r, and Ebenezer Bundy of Preston CT, yeoman, all his land, houses, et
c. in East Greenwich; Ebenezer Bundy transferred his share to his "broth
er Samuel" on 20 Nov. 1721. On 25 Nov. 1721 Mary Bundy, widow of James Bun
dy of East Greenwich deceased, and three sons of James-~James, Samuel a
nd Ebenezerappeared regarding an administrator. On 10 March 1721/2 Samu
el Bundy "son of deceased" was appointed administrator of the estate of Ja
mes Bundy of East Greenwich, cooper; the inventory was dated 8 Nov. 172
1. In depositions on 30 Jan. 1730/1 Samuel Bundy aged 37 of East Greenwi
ch and Joseph Bundy aged 30 of North Kingstown mentioned their father Jam
es Bundy. Ebenezer Bundy deposed 31 March 1719 aged "19 years and upwar
d" mentioning his father James Bundy No evidence was found to prove that t
he following were also children of James as has been claimed: John, who ma
rried Norwich CT Lydia Smallbent; Lydia; Benjamin, of Voluntown and possib
ly later of Stratford CT; and Nathaniel, who married in Westerly RI.

General Notes: Child - James Bundy
James Bundy was born about 1688/1690 and died between 1752 and 1762, proba
bly at Preston Connecticut, in the part which became Griswold in 181
5. It is thought that he might have married Mary Johnson the sister of h
is brother Josephs first wife Abegail. The marriage is believe to have tak
en place about 1710in Westerly Rhode Island. Mary died 4 May 1766, at Pre
ston Connecticut. James moved from Rhode Island sometime before 1721. Th
at year he purchased real estate in Connecticut. He and his wife became me
mbers of the second church in a district called Pachaug, on 30 June 172
8. All their children except the first, Isaac, were baptized at Griswold F
irst congregational Church 25 July 1728. Births of all the children are re
corded in Preston records although some ofthem may have been born in Rho
de Island. It is also believed that his wife and some of the children m
ay be buried in Pachaug Cemetery, but if so their graves have no marker
s. James Bundy of Preston 5 Sept. 1748 gave land in Preston to his son Jam
es Bundy Jr. On 13 Jan. 1748/9 James of Preston gave land in Preston to h
is son Peter Bundy.

Norris M. Compton Dies
Was at the Home of a Daughter in Illinois
Norris M. Compton passed away at the home of one of his daughters, Mrs. J. H. Fitzgerald, at Naperville Ill., Saturday, aged 84 years. He had been spending much time with another daughter at Buffalo, Mrs. J. F. Leffler, and went to Naperville a few weeks ago.
Always a resident of this county, he was among the well known men of the section. His ancestors, the Norris and Compton families, were among the pioneers of the southern tier, and composed that hardy stock which settled and developed the locality. Mr. Compton was born at Sullivanville and was a son of the late Peter and Amy Compton, the father being a minister. He died many years ago but the mother lived to be nearly 108 years of age and passed away about 10 years ago. She lived with her son in this village for many years. Deceased served in the civil war as a musician in the 29th Pennsylvania Regiment and was a member of Baldwin post. A few years ago he was extensively engaged in farming and was among the first men in the county to introduce full blood Holstein cattle. He was one of the organizers and the first president of the Chemung Valley Holstein Breeders’ Association. He was engaged for several years as a clerk in the U. S. Marshall’s office in Elmira. Following the death of his wife a few years ago, Mr. Compton had apartments at the Platt house.
Deceased was the father of the late William R. Compton, prominent as a Republican political leader in this county and for several years U.S. Marshall for this district’. lie is survived by three daughters - Mrs J. Fitzgerald of Naperville, Ill., at whose home he passed away; Mrs. Lewis H. Lent of Richfield Park, N.J.; Mrs. Leffler, wife of Rev. John F. Leffler, pastor of the Normal Park Methodist church at Buffalo, NY.
The funeral was held at the Methodist church in this village Wednesday at 10:30, Rev. Wm. Jacques, officiating. Burial in Maple Grove cemetery.

“The bewitchment and exorcism of the household of Ebenezer and Sybell Goddard apparently occurred in 1759, and the story was distantly remembered among the Mormons in the 1840s. The story also centered on a perfectionist cult, many of whose features anticipated nineteenth-century Mormonism.
The context for this episode encompassed a history of strife between Separates and Immortalists in Framingham and Hopkinton, Massachusetts, well south of Essex County in the Blackstone Valley.
In 1724 Elder Joseph Haven was dismissed from the Framingham church to form a church in the new town of Hopkinton (see William Montgomery notes), and in 1732, Edward Goddard led a group of his neighbors on the Framingham-Hopkinton line to join this Hopkinton church, which accepted them without the usual letters of dismissal. (see below)
The families were connected for the next century: in 1760 Joseph Haven would marry as his second wife Edward Goddard’s widowed daughter and in the 1830s the Havens would join the Youngs in the Mormon church. Goddard and many of his neighbors later returned to the Framingham church, but in 1746, toward the end of the Great Awakening, Edward Goddard led another secession in Framingham, this time to form a Separate church on strict Calvinist principles. This church survived about thirteen years, collapsing at the end of i five years after Edward Goddard’s death, with many of its members recombining to form a Baptist church.
Just over the town line in Hopkinton, the Awakening spawned another sectarian group: the Immortalists gathered around their "God", Nat Smith, still remembered almost a century later in the Young family. The exposure of a proto-Mormon family to a band of eighteenth-century perfectionists is alone interesting enough, but beyond this simple proximity lay a history of conflict leading to a story of demonic possession. Some of this conflict involved Joseph Haven’s church in Hopkinton: Ezra Stiles described an episode in which the Immortalists had walked “around Hopkinton Meetinghouse sounding with Ramshorns & and denouncing ‘tS downfall, in vain.”34 Rut there may also have been bad feelings between the Immortalists and Edward Goddard’s Framingham Separates. Nat Smith was apparently Nathaniel Smith, born in 1718 in Ipswich, the brother of a Dorothy Smith Singletary, whose husband, Ebenezer, was a member of Goddard’s church.
Bad feelings over “sheepstealing” may have been compounded by proximity: Edward Goddard’s land, inherited in 1754 by his son Ebenezer, lay across the town line from that of the Smiths. Potential conflict became overt when, according to Fanny Young Murray’s account, “old Nat Smith, their God,” challenged Ebenezer Goddard’s right to administer the estate of a widow whose property lay “somewhere on the outskirts of his domains.” Goddard ignored Smith’s threats; strange things soon began to occur in his household.
First, all of Goddard’s papers that were “of any consequence to him” disappeared from a locked desk to be found at the bottom of the well, though none of them got wet. Strict Calvinists and “not much inclined to the marvelous,” the Goddards “concluded to say nothing about it, and let it all go as it was impossible to account for in any rational way.” Next, Sybell Goddard found the milk spoiled by a silver spoon “filled with the most horrible filth.” Suspicion turned on a young slave boy, and when the milk was again spoiled, he was whipped severely. Kept under close surveillance, the boy nonetheless continued to disrupt the household economy, until one morning one of the girl’s caps fell from his apron and - “cut smoothly in two” by some unknown means - half of it flew up the chimney and disappeared. With this, Sybell Goddard began to suspect supernatural powers at work and the boy, now Forgiven, revealed
that a little bird came every day and whispered in his ear, that if he
did not do what it told him to, he should be killed that night. ft
also told him if he told anybody what made him do it, he should be killed; but said he tried to tell his master, when he whipped him so, but could not.
With occult power now apparent to all, their troubles continued. Soon after, the family books were found covering the oven fire; Fanny Young Murray claimed to remember having read books scorched in this fire, “where the edge of the leaves were burned a little, and some spots burned in onto the reading.” Still later, the bed clothing of infant twins came down the oven chimney to be spoiled in the fire; Sybell ran and “found her babies naked, as she expected.” The family began to fear that supernatural forces “were likely to destroy everything they had. . . ; there seemed to be a kind of despairing consternation upon them.”
By this time the tribulations of the Goddard household were common knowledge. “Many went to see the wonders that were daily exhibited - It was noised through the whole country, it was the topic of conversation in every house both public and private; but nobody could do them any good.” Finally the decision was made “to try what virtue would be found good.” Finally the decision was made “to try what virtue would be found in fasting and prayer.” Sixteen ministers were called together at the house, “the most devout and holy men they could find.” After three days and two nights of fasting and prayer, one of the preachers took the lead in prayer and exorcised the house.
He could not be denied, he plead with the Lord as a man would plead for life; that he would break the power of the destroyer, that he would rebuke him, and command him to leave that house and family forever. Towards night, on the third day, when he was pouring out his soul with such fervour, and they were all united with him, in a moment there seemed to be shock through the whole house, not of distress or sorrow, but of joy and assurance that there was a God in the heavens, who can be penetrated with the cries of his children, and who was not slow to answer the prayers of those that put their trust in him. From that hour, not a thing of the kind ever took place in their house or anywhere about them.”

“PRESBYTERIANISM. - Seven of the original members of the church were Scotch Presbyterians, and five others soon after joined. As nothing was said at the outset about a form of church government, these men could conscientiously assent to the covenant, and unite in Christian communion. April 9, 1731, the church voted “to comply with the Platform of Church Discipline agreed to by the Synod of Churches assembled at Cambridge, 1649, as the rule of their discipline, so far as they apprehended it to be agreeable to the word of God.” This voting the church Congregational gave great offence to the Presbyterians. About ten families withdrew from the communion of the church. They were brought under discipline, and eventually several of them excommunicated. In 1734, they organized a Presbyterian church, built a small meeting-house about one and one half miles west of the village, near what is known as the Ellery place. Subsequently, on the removal of many of these families to Blandford, this church organization was, by consent of Presbytery, transferred to that town, where it existed till 1800. Most of the families which remained in Hopkinton made concessions to the church, and were restored to their former standing.

Nov. 27, 1732. The church met to consider of the desires of Edward Goddard, Thomas Mellen, Benj. Whitney, Simon Mellen, Richard Haven, and Simon Goddard, all belonging to the church of Christ, in Framingham, to be admitted into full communion with this church. Voted, To send to the church in Framingham to know what objections they had against our receiving them. Jan. 10, 1732-3, the Church met, and voted to receive the above-named brethren, as members in full communion with us, without a dismission from Framingham church (they being before in full communion with that church). The reasons inducing this church hereto were: 1. Those brethren having used all possible pains with the pastor to obtain a dismission from that church. 2. This church having sent a letter to (the Framingham church, desiring their consent for our receiving the above-named members, or offer such objections to us as might justify our denial of their admission with us. 3. Upon the foregoing reasons, this church looked upon it as agreeable to the Platform of Church Discipline, Chap. 13, Section 2.”
